Biggest culture shock as an Aussie visiting the UK - I was in a pub in a small village in the far north of England and a bloke standing at the bar started talking to me. I couldn't understand a word that he said! 😆

I was born in Hartlepool, NE UK, I was 10 when my parents brought us 3 kids to Australia in 1964. We had very thick Geordie accents but after going to school for a year my accent had softened and two or three years later I was talking like an Aussie. I returned to visit family in my late teens and when I arrived in Hartlepool I could hardly understand what they were saying, within a few days. My accent was back! 6 months later I arrived back in Australia and my parents took a while to understand me 😂😂

@@EatVentureVlog While serving in the Royal Australian Air Force I was based in Butterworth, Malaysia.
Under the ANZUK treaty there was a monthly rotation of Australia, New Zealand and British army at the base.
The British regiment were the Highland Fusiliers, all from Glasgow and given the choice of the army or Borstal.
I shared my room with the army cooks, so I had new friends every month. A film of the 1972 VFL Grand Final was being shown the tavern lounge.
The lads said they would buy me the drinks if I explained the game to them. There were four of them with me in the middle.
During the first half we had trouble understanding each other. Instead of the beer, they were buying me double shots of scotch whiskey.
I think I had at least 6 drinks by half time and was feeling the effects. During the third quarter I was amazed that we could understand each other perfectly.

My parents (Welsh-English) migrated to Australia in the early 1950s with my older siblings, I and another were born after they arrived as 'ten pound poms' We children are sooo thankful that our parents emigrated. We love living in Oz . We all have successful lives, professional qualifications and career and own our homes and properties. We now have the three to fourth generations of Aussies making up our extended family living in the four eastern states of Oz. We have travelled overseas and some have worked overseas but we know that Australia is the best place to live.
I live in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It has the biggest population of the cities and has over 200 ethnicities living here, bringing their food and culture for us to experience. Melbourne wraps around the huge Port Phillip Bay which opens out to Bass Strait open sea with two peninsulas on each side jutting into it. The Yarra, Maribynong and other rivers run through the city into the Bay. The greater city is surrounded by the Great Dividing Range, valleys, plains and water. Melbourne is known as the Arts, Academic, Sports and Gardens city. It has a vibrant culture. Coffee cafes are everywhere as are restaurants and other eateries. It has the most extensive tram system in the world. In the mid 1800s it was the richest city in the world due to a goldrush and lovely old buildings and infrastructure were built. There are also many modern and architecturally unique skyscrapers. Check out the huge vista of Melbourne from the sky-deck in the Eureka skyscraper.
Radiating out from Melbourne, there are many regions and places in Victoria to visit eg. The Great Ocean Road, The Otway Ranges, The Mallee and Wimmera deserts, the Macedon Ranges, the provincial cities of Ballarat and Bendigo ( part of the Golden (gold) Triangle), Gippsland with its lush, temperate rain forests, valleys lakes and many beaches (one is 90 miles long), the Great Dividing Range snow and ski resorts alpine country, the Yarra Ranges and Valley, the river districts on the Murray River border with New South Wales. There are wineries, farms, towns and National Parks everywhere. Melbourne has a four season temperate climate with temperatures ranging from low minus to high 40s C degrees. Sometimes we have four seasons in one day !
Australia is the oldest land mass in the world with the oldest living culture. The topography of the country has changed over millions of years as has the unique flora and fauna. The stars in the sky at night are brilliant in the country-side away from the light of cities and towns. Australia has about seven to eight different climate zones - tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, grassland, alpine, arid,, desert and Mediterranean. I have visited and seen most of Australia with still more to do in this vast, wonderful land. What we have is 'elbow room' compared to most other countries.
Always visit the government tourist centres to get brochures and have a chat to gain the best information of what, when and where to visit. They are in most places . Enjoy !

Hate to burst your Melbournian bubble, but Sydney is still Australia's most populous city.
      As of 2023.
Greater Sydney and Greater Melbourne, still have Sydney at 5,259,800, ahead of Melbourne at 4,976,200.
Melbourne is predicted to overtake Sydney around 2030.

"Je ne parle pas français, je suis Australien", which means "I do not speak French, I am Australian". When I ended up in Paris in my 30s, I used it and it worked perfectly. Once the French know that you are not English or American, they could not be more friendly, helpful and all of a sudden speak perfect English.

I enjoyed the muted colours, especially the many shades of green, but not the long winter 'greyness'. The 'formality' of English trees v's the chaos of the Australian eucalypts. The long summer days v the drama of an Australian sunset. The sight, sound and smell of the Pacific ocean as its breakers smash onto the beach makes is the best life tonic.

