I have said this before, Jamaica is a lucrative plantation available to the highest bidder! Please also don’t be fooled that even if foreign investors even higher local Jamaicans, they will get paid very little to take care of their families. Comcast, Verizon and AT&T have call centers in Jamaica, and the call center workers are being paid embarrassingly low wages. Again, Jamaica is a lucrative plantation available to the highest bidder. Jamaica is in a very sad state of affairs.

Agreed, the Jamaican government need to set and enforce a proper living wage, and make it a legal requirement for larger foreign companies to hire a majority of Jamaicans on their staff, or they should not be allowed to operate in the country

Teach, you are a true son of the soil (as the saying goes). You have raised and presented a passionate piece on government divesting Jamaica's industries and enterprises. I am sure many Jamaicans share your sentiments and national pride. I do as well. This is a broad topic that could easily be made into two or three college courses in political science to give our young people a deeper understanding of economic approaches and principles and the ideological forces that drive them. Having said that, there are some stark realities that we must contemplate when confronting the topic of divestment and nationalization.
Essentially, privatization is government selling (divestment) a country's industries and enterprises to private owners (investors); whereas nationalization is the reverse ....the acquisition of a country's industries and enterprises and run by the government. Both these economic approaches have their advantages and disadvantages and both are in ways tied to political ideologies.
[* I claim no authority on the subject although I once taught an undergraduate course in POLITICAL ECONOMIES some years ago. However, time and space (on RUclips) restrict the depth and how much I can elaborate on this topic].
I will however make a few points: Privatization is not entirely a bad thing for economies, if for the fact that overall, private owned industries and enterprises consistently out perform state owned industries and enterprises. That in part is due to the obvious ... When someone owns something, they are more protective of it and have a deeper vested interest to go the extra mile. They have less restrictions and have more freedom to take measures to ensure growth while simultaneously safeguarding their investment. Privately owned businesses also have a faster response time when making crucial "on the spot" decisions and addressing problems that unexpectedly arise in the operation of the business... And understandably so, since the decision makers in the private sector are usually the owners, who need no external approval before making decisions.
State owned and operated industries are not entirely bad either, albeit in different ways. For instance, state owned/run businesses come with greater job security, and that to some people can mean more than even a bigger pay. Many persons from experience can attest to how difficult it is to dismiss a government worker, even in the face of incompetence. Government jobs also tend to have very good fringe benefits even for bottom level workers. In short, nationalized industries arguably hold the edge over private industries when it comes to the treatment of workers [job security] and their "bread & butter" [so to speak].
Nationalization however, has its down side as well, but the extent to which one views these things as negatives will largely depend on what one deems as important in the work field. For this discussion, let's see government as a large bureaucracy, staffed by civil servants and managers, hired or appointed by our elected officials. Similarly, nationalized industries are placed under a structure whereby management is answerable to an external power ...the elected government. And although the workers in these industries are not civil servants in the typical sense, their immediate bosses are political appointees, who more often than not are restricted by state laws and regulations in as far as policies and operational procedures are concerned. Whether hired or appointed, heads of government agencies, offices, industries, enterprises etc, have less vested interest in the profitability or sustainability of the business than their counterparts in the private sector. Some of the reasons for this, is the inescapable underlying and unspoken feeling that, "It is not mine so am not gonna make it stress me out or kill me." Or attitude that "I am only doing a job." Or the notion that "It belongs to the government and I can be fired any day." In short, there is little vested interest other than holding a title and being paid for performing a job. The exact opposite is true for for privately owned enterprises.
Another downside to government owned industries is the financial risk management aspect. Government must bear every loss incurred and in so doing they have to use taxpayers dollars to sustain any failing operation. And Air Jamaica is a classic example of this. Of the 42 years Air Jamaica was in existence it recorded 40 years of losses. That was unsustainable. Yet the government held onto it and shouldered the burden of those losses simply to safeguard a national treasure and pride. Imagine the same thing happening to not one but several government controlled industries. No economy can afford to do that without suffering dire economic consequences.
Jamaicans will continue to debate the Air Jamaica issue and other failed nationalized industries for years to come. But as rational thinkers we must ask ourselves if a private industry would take 40 years of losses out of a 42 year history. It is inconceivable.
Ps. As a side note, I do recognize there are exceptions when government and private interest go into partnerships but that is another topic for another day.

