Being a lost sheep, wandering the desert for years and looking for my shepherd, last Sunday, I experienced the Divine Liturgy for the first time. After that, when I was at home and I was reliving it in my memory, suddenly the whole experience got transformed into its essence, I heard the choir, smelled the incense and experienced it with even more Glory. It was like the Heavens opened up and I heard the Angels sing and an overwhelming love embraced me. It was so beautiful and pure. I cried for hours, I was overcome with joy and sadness. Now the memory has faded and the intense emotions have subsided. The clarity is gone but one thing remains, I’m sure the Orthodox Church is as real as it gets and Divine Liturgy is called Divine for a reason. It took the better part of a day for that realization to sink in but when it did, it was amazing! It took a nights sleep to be able to function again. I don't even know who Essence of Thought is. heh. One thing I absolutely detest about fellow Athiests on the internet, is a lot of them believe they're absolutely superior to anyone who has any shred of faith in any form of higher power. I think if they realized that people follow Religion for a multitude of reasons other than in armored skeptic's words "Wanting to believe in a mystical sky daddy", they'd be better off.
I know, it's definitely a interesting stance since I myself am an Athiest. Sadly I used to be like that as well though. Thankfully I adopted a better look at life.
I am Orthodox so I get to say this. I love that this video in entitled "A Brief Description" and it is nearly 14 minutes long, rather than 2 or 3. That is soooo Orthodox. For instance, during our evening service called Great Vespers, the priest at one point says, "Let us complete our evening prayer to the Lord". One might think the service is almost over...nope, at least 20 more minutes. It has been said, if the Orthodox think something is worth doing, we will find a way to make it take longer. But why not?! We want as much of God as we can get!!
As a catechumen I cannot tell you how helpful I find these short videos that succinctly put some very complicated ideas. Thank you and God be with you. ☦️🙏☦️
I'm blessed I found this video. I was raised pentecostal as a child then lost my way. Now in adulthood I had the calling from God and the Orthodox ways are what I always envisioned.

The word 'love' is empty of itself, and it aught to be filled with what is removed from our ego. This is why we fast and pray. Without the self-sacrificiality (if that may be a word for now) our definition of love can easily slide into what it exactly is not. But this form of love is what the Lord Christ showed us, not only on the cross, but also in the desert and in the hades.
@@WittyComm3nter Those things are tools to remember and grow in love. They can lead to phariseeism if done wrongly or for the wrong reasons though. If they arent making you grow in love, then theyre a fruitless endeavor
I am not of the Orthodox faith, have been given some brief points of discussion through a tour through an Orthodox church. It is funny that many Christians and non- Christians hear many of these words in their own circles and assume we are saying the same thing. I really appreciate that this video broke down each point giving clear definitions and examples for each topic! Great informative video:-)

oh hey, they actually use the legit versions of angels (with multiple and bizarre other-worldly features) and not the cliche winged humanoid version most Christians associate with. That's actually fascinating.
Orthodox icons depict angels as humans, more or less, with wings. I've never seen an icon depict an angel in another way, but then again I haven't seen every icon ever painted, obviously.
I am currently living in my university's dorm room and I have set up such a beautiful icons corner. I also have the Cross, an oil candle that I light whenever I pray and an incense little tray-like that goes above my candle so I can smokelessly light up the incense. Not to forget my paryer rope and my praying books, along with the akathists of my dearest Saints 😊
I am catholic and i love your videos. Kerp on doing a good work. And keep on spreading the ortodox faith. Love you God bless you your channel. And your work amen.
Beautifully put together, I agree with 100%, this is my life what I have always been taught, and I know it is truth. Sometimes I need a refresher course. Like now, how not to fall into despair because a family member has been stricken ill through no fault of anyone 😔
It depends whether you ask laypeople or theologians. :-) I suppose laypeople don't generally go into specifics of why Christ died, except that He died for us and that we might be saved. Theologians in general are all for Christus Victor, and it is most evident during the hymns of paschal (Easter) cycle; I suggest reading Paschal Canon to see it (one example: ruclips.net/video/ZyiSONZLZ4U/видео.html, translation within video). Orthodox never had penal substitution, and any shreds of it one may find in Orthodox writings are purely a Western influence.
Brady - I would add that while some Orthodox really concentrate on the Christus Victor analogy, the same way that most in the West really concentrate on the Penal Substitution model, it is also true that many Orthodox, including noted theologians, take a more inclusive view. We absolutely hold to the Christus Victor metaphor, and we also hold to a large number of other metaphors mentioned in Scripture as well. We don't see them as mutually exclusive, but rather mutually inclusive. A good example of this can be seen by His Eminence, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware's lecture here: ruclips.net/video/3F7h-TStNd8/видео.html - after the intro & applause, he starts speaking at 6:44. It's a little like listening to a lecture by Gandolf... :) Hopefully you will enjoy the experience. May God bless your journey.
And I understand why. I share that concern, but it is simply one of a number of analogies. H.E. Met. Kallistos gives about an hour long lecture. It's entertaining and thought provoking, but not intended to be brief, so you need to set aside an hour (or longer if like me you rewind and take notes). He outlines 4 tests for each of the analogies to measure their usefulness, and Penal Substitution certainly fails some of those tests. What I like about his approach is that it does not throw out models (which have their basis in scripture, which Penal Substitution also does have), but his 4 tests help us to understand them better based on their usefulness and pitfalls. An example of other analogies to the mystery of salvation besides XC NIKA and Penal Substitution is Christ the Great Physician, sometimes called the "Hospital" model. In a nutshell, many Orthodox do not take an either/or view of these analogies, but see them all as being useful in grasping the unfathomable mystery of our salvation in Christ. The "test questions" are as follows: 1) Does the model envisage a change in God or in us? 2) Does the model separate Christ from the Father? 3) does the model isolate the Cross from the incarnation and resurrection? 4) Does the model presuppose an objective or a subjective understanding of Christ's work? From these it becomes clear that models failing one or more of these tests is to be understood as a weaker analogy. It is also important that we never take any metaphor as a mechanical method of salvation. Analogies must always be remembered to be analogies and nothing more. All these models must be understood metaphorically, some having greater merit than others.