Strewth is actually centuries old, but has died out in the UK. It stands for "God's truth" and was more of a question. It basically meant "is that extraordinary thing you're telling me actually true? Are you telling me it is actually God's truth?" it has softened over the centuries and now in Australia it means "really?", or as a statement, more like "gosh!"

Sunny Coast is semi tropical - start to go west over the great divide and its so very different. Lighting Ridge is opal country, Mt Isa in gulf country and you haven't left Queensland. You have a lot to see and dont forget Tasmania which is a different level of green

Virtually unknown outside of NSW and not on the tourist track, going south from Sydney instead of north is the incredible south coast of NSW, from Wollongong down to Eden is like the north coast was before it became the popular tourists track. Definitely recommend even a day trip from Sydney to Jervis Bay or St George's Basin if you're down Sydney way. Straight down the Princess Highway after going the coast through the Gong to Kiama over the Seacliff Bridge. I see it everyday and to me it's just a bridge but others seem to enjoy the experience.

It’s the Princes Highway these days, spelt as if it is a highway named after a plural of male royals (prince) but it is actually a corruption by misspelling of the original singular possessive. It was originally named in 1920 as “Prince’s Highway”, after the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) but these days, the apostrophe is omitted. See Wikipedia. It is often misspelt (as the female royal (princess) as you did.

Glad you liked the sound of the whip bird ,..as you say Australia is huge ;if you travel south to Sydney ,give yourselves a couple of days to explore the Blue mountains ;base yourselves at Katoomba or Mount Victoria you have to see the Jamison valley [think the U.S. Grand Canyon ;but covered in trees] , it's about a kilometre walk from the main street in Katoomba[ Katoomna street ]. It is about a 2 hour drive or 2 hour train ride from Sydney terminal If possible take the train old [1970s ] double deck ultra comfortable cars [top deck left hand side for best views ].[They run about every hour or so]If you want to stay somewhere luxurious the Hydro Majestic at Medlow bath [next stop after Katoomba ]. At Echo point you have the scenic railway, the scenic skyway , the cable cars to get you into and out of the valley about a 2,000 feet drop .If lucky you will see Lyre birds that can mimic any sound , rock wallabies , platypus ,and birds galore Kookaburras, sulpher crested cockatoos , Rosellas , Mountain Lauries, etc If you are super fit you can walk the Giant staircase , but it is over 1,000 steps;I strongly recommend 2-3 days because some days you will get mist and can't see anything ;chances are the next day will be perfect . And that it just one of the spectacular locations in Australia; enjoy your time here, and don't worry ,I couldn't understand the Publican in Stoke on Trent in 1980, the accent was that thick.

Australia is basically the size of continental USA - look up Australia’s top 5 ski resorts it will blow your mind. @@EatVentureVlog If youre going to do the kimberleys, get a 4wd (long base) and drive up from perth, via kalbarri, shark bay, broome, and ningaloo. Ningaloo rivals the great barrier reef but you cant get to it off the beach.
Perth - my home city - beautiful. Dolphin watch in the mandurah estuary at its southern end (not on the boat - just walk along the footpath and you'll see them). Have drinks and lunch at the outdoor bar and restaurant platform at Pinkys beach hotel at Pinky's beach rottnest island while quokkas (tiny wallabies) hop around your feet, then swim at any of the pristine beaches - including pinkys beach - on the island (look that up too).
Be warned though - these are drives that you cant imagine. Nor can you imagine the scenery or the sunsets. There is nothing like it on the east coast. Look up Zuytdorp Cliffs and shark bay for images. shark bay is a UNESCO world heritage site as is ningaloo.

Thus you only have to worry about watching for snakes for about half of the year and you can walk in long grass in winter stress free. There are a disproportionate number of creepy crawlies the further north you get. Like people from the southern states are almost equally as shocked as people from overseas by videos of crocodile infested waters or people removing Godzilla size pythons from their ceilings up in Queensland.

Handy hints for Magpies. They attack more if you are on a bike than walking. That is because you're seen more of a threat when you are going faster around their nests. I would recommend dismounting and walking instead. Oh, if you can, please talk to them outside of mating season, which is springtime, in a calm and friendly way. They do have great memories. Hopefully, they won't consider that you're a threat and you can go about your tasks much happier. Good luck.

Loved visiting old ruins, castles etc. Really liked the old pubs that served real ale. Liked how easy it was to travel over to Europe eg 90min flight to Italy, 3 hour train trip to Paris etc. Didn’t like your fish and chips as I was so used to having a selection of fresh fish to choose from, not some scrawny bit of haddock. 🤣 Meat, fruit and veges not as fresh as you get in Australia but they were edible. 🤣

To put Australia into perspective, it is the 6th largest country in the world but it only has a population of around 26 million.
I live in Adelaide, South Australia and South Australia is bigger than Great Britain but only has a population of 2.5 million with around 90% living in Adelaide itself.
Australia is also a very flat country, the highest point is lower than some cities in Europe and North America.
Australia has rainforests, deserts and areas that resemble parts of great Britain, so there are a lot of different environments to explore.
The Australian alpine areas get more snowfall than Switzerland but Australia is the driest continent on earth.

