Every Doctor Who Companion 1963-2013 (Celebrating 50 Years)

- Celebrating 50 years of the show we all know and love, I have made this compilation of every Doctor Who companion to have been in the show since its very first episode in 1963. Enjoy :)
And please, before you go commenting about incorrect episode counts/story counts for companions, or who should even qualify as a companion, I am already well aware.
Don't forget to like/subscibe if you enjoyed!
Check out my Facebook page at / 181888941953514
Just so everyone knows, I've already been made well aware of all the episode miscounts - at the time I made the video, I had not watched all these stories so I had automatically assumed companions were in every episode of every story they were in, leading to some incorrect numbers. Also, numerous people have commented, "Why didn't you include ____" or "___ isn't a companion." The definition of companion is a pretty loose term, and while I disagree with some of the choices I made, the companions in the video are officially considered such by the BBC (though the one-off companions should have been separated from the others). So, there is no need to go commenting about either of these issues. Thanks!
Also well aware of that. The above comment was intended to stop comments such as this because they have already been made, but have been buried under so many others.
As with everyone else I'm sure that I have a few additions with what I would personally consider a companion, but that would just be my opinion as a longtime Whovian ... all in all Merg, you nailed it pretty damn good as far as I can see :)
Thanks :D
Merganman4 could you make an updated version featuring other companions. Companions you could include in an updated version:
Jackie,
Rosita,
Luke,
Handles,
Rigsy,
Bill,
Nardole,
Captain Lethbridge Stewart (Twice Upon a Time),
Graham,
Ryan,
Tanya
How many companions has he had all together
RIP Elizabeth Sladen
She died of cancer in 2011.
+Atheist Dalek
What?
Also RIP: Jacqueline Hill, Michael Craze, Nicholas Courtney, Caroline John, Mary Tamm.
No way, Romana 1 too? 😭
I miss Sarah Jane. :(
She is fantastic :)
Sally Sparrow would have made a grand companion. Can't you just see Sally and the Doctor traveling through time and space together?
jms3spinoon YES
jms3spinoon I thought about that the day Bill was announced, I was was secretly wishing it was Sally
She's in expanded literature, kind of
tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Sally_Sparrow_(What_I_Did_on_My_Christmas_Holidays_by_Sally_Sparrow)
I don't always care about one -off characters but Sally was pretty cool. I actually felt like I want to see more of her in the show.
Sally was so cute UwU it would have been so cool to see them travelling together
Love that first pic of Ace. Wouldn't mind having a poster of that. Bad-ass!
More like bad-ACE.
*badumm tss*
So there you are, enjoying all the companions pulling a face or smiling and being their basic selves... Then this pops up: 5:00 - Dorothy "Ace" McNitro-9DalekCybermanSlayerShane.
bruh XD

Nooooooooooooooo
I love how you morphed the music to fit each era of the show, it felt really well done and professional.
Thank you :D
that was good wasnt it!
I the only one that thinks David Morrissey would make an awesome doctor himself?
Ikr! It would make for such a great story arc as well.
a bird may make a very good companion
GUYS THE LONGEST TIME SERVING COMPANION IS THAT CYBERMAN HEAD!! It was with the doctor for 2,000 years on trensalore in Christmas
300 and it's handles
In terms of episodes, it's the Brigadier. In terms of on screen time, it's James Robert McCrimmon
Payton W wow, that's kinda true. To be honest handles is my favourite companion. Next to Sarah Jane and K9
Handles was the greatest companion
@@AllonsyRapunzel no theyre about even Jamie was in 22 of the 24 2nd doctor stories, and his run included the monsters that were evil and war games, but the brig had close to 30 stories but with a shorter count
And Jamie McCrimmon, not the most stories, but the most episodes ... 110! I doubt that will ever be matched as a total - definitely candidate for best companion, if not, certainly, the most loyal!!
In present day terms, that would be 55 episodes, or around 4 or 5 series
Up there with the best!!! and he is/was/will be - whatever the tense is .......
he was also in the 2 doctors with troughton and C baker!
no he was in 11 STORIES averaging 5 episodes per story, by modern standards that would be 11 2 or 3 parters
My favorite Companion. He was fantastic.
