As a person who moved to Korea over 10 years ago, i have noticed that its quite common for people to comment on your appearance in a way that wouldnt be accepted in western culture. Strangers on the subway, at restaurants, etc...have said these things in my presence. I definitely dont think its right to do so, but i think the culture over here is less filtered when it comes to commenting about people's appearance.
Well not only in Korea but in my country in southeast Asia is also quite common for people to comment on someone else physical appearance without filtering it first
@yesn't them hiding behind all of those being "culture" is so annoying. They want to be well known by the world but they dont want to be open and accepting towards other people.
@@떡볶이-p1k I agree with you. I notice a lot of foreigners feel entitled to step in and "educate" others when they know nothing of the climate there. It's interesting that Koreans pride themselves with being "brutally honest", and tell Westerners we're "too sensitive", but when they're on the receiving end of their brutal honestly, it hits differently. All of sudden it's "rude". Okay. I'm not shocked. The culture is obsessed with looks - physical perfection, especially for women...like ridiculous. So I don't know why people are sooo surprised. Just because an actor plays a nice guy doesn't mean he is in real life. Folks are most concerned about who's dating who, so figure out what you value.
I dont think koreans is what I would say 'brutally honest' they are more like extremely superficial, brutally honest would not be limited to physical attributes.

I think this industry, like many others to some extent, is very dangerous. This is why there needs to be a line drawn between a viewer “worshipping” their fave whether in a drama or from an idol. You just don’t know them, which is so scary to actually think about, because they could be going against everything you value but you blinded by the façade. I'm literally speechless about all the harrassing comments. I know Korean beauty standards are very high esp when it comes to skin, teeth and body fat. I'm a "normal" woman. I feel good in my body and I love myself. I'm old enough to do so. But for younger girls it's really dangerous. Even they are already skinny, they wanna lose even more weight just to perfect for other people. Not for themself. And that's the most dangerous thing ever. Girls, be proud of yourselves. It doesn't matter if you are fat, thin, tall, short, fair-skinned, dark-skinned. When you look in the mirror, love yourself and be happy. No man in the world is worth that.

Those people need some self-reflection and probably weren't hugged enough as kids. In all seriousness, these people really showcase how society views gender and different bodies.
They weren't hugged enough? Naaa.. they are just being men in a patriarchal society. Lack of parent's love doesn't make assh*le men. A patriarchal machist education makes that.
@@mariaeugeniass that's true. My point in writing it was that lighthearted first sentence comes from the fact that when people don't see kindness or affection when they are young will make people more cold, insensitive and represe their emotions.
I think these comments are a reflection of korean society in general. As far as i can see, all three men were asked about their opinions of women at one stage, this kind of question shouldn't be asked. Watching my own children get bullied by their Korean classmates just because they had difficulty learning the language was heart breaking. I was always iffy about Park Hae Jin, especially because of some of the roles he chose, but the others, I was kinda shocked. Like obviously I don’t know these actors in real life, but I watched a lot of their background scenes. Their interactions between the cast and crew made them look like relatively cool and nice guys, but to understand this side of them is quite devastating. I guess you can’t trust anything on camera. It makes me kinda feel bad for watching and enjoying the dramas they lead in, especially when they even criticised their own co-stars. I hate that blinded fans stand in front of them like shields saying that ‘no it’s just a misunderstanding, they made a mistake, this won’t happen again, he’s not like this in real life’ Yes, people make mistakes. Yes, people are sometimes bad at first but become nicer later on, but these guys clearly don’t acknowledge it’s wrong to say those things. Given the fact that they’re in their late 30s, while it’s still young, they should know this by now. But you know, there’s still hope. Not because I liked their acting, not because they’re public figures, but because I don’t want others to see this as an opportunity to make these remarks. Of course, everyone has the right to their own understanding and conclusions after each drama or movie. Personally I am amazed by his acting. I don’t know him as a person, if indeed he made such remarks, in which context they were made, thus I can not express myself in this matter. As a westerner I’m used to these norm here, where I live, where body shaming is not accepted nor acceptable from normal people, yet from public figures. How can you trust someone you don't know personally? You think because he looks nice, and play nice characters you know him? That's foolish of you to think this way. They're actors playing parts.
when you started to like celebrities, you must learn one things which is the celebrities are the same person we found in our daily lives, sometimes there are people who is kind, and sometimes there are people who is bad jerk but is hiding behind a mask like others. So, there is no surprise anymore (at least for me) no matter how kind how kind and good the character portrayed by the actor or actress, it still is not their true selves, it’s their roles/character portrayed by them but NOT THE REAL THEM. So yeah, To think that a lot of people like this kind of guy(inc. me too) without knowing their real personality make me want to throw up. Remember guys, celebrities is just other person you met in daily lives. If you have met a jerk, then the celebrities also have a jerk. If you met an angle, then celebrities also have an angle. What makes the difference is, the celebrities is hiding behind the mask while the person you met in daily lives is not hiding whatsoever and just reveals their true selves. So yeah remember that! I also always have to remind myself that celebrities man actor (especially) is just man that you met irl. So, lower the expectations because we as fan/ as viewer not know THE TRUEST of their selves. We just know them only what they want to show us :) Same goes to idol too(but i don’t want to talk much about idol, in case i will create fanwar here huhu) We don’t know our celebrities, but they know their selves. So to those who said my oppa would never do that would never do this, i hope you will not regret it later or down yourself. Because we know NOTHING absolutely nothing about our celebrities except their roles/their character in drama. I have met many jerks in my life, so it is not possible that some i do said some of the celebrities also a jerk in real life, maybe USED TO BE A JERK, or STILL A JERK, we don’t know. - i don’t know why i am typing this so long, but yeah the industry has many things that we don’t know up till this day…
Most of the time famous people, especially idols, are not that interesting as personalities and even are bad characters!! They are just humans with flaws..

