Johnny Cash's daughter said to him after hearing this song "It sounds like you're saying goodbye". Johnny Cash replied "I am." Within 6 moths, he passed away.
The part where the song speeds up toward the end is how fast life seems to pass by as you get older. This song is powerful at any age, but will hit different as you age.
@86crud Im so sorry to hear of your loss. I pray for you and hope you can find comfort. I was an alcoholic and addict. I know the struggle. Its hard to understand unless you've been there. The power of addiction is the hardest thing you can ever overcome. You dont even realize the hurt you bring to family and others and unfortunately you tend to hurt those who love you the most. Just know that deep down she did love you and care for you. As a parent myself its your worst nightmare. I wish you comfort and a way to find the light that is in the darkness.
The original Nine Inch Nails version was about drug addiction rather than looking back on your life, so it's very understandable how you connect this song to your daughter. Sorry about your loss.
This song is one of the most sincere expressions of regret I have ever come across. I'm sorry for what happened with your daughter. I'm an addict to. Sometimes the worst thing is not knowing if anyone loves you anymore. God, life is complicated and painful. I wish you the best.
Johnny Cash was known as the "Man in Black" and was a famous singer mostly known for his country music (though he occasionally like in this song sang other genres) and his helping the common man and doing such things as performing at various prisons. I couldn't even begin to list all of his hits. As for this song, it was originally written by Trent Reznor and was a hit in the 90's for his band "Nine Inch Nails". This became Johnny Cash's last song. A few months later he and the lady in this video (his wife) died, her first, him within a few months. He sings it at a slower pace then Reznor did. People liked this video so much and Cash's version of the song that Reznor basically said that this is Johnny Cash's song now.
Fantastic reaction, thank you. Johnny was a natural story teller, and he sang a lot of funny songs, you should go deeper, it's worth it. His fans (of 60+ years), hated to see him go, but he certainly went out with style... Way to go, Sue.
I don't recall whom, but someone said something to the effect of, "Reznor sang the song as if it were a suicide note; Cash sang it as if it were a deathbed confession."
Notice how he looks to the left when remembering the past. In movies the protagonists usually go from left to right to show progress. Him looking to the left is like him going back and reflecting on the past.
Johnny Cash was everywhere when I was a kid. There was no music but country music in my life then and Johnny Cash was in my young mind the undeniable king of country music. Now he's gone and I'm sixty and when be closes that piano I ugly cry every time.
Don't know if you know this, but Johnny is the only artist that is in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, country music Hall of Fane and Songwriters Hall of Fame!!!!!!!!!
i know i am late in this comment by a year but...Welcome to the Power of Johnny Cash. This song for me makes me remember all the good and bad times in my life and all the bad choices i made especially. It gives me the courage to live a better life for me and my family for the remainder of my time on this planet. The tears are cleansing to your soul when listening to this song. And they show the path towards a brighter future if you allow them to flow freely. They take the weight off your shoulders and chest for a few minutes so that you might find clarity of mind and spirit. God Bless Johnny Cash, and you Starr and to anyone who reads this comment in the years to come.
This song was originally performed by Nine Inch Nails, a heavy metal rock band. Johnny Cash was an American country singer who decided to perform this cover. The scenes you see in the video are scenes from his life and a basic summary of how even in the end, we all face death. Johnny Cash struggled with addiction his whole life and this song was a tribute to his life of struggle but also a goodbye. When his daughter heard this song before it was released, she told him, “Daddy, it sounds like you’re saying goodbye.” And he replied, “I am baby, I am saying goodbye.” He passed away shortly after this song was released. This is his final song and a testament that such a legendary man could still evoke emotion even at the end.

It's funny how certain things when we're younger. Seem to mean so much to us. And it's not until we get older that we realize what truly matters. Not material things but who was in your life.
It happened to me that i listened this song first time from NIN first time at my 15 years old, and years later at 17 i listened Johnny's version and i found it cool. Now, i'm almost 40, and it hitted different.
My favourite story about this is that Cash approached Trent Reznor to cover it and after he agreed, making only a couple of lyrical changes (crown of thorns rather than crown of shit). When Reznor heard Cash’s version he said that Cash had made it is own now, and said he could never play it again. On a side note, a few of the regular NiN artists helped direct the video.
I'm so sorry that seemed to have hit you out of nowhere. It's what happened to me the first time. & doesn't get any easier revisiting it. One of the most powerful songs ever recorded.
Listen to more and more Johnny. Even though he didn’t write this song, he tells a story with every song he does. Start way back and listen to them all. Cash was one of the greatest.
Thank you very much for your empathetic reaction to this song Larh! Actually, you're not of the right age to feel this song the way it should be understood from the artist's point of view! Thank you very much for your great empathy! By being able to feel it, you are truly a very very special person! All the best for your future Stefan

Johnny Cash sining “Hurt” is so impactful . It seems to be a story of his life and his death. It hits me so deep every time I see this video . The visuals are so meaningful as to emphasize the very words of the song with his life . God bless Johnny

I imagine that if I heard this song first when I was young, I would have appreciated its honesty, and seen it as a warning against drug use. But now, at 74, after having lived a life of mostly soaring highs and victories, what holds my thoughts now is the failures and missed opportunities. Specifically, I realized only 3 years ago that I have Asperger's syndrome, fairly mild, but that's like being mildly pregnant. Now I understand my failures, mostly interpersonal, and wonder "What if?" Regret is what I feel most. Regret. That's what the song is expressing. It's too late for me, and for Johnny, but not for those on the other end of the pipeline. Young people REALLY need to believe us old folks -- I've been here for 74 years, but I was 32 when I went to bed last night. I'm serious. Time perception is truly deceiving. We compare the time ahead to what's already passed. At age 9, eternity is nine years, so 65 more is an infinity of infinities. At 60, sixty is eternity, and 10 more is nothing. Time really does accelerate as we get older. That's not a trite cliché. So DON'T WASTE A MOMENT! Specifically, don't throw time away by lying wasted on someone's floor all night, or by smoking -- that chops off the last 12 years allotted to you, and fouls the 12 preceding that. Don't take the easy path of immediate gain. It doesn't stick. Build something useful, good and worthwhile. Don't waste time fighting with your life partner. She's your partner, not your enemy. I love how Starr listened to the whole song without stopping. It was a beautiful reaction to see how deeply this song is felt.
Her emotional reaction gives me hope because if there are enough people like her, this world might have a chance.
When Johnny closed the piano, it was like he was closing his own casket. This song hits hard every time I hear it.

The last time he ever touched a piano I'm told.😢

one little thing, Trent said that not cause people loved that video, he said it when he watched video for first time
Trent Reznor said about this song after hearing this version of 'his' song "This is no longer my song. It's belongs to you."
And the "Man In Black" was a protest against the Vietnam war. He wore black for that, and has a song about it.
