So well said! One day I accidentally created a background using an industrial photo of pipes, ducts, and huge valves on the floor. I just put the image on GIMP and went from there. Again a very, very useful video Walter. Backrounds can give the comic a lot. I mean, you can tell alot about the situations there are in, foreshadowing story and supporting the characters.Another thing is worldbuilding when you etablish space or fantasy stuff;) It can helpful to think of: -What car will your Character drive (old and dirty , luxus limo, SUV etc) -What will his house/ room look like according his character. (even in the special "world" you are in) -If you do etablishing shots, make shure you might use that place again, having enough reference for the case you might use it again -especially when your Comic is longer than a oneshot. -When it comes to houses it can be helpful to browse to houses what are on sale. Sometimes they support even 3d views of every room and you can stop it any time you want shooting references (push the print button on your keyboard and open photoshop/paint whatever> new import) or just use your own school/ cityhall/museum etc. as general reference> take photos! sometimes Google maps can give you at least a general mood and feel of a location. -Easier then common 3d progs are roomplaners (as app or online) If you have spare time: scetch, scetch scetch;) -Don`t copy and paste Star Wars or LOTR (or whatever) but you can use it as Idea.Movies can give you also a hint what you can do with coloring... (or you can pet your OCD and google every damn medival building as i did recently, to find my general style for my fantasy inviroment :P) Can I use your t-shirt as reference ? Thank you for this! Honestly, I struggle even making a map for an area where a fight takes place if I haven't solidified everything that needs to happen, but creating the map gives you more ideas for things to happen in an action comic.
I don’t even do comics, came here for tricks in backgrounds for regular illustration, and your tip of drawing out a 2d layout of the space blew my mind. When you’re at a point where you have a nice simple shape-based composition thumbnail and know where the characters go, when you need to figure out *what exactly* goes into the background, even 3D blockouts seem a bit daunting just because you aren’t sure what you’re going for yet, especially if you’re designing some weird fantasy architecture rather than a modern world scene. Making a flat layout seems kinda like a precursor/companion to the 3d method, a quick and not scary way to ideate. Thank you so much!! :)
Hey, thank you! Really happy it was helpful. It's sorta of my go to trick anything I'm having a problem. I draw it flat. Like If I can't figure out a pose, I draw it in simple profile, it's a little easier to understand without all the forshortening.
I am currently in the process of learning Blender to use 3D models. It will save me time since I don't have to ink or color everything and just need to add the details when I import the render into Clip Studio Paint. If I had to learn drawing everything by hand it will take me years to get to a decent quality since I don't have much spare time to work on my comic. I just kitbash some free 3d models until I got a model that I am satisfied with.
Sweet Home 3D takes floor plans and turns them into 3D models! If you have a particular idea for a building or room, you can draw the floor plan and the program does the rest. It even allows you to export the 3D model to use in CSP! (If you export the 3D model, you might have to scale it down in Blender so CSP doesn't crash-ESPECIALLY if you make a full building!)
Oh my gosh thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you as you said in the beginning of the video I have been very stressed out for a very long time trying to write a comic draw my comic whatever and I always get overwhelmed because of the backgrounds this video is very helpful thank you so much I appreciate you.
Will you plz make a coloring tutorial on background from scratch? For example that house shown earlier, how do I color it without bringing to much attention to it but still keep it detailed? Plz I really need a tutorial and I can't find one vid to help me. All of them are just importing pictures and using blending mode. But my story takes place on a more futuristic environment, so I can't find pictures that'll suit the environment. And I'm struggling to color. Plz make a tutorial?
Tbh I simply wander around NY and I take pictures to every hotspot places as a background reference for my webcomic series. Then I draft it by using different color pencils like blue, orange and red along with the 3D human models and objects to connect with the perspective. And I use google images often to look some image that I’m looking for. So yeah I’m not having a hard time about it
I use a huion digital tablet 19”. But i really struggle to draw a half decent straight line. Using rulers not only takes up time but also it looks stiff. Its for this reason i dread drawing backgrounds. I have tried doing practices to improve this, but its gotten so bad, i have actually gone back to old school pen and paper
A trick you can try is to make the first sketch with wonky lines and then go over it again with rulers, that way you have the looseness of the sketch and you get clean lines from the ruler !
What program are you using to draw? You may have to find a good level of zoom to draw the length of line you're drawing. Clip Studio has pretty good line stabilization that may help fix some wobbly without making it look like a ruler. If it's a hard scene, I will sketch with a ruler and then free hand over my rulered-line, so that it looks organic but is being informed by a "good" line.
My story takes place on a island. So i digitally paint all the backgrounds. Its pretty time consuming but i like how it looks. How.i can see the texture of the brush strokes i leave there etc.
I used 3D models as well but I started seeing that it's not fitting the style of my comic. I always have an issue with filters and trying to make it fit so I think it may be better for me to just draw from it scratch. The floorplan tip is helpful.
I'm in the same boat. I used clip studios perspective rulers for a while, but I didn't really enjoy it as much as free-handing stuff and having it look wonky. I think it's about know what options there are, understanding how their useful, but in the end you gotta go with what works best for you.
Once had to draw some cars in proper perspective for scene elements in a commission. Normally I'm halfway decent with machines, but had little experience with cars. I eventually resorted to using GTA5, walking up to random parked cars and using the camera controls to place them in the proper POV, then taking screenshots to use in tracing their general shapes to insert into the scene. Another tactic I used for an indoor scene with fairly ornate furniture was to sketch out an overhead map of the room, lay it on the "surface" in SketchUp Make 2017 (the last free standalone version). I'd then draw the outline of the room and furniture, then use SketchUp's tools to extrude the walls and furniture upward, creating the room in 3D, populateed with basic shapes that I could carve up into simple representations of the furniture for perspective, than drew over those to 'pencil' the backdrop.
Nice! Very smart techniques. I use the "map" and extrude for a lot of my basic models, even stuff like spaceships and carts. I just need the general shapes to get the scale and perspective right. I can add the details once the mass is there. One thing I've noticed is that after using the model a few times, it becomes easier to free-hand fake it in a lot of panels.
Is SketchUp acceptable? I also notice on some webtoons like unOrdinary that they just put a 3D background and add a blur effect when it comes to close-up shots.
walter im a new subsciber and an aspiring webtoon maker thanks i learn a lot from you on how i should get a head start of my story.. hope you see it once its done