I'm stunned hearing this about Park Hae-Jin. I've watched two of his dramas, I really liked his role in Doctor Stranger. Seriously, what's wrong with these stars. @@lizardface88 yup, we actually can ban him and cancel him without throwing hate to him. people said the sin u mock today, might be the sin u commit tomorrow
The whole world does this, but south Korea's "beauty" standards are ridiculous. The fact that plastic surgery is so common shows how insecure everyone is. They are too use to seeing "perfection" (beauty is different to everyone). Differences are beautiful. When everyone strives to look the same, who is beautiful then? No one. This applies to the US a lot, too.
@@Timbone07 why exactly is plastic surgery a bad thing? It's only bad when it's lied about which creates an unrealistic expectations out standard, but in Korea it's not really taboo to speak about among those you know so that part is eliminated. Plastic surgery is an amazing tool that literally makes you look better in exchange for money. If there was a pool worth a few thousand bucks that made you smarter, would you say it's wrong for that to be normalized? Also don't say that beauty is subjective, beauty is a mix of subjective and objective factors and alot of things are considered objectively beautiful.

The fact that plastic surgery is so talked about and accepted in Korea is a good thing. It's better than keeping it as taboo. If people don't lie about it, then it doesn't create unrealistic expectations that it can be achieved without surgery.

Yoo Yeon-Sook said this in 2015. I mean he was already 30 but lets hope he has changed since then. Though I don't think he did because he is still single lmao
If he was 30 when he said that. I belive there is no chance for him to change. I mean for him its just 20ish years of life left, good luck to him if he still has the same mindset.
There's a slim chance he'll change. Regardless, even if he's young, it doesn't give him an excuse. I'm so over people giving the "I was young and stupid" excuse. If they're raised right, they should know how to behave well. Kindness and being polite is being taught in kindergarten.
@Aleksandra nothing against your comment but 😅😅🙈 Jesus I hope when you are 57ish years old you don't think this is the end of your life. I mean c'mon! Add 20+more and that probably will be closer to the truth

this is so disappointing. I love traveling and S.Korea was on the list of countries I wanted to study abroad in but not anymore. I've been doing my research for the last 3 years and the outcome is ridiculous and a shit show. Thank you for your honesty because I know where I won't be going or visiting in college... Some people need to wake the fuck up and smell the BITTER PISS because their views on other people are disrespectful and disgusting.
Yes, I understand. But, you cannot judge a country on the basis of their entertainment drama/movie stars. S. Korea in general is a great place to visit.

