    Best explanation I have heard for this tremendous problem with Porsche's. Your point by point views and detail made it perfectly understood. Your taking apart the old AOS broken part was brilliant brother. You are a great teacher. Finally....someone who speaks English perfectly, without all the distractions & noise others have when making a DIY video. My compliments to your vision & implementation.

    A friend helped me change mine out as a precaution at 65k miles cause this is a known failure point. I'll prob change it again in another 65k. Good to see you fixed it on your own. Honest repair shops are hard to come by.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      That's great your friend will switch it out for you. It is very rewarding to KNOW you can do it yourself. After I did it, I know I can do it pretty quickly now. Maybe an hour or less? They go bad often but then I noticed it went bad only after I downshifted too hard.

    Thanks for this! I enjoy all your Boxster DIY videos! I just bought a Cayman which is very similar and although I don't have this particular problem I will know exactly what it is if I start to get the white smoke. Your brake pad video really helped because my rear pads need replacing and i would have brought it dealer and been ripped off if I hadn't watched your video and seen how incredibly easy it is to do yourself. So thanks again and keep the Boxster DIY videos coming!

      +Gary P Oooh Cayman rocks. If its the current year, much more power, no annoying plastic window to yellow, same great balanced mid-engine, the 0 to 1kRPM low end notes at the start just brings a smile every time. =D Yeah, I do the Boxster ones as I go, I figure I might run out of things to show one day. We'll see. =D

    I have a 2003 Box and I love it! The dealership can get expensive and I am lucky to have found a shop that specializes in vw, Audi, bmw, porsche & Mercedes etc. They are less expensive and do great work. I try to do as much as I can myself, and when I get in over my head I give it to those guys. No matter what you do it will cost more than the average car to maintain. Thanks for the video

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      Agree with you on that one. Tires are expensive too. But what can you do if you really like the car right? All you can do is minimize your costs by doing all the work on the car yourself as feasible.

      +BeatTheBush you got that right. I just bought new summer tires, Hankook ventus v12 evo2 on oem 17" wheels for about $450 with shipping. check it out on tire rack. tires dont seem to last long though, i recommend an alignment when ever you get new tires. it helps. since you cant rotate the tires like vehicles with matching sizes front & back.

      +Bishop Cherry Coke For 2 or 4 of them? I cant bring myself to get summer tires since I have to switch them in and out. I just use Yokohama Advan S4 all year round at $500ish a pair.

    Great vid!!! First vid I found on how to do this in depth. My 2000 boxster is smoking on start up for a bit. I'm sure the AoS is going out but was hesitant to change it myself. Your vid is very clear and informative. Thanks for taking the time to make the vid. I hear that "blue" plastic tool is a great idea. They sell it on pelican parts for about $2 but it's worth it's weight in gold! Those clamps can be a pain and tough to reach! I'll be looking for more Porsche Boxster vids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Thanks much for your comment. I had to get in there about 4 times because the flexible short hose wasn't seated properly and was leaking about half a quarter quart a week! After the experience, I actually now think you don't really need the blue clip because I can get to it just as easily with some wide jaw pliers. Look what you did. Thanks to yours and other comments, I'll have another Boxster Vid next Thursday. =D

    I finally replaced mine. I also replaced the AOS plastic hose on top and the rubber vacuum hose on the plastic hose (both cracked) and now zero smoke. Car does feel smooth like brand new. I did an oil/filter change, air and cabin filters. I kind of miss the old rough feeling it had before fixing it...haha spark plugs are next. I even learned how to use a torque wrench and bunch of other tools. Thanks ebay and autoparts store. I believe I can do pretty much all maintenance on this car now. It did take me like 4hrs of the AOS and 1hr for oil change. Now that I know ho, maybe take half the time or less. Thanks for your videos.