I'm not an orthodox christian but love of Christ has entered my heart. May the lord guide me. Thank you for the video.
Glad you liked it, Reza! :-)
I started laughing at this. I am Orthodox also. 😂❤🙏
I am a Romanian sceptic baptised orthodox and culturally a Christian. Some 30 minutes I have also become your subscriber. Hugs from Bucharest!

As a catechumen I cannot tell you how helpful I find these short videos that succinctly put some very complicated ideas. Thank you and God be with you. ☦️🙏☦️
Thank you so much Marlena!
It feels like home not gonna lie . While we are getting attacked in my home country for being christians this is a great help hearing my brothers
Amazing as always.. well done! God bless you brother in Christ☦🙏🏼
Andrew Michaelides Thanks, brother! :D
I'm blessed I found this video. I was raised pentecostal as a child then lost my way. Now in adulthood I had the calling from God and the Orthodox ways are what I always envisioned.

ASURA DUDE You’re welcome at the Orthodox Churches if you believe as we do, Brother. Talk with a local priest. There are some differences, but nothing that can’t be overcome with a little understanding.

I may be late (by… a few years) but I’m using these videos to help teach my children the Faith
In Greece we usually start our day with a simple phrase, while we perform the cross with the three fingers: Holy is the Father, Holy is the powerful, Holy is the immortal, have mercy on us.
Amen! I love that prayer!

It's true! :-)

I am Roman Catholic, my partner is Serbian Orthodox. We both partake, participate & acknowledge each other’s Holy days (feast days, slava’s, Christmas, Easter, fasting periods) Although we are aware of the difference between our two church’s, we embrace the similarities and strive to be better, Holier people together and encourage each other positively in our efforts to become closer to God and the church❤️
So nice to hear! :-)
I'm a Protestant and I'm amazed at your presentation, my brother. I've learned many things more precisely. We are all one in Christ.

I’ve been thinking of converting to Orthodoxy from Protestantism. I’m now set on starting my process of becoming an Orthodox Christian after watching this video. Thank you!😁

Now that I’ve been received into the Church, I came back to this video. A few weeks before I started coming to an Orthodox Church I was watching these videos. This channel is one of the things instrumental in my conversion to Orthodoxy.
Just remember that love is greater than prayer and fasting.
WiseMan in my opinion love includes those things but I see your point
Precisely!
Amen!
I'm catholic but I love my Orthodox Christian brothers! ❤

As we are now in the most chaotic time in catholic history, it is like a spring to hear about what our brother Orthodox Christians are doing. Thank you for the explanation.
So grateful you mentioned abortion. Woman in church (Orthodox) & I got in a toe to toe about the works of Planned Parenthood. I couldn't believe she was praising their work and then defending abortion. So yes...also to agree with you...we're all still sinners - including me.
I can't believe someone would support that, especially in the Orthodox Church! So weird!
Honestly, this is one of the best explanations of Orthodoxy I've ever seen, and I've watched a ton. Bravo! ☦️🖤👏

I stepped into an Orthodox Church for the first time this week. I went to Vespers twice and talked to the Priest after. Although I felt a bit awkward because I am not familiar with Orthodoxly I absolutely knew I was in the right place and I plan to keep going. I have been listening to you tube and reading online much of the day, trying to understand more about Orthodoxy.
This video is outstanding! I learned quite a bit from it and I am feeling even more drawn in to Church lol. Thank you!
PS: great job with the artwork also

oh hey, they actually use the legit versions of angels (with multiple and bizarre other-worldly features) and not the cliche winged humanoid version most Christians associate with.
That's actually fascinating.
Hah thanks! I love how weird some angels look!
Orthodox icons depict angels as humans, more or less, with wings. I've never seen an icon depict an angel in another way, but then again I haven't seen every icon ever painted, obviously.
@@roytofilovski9530 Cherubim and seraphim...

Beautifully put together, I agree with 100%, this is my life what I have always been taught, and I know it is truth. Sometimes I need a refresher course. Like now, how not to fall into despair because a family member has been stricken ill through no fault of anyone 😔
Im glad that i'm a orthodox christian! Love from Macedonia!
The view of the atonement you seem to hold to is the Christus Victor. Is this common for Orthodox Christians to hold to this view of the atonement?
It depends whether you ask laypeople or theologians. :-)
I suppose laypeople don't generally go into specifics of why Christ died, except that He died for us and that we might be saved.
Always!
I will check out the clip later on, but I have a serious beef with penal substitution :-)
The "test questions" are as follows:
1) Does the model envisage a change in God or in us?
2) Does the model separate Christ from the Father?
3) does the model isolate the Cross from the incarnation and resurrection?
4) Does the model presuppose an objective or a subjective understanding of Christ's work?
From these it becomes clear that models failing one or more of these tests is to be understood as a weaker analogy. It is also important that we never take any metaphor as a mechanical method of salvation. Analogies must always be remembered to be analogies and nothing more. All these models must be understood metaphorically, some having greater merit than others.