I feel like Ben Jackson (Michael Craze) looks kind of like Peeta in the hunger games....
You're not alone! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that!
Merganman4 So do I
Me toooooooooo :D
Lol! I thought that too but thought I was imagining it. Glad others saw it too.
I'm currently watching all the episodes of classic doctor who and I'm up to Victoria and Jamie being companions
+George Radcliffe I love Jamie. Brilliant and funny lines
Jamie is my favourite companion! The first classic episode I saw was Tomb of the Cybermen and it got me hooked
AllonsyRapunzel Jamie is my favourite too! :)
George Radcliffe How far are you now? Watched all of it yet?
he actually cant there are 17 stories missing including one huge 12 parter!
I think Jackie Tyler should have been included.
Yeah
Oh no she is more like one of the villains lol
She's still not as bad as Martha's mother
Yeah, Jackie Tyler never helped the Master take over the UK lol
Neither Martha's or Rose's mother are bad as Donna's mother. That woman could have made no evil alliance, but she was horrible to her daughter. Even the Doctor points that out.
It's crazy to me that there were so many companions before. It makes me really want to watch the older episodes. Great video by the way!
Thanks! I suggest you do watch some of them, if you get the chance! The budget may have been bad, but some of the stories themselves are really good!
grew up on classic dr who. i cant get into the modern stuff. not the same without romana or tegan
900 female 9 male and 1 robot dog...
Spling That's about the size of it XD
Spling
can u imagine 900 of Susan all at once
Spling and a robot.
And a group of animatronics and Captain Rex. Both I think might be good companions.
10 had so many good companions, but 11 had some GREAT episodes... I can't choose!
+aBlueCat Why not both? :D
Jamie McCrimmon is the best companion! (Alongside Sarah Jane but I prefer Jamie)
The dude at 1:36 looks like Peeta from the Hunger Games
***** lol
ben Jackson +peeta naval baker stealthy fighter
Actually Peeta looks like him.
I think Captain Jack Harkness needs to come back on Doctor Who
I totally agree! I would love to see him return alongside Peter CapaldI!
Merganman4 why do you like Captain Jack Harkness
He's a real boss character, don't you think? I love his mannerisms and way of doing things
I do too
@@beckymayne1250 HE'S BACK !
Best companion EVER.........Sarah Jane Smith! From the 'Golden Age" of Doctor Who, when he wore a floppy hat, long scarf and.........oh yes, TROUSERS!!!
some of the earlier companions have had longer runs than some of the Doctors
In terms of episode count, for sure, but this is due to the fact that back then they produced a lot more episodes per Season then they do now (back in the 60's, 70's, and even the mid 80's). Up until the 3rd Doctors era, seasons had episode counts of in between late 30's and mid 40's! From the 3rd Doctor until the 5th Doctors last season, it was around mid-20's, and then from then on it was around the same as it is today
Merganman4 which is why its sad for Colin Baker and McCoy, they only had 13-14 episodes per series.
Yeah, and unfortunately for them they didn't get to choose when they left :(
For Colin Baker, he had the same amount of screentime per season as 3,4 and 5, but in 50 minute episodes rather than 25. However, with McCoy, he had considerably less (14x25 min episodes per season, half the amount of most other doctors). In the 60s, they churned out about 40 25 min episodes a year (about 20 in 45/50 minute terms).
Actually, Colin's 50 minute episodes only lasted one season, Season 22. His other 18 episodes (vs the 13 of Season 22) were the standard 25 minutes. So for Season 22, he did get the same screen time, but not Season 23.
Thanks - i loved seeing all the 'companions' even the one-off people. enjoyed the memories :}
I would question whether Adelaide Brooke was a companion in any meaningful sense of the word. Good character, but did not fill a companion role within the story.
Also, if you're having Jackson Lake then you really ought to have Rosita as well
The reason Adelaide Brooke is there is because she does fill in the companion role during that episode, just as Lady Christina and Jackson Lake do in the previous episodes. Although I should've had Rosita in the video, the reason I chose not to include her is because I feel the story could've easily gone on without her and that she didn't contribute much to it.
The audio quality is just 👌
May have been mentioned already: Frazier Hines also played Jamie McCrimmon in _The Two Doctors_ (6W), 1985. Nyssa was also known as Nyssa of Traken. Peri is short for Periguine. Melaine was also called Mel.
