@@SiHargreaves I like when djs or artists upload contents that show or explain the process they went through in order to reach an advanced level in their craft. As a novice or intermediate, you often ask yourself how someone better than you surpassed the level you're stuck at. It's pretty unusual to see. You see a lot of videos in which artists showcase their skills, but not so much where they tell about the journey behind it. It's super nice and motivating but you don't learn that much. So I like the concept of the channel, the emphasis is more on the "how" rather than the "what", and you speak about your own experiences. Great stuff

I have always been vaguely aware of these traps in my 25 years of scratching, but not enough to always actively avoid them. One of the best videos on scratch practice. Will show this to my students. I’ve made an 11 minute rising tempo track that increases 5bpm every 16 bars to avoid point 4, scratching at the same tempo. Will send you it if you want. Thanks for the video.

Hey man, I do not. I started experimenting with some video related stuff but it didn't do too well. I guess I've already started to build a tablist audience on this channel. Which animations are you referring to?
@@SiHargreaves the diagonal scrolling text that alternates with solid and outline fonts. I also like the text animation at the start into the graphic of the 4 bar measure. The "woosh" sound effect was a great touch.
learning how (and when) to scratch takes precisely ten years. five years buying and listening to music, four and a half years learning how to mix that music together in a pleasing way and six months learning some basic cuts.
@@SiHargreaves im exaggerating for effect. haha. great work man keep it up. your saying stuff that a lot wont say. ive just been banned from scratch nerds for saying almost exactly the same thing. the state of turntablism is pretty shocking considering its been going 25 years or so. weve literally had 25 years of ah fresh samples and it never seems to develop..... im sick of it, if i click on a dj vid and an ah samples appears i just shut it down. a lot of guys still have the thud rumble hang over and those days are gone. all the tech we have now and scratch djs are just padding round in circles not even trying imo. guys like jon furst and asian hawk that are doing performance stuff is where its at i think.

Just started scratching and you really have answered a lot of questions I’ve had in my mind. I’ve been doing for 25 years, mainly house, starting scratching when the year started. Tired of aahhs and fresh already. Great point with switching samples up. I try changing tempos which has helps my chirps ALOT. Basically sticking to basics until I feel I’ve mastered those, tears, baby, stabs, chops, and transforms. Gonna start using songs to scratch vocals.... I do have a question, when I do chirps, I’ve noticed that sometimes I only get 1 sound. Like I’m losing a portion of the sound. Am I moving my record hand too fast or am I cutting the sound off too fast? When I slow down I hear it fine but I mainly notice it if I try to transition to another scratch fast....hope that makes sense....cheers. Great channel
It should deffo be 2 distinct sounds really. It's probably just a timing thing. Just do then super slowly so you get the proper sounds and slowly speed it up. Don't even need a beat in while you do this. Once you have it clean try again with the beat Oh and thanks 😊
Very usefull video for the scratch scene , the exemples and video editing are on point ! 👌 I'd like to access to the Map as well and by any chance do you know the name of the beat at 6'23" ?

@@SiHargreaves I think you are covering pretty much everything already, your content is helping me loads. This 7 mistakes video has helped me in the last couple days, I can perform different scratches ok but was not giving any thought to rhythm. Always starting on the 1 etc. I like to scratch to fast music, 150 bpm upwards, also I scratch at lower bpms 90/100 etc. For the faster bpms I’ve found it helpful to pitch them right down so I can clearly hear the rhythms , use some basic fundamental scratches that work well with the track I’m scratching over. When I’m happy with the patterns I’ve created I’ll pitch track back up to original speed. By doing this I’m creating patterns I’d never of even thought of if I started off scratching at the original bpm. I also am practicing more deliberately now, giving careful thought to the scratches I’m doing. Leaving pauses as well, which I didn’t do as much before. My scratches would just end up sounding annoying, sort of like someone who wouldn’t stop talking 😂😂😂 introducing silence in between scratches is a game changer for me. Keep the great content coming 👍
@@SiHargreaves I love scratching to hip hop, if I’m honest it’s scratching to hip hop that improved my scratching overall. But I started off scratching to Hardstyle and Hardcore music in the beginning, but my scratches were sounding robotic. Obviously the bpms were so fast that I found it difficult to come up with any decent scratch patterns. I would do a lot of 2click flares (using the twiddle technique) and chirps. It wasn’t until I started recording and listening back to my scratching that I thought “this sounds annoying and like a jumbled up mess” . So I decided to pitch the track I’m scratching over right down so the rhythms are clear. It’s then when I realised that I was over doing things, I realised that doing some babies, stabs and transformers was all I needed. So when I pitch the track back to its original speed 150/175bpm my scratches have better flow and actually make sense with the rhythms of the track. Sometimes it is only the basic scratches needed to compliment a track.

