Iris, you are one of the most talented people I’ve ever seen. I wish I could say meet lol. You have such good tone and there will be many bumps along the way but it’s what toughens you up and grow to be a better person. I definitely agree about the style choice thing though. Your singing is amazing so it must be the song choice right? I’ve literally added all of your covers to my playlist and removed all of the originals because you’re that good. I’m now at 325 songs thanks to you! Of course I already had songs in there before that but your covers added so much more! I listen to your covers to go to bed. They’re amazing! I'm glad I found your channel last year. You should definitely do more of these interpersonal videos more often, it'll help with your confidence and it'll make us feel more connected with you!
You have a good attitude, cause we kind of expect a "no" in the music industry very often, so success means having the fortitude to keep trying again anyway. You have a great voice, and as I tell my own students, you just need the confidence to match it!
The best thing you can do to get better at performing (aka confidence in front of people) is just do it a LOT. Check in with yourself mentally and remember why you're doing it. Then just keep doing it, and it'll get easier over time. I still get nervous when I sing, but I'm lightyears more confident than when I started performing. You'll find your confidence too, and I can't wait to see where you end up!

Im in the same boat as others, I dont usually comment, but I think it is a very tough and endearing thing you went through. It's hard to pick up the pieces from getting it all broken in things you love to do to make you question yourself or your talents, but as cliche as it is, its really only up from here. Plus, I have your videos on cycle since its sooo goood so I know you'll be fine. I really think theres merit to how it was all setup as well. Thanks for posting this!

You just gotta keep playing in front of people doing solo's and you'll get comfortable with it. It's all about getting all the experience under your belt and it will get easier to do and to navigate gig deals and the like. Keep at it. You'll do fine.

@@IrisZhang Just grind it out. :) You already do solo's on your videos as it is, granted, it's a controlled environment but for some people it helps to think they are just doing a video when they first start out doing live stuff.
Either way, the couple people I've worked with started out uncomfortable when they did live performances but they've always beat it but just keep doing gigs and it just becomes second nature. Good luck! :)

Ok so here is some advice you didn't ask for but i hope that it will help.
Whenever taking a gig always find out what your target audience is like, meaning age sex ethnicity.
This gives you an idea of what the typical and topical songs to make in your set.
I did a wedding once and i sang marry me by Train and all of me by John Legend. All of me just came out and was in heavy rotation on the radio so it was ever where. So people were tired of hearing it. They liked Marry me and it got a good response.
So the moral of the story is don't pick a song just because you like it. Pick them based on your target audience.
I hope this helped, I like your voice, the cool tones with warm featherings. Drops of Jupiter was good.

Not to tell you my whole life story, but I dropped out of college/uni after a year. And it was the hardest period of my life, especially with Asian parents. Your self worth really comes into question, but I am so glad it happened. It had to happen for me to be as happy as I am now.

Iris - you are an amazing singer! Don't give up. It may not have been that they thought you were bad, but perhaps you just weren't the vibe that they were going for at the restaurant. You music is on the soft side so perhaps they wanted something more "party"??? 🙈 After all， music is a very personal preference. If I had a restaurant, I would hire you to sing at my restaurant :) 繼續加油！
also don't forget Sean Mendes thinks you're amazing! so you don't need to put so much weight on what some random ass restaurant manager thinks :)

Did you ever ask them why?Sometimes it helps to ask so you know what maybe you can work on or maybe just to have some sort of closure. Im a facepainter and I always ask when clients arent happy.