Agimaso Schandir Actually, Peri is a girl's name. Perry is a boy's name. Perry is short for Periguine, yes. But Peri is short for Perpugilliam.
Been watching all of Lis’s run again at the moment. Up to the Ark in Space. Loving it! We miss you, Sarah.
Nina Tavernier, I would DEFINITELY recommend it! It's much slower paced and the effects are kinda cheesy, but if you love the New Series, I'd definitely suggest you check out the Classics as well! Unless you want to watch all 695 episodes of the Classic Series, I'd suggest you watch a couple of highlight stories for each Doctor, and then decide if you want to watch it all. I'd recommend the following:
1st Doctor: The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964, 6 Parts) & The Tenth Planet (1966, 4 Parts, the first regeneration)
2nd Doctor: The Tomb of the Cybermen (1967, 4 Parts) & The Enemy of the World (1967/1968, 6 Parts)
3rd Doctor: Inferno (1970, 7 Parts) & The Three Doctors (1972/1973, 4 Parts, first multi-Doctor story)
4th Doctor: Genesis of the Daleks (1975, 6 Parts) & City of Death (1979, 4 Parts)
5th Doctor: Earthshock (1982, 4 Parts) & The Five Doctors (1983, 1 Part)
6th Doctor: Attack of the Cybermen (1985, 2 Parts) & The Two Doctors (1985, 3 Parts)
7th Doctor: Remembrance of the Daleks (1988, 4 Parts) & Battlefield (1989, 4 Parts)
8th Doctor: Doctor Who (1996, his only full appearance < I'm guessing you've seen The Night of the Doctor, his regeneration, if you're caught up on the New Series)
Those are my personal recommendations for each, but if you choose to decide on your own, by all means go ahead, and enjoy! :)
No problem, glad you're enjoying it so much :D
+Merganman4 ark in space and caves of androzani I would add agree with the rest though
+Merganman4 you missed someone for the video can you guess who its from new who
Doge It all depends on what you define as companion. Multiple people have mentioned others whom I have not included (i.e. Jenny from The Doctor's Daughter) or who came around after this video was uploaded (Handles/Danny Pink). It all depends on how you define companion. Who were you thinking of?
jackie tyler she was in quit the handful of episodes and had traveled in the tardis i would call her a companion Merganman4
HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN IMBECILE!
This is fantastic and looks great! One suggestion tho - many of the companions did not appear in every episode of the stories they appeared in, especially in the 60's. And some companions appeared in more episodes than their original stay (ie Harry in Android Invasion, the Brig for stories in different eras, Sarah Jane Susan, etc in the 5 Doctors), especially in new Who episodes where Rose, Martha, Jack and Donna all came back for later stories. Still, lots of hard work and really awesome!
Thanks, I appreciate the comment! And good suggestions :)
Is it just me or does Michael Craze look a bit like peeta from The Hunger Games?
He does indeed. A few others have mentioned it below as well :)
I didn't really notice :D
Uh, yeah I just want to point out that Craig Owens, Madam Vastra, Jenny Flint, and Strax are not really companions.
I'd say the paternoster gang are definitely companion, Craig I'd disagree with. He never even stepped into the Tardis
The Doctor does call him his companion in Closing Time though. He's pretty much on the same level as Christina and other 'one-off' companions, meaning it's up to opinion.
in that regard neither is Kyle minogh, the lady captain and Wilf!
I love the use of the various themes in the background!
thank you!
This is amazing work! Would love to see it continued. 🙂
Thank you! I can't promise an update any time soon though as these compilations take a lot of time to make and there are new compilations I'm currently working to get done. Perhaps I can make an update after Series 11 airs.
love Jamie and Victoria
New companion named Bill!
Now Yaz graham and ryan
When Catherine showed up,I hugged my phone
Love this. I actually agree with *all* these characters being companions.
Could maybe done without Bonny Langford though
K-9! The guy who did the voice got it perfect. Yes, Master!