Great vid! I wish I'd found it a little sooner though haha. Just spent several hours on an establishing shot of a city. Probably didn't need to draw each individual building, but hey- at least it was kind of therapeutic ;D

Ey guys i hope this help XD for those who are android and doesnt have for 3d models i sometimes use minecraft and download a map like a city and i used that for the world of my comics :DD u can have a lots of perspective and i use it to underlay and sketch it or change the building faces and stuffs just need to look where the vanoshing point is and its all good XD
I wanna ask. I’m not really good at drawing background. It comes an idea to use Google Earth to find good place and I screen capture it then I paint over it and use it as my Webtoon background, is that allowed? will I get copyrighted or banned or something?
lol I agree with you on being impatient lol. I recently paid some some for a 3d model of a car since majority of my story will have the vehicle in it lol
It makes total sense to do that. I have a hard time spending money just like everyone else, but you have to weigh that money against time, which is priceless. So if you're in a position, hiring modelers is a good thing. It's also cool to be able to help the creative machine grow by spreading the money around.
@@walterostlie I agree I seized the opportunity whenever I get the chance. I save money just in case I need it to go towards my comic lol. We eating cup noodles over here lol
For me, the problem isn't perspective it's composition. I'm horrible at knowing how much background to put in for what panels. Where I should put the eye level for the best shots for the scene. That kind of stuff. I guess the best bet is keep studying other comic artist's work for this.
Place a little spoon under the edge of the lid, push it up until you hear a plop and bam! Vacuum is gone. Now even a child can open it. You're welcome ;)
If you use something like Sketchup, and the 3D warehouse, is that legal? Or do you need to credit the original creators or how does that work? For reference I'm talking about setting up your object or scene's angle in Sketchup and then tracing a 2D render? Thoughts?
I think technically and maybe ethically it would be nice to credit the artists who did the original work. However, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone do it. If you look at those websites, the people usually say what kind of license they want. Some will say do whatever you want and don't credit, others will say you need to credit them. I would say go based on what they request.
Thank you so much for this video it was really helpful! I have a question though in regards to webtoon. Am I allowed to write song lyrics of popular songs or should I avoid doing that. Of course, I'm not going to write the whole lyrics but just a snippet for when a character is singing.
I was drawing in clipstudio. The 3d program I used to build that ugly ship was blender. The one where I traced the car was clip studio again using their prebuilt free models that come with the program.
Honestly, I just used Roblox studio for my 3d scene stuff, there is the things about how the models you use aren't your own, gotta be creative to stay away from controversy.
Yeah, it's a tricky line on what is fair use and using other people's creative endeavors to your own advantage without giving the original creator anything in return. But it's the crazy world we live in. Someone else mentioned roblox, never heard of it before, but I'm gonna check it out.
I think Walter forgot Webtoon is on a 10 star scale. Oops. As long as people remember that Ghost Bats deserves all the points they'll rate it right. 10⭐ for Ghost Bats
That alllllways trips me up. Cause it's like 5 stars, like visually on the screen. I keep trying to remind myself. 10 stars 10 stars 10 stars. hah, Thanks!

