Not the typical recipe i.e .flour, salt, baking Soda and Butter milk(which does work fine)but none the less the end product turned out impressive.👍
I have seen some of ur veg rcp...all r awesome. In all kind of bread rcp u have not given any measurement....which is making it difficult to bake.Thank you
Everyone's still waiting around for "excruciating" info, related to buttermilk substitutes, in the recipe page. With my lactose intolerance, I'd go for diluted thick yogurt or sour cream... Which of these - if any - would you favor, pls ? Thanks for answering a Paris-based dedicated follower of your great "cooking-means-zest-for-life" (highly therapeutic, btw) program! I'd go as far as translating into French subtitles, people here do suffer extra historically (& culturally) - issued severe culinary inhibitions... 👍
Just wanted to mention that on the Food Wishes blog page, the video for this recipe doesn't show up with the actual recipe.
I don't think it is traditional soda bread. Looks more like a scone recipe, which could explain why he likes it ;)
Food Wishes is one of the few channels whose videos I watch to the end, so I can see if Chef John will sing "En-joy!" in tune. ;-)
Sachin Shukla exactly!! You are NOT alone on that. He nearly hit the note on the falafel one if I remember correctly!! Tricky when his jazzy piano is being overdubbed- maybe he’s a really good singer but can’t hear the piano... I like his vids so much- he can sing sharp or flat as long as he doesn’t stop making vids!
Well I'm Irish and Chef John I love ur channel :) Soda bread is made all over Ireland and every recipe differs in every family and in every restaurant so there is no right way or no wrong way ..You did a great job and I love it recipe a chef John :)
The wreck of the Donna Fitzgerald
I really need to stop watching these videos after 1AM.
They are as tasty at every other time. ;)
CologneCarter It's more that at 1AM being hungry is bad because everything is closed and it's too late to cook. D:
Corinn Heathers x
It’s food porn.
LOLOL Corinn! And here it is 3:13 am and dang if I aint heading to the kitchen to take inventory for Irish Soda Bread! LOL!!
There are few things more enjoyable than a slice of Irish soda bread with real butter.
And cheese 🇮🇪😎🇮🇪
I just made this for my St. Patrick's Day dinner party and it was a hit. I didn't use raisins or currants. I did use the tangerine zest, but I added some chopped pistachio nuts. It almost had a pumpernickel taste. It was really good. And you will be happy to know the pistachio nuts did not fall to the bottom.
I've made this repeatedly over the years, and it's a great all-purpose bread -- good for toast, sandwiches, etc. I make it less sweet (only 1Tbsp honey), use craisins instead of raisins/currants (because it's what I have on hand), and I shape it like a loaf instead of a circle. My family loves it. Thanks Chef John!
Chef John, I watched a few of your other bread videos and really enjoyed them, I was not sure though that they would work until I watched this video. I grew up in a bakery and have managed/owned a few, your Soda bread recipe is quite close to the one I used for years. While I only used raisins in mine, every step brought back fond memories. I would make about 5000 (Yes, thousand) loaves every St Patrick's day for the folks in San Francisco. Thanks for this!
Sean Owens wow!
Ah just love listening to you explain everything. Even if I'm not actually making anything, you just sound so happy and it cheers me right up. Can't wait to make this some time. Looks good!!
John, I love your videos. Not only are the recipes amazing, But I love your rhymes and jokes. As a dad you make dad jokes like no other.
I always soak the currents or raisins for about 15 minutes in the buttermilk before mixing them in. Plumps the little guys up.
Smart!
FleurPillager
Ah, nice! When dealing with raisins, I usually leave them in sugared water instead. I'll try buttermilk this time! Wait, I thought chef John asked for "dried" fruits...?
Or in some whiskey. Plumping raisins even in water makes a huge difference to in tastiness.
Wonder if you could soalk the currents in Irish Whiskey?
I went looking for an Irish soda bread recipe for tomorrow. I should have known you already had a video posted on this. Thanks to you Chef John, I will now be the Bobby Flay of my family's St. Patrick's Day. See what I did there?
I made this last night with out the oats (my daughter is allergic) and I added craisins since I couldn’t find any currants in the stores. It came out friggin fantastic. I cannot wait to make this again!
I love your kind and lyrical voice.
If you have no buttermilk .add teaspoon of lemon juice to milk works perfectly. Thank me later .blessings from Ireland 🇮🇪😎🇮🇪
I look forward to every video you produce, chef John, and this was no exception. Great recipe, perfect puns and excellent rhyming with the CSN line. 10/10.
I'm lovin the Irish puns 😂 I made this last year for St. Patrick's Day my family loved it! ☘️
This was the most delicious Irish Bread I ever made and I've been making it for my entire adult life. I'm making it for New Year's 2016.
Love the way you present and the humor is top notch
One of my favorites without a doubt
Thank you very much Chef John, I enjoy your sense of humor and of course your recipes.
Make this every year since I came across this unique Irish Soda Bread. Thank you Chef John!
Made it, came out great. Thank you for the detailed instructions.