Just saying you have a lot of people on here who aren't companions
The Brig, Benton, Yates, Micky, Harkness, Willferd, River, Owens, Vestra, Jenny, and Strax are recurring characters, not companions
Astrid and the 2009 special companions are just one off characters who happen to team up with the Doctor while he has no companions, by that logic the person he was teamed with in the Deadly Assassin should be here
For this list, I was going by a couple of sources (including the BBC's list for the Classic Series) although I tweaked it a bit, as I consider those characters as companions. The 2009 specials characters are referred to as one off companions much of the time, and while I can see where you're coming from with Craig and Wilfred, the other characters you listed I consider companions due to the fact that they helped the Doctor on multiple occasions in many different stories, all of them also having met more than 1 incarnation of the Doctor (The Brig has met most Classic incarnations, Benton 2, 3, & 4, Yates 3 & 4, Mickey and Harkness 9 & 10, River 10 & 11, and the Paternoster Gang 11 & 12). Anyways, that's just how I see it, as there is no fixed definition of 'companion' in Doctor Who. Thanks for your comment :)
Merganman4 how come everyone in this lists always forget Rory's dad? He was more of a companion than most of the ones mentioned in your list that only appeared in 1 episode.
Merganman4
Also, thanks for posting this vid. :)
Josh Torres Thank you for watching :D And yeah, after posting it I realized there were a few people I left out that I should've added in, others that I shouldn't have, etc. I'll probably make an updated version of this after this years Christmas Special :)
I would argue that Mickey was a companion, at least for part of Series 2 as he did travel in the TARDIS. I would also consider River to be a companion due to her familiarity with the TARDIS, and the implications of off-screen adventures. The rest could be considered "allies", I suppose.
the 2010 theme was FANTASTIC + 80s & 67~ 79 + 2013
Well i liked it! LOVED it. Been a Dr Who fan my whole life. You did a grand job.
Thanks a lot!
Even though Jamie’s 110 episodes would only be 55 in modern episodes (because episodes now are much longer) 55 is still more than pretty much every doctor except 4
4th had 42 STORIES or 178 episodes, or split in half for modern 79, NO ONE has ever matched him, or ever will!
@@julieeverett7442 Mr. Smort, we are talking about companions.
@@omg7255 sorry yes, with the brig just behind him
'Come along Ponds...'
Sophie Aldred: the best companion in past, present or future, and perhaps the nicest, sweetest woman on Planet Earth
Ben and Polly, Leela and Acr are my favorites
Like all lists, it forgets the companions from the 8th Doctor's run on Radio.
That said this is still a good retelling of Companion history.
It wasn't that I forgot the audio dramas, in my Celebrating 50 Years videos I focus on the actual show itself and not other media. However, maybe in the future I'll do one encompassing more than just the show :)
Fair enough. Some of the radio show are available through torrents if you haven't tried them.
Thanks, I might try that out sometime soon
Although I don't classify a lot of these characters as companions, they have all played a part in the history of the Worlds greatest Television programme. And a whole lot more companions to come. Here's to Nardole and Bill.
Adric and Jamie are my lads, always thought that they were the best. RIP Adric.
I haven't watched earthshock or war games yet. I don't want it to be over!
Of the first two Doctor's my favourite companions were Vicki, Steven, Victoria, Jamie and Susan.
@steve gale She was both. She still did what any other companion did, she travelled in the TARDIS with him and helped him save places.
No one mentions professor Ian :c
Nice video I grew up with Mathew Waterhouse he lived next store to me and I knew sophie A.k.a ace
Very cool!
Why thank you
Amelia Pond
Wilfred was brilliant!
NitroSkyz true but he wasn't a companion.
@@jordanmankelow3433 agreed
He’s great. RIP Bernard
Sebastian Tran (FadedFourth) - There's actually more than one - both Katarina and Leela are without a last name (although you might not count Leela since she was born on another planet in a tribe of regressed humans - although I personally count her). Both do make sense though, since Katarina was barely in the show before she was killed off (and she was from the past, with none of the other characters from her time period having last names) and Leela for the previously stated reason :)
They may have had full names in the original screenplay lib, but after a bit of editing..?
ridwan roshan (wouldn't let me reply for some reason), she never did appear in 2009. However, she was in The End of Time Part 2 (which aired in 2010), but only as a cameo and before she even met the Doctor.
My Favourite is Brigadier
Nice, some of the companion episode numbers are wrong but still nice and I'm glad you included the UNIT boys.