I wasn't expecting Park Haejin, especially for someone who suffered from depression and social phobia, how does he feel making such disgusting comments right in front of people's faces
There are people with two faces. Some check this immediately and others are bitterly disappointed after a certain time. Disappointments are part of life. Depression can hit anyone, unfortunately. Two years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic, I also suffered from it. I am even more afraid of crowds than I was before the pandemic. One doesn't know whether the person opposite has Corona or not. With us since April-03- 2020 the mouth masks obligation were relaxed. It is damn risky even the purchase. I still use the FFP2 mask. Some people want pity and come with some diseases. That gives attention. Unfortunately, people really suffer from claustrophobia or even depression and try to live with it and not do anything stupid. Three years ago a nice man shot himself because his doctor said "he had terminal cancer and should go home to die." The man didn't want to suffer or die of cancer until the last second, so he locked himself in his trailer and shot himself.
I have a friend who was extremely skinny when we were in our 20s. To a point that her wedding dress was basically just hanging on her. And his husband is also skinny. Have always been. But since she had a surgery because her epilepsy and had to change medication. She started to gain weight and became more healthier looking in my eyes. Now we are almost 40, and whenever my friend says that his husband is telling her to lose weight (even though she is at healthy weight right now). I always say, that tell him that you will lose weight when he gains some weight so he doesnt look like a skeleton. (Husband is healthy but has hard time gaining weight) And I do have to say that their relationship is not healthiest.
Tbh I don’t really care how Korean actors are in real life. I just like some actors bc of a drama I’ve watched them in and try to watch dramas with them in it. I don’t usually stan them or anything. But I wanted to see what the video had to show. I wonder what their managers and PR team are even doing letting their client just say whatever they want though. Don’t they have to go through press training? Men just say and do whatever they want and can usually get away with it. There’s many egotistical and misogynistic people in the world. Celebrities aren’t immune to having immature and ignorant ideologies. Sometimes you educate yourself as you get older and sometimes you remain insolent. I don’t think it helps when you live in a culturally misogynistic society or country. I mean fans were literally burning photocards of Irene from Red Velvet bc she read a feminist book a few yrs ago. That is the reality of South Korea. It will take time for Korea to move away from these deeply ingrained cultural norms but it is happening. Slowly it is happening. We have to remember that Korea became a developed country not that long ago and in a short amount of time (compared to other countries). It will take time. We just have to call out their bs when situations come up. Korea has the scrutiny of the world on them now.

If he is transphobic, he didn't go there. The comments with mc Bong Sun is like what they usually do, she is his best friend, and he even invited her to his fan meeting, they likes to jokes around. Gah, I can't believe I really liked all of them, especially Kim Young Kwang and Yoo Yeon Seok . They are all such talented actors, but unfortunately I can't look up to them anymore. What a shame!

The part of Park Hae Jin is not true. It is a defamation article wrote in 2016 and then directly translated by a UK site. They edited his old shows in Happy Together and Family Outing.

I think this industry, like many others to some extent, is very dangerous. This is why there needs to be a line drawn between a viewer “worshipping” their fave whether in a drama or from an idol. I think I’ve learnt that I would rather be in “love” with their on screen character (drama wise) or just listen to their music (K-pop wise) to avoid having associated with their “true selves”.

Not because I liked their acting, not because they’re public figures, but because I don’t want others to see this as an opportunity to make these remarks. thank you for pointing these things out! it's something with really alarming effects on korean culture itself and, considering how hallyu has brought kdrama and kpop to global stature, it's something that could harm so many people. in fairness, i have watched some dramas and films whose writers seem to include the attempt to correct such wrong concepts of beauty and what's good, but those are few and far between and the overwhelming wave has gotten to the point of being morally questionable.

when you started to like celebrities, you must learn one things which is the celebrities are the same person we found in our daily lives, sometimes there are people who is kind, and sometimes there are people who is bad jerk but is hiding behind a mask like others. No one.

The fact that plastic surgery is so talked about and accepted in Korea is a good thing. It's better than keeping it as taboo. If people don't lie about it, then it doesn't create unrealistic expectations that it can be achieved without surgery.

For Park Hae Jin. it cut where it shouldn't be. In the original Happy Together, the MC, Yoo Jae Suk asked him to act as plastic surgeon, that's where the comments come from. The haters only cut where he gave the comments. In the family outing 2009, they were playing Guess the Flaw, a dating game. He was asked, also by Yoo Jae Suk, to read the flaws, he mispronounce the word "gold digger'. But he directly apologized. In the Champagned interview, KBS 2009. He said before they cut it, he went to the transgender bar to had a diner with friends when the bartender said that he too pretty, and asked him to work there. If he is transphobic, he didn't go there. The comments with mc Bong Sun is like what they usually do, she is his best friend, and he even invited her to his fan meeting, they likes to jokes around. She also said a lot of things about his physical appearance. All that cut out is from KBS and SBS, a public channel. If it is offensive, they wont aired it. It's a defamation for Park Hae Jin. It is from old article in 2016 that edited out of context his old shows from Family Outing 2009, Champagne interview 2009 KBS and Happy Together KBS. In the Champagne interview he only said the bartender looked tired and he was offered to work there, nothing transphobic.
No wonder I can’t seem to finish their KDRAMAs where they starred in.
Many men share the same thoughts as these men. The difference is they are smart enough not to say it because it’s improper.
All those men are shallow. They will never see the right value in women.
Yes

K celebs also has to faced dedamation and malicious rumors. Some can be fatal. Here the article for PHJ was from a slander in 2016