LOL at "st. Paddy myself on the back" hahaha! Great recipe I need to try, every single thing I try of yours comes out amazingly so THANK YOU! (Now everyone loves my French baguettes and my pie crust- I made rhubarb-peach pie with it!)
I honestly enjoyed this video. You explained everything perfectly, your voice was nice to listen to and the bread came out lovely!
I made this bread. Yummy. It turned out perfect. Nice and moist on the inside with a nice thin crust on the outside. Best bread I ever made. Thank you for such a delicious recipe.
I've never had Irish Soda Bread, but I was thinking this looks like it would make THE most awesome french toast, with all those raisins, yum!
I have never before worried about an aftertaste of baking powder or baking soda in my baking, but I will from this point forward. Thanks, Chef John.
Super easy to make and it smells wonderful. I can't wait to cut into it once it cools.
Thanks Chef John! I've always wanted to make this bread! Can't wait to try it.
Love the voice over. It's fun and encouraging. Great job!
Amazing sharing ! My daughter made it today and shared the recipe and link with me ! It looks so tempting !
*My recipe for this year my friend, and I THANK YOU!*
That line - "I don't wanna St. Paddy myself on the back ..." still cracks me up!
And as aaalways, I looove it 🥰 ...🤗... thank you chef John! 😘
I could eat this all day, soda bread is so good
I've been making an Irish Soda Bread recipe that my mother got from her mother. But, this one looks excellent and I'll be making it this weekend. Thanks
This was a great recipe! Chef you never fail to deliver!
Well I'm not going to get all up on my high horse about your potato and drinking comments about us Irish as we all know they were tongue and cheek, plus my profile picture would not support any such argument :D
So yea, never seen that recipe before. Way more complicated than my own.
I just mix 500g of both Flour and Natural Yoghurt, 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt, mix together with as little work as possible, cross on the top and throw in oven. From start to finish (excluding pre-heating the oven) it can be done in less than 5 mins, inc cleaning up.
Oh and yes, the cross is obligatory, its the law
Thank god you said that ever saw soda made like that in my life, Belfast northern Ireland x
Again guys I've never seen soda bread made like that. Mine would be more like yours Ethnod. I'm a Portadown guy myself for my sins
I’ve made soda bread (no fruit) several times before, and it has been really dry every time except ONE. I’m getting ready to make Chef John’s recipe tonight...we’ll see how it turns out for me.
My brown bread, on the other hand, is always spectacular. I prefer to make muffins instead of a single loaf, and I sweeten it a LOT - and I include fresh blueberries. It cooks much faster (about 15 minutes), and the doneness is always more consistent than when I put it in a tin.
Sadly for me, I’m not from Ireland. We’ve taken vacations in the southern half of the Republic for the last two years (the M6 between Galway and Dublin is about as far north as we’ve been), and we just returned to the US from Ireland last week. Beautiful land, people, food, and culture!
Enniskillen here and yous are right. This is just American's messing up our traditions as usual.
@@Mandaxx25 Not far from Enniskillen myself. Nope definitely not a traditional Irish Soda bread.
I find your videos very enjoying. Thanks for the good recipes and your cooking expertise.
Hi Chef John, I love all your recipes and videos. I have never made Irish Soda Bread before and decided to try your recipe. My hubby said the "perfect" word. Actually, he said it was PERFECT. Not only is your recipe delicious but my whole house smelled heavenly. Thanks for sharing the love. 🍀
Love your recipes.. they always work out perfectly. Thanks for all the tips and the humour too ! ( I am crazy over your various recipes for chicken wings.. sooo delish !)
I just made this and the crumb was perfect, moist and delicate! I soaked the currants and raisins in a shot of scotch, some apple cider, and some hot water for a few hours before baking to plump them up. I also substituted 1/4 cup of the white flour for rye flour, along with the whole wheat Chef John already used, and I took a cue from Melissa Clark's recipe and added some caraway seeds.
Everything you do is amazing!
First thing tomorrow! Btw, if you wet the knife, it will slide smoothly. A smooth and very very sharp knife will do a great job!
Thanks for the recipe!
A CSN reference...you are officially my favorite!
You deserve so much love !
very true about the honey....the closer to home its produced the more of your local allergens it combats.....:)
I made this today, except I didn't have any currants, so I used dried cranberries.
And it was amazing.
Yes I did was absolutely delicious!
Great recipe for soda bread, Chef John!
Great toasted, too!
It's the perfect bread for breakfast.
Huzzah! New video! Thank you Chef John!
I heard *Holy Flour* instead of _Whole Wheat_ Flour around 0:30, since my mind was still set on _Saint_ Patrick's Day, lol.
This is gold Chef John, My kids and I love your videos, Thank you for this recipe my family will be baking this on St. Patrick's Day.
Thanks John ~ I'm retired now, but I remember those 47 years in the biz. 200 lbs. of Corned Beef & still ran out!!!
As always...Thank You!
Well, 8 years later I found your video. I’ve looked at about a dozen other videos, including Americas Test Kitchen, and your methodology and explanations make a lot sense. I found another recipe that includes Irish Whiskey 🥃. Probably a bit before, in and after the recipe 😉
Hello
It worked fine, tastes great and so easy to make...