Sam Thanks :) And yeah, at the time of making this I had assumed that each companion had been in every episode of their respective serials. Happy you enjoyed!
6:21 - Hey it’s Donna Noble. She’s one of my favourite companions. She’s funny when she said she going to ten pin bowling in her Wedding dress
I really would`ve loved Lynda Moss (last two episodes of Series 9) to be a companion...
01:35 Josh Hutcherson apparently is a time traveler :D
Congratulations! *claps hands*
I wish I had been born either in or earlier than 1963
While Katarina was in two stories that had a total of 16 episodes, she only appeared in 5 of those episodes before her character was killed off. Also, since companions did not always appear in every episode of every story they were featured in, several of the other episode totals are incorrect. (For example, Dodo Chaplet appeared in 19 episodes, not 24 episodes.)
I've been made aware of that since I made this video, having both watched all the episodes (reconstructions included) last summer + plenty of others have commented on these mistakes. Thanks for correcting my the mistake, though!
Peri always was and will be, the best
How come Chang Lee is included, but not Bret Vyon?
Chang Lee & Grace Holloway were included because there's a limited selection of TV companions for the 8th Doctor. Personally, I wouldn't count Sara Kingdom or Katarina as companions, however they are considered companions by the BBC (whereas Bret Vyon is not)
I wasn't talking about Grace Holloway. Isn't Chang Lee considered to be a companion as Bret Vyon is? They're both listed as "narratively ambiguous" on the Doctor Who wikia, some I'm sure that it's not impossible to list Bret as a companion in some way, shape or form.
Well, I'd conider Chang as much of a companion as Grave due to the 8th Doctor limited TV companions
Poor Adric :(
It would've been good if Moffat could've given Strax a better build-up story - a journey from being a clone warrior to a free-thinking ally of the Doctor. (Something more than just turning up as someone on a punishment exile)
Yeah, that definitely would've been more interesting and believable to see
Peri will always be the Hottest companion. Not my favorite but def the prettiest I wish she was back with Tom Baker or at least in more of Peter Davidson's stories. As for my favorite i would have to go with the most popular...Sarah Jane Smith. But i really like Jo Grant, Victoria(2nd Doctor) and Zoe a lot as well.
Paul Dianno I think Lalla Ward and Mary Tamm are hotter
Since you are including characters that have assisted The Doctor and were not necessarily companions, there is a slight argument to include none other than The Master in this video! Obviously he is more known as an enemy but he did actually help The Doctor against aliens in a few Pertwee stories and in Logopolis if I recall correctly.
It is true that he has helped the Doctor in the past, but overall he does remain a villain and most of the time he helps the Doctor to assist his own plans rather than for the sake of the Doctor - although they were once friends on Gallifrey before they became renegades.
You put a lot of pseudo companions but hey they did help a little I just wish we could have seem what type of companion Christiana would have been. But trust me if I could thumbs this up a million times I would!
Thank you!!

Already been over this in comments below - at the time of creating this, I wasn't aware that there were so many episodes without companions, and had assumed that the companion was present in every episode of each story they were in. I've since learned otherwise, however :)
The Brigadier, Nicolas courtney 117 episodes
I'm the biggest doctor who fan!!!!!!!!!
This is great! I wish we could see the episode where Vicky left- I presume this is one of the deleted ones!! Wish I still had my 100+ classic Who videos from my teen years- I was made to get rid of them when we moved house.. SOmeone got them all on Freecycle! :-(
Yes, Vicki's final serial - The Myth Makers - is missing, unfortunately. That sucks that you had to get rid of those episodes :/ At least if you're not in Region 1 they aren't too hard to get (over here in Canada a large number of them have gone 'out of print' and sell for extremely expensive prices).
you CAN listen to it, Mythmakers, and all of the lost stories are on audio!
rip Elizabeth Sladen
Wish we'd seen more of Liz and Harry :/
they deserved better than just being written out so suddenly!
Now another companion joins the list: Handles :(
Yes, indeed. I hope that Peter Capaldi has a Handles Mark II that would be like the New Series K-9. Handles was awesome!
Merganman4 I would love K9 to come back, hed work so well with Capaldi i think
Add Rusty the friendly Dalek to the waiting list.