    Great video! I'm about to do the AOS replacement this weekend. I purchased the pre-tensioned hose clamp not even knowing all you had to do was position it and pull the blue portion off. LOL!! Positive feedback - I appreciate giving an explanation as to the part and surrounding parts functions. Watching your video really gives you the orientation of the part and location. Keep up the great work.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      +motach I've since been a little skeptical about the clamp because when you pull it, I fear it might snap back too fast and crack the rubber hose under. I'm thinking I would rather just use a pair of wide jaw pliers and slowly tighten. It was actually not too hard for me to open and close the hose clamp manually even without the special tool. Next time...

    informative , dont have a Porsche but find it interesting to watch as I used to work on my cars. You brought up many factors regarding removal, etc.

    Good video BeatTheBush. I had to replace it on my 2003 Boxster 6 years ago and it failed again this week. Scaring think when you see that much smoke coming out of the exhaust. I had to do it in my BMX X5 as well.
    I will try aviation PRC sealant to fix the diaphragm and seal back the plastic cap in place. Will post later.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      Dixon Gutierrez Hey... what's going on here. You already know how to do it, why are you watching how to do it again? I dunno about fixing the diaphragm... all this gasoline gets in there and destroys anything rubbery. If you fix one crack, another crack will appear since the whole thing is weak already. I think you can try to buy a new diaphragm only?

    • @dgtal2926
      @dgtal2926 9 лет назад

      BeatTheBush I just wanted to refresh memory. The diaphragm was actually in a very bad shape and I ordered original parts. They will arrive next week. I have a concern: I plugged both sides with cork plug just to drive back work (8 minutes drive). How much pressure is coming from the crack case? I think the plug came off the AOS. Just arriving home I had oil all over the road and there was a grinding noise coming from the engine, I shot it off like 1 minute later. The engine didn't missfired. Oil level is a little low but within marks. Will check tomorrow

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      With the cranks moving around, there going to be some positive pressure that will try to push the temp plug out of your AOS. Perhaps a rubber band to hold it in there is in order. Think the oil would just be residue from the failure, not new oil spewing out. What do you mean by 'shot it off'? As long as the oil remains within range it should have been safe.

    • @dgtal2926
      @dgtal2926 9 лет назад

      BeatTheBush turned engine off i meant. I think I have a something broken inside the engine. When engine warms up a rattle noise is coming out of that side of the engine where the AOS is and oil is leaking from somewhere. The cork plugs still there and dry. Some oil on top of the block under the intake. Time to disassemble and inspect. Thanks

    • @dgtal2926
      @dgtal2926 9 лет назад

      BeatTheBush one more thing: engine runs smooth, it is not missfiring and not check engine lamp.

My Cayman smokes white smoke on start up for about 5 mins, but then it totally stops, so I may not have the same issue but you've given me some good simple things to look into. BeatTheBush Oh yea, Didnt even occur to me---I'm rusty --not working on my cars anymore.-- shame on them and every other manufacturer who are more inclined to make a part so it cant be rebuilt or have a critical component replaced. Gone are the days of rebuilding master cylinders I suppose and brake cylinders and slave too.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад +1

      Skip Fiori Sadly, manufacturers rather turn a profit by making things not rebuild-able or last as long. At the same time, the things break sooner and ends up trashing the planet with more junk in the landfills. =(

    It seems to be a common problem on the Porsches after seeing them burn oil on here,I'd personally fit an aftermarket oil catch can & PCV valve.
    It seems to be a problem with the later model BMW's as well, the plastic PCV valves get brittle & fall apart, it's just that I'd expect more from a car which costs in the 6 figure range !

    Great video...I have a 1998 and just found out my AOS is failing...until I get it fixed in two weeks is it OK to drive, or should it sit without use until then? Apologies for the question...thanks

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад +1

      Lets see... this sounds like a terrible liability question. If I say go drive it and your car explodes, then I am to blame. AOS is a emissions device. Your engine will work without it. BUT when it does fail, your car will make so much smoke it'll cover half a block in dense cloud until you remove the vacuum hose from AOS to the intake. There could be other things wrong so driving it could damage the engine. So the official answer is: I cannot give you an official recommendation due to liability.