Thanks for the video
Kay
+Dagobert1234 Good on ya for reporting an actual try of the recipe!
You have a good voice for this. Also watched when you made pumpkin pie. Good recipes and techniques, thanks for sharing
Great video! Reminds me of my Granny. The local honey thing is not true, but it almost makes sense! Wish it were that easy to deal with allergies...
I love the crust on soda bread but it you prefer a softer crust wrap the bread in a tea towel as it cools.
My favorite! Great video💝
Good evening dear chef John. Gorgoues recipe, thank 💕 ♥️ you
I'm so glad I watched this before bed lol it reminded me to make my overnight oats xD
You're the Darby O'Gill of your dough slashing skill!
69adrummer YAS!
Did you notice Sean Connery in that movie?
@@philipwebb960 Way back when he had hair.
Did my eyes and ears deceive me? There was no mention or addition of our favorite ingredient - cayenne! Actually, this is a beautiful simple recipe Chef John - definitely worth the baking!!
Apparently, you can freeze a stick of butter and grate it finely into the dry ingredients
i was just thinking if that would be suitable. definitely won't be able to find one of those pastry things where i live
Joseph just use your hands, if you crumble the pieces with your fingers it will have the same effect
@@UKTopGun .... should probably be “cold hands”, right?
@@NEILZEE11 cold butter, just from the fridge and use your hands
@@NEILZEE11 soak them in a sinful of ice water for 5 minutes first😉
Mouth watering. Love my Irish recipes that don't primarily feature potato.
I love your voice and your jokes!! Definitely a pick me up every week :)
Thank you for the recipe and fun video Chef :)
Since seeing this a couple of years ago I've made it a dozen times, always great. Yes, not basic traditional however upscaled and delicious. Thanks Chef John; So, haters here back off the freak off.
LMFAO "Ward off the devil." Hardest I've laughed on food wishes, thanks Chef John.
It's true, we cut a cross in the bread (we don't call it an X) to release the devil.. Same as hot cross buns (which are made around Easter)!
Seriously. Except, I did laugh harder at the beginning of his "Nipples Of Venus" video. OMG. Sometimes I play just the first part of that video, if I'm feeling low. 💖
Thank you! I think I might try it for Thanksgiving!
Again: Chef John you're the man, man!
soooo good!
I have decided to not make my Irish Soda Bread to try yours, looks really good and Happy Saint Patrick's day to you all!
I ended a lifetime of terrible cravings for breads and various baked goods by doing my own baking; the hallmark of which is Irish Soda Bread. Why this should be I have no idea but I love it.
I love this with strawberry preserves in the morning with some nice hot coffe
jam / coffee
I'm trying this recipe today for the St. Pat's dinner I'm going to. It's usurping my variation of Martha's, so please deliver, Chef John!
Also, I learned last year from a YT vid of this great Aussie gal making scones, to grate frozen butter into the flour instead of cutting it in. And I have been and I'll *never* go back! So much easier!
Everyone loved it! Including me! I made one loaf plain and one with fruit. I used dried cranberries, dried chopped apricots, and golden raisins, first soaked in rum.
Chef John, your puns were on point in this video.
So this is where my baking bowl has is! ☘️
Love your puny humor.
that clover design table cloth at the end... so Irish :D
Great video!
Adding the grated lemon or orange or tangerine is what makes this so delicious. When I make it tomorrow, I plan to use maple syrup (because I'm from northern New England and don't have any honey). I plan to add golden raisins along with the currants and go light on the caraway seed.
dang. two years late finding this comment...I would have come to your house!
Oh man that looks good. I think I will pair this bread with some elk and barley stew.
looks so good :D
Best served warm with a bit of butter and a cup of tea
I'm making it right now
Yummy thankyou
HAHAHA i would go and buy IRish butter as well
I remember trying this after someone I knew made it ... Irish soda brick was more like it. I'd like to try it when it's been well-made.
I made soda bread today had in with spreadable cheese omg I can cook .well bake 😁🇮🇪
Prepare for the angry Irish mob complaining about how this recipe is wrong lol
Don't see any so far. I've never even eaten soda bread.
Well it was more of a fruit loaf. Soda Bread or Farls only use Flour, Buttermilk, Baking Soda and Butter. Though as he stated it was his take on it. It tastes great when straight off a freshly baked. Do miss some things with being on a gluten free diet.
This is spotted dog, I always enjoy your channel but maybe checking your info would be a tad bit better.
Irish aren't Italians, mate.
In Ireland this is called a fruit soda. True soda bread is an everyday bread that has just flour, baking soda, salt and buttermilk. Some add eggs and/or butter, but most don’t.
Chef John, can you make a upgraded fettuccine alfredo recipe? I love your recipes and I would definitely try it. (:
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to give this a try, and pair it with some cabbage soup for St. Paddy's Day. I wonder if I can substitute steel cut oats for rolled/quick oats?
Yeah a lot of people don't understand that you only need to dust raisins or nuts if you're putting them into a liquid batter, not a bread dough. The thick consistency of the dough supports the dried fruits, while thinner batters do not.
We add Caraway to ours, and a little butter and a sprinkling of sugar across the top. So much more flavorful.
