That's one interpretation I've heard. Another ... remember she only gets on the boat once, at the end. She does go to the rier that divides the living from the dead to seek her dead mother's blessing. And perhaps the answer she gets from her mom isn't what she wanted to hear. Then you hear the girlfriends in the yard playing and laughing, just before Diana goes into her yodeling, which is her crying inconsolably. Ultimately she decides she can't bear an unhappy marriage and whatever her mom told her so she gets into the boat to cross the river to the dead (essentially choosing death rather than her fate).
Hard to believe she was only 14 in this video. She will be 18 this month and her voice keeps improving and getting stronger. I think that she is the best female vocalist in the world.