    • @LancetRX
      @LancetRX 8 лет назад +1

      Lol, no worries...wow. an honor to get a reply so quickly...I'll lean towards not starting or driving it until it goes to the mechanics first week of October...no smoke yet. so I'm praying it will drive to the shop...right now. it has this high pitched metal noise from the middle of the car. again thanks for replying :)

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад +1

      No prob about replying, it's what it do. =D How do you know your AOS is broken with no smoke? And this video teaches you how to change it yourself, so what are you waiting for? =D High pitched metal noise!? I wonder what is causing that. Are you sure it's AOS?

    • @LancetRX
      @LancetRX 8 лет назад

      I wish I had your expertise to fix it...my hands are for making cookies lol... a friend felt the AOS is failing because (although we can't see the smoke yet), after starting, strong fumes of oil fills the garage and inside of car. When driving next to a concrete barrier it's making a "brakes-like high pitched metal on metal" sound...and I've got 3 months "new" brakes...if im driving, in rear view mirror still don't see a plume of smoke yet, but maybe there is and it's gone after I take off...sigh...thanks again. I'll keep you posted on what the mechanics find out. :) you are the BEST

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      Yvonne Sidell Might want to roll slowly and apply the brakes while someone is outside the car to listen to the car brakes to see if it is the brakes. If it's from inside the engine then I have a different view. If the pitch changes when you rev the engine without it being in gear, it means something in the engine. I'm going to take a wild guess here which is that maybe it is the seal ring around one of the cylinders. If that fails due to wear an tear then oil can sneak up into the combustion chamber causing the smoke. Yeah, let the mechanic find out and beware of them ripping you off. Let me know if my wild guess is right.

  • @453NBW
    @453NBW 9 лет назад +1

    Is the oil milky white under the old diaphragm? If it is? This is why the diaphragm failed! And you have bigger issues with that engine headed your way! FYI: ALL engines create their highest vacuum AFTER you snap off the throttle at high rpm! :) When you come off throttle it sucks oil up into the canister, filling the canister, and pulling it past the diaphram and into the intake. Then? The next time you go back to throttle? It goes into the heads/combustion chamber. I'd like to know the part number from your old AOS. Porsche made 6-8 revisions since 1997 when they first started using this AOS. We work on 100's of Boxsters every year (since 2005) and we rarely replace more than one AOS per customer and a lot of our customers race their cars 30+ days a year!

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      Diane Wheatley Might be me abusing my car since when I feel really spiffy, I would down shift and floor it. LOL. Maybe I should do that a bit gentler. I don't know the part number since I've long discarded the broken AOS.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

    Thanks for the video. My 2007 Cayman has just started making a high pitched squealing sound when it get warm. Someone suggested it might be the AOS but you say there was no sound. I don't really have much smoke either.... The sound goes away when I accelerate but comes back when I decelerate or idle. Temp stays the same so I'm guesing and hoping it's not the water pump. Maybe serpentine belt or tensioner pully? Would appreciate any ideas from people. Thanks.

    • @BeatTheBush

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      No trick really. It was tough for me too as you don't get much leverage there. I used my right hand without looking going in from the wheel well. Just try try again.

    • @jasunjames
      @jasunjames 9 лет назад +1

      +Matthew Santos I read somewhere that Porsche altered the design on some of the later replacements and made some part larger so that may be the cause. People just replaced the hose with a larger length.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад +1

      +Matthew Santos Since this is 9 months ago, you probably got it back in already. Reading this again, I realize I'm not sure which hose you are talking about. The short 2" long hose that looks like an accordion? That is a pain indeed. Make sure to get it in right all the way around by feeling it before and after tightening or the oil can leak out of there.

    VERY Helpful video! I do I have one questions because I'm trying to troubleshoot why my Oil Vent House that connects to the other side of the crankcase. Basically on the other end it melted...Could of the AOS cause it to melt on the other end?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 лет назад +1

      I can only guess here since I've never seen that in my repairs. If it melted, it sounds pretty bad. The thing that could heat things up that much is the engine so did the engine ever get above normal levels? Or perhaps the hose is a generic brand one that does not have very good heat resistance.