If you want to see more stars then you believe are possible you should visit Central Australia, I worked on a sheep station in northern south Australia and found that I could read a book by starlight alone.

Aussie from Melbourne, moved to the UK in my late 20s.
The thing that got to me about London that I never really thought about back home was how much I missed being around trees, plants and animals.
Strangely, it’s the summers I find unbearable. None of the houses are built for it.

We're in South Australia and the snakes here go almost into hibernation in winter. The danger time is when they first come out anytime from mid September. October through to Christmas they're hungry and cranky. Basically, don't be in a hurry to meet any and follow sensible precautions in your local area

Tasmania. Not just Hobart. Though it is a lovely city, there is so much more to the state. Our landscape is very diverse. Mountains sea, snow, sunshine.
We say bell pepper in America. 😊
Struth - that's true. Smushed together.
When I moved from America, the thing that surprised me was the cost of medical care. So much better here.

Where I live in Brisbane, snakes are seasonal. In winter we don't see any but as soon as it comes Spring we see our resident tree snakes and carpet snake (python) around the yard. Also, I worked in the USA, northern Nevada to be exact and I was told it was considered the last frontier and all I saw in wildlife was one little brown lizard, a few crows and once I saw a wild goat at 5:00am in the dark of Winter as we were working in the mountains at a gold mine. That was the extent of the wildlife in everyday Nevada. I reckoned they'd shot everything that was wild and lived thereabouts.

The Sunshine Coast has a sub-tropical climate; long, humid spring-summer and crisp but reasonably warm autumn-winter. Places like Melbourne and Hobart are colder and less humid. Go inland past the Great Dividing Range, and it's much drier, with big variations from daytime to night-time temperatures.
As for "strewth," hardly anyone under 70 says that now unless they're a bogan 😅 And many ppl have English ancestors from the north (I had a grandparent from Bolton and great-grandparents from Leeds) so your accent isn't that unfamiliar 😊

    Speaking of language differences...
    1. One small dialect difference that usually gets overlooked is the word "grouse". As an adjective in Oz it means good, viz.; "I had a grouse time at the beach - fun, fun, fun! 😊." However, as a verb, grouse means to to complain angrily, as in the UK, viz.; "She was grousing on about some injustice, real or imagined! ☹"
    2. I have a friend from Burnley, near Manchester, and we Zoom most weeks. He sounds just like you two! Hmmm, Manchurians? 🙂

The highest number of migrants from the UK live in Perth on a proportional basis. There might be something to why this is the case... The South West of WA is incredibly nice but the feel of any place in Australia could be highly influenced by the time of year you visit, the weather and luck. Like I see some people visit some places in the middle of winter and it is raining cats and dogs or they go somewhere the week during summer that it spikes to 47 degrees and that totally frames their whole perspective on the place. Also people don't allow enough time and they bypass all of the attractions an area is known for. I notice this sometimes with people from overseas who try to get the most geographical coverage in a short period and they spend a lot of time in vehicles in transit from place to place, when they really should have just spent a lot more quality time in the well renowned tourist town/ region they drove through in 20 minutes and basically ignored on the way to a less interesting place. Find out where the Aussies like to go if they are going on a short domestic holiday away from the big cities. I would say Melbourne and Perth would be the best 2 cities to visit, but Hobart and Adelaide have their charms and the Gold Coast is also pretty self-explanatory if you are chasing the beach and hot weather. Melbourne always has a lot happening in the CBD but the centre of town in Perth goes quiet on the weekend and at night, as the city is very spread out and there are more things to do in the suburbs, the hills or especially out towards the coast - Cottesloe, Fremantle, Scarborough, Rottnest etc. This catches some tourists by surprise. I can perfectly understand your accents, as I played football with teams full of expats from all over the UK. Everyone would wear the shirts of the clubs they supported to training and there was always a good mix to promote some healthy rival banter. Glad you are here and enjoying it!

But I have one concern, I noticed you travel with your fur baby unrestrained in the car. Firstly, I think the fine in Queensland is about $2300, but secondly, and more important, god forbid you were in an accident, he would fly around in the car like a projectile. It doesn't take much imagination to work out all the possible outcomes from that scenario. It would be a tragedy to have serious harm come to him after all the effort you put in bringing over to Australia.