Iris, I know this has been over a year ago now and hopefully you've experienced more positive results with other gigs you have have been involved with. It's hard to know why someone would essentially FIRE you from your gig, but perhaps your style of music wasn't suitable to the owner of that venue. It's really hard to know because from my vast experiences on the net and listening almost exclusively to "Home Singers" I find your music style both refreshing and as good as OR better than many. If I was in the restaurant you sang at I believe I would have enjoyed it immensely. That being said, since you have the talent and ability I had to wonder WHY would they fire such a delight and talent as you. I KNOW it wasn't your singing or playing because you do both very well, so what's left? I know this is over a year late and maybe everything I'm staying to you is a moot point by now, but did anyone do anything to prepare you for this gig? It was a two night fill in, and did anyone tell you what type of music was expected? I've been to steakhouses and casinos and whenever I heard them playing it was usually one or two people on either a piano or guitar. i never heard anyone I didn't like and the music was vastly different at times, but most of it was pop tunes like you said you played. I'm just thinking maybe your friend or someone familiar with the music playlist might have been able to offer you some suggestions. I'm sure the restaurant had something in mind, and would it have been possible for you to contact the restaurant directly to ascertain the "typical" music preferences? I'm only saying this because seeing your personality I know this deeply affected you because you already didn't feel comfortable with playing for an audience of this type yet. Let me assure you your music and talent is THERE. i hope you've made some progress despite pandemic issues and you're already a success. Your music is lovely.

Well, my story is kinda my life story and it isn't really a positive one.
I grew up in a stable family at least I thought until I got 12 when my parents divorced. In the aftermath, my father was the one bringing stability into our family. My mother has diabetes type 1 since she was 12 and never learned to handle her health condition well.
Means over the years my mother where a single mom, my sister and I had to call ambulance numerous times and make sure she stays alive, I grew into the father role more and more and didn't even think about my future, every time I saw an ambulance on the streets when I was going home from school or friends it would hit me like a rock the feeling of fear and unsafety, that my mother needs help. Wich, I started to go out less with friends and neglect hobbies etc.
This went on until my Grandfather had a stroke and we needed to take care of him, we moved out of the city and since my sister was in education as a hotel manager and my mother had a job as a secretary, it was my duty to care about him which meant I didn´t go after dreams and hobbies at that time neither.
After my Grandfather passed and some time was passing my mother had issues with her job, they didn´t pay her for about 7 months wich was ok financially since we had the heritage from my grandfather. Unfortunately, my mother was able to spend it all in 1 year even sold the apartment my grandfather owned.
So out of nowhere, our family was kicked out of our home, well my mother knew what was going on since she got all the mail, but didn't bother to tell us until it was too late. we were homeless for about 8 months, my mother my sister and me also 2 dogs.
My mother was multiple times in the psychiatry and I also went 2 times, at that time I was 23 didn't have graduation with wich I could have had a job I would like and also the fear of losing my mother never was lost, the problems never ended.
I moved into a flat with a person from one of my psychiatry stays and started and education as a retail salesperson.
It was the first time in my life I thought ok everything is going well. Once my mother called me for help instead of calling the ambulance, so I had to take a cap over 80 km to her. So that part didn't change.
My roommate got sassier and sassier about the smallest things, I learned he didn´t tell me everything and he had bipolar.
Who would have guessed the flat didn't work out, I didn´t find a place to stay so I needed to move back to were my mother was and stop the eduction.
At that time my mother was in a flat from the local community and they told me I couldn't move in the community I lived before needed to take care of me but they wouldn´t. After some time I went to my sisters flat and she helped me with the officials to get money and go the third time into psychiatry.
I moved into a flat with 3 other people and it went good, I thought again the hard part of my life is over, guessed wrong again went again into psychiatry and finally found the place I am living right now.
I still struggle to find a job, especially because I was so long just dealing with surviving. But here I got great people helping me and growing into my self and learning to take care of me.
I am now 29 don't have a job, no education that gets me into the field of jobs I want and a self-esteem problem.
But I'm hanging on and never give up to get to where I want to be as a person.
TBH my life wasn´t as hard as you hear from people that have it worse and that's also part of my personality, asking myself:" you didn´t have it hard, why do you suck" Well I'm not as strong as others, I grew up differently and it's ok to have a difficulty finding my way. At least I started to accept how I am and started to recognise what I need to change to get where I want to.
I left out some details since I wouldn´t feel comfortable with sharing too much, even though I share already a good amount of text.
Thanks a lot for everyone reading this, it helps me to talk about it and also write.
BTW listening to music was always a safety net that kept me from falling further down.