    • @mrdoran1982
      @mrdoran1982 7 лет назад +1

      So, the engine did over heat twice. I ended up fixing that problem (So I think) I noticed this issue on the testing phase yesterday. I just bought this Boxster knowing the overheating problems as the old man was upfront and I really don't think he new about the leak...It set for nearly 3 years before I got it two days ago. But the end that is attached to the AOS was barely on if not on at all..by the time I could trace the hose it was totally disconnected from the AOS. I wish I could show you a picture of the other end where it melted...I just was trying to understand the reason for melting prior to purchasing another one. But it could of melted when it overheated seems likely but it did it right at the connector to the crankcase. I was just thinking maybe clog, or maybe not being connected to the aos pump caused or led it to melt..?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 лет назад

      It melted due to the over heat of course. But overheating could have damaged a lot of different things as well. Generally, once you overheat, it's very very bad news. Typically, if you see it get close, you should park on the side of the road and let it cool and do something about it or you'll get further damage.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      Not sure but from taking it apart it appears not serviceable since the pieces are held together by glue. If you decide to glue it, it'll need to be air tight. So I'm saying it's not impossible.

  • @kostik
    @kostik 8 лет назад +1

    How much of suction is normal? For me it's hard to tell if it's not too much... It sucks and I can feel it with my hand. Is this already a good reason to replace the AOS?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      When it was fixed, the suction was very faint. But if you're not getting white smoke, you're trying to do preventive maintenance? This is more of getting white smoke already but figuring out if your AOS is the culprit.

      As people say, that's pretty normal to burn off the oil. I do normally get a little bit once in a while but a lot less often than the months before the AOS broke. Thanks! I usually make more as the need comes up. I do have a cheapo disc brake I'm suppose to put it soon.

    • @BeatTheBush

      I didn't see any o-rings when I removed them. However, they might have been inserted and stuck in the clip end of the pipes. When I remove them they come off with it so you never see them loose. There really must've been some rubber somewhere to keep the seal.

      chris monaco Yes, it was like P1128/P1130. For your P1411, it refers to the Secondary Air Injection signal is implausible. It has to do with improving emissions where this systems pumps extra air into the engine on a cold start. So it could be either the hoses of this air injection might be leaking, unplugged accidentally, the electronics valves in the chain is broken, or maybe the air pump is broken and needs replacement.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 лет назад

      hmmm. check your tires are not super worn which could throw off balance and cause shaking, alignment could also do it. Look at the pulleys around the serpentine belt to make sure they are all idling without wobbling, air mass sensor could be faulty causing rough 'shaky' idling (ruclips.net/video/gx3ia_ntIEg/видео.html), faulty O2 sensor could also cause rough idling. The last two should have given you engine codes so if you don't get those, it might more be something mechanical not balanced.

      @vmaxzile 9 лет назад +1

      +Justin Martin I heard it depends if you park it on ground that's not level. I left mine for about 4 weeks on a slope when I started it it smoked a lot then cleared. Anyway they say because the engine is a flat 6 oils creeps and is normal that it smokes now and again.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  9 лет назад

      +vmaxzile 4 week is long time to leave it sitting since everything just breaks faster that way. I used to leave mine every 2 weeks and the battery keeps dying. The problems are much less frequent now that ts my everyday driver.

    • @vmaxzile
      @vmaxzile 9 лет назад

      I agree

    • @justin2024atlas
      @justin2024atlas 9 лет назад

      +BeatTheBush guilty as charged. the boxster sits (on level ground) for weeks, and in the past, for months at a time :(
      the former owner never drove it. I can only drive it 3 or 4 times a month, sometimes less.
      even with knowing this, I wonder if the smoke at start up is due to piston rings or seals not being in good shape. the smoke is concentrated & thick; white with a strong odor, but it doesn't last long. exits the exhaust pipe only at initial start up as one big puff. car seems to run well despite this, although acceleration drops off suff at high rpms, such as 5,000 and above in 2nd or 3rd gear.

    Porsche's engine intentionally puts a little oil in it's cylinders when you start it, to have them properly lubricated until the motor is heated and that's why you have the white smoke when you start it. Please don't ruin your Porsche Boxters by doing this. Go to a Porsche mechanic if you think there is a problem, otherwise this is not ok to do this to your car.