On an unrelated-yet-related note, do you do video animation tutorials? Your text animations in this video are great.
Hey - great videos and very informative 🙏 do you still have a link to the chart by chance? Best regards and many thanks Ollie
Check the comments mate, it's not all that though, need to flesh it out really
learning how (and when) to scratch takes precisely ten years. five years buying and listening to music, four and a half years learning how to mix that music together in a pleasing way and six months learning some basic cuts.
Dunno about that mate, took me 2 years to do any cuts that sounded half decent and around 6 or 7 till I'd actually consider them good.
Very importan Video ver helpfull 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great tips, always enjoy watching your videos
Thanks! All this encouragement getting me inspired again :)
Hey Si, this is some great content you are producing, I can relate to heaps of the stuff you are talking about here and in some of your other videos as well, such as the 8 scratch tips and your videos on scratch practicing routines. The mind map ideas is extremely nice, could you hook me up with that? Keep the great footage coming :). Cheers!
Thank you so much for all the amazing tips! Since I´ve practise with no tutor, this will help me to get on the right track! Cheers from Brazil
Happy to help! I've been writing another video today on scratching resources that I think you'll find useful!
Useful tips here.
That map looks fresh. Access will be appreciated.
For sure!
Here is a link to the mind map, there's 2 versions. If you want to stay up-to-date with newer versions, bosh your email in the Gumroad link and I'll email newer ones as I start to improve on it. I plan to stick it in Illustrator once I've got the basic layout down to see if I can make it a bit more AESTHETIC ha. Any feedback at this point is appreciated!

Very helpful men!! I'm glad i only practice basics scratches and those our my favorites.! I never did flares and orbits but i can do boomerangs and chirp flare lol 😅. Anyway thankyou so much. I've been findings some do's and dont's on scratching for a long time. 👌👌
You can chirp flare but not flare? That's weird man! haha.
@@SiHargreaves no i mean just one click flare but not 2 clicks or 3.. I just did it when im praticing chirp lol.
ahh yeah, that's pretty common I think!
But sir thankyou for uploading some tips men. I've been finding this kind of tutorial. I feel like im not funky when i practicing. But right now im improving a bit. Salute.!!

Once you have it clean try again with the beat
Oh and thanks 😊
Very usefull video for the scratch scene , the exemples and video editing are on point ! 👌
I'd like to access to the Map as well and by any chance do you know the name of the beat at 6'23" ?
Hey man. Actually I don't. I can remember the looper I was using that day though... It's somewhere on here! It's a really dope looper www.mylooper.com/fr/ega-ena-89elements-l-147.html
@@SiHargreaves Woo thank you very much ! this looper is indeed really dope and i think it's my favorite so far , hours of fun to come ! i'd really like to have access to the Map you are talking about in the vid to organize my practice a bit more . Thanks in advance !

All great advice, but don’t be afraid to practice mechanical stuff repetitively. However, take the time to free style and flow with the beat
Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I practiced new scratches mechanically at the beginning no end. I also freestyle a lot!

Hi Si, I would like to get the Mindmap of scratches.
Check description my guy
Man I love this channel
Ah cheers man. Anything you'd like to see more of?
That's dope dude! I think most people go through a similar evolution that you've just described. I know I did (and still do I guess!)
Congratulations from Brazil.
Dope!