Wait - why isn't K9 listed thru 2008 also? He was in School Reunion with Sarah Jane in 2006, as well as a cameo in Journey's End in 2008 to help pull the Earth back! And actually they were also both in The Five Doctors as well in 1983! The poor little tin dog always gets the short end of the leash, cheek! ;-)
You've hit the nail on the head right there - they were cameo appearances. Although you're right that he should be listed as 2006 as well, since he had a more substation role there.
Brigadier: 1968-1975,1983,1989
I only did the years when the character was a regular companion, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart didn't become regular until 1970 and 1983 and 1989 were single-story appearances. The reason I put Sarah Jane in the 2000's, however, is because she was still connected to the show through the Sarah Jane adventures, albeit only appearing on Doctor Who a couple of times (which are the years I have in the video)
Yeah
twice for 83
None of the One Episode actors who appeared in the 2007 - 2009 timeframe qualify as Companions. They were simply characters the Doctor encountered in those single episodes. Similarly, many of the later characters, who only appeared in a couple of episodes with the Doctor, but never travelled with him qualify. SO THUMBS DOWN FOR POOR EDITING CHOICES.
had such a crush on turlough
Ever thought of updating it with another ten years worth of characters.
Without making any promises...keep an eye out when we're closer to the anniversary!
Wait... why didn't the music change after... Ohhhh there it is... kinda a late transistion there. Nice you got the facts down thou. Good work.
Thanks! Yeah I realize now some of the transitions were a bit late, but I didn't have the best of editing software back then (just Windows Live Movie Maker) and my editing skills itself wasn't the best either (not saying they're perfect now, just improved) :)
I understand. I've done that before to. Still really great man.
i do count the UNIT men as comapnions, and IMO although Benton and Lethbridge-Stewart travelled in the TARDIS in the 3 Doctors they really are not real comapnions unlike Sarah Jane Smith and the non UNIT personal.
Rose is the best companion!
ROLFLMAO sorry dear, she doesnt even come close, not compared to who else was out there!
What is your definition of companion? In Classic Who, they were called the Doctor's assistants and the term only applied to those who travelled in the TARDIS with the Doctor. Clara Oswald was never referred to as a companion, except by Madame Vastra by mistake in The Name of the Doctor and in front of River Song (who gave her a dirty look). The Eleventh Doctor referred to Clara as his "associate", which was repeated by the Daleks in The Witch's Familiar.
Where do you get that about Classic Who? Why then are Liz and the UNIT crew (namely the Brigadier) considered companions?
The definition of companion has never been because of it's use in the show. That term is rarely used. It's really just a term used by viewers. Just like labelling the Doctors by number; you don't have characters constantly referring to each Doctor by their specific number.
only in the 3rd doctors run were they called assistants becaus ethey were exactly that his ASSISTANTS at UNIT and UNIT agents, the rest were companions going all the way back to 1st and his granddaughter!
You know what, Sarah-jane Smith had a point, the Doctors companions have gotten younger! Although I would also like to see Jethro as a companion, he's smart, funny and brave, he would be good!
Rose Tyler and Amy Pond were my faves.
Thank you
Nice cross-fading of the appropriate era theme song.
Thanks :)
2:10 RIP Nicolas Courtney.
😔😢
I wonder what it would be like if the Day of the Doctor in the 10th Doctor timestream before the stolen planet could have well Donna Noble with the 10th Doctor along with joking with the 11th Doctor's look?
That would be interesting, but I'm glad the 10th Doctor came from in between The Waters of Mars and The End of Time.
Sally Sparrow?... :(
She never traveled in the tardis
annette .muse Shes called the "Companion that Never was" since shes been in the TARDIS and used it to send it back, But the Doctor did not know her when they first encountered.
+annette .muse Astrid Peth never travelled in the TARDIS either, yet she's in the video
Aren't the dates for the Brigadier and Benton off, or are you only counting when they were regulars on the series? the Brig appeared in Web of Fear and they were both in Invasion
Yeah, just as regulars - although in hindsight I should have added 1968 for them both!
You seem to have forgotten that school reunion exists.
Six Daleks
Two Weeping Angels
Two Cybermen
Plus
Davros and The Master
Disliked this video
And the great intelligence
They aren't companions though. A companion is someone who has travelled with the Doctor in the TARDIS at least once. They have not.