Walter Ostlie i use clip studio, i might need a glove or something. My skin doesn’t glide over the glassy surface easily as it does over paper
@@DraganDraws Try wrapping your hand in a towel or shirt to see if that helps, if it does, then yah, maybe a glove would help.
Thanks bro. This really helped me draw backgrounds! Rock On!
My story takes place on a island. So i digitally paint all the backgrounds. Its pretty time consuming but i like how it looks. How.i can see the texture of the brush strokes i leave there etc.
That's pretty cool. Are you already posting your comic online or are you still getting it ready? If you're already posting it, drop a link.
@@walterostlie im trying to build a buffer before posting. I will probably post in june. :)
@@walterostlie Yeah totally agree
"Screw em!"
Thank you. I agree
🙏 just in time for my assignment, yes thank you
Hope you get an A++
Unrelated, but I hope Walter knows how handsome he is 😳💕
Aww. Thank you very much! ❤
3D Modeler website doesnt work anymore. Do you how can I put 3d mdoels on Photoshop?
Another helpful video! Thankyou 😁
Is SketchUp acceptable? I also notice on some webtoons like unOrdinary that they just put a 3D background and add a blur effect when it comes to close-up shots.
Yeah, whatever gets the job done and looks good is acceptable.
@@walterostlie very epic.
I actually build some props and vehicles in a game called GMOD, I take a screenshot of what I built and trace over it.
Ahahha thank youu i needed this lol my backgrounds are literally white space not even kidding
Nothing wrong with empty white backgrounds.
walter im a new subsciber and an aspiring webtoon maker thanks i learn a lot from you on how i should get a head start of my story.. hope you see it once its done
Heya! I hope you have fun making your webtoon. Let me know when you start posting it!

because im kinda new into pc art programs, what program do you use and does 3d models comes with that or you need to download them separated
Amazing
Awesome!

Can you do Ibis paint background please
I have recently started webtoon and im struggling with backrounds like i have seen other having so so awesome backrounds while i have noting ? Makes me really unmotivated 🥺😭 i really struggle on backrounds, i hope i can find some references 3d backrounds app cheap or free . Thanks for this video it helped alot but im still unsure 🤔
What if your app is ibispaint X and there's no 3d models
Pllsss i wanna make a historical manhwa but all the backround are 3D idk what to do
Great vid! I wish I'd found it a little sooner though haha. Just spent several hours on an establishing shot of a city. Probably didn't need to draw each individual building, but hey- at least it was kind of therapeutic ;D
Hah. Prolly didn't have to, but I bet you learned a lot and up'd your skill game some. Next time you can phone it in ;-)
Welp..still on the grind still sticcn with the project but its gon take a minute since I’ve decided to change it from a manga to a webtoon.
I’ll keep you posted big bro, these vids give me all kinda of help. Won’t forget u when im up n poppin off🔥🕶🤏😎
To our success🥂✨
Looking forward to it! Do work!
Smart!
@@walterostlie hehe thxx :DD
Where do I get a shirt? I'm loving the comic!!
Thanks! I got some shirts at walterostlie.threadless.com/
I wanna ask. I’m not really good at drawing background. It comes an idea to use Google Earth to find good place and I screen capture it then I paint over it and use it as my Webtoon background, is that allowed? will I get copyrighted or banned or something?
Did I hit the like button after seeing the thumbs up establishing shot? Yes. Yes I did.😂
Muwhahaha, it worked!
thanks for this video, i really appreciate your tips!! :) i want to make my own webtoon one day as well~
You should totally make your own webtoon and then let me know when you start posting it.
lol I agree with you on being impatient lol.
May everyone have as many easy to open pickle jars as possible :)
The only reason to workout is to open pickle jars.
Place a little spoon under the edge of the lid, push it up until you hear a plop and bam! Vacuum is gone. Now even a child can open it. You're welcome ;)
@@xXMsCarlyXx uh, I'll give that a try next time. Hopefully I don't flip the jar across the room.
@@walterostlie Never happened to me and I can't take two steps without tripping over my own feet, so I think you're good.
Try Home design 3D it's a 3D mobile app that fucking helped me omfg
I liked the way you asked for a Like and Subscribe 😂, Also very Great information. this helps a bunch.
@@walterostlie Thanks so much! Good advice
Thank you so much for this video it was really helpful! I have a question though in regards to webtoon. Am I allowed to write song lyrics of popular songs or should I avoid doing that. Of course, I'm not going to write the whole lyrics but just a snippet for when a character is singing.
Legally no, but doubt anyone's gonna come looking for you.
Yeah! Screw ‘em! 😄
Me thinks I see Harry Potter in the background 👀⚡️
oh yeah, he's hanging out back there with the rest of the school.
hey guys! what programs or plugin did he used in video?
I was drawing in clipstudio. The 3d program I used to build that ugly ship was blender. The one where I traced the car was clip studio again using their prebuilt free models that come with the program.
Where's the Bryan Allen link?
briansarchive.truehart.design/
In note to the model thing you were on about: ✨Minecraft✨
*Someday, you all will make it.*
What 3d app are you using?
The one I showed was blender. Some people also use sketchup. Both are free, blender seems more intuitive to me though.
@@walterostlie Thank you!

@@walterostlie roblox is a game platform that comes with a studio to make your own game, it's not the best option but it's free so I cant complain.
Guys guys! I recommend using Roblox Studio. They have a lot of free models and most of em are sooo polished!
That looks kinda interesting, I'm gonna look more into it. Thanks.
Me: handed you the pickle jar I can’t open

I think Walter forgot Webtoon is on a 10 star scale. Oops. As long as people remember that Ghost Bats deserves all the points they'll rate it right. 10⭐ for Ghost Bats
That alllllways trips me up. Cause it's like 5 stars, like visually on the screen. I keep trying to remind myself. 10 stars 10 stars 10 stars. hah, Thanks!
