19:03 I've had Synology Photos take up insane amounts of space on my iPhone to sync "all of my iCloud" photos. It's even forced my iPhone into an endless boot loop (that requires a forced factory reset) because of the Synology Photos app - this has happened to my iPhones that have the app multiple times this year. still been almost a full year & i've been unable to fully backup my 1.8TB of photos/videos from my iCloud via my iPhone to Synology Photos
I have been using Time Machine to Syno NAS for years (since DSM 6 days). Bonjour service broadcast is especially useful for porable Macs, as the Time Machine target can be (re-)discovered automatically, e.g. when returning home, without any user interaction. Is there a reason why _data checksum_ was not enabled when creating the shared folder for Time Machine? My major gripe: many Synology macOS desktop utilities, incl. ABB Client and Drive Client, still have no native Apple Silicon support. Which is all the more surprising, as Synology's desktop apps are based on cross-platform development environments like Electron or Qt, where (slight over-simplification) architecture support is pretty much just a build setting. Ergo: it would be great if native Apple Silicon support could be added to the respective desktop utilities. As well as if the Drive Client menu bar icon could be updated to actually adhere to macOS's menu bar icon design guidelines.
Great info, but a backup is nothing if you haven’t done a restore test successfully. Please create a video on ABB that includes file or even better a full system restore.
No thanks , I’m stuck with dsm 7.2.1. I use heic and hevc format . Synology drop support of hevc and heic with dsm 7.2.2. Leave us alone and keep the codec. How expensive is that codec to start with ? I paid for a full solution and I bought a synology because of the software , not the hardware and you are dropping the ball. Qnap, Ugreen with Truenas or unraid are interesting now
Whoops, years ago I set the encryption option for my time machine destination. Not had any problems with it though in DSM6 Synology Photos does it offer the same features as iOS photos? Facial recognition, viewing by location, auto slideshow and short clip memories etc?
I've used Synology with the DS Audio and iTunes (Apple Music) for some time now. But lately I have problems streaming music to my Apple TV. I can only do it via DNLA. It is not via the Apple Ecosystem. What is the best way?
SMB performance from my M1 Macbook to my Synology NAS is ass. Has been since day one. Windows machines have no issue. Support wasn't much help. Maybe they can focus on it as it's "the primary filesharing protocol".
Using MacOS and Windows I am convinced that this problem is 100% apple. But then, there are issues with filehandling on MacOS that have remained outstanding since Snow Leopard.
After several attempts, I'm done trying to use my NAS as a Timemachine store. It appears to work for a time, then invariably deteriorates, and I have to stop using it.
damn. what happens? I just set it up. do you use time machine encryption? what network protocol are you using to connect to the nas? is the shared folder on synology encrypted? I was happy how easily I got this working a few days ago. Was not envisioning TM backups deteriorating. 😳
Just curious what you mean? I’ve been using synology for years and don’t recall anything getting removed, at least not that I was using. So I’m curious what they removed that you used?
@@Steve-qn8gnThey would suddenly remove a certain app or feature then you have to dig hard to find alternative when the replacement is not as good. Video Station is gone suddenly for instance. Photo Station that I’ve been using for years was suddenly killed and the replacement Synology Photos is comparatively speaking a pain to configure.
The search function is awful as a Mac user. Apart from ridiculously slow speed, the NAS only wants DOS legal file and folder names. This is so out of date, many of you Apple folk will have to idea what this means. It’s not good. Ever use a “/“? Not acceptable for the NAS
Don't buy a synology nas they take away functionality after a while. just build your own. so you own it yourself. and yes you can choose to not update the nas but than its not safe... is synology going backrupt or something? why the enshittification... my next Nas/server won't be a synology thats for sure.
THIS is exactly the content I would love to keep seeing please!
What about ( H.265 ) will it be re-supported ?

That's disappointing then. Maybe good idea to switch to a Mac mini + ssd external drive + drive as an alternative? What do you think?

this is great , very simple .. keep them coming
as a mac user great and much needed video and explanations
I want play this HEVC video thru DS Video with NAS on DSM 7.2.2. How can i do that? ;-)
Any new model should come with thunderbolt and 10Gbe port standard now if synology want to keep premium home user status.
I’ve had lots of issues using SMB with MacOS and my Synology NAS. Would often disconnect and take ages to reconnect. AFP works without issues for me.
What is the Synology and MacOs version? No more problems since synology 7.1 and not too old MacOs
@ MacOS 14 and DSM is on latest. Maybe it has been resolved now but don’t want to bother with changing it back again.
@@Htbaa No problem on my side but eventually, files names not supported by smb (space before or after le name by ex)
You didn't talk about how to transfer photos from iCloud into Synology without losing meta data.

Does Synology Photos have a duplicate feature?

CS406 works ootb with PM6100 MacOS 7.5.5. and AFP. Thx guys!
Can someone link a video where they are explaining the steps
nice vid
Thank you. Extremely timely for me.
But when are you going to release a new DS with 10 gbe and a modern processor which is capable of transcoding? THAT is what your customers want.
You don't support Apple file formats. Next NAS will not be Synology
I feel the same
This video would be vastly more useful if you bothered to provide a table of contents/time-code for the sections.
Synology Photos for iPhone app constantly stops backup up. I need to open it from time to time to force it to continue.
Android works better.
Lack of ds file thumbnails with video station removed stinks…
Please slow down.
I prever a little bit slower talking.
Video Station gone today, Synology Photos gone tomorrow…
Harry is you?