How are they companions?
Uh, they don't count.
Cheer it just me being a geek, you doing an amazing job just remember 5 eperson Kararine , 8 sarah kingdom plus some good companion cronicals such as home trues, drown land and some other
Thanks! And I'll remember that if I remake this vid in the future, and I may add in some of the expanded material as well
a few corrections:
Katarina was in two stories, and those two stories do total at 16 episodes, but Katarina was only in 5 episodes. Her first appearance is the final ep of MythMakers, then she dies in ep 4 of Daleks MasterPlan. This makes her the most short-lived classic companion (depending on how you define 'companion' and 'classic')
Sara Kingdom was in 9 of the 12 eps of Daleks MasterPlan, making her the second most short-lived classic companion
I love Brigadier, Benton, and yates, but they are not companions imo.
The brig appeared twice in 1968, in Web of Fear and The Invasion(which also had Benton)
Sarah Jane started in 1973, not 74
craig owens, astrid, Jackson lake, Wilfred, and all those folks from 2009 are guest stars, not companions imo.
I wouldn't call river song or adam Mitchell companions either.
The paternoster gang are not companions by any stretch of the imagination
zyg9 I have been corrected on these points before...perhaps I should rename it to every Doctor Who assistant or something like that, since companion is such a loose term. However, I have to disagree with you that the Brig is not a companion - having been in the amount of episodes he has, and meeting 6 of the Doctors on television, he's played a pretty vital role to the show, and I'm not sure what other term you could use for a character of such importance
Merganman4 'assistant' is probably just as loose a term, and I think many regard it as a synonym of 'companion', so I don't think you should change the vid's name.
As for whether the Brig is a companion, its certainly something I'm on the fence about and I'm not entirely certain why I lean towards saying he's not a companion. My first instinct is to say its because he didn't travel with the doctor, but that would rule out liz shaw and she's all companion. Perhaps its because the Doctor is generally in charge of the companion, he is their leader, they defer to him, they are somewhat subservient to him - and none of this is true of the brig. As for 'what other term you could use for a character of such importance', I see no need to apply a term to the character - he's just the Brigadier, the doctor's friend. Having no term applied to him makes him no less vital and important.
To me, a companion must first and foremost be a regular (not simply recurring), principal cast member - which is why I ruled out most of the aforementioned folks in my previous comment. However, this might rule out k9 because he was frequently written out due to technical problems with the k9 prop - and I definitely consider k9 a full companion.
Sometimes I consider there to be primary / full-fledged companions, then there are secondary / part-time companions (river, brig), then there are tertiary / guest / stand-in companions (craig, paternoster gang, Jackson lake, astrid, wilf, Benton, yates, Adelaide, Christina). This of course opens a new can of worms with determining your subjective reasons for who's primary, secondary, or tertiary. IMO: Cap'n jack, sara kingdom, and mickey are probably primary but maybe secondary. Adam Mitchell, grace, and chang lee are prob secondary maybe tertiary. Kamelion is prob tertiary maybe secondary.
I quite like your reasoning here, it's a very clear explanation. Lets just say this video compiles all the characters who could be considered a companion of some sort, whether primary, secondary, or tertiary.
Merganman4 fair enough, but I really wish I hadn't said anything about primarysecondarytertiary companions. (and note I did say I only *sometimes* view it that way.) To me, tertiary companions are not companions at all, sorta like how a dwarf planet is somehow not a planet (I still love you, pluto!), so its very jarring to see them lumped in with the full-fledged companions. It just feels wrong to me and I don't like it.
Perhaps if you ever redo this vid, you could start with the full-fledged companions in chronological order, then at the end you could list the Doctor's other friends / minor/lesser/guest/debatable companions / honorable mentions, probably in order of how much they 'count' as companions. I'll be happy to type out my own such subjective list if youre interested
That sounds like a good idea. I think if I did the debatable companions I might just do it in chronological order of appearance, though - but I'd still be happy to see your list!
I think you missed that Jamie was in the 6th doctor's in 1985. Plus one episode in the 5 doctors.
That's entirely possible. I unfortunately wasn't the most thorough in my research back in the day!