MrDport58, Thank you and I agree with you completely. Many times I read responses on RUclips that just leave me shaking my head. Partly for that reason I occasionally put in my two cents worth with the hope of raising the level of interaction. And in this particular instance I was very pleased Teach Dem raised the subject for discussion, because it's an area of Jamaica's affairs that needs to be talked about openly and honestly for better understanding.. Be blessed !

It's funny how we jamaican always talk about sell out but 90% of our people don't pay taxes think everything should be free , if we don't want jamaica to sell out invest some of the millions you got in your bank account and I will wait to see that cause we don't have it .I live in America and without the private sector American would be in trouble. So my point is we need people to invest so if you don't have any money to invest be quite and fit in were you can.

Unfortunately, Jamaica has become a satrap for its local warlords, politicians, and international investment vultures whom collectively have become its global gadflies. I wish Jamaicans would discern the differences between patriotism and nationalism and the concomitant civic responsibilities.
You need a monthly Political Table Discussion in a 60 Minutes format to highlight the blights and plights of Jamaica’s progress or the lack there of.
This is post is just a pixel of a scathing report on the Jamaican government ineptness and lack of vision. Jamaica should impose a higher taxes on those business buying into the country a use that tax money to create better government job. give the cops more pay and better training. Teachers more pay. Better health care. I personally believe that selling out some of these properties is good for the economy. Most of the new development that we jamaican all love like the highways, the redevelopment of downtown. Is due to the country selling those properties out the foreign investors.

So you would be creating employment but also damaging the self employment structure which is very big. What are your thoughts?

When negotiating contracts, labor, government, industry representatives, legal representatives, and proper research done before entering into any contracts. The fact of the matter is Jamaica government has bankrupted every sector of the economy due to poor reckless mismanagement and coupled with corruption the country has been on a downward trend since its independence not having much sustainable growth. Frankly, Jamaica don’t have much options to choose from given it present state; security being its main detriment and a overly complexed tax scheme. Just a few of the deterrents in attracting foreign investment. Though Jamaica is up for sale it would be positive to find buyers instead of cherry pickers taking that which is they think can still turn a profit.

The difference is money. The government doesn't have the money to invest into these entities to make them profitable. I don't think your assessment of the reasons for selling these entities is fair. Why not talk about some of the real challenge they face in keeping them afloat. Why not talk about the millions of dollars being lossed at the JUTC. These entities seem more like a never ending sink whole where the government dumps it's cash.
Although we would love to keep them they are a burden to the government coffers. Plus once GOJ owns it every Jamaican expects to get the service it provides as free or paying little to nothing at all. Once we hear a government entity making money we say "the government a tief we money".
I won't say there isn't corruption and things that can be done to rectify these issues preventing them from becoming profitable but all that takes money. Money we don't have.
The question should be why are local investors not buying these entities?

Teach Dem Yes we do. I can't really tell you how to run your own channel either but I wish you took a more balanced approach to talking about topics like these.
I think it would be better to state all the facts of the situation and then give your opinion. That way others can weigh the pros and cons in there mind and come to their own conclusions about the topic instead of being only given your opinion on the story.
I say this because you have a lot of reach and what you put out there can have far reaching consequences. I not saying don't put your opinion in it, but present all sides before doing so.
      Just my thoughts. ✌🏼

Wow reason, we are so in debt liquidating one's assets will create funds to pay loans, what the government is not explaining if you are a foreign owner you can bring your own employees in, my concern
the wealthy Jamaicans not buying Jamaica ( not investing in the Jamaican companies) instead of cars and lavish lifestyle, How many times have the Jamaican bauxite companies sold while the country shares get lesser, pretty soon all the lands in Jamaica will be gobbled up by Foreign Investors, beware of this word eminent domain , I won't be surprised if this will come up soon, this is way out of control .

When i saw how Richard Branson
handle Andrew I realised how little respect other countries have for our leader.
    And how weak Portia was
successive selling off of assets without a contingency plan like it becomes Jamaica property after 99 years or if you build a road you agree to have 1/3rd of the work force trained by them .
Or if you own a Hotel we have a stake and contract to supply food .
Our leaders are not frighten for us but they are frighten to fight for our country on our behalf for our future.
That's what why people want to leave here .
Land of wood and no hope .
    Sorry if I sound depressed

Young man you are too young to know of the debates about Jamaican ownership of our resources that went on in the late 60s and 70s. In the 1970s Michael Manley believed and practiced the policy of Jamaican ownership of the "commanding heights" of our economy. He was condemned and voted out and since the 80s, we have had divestment of various enterprises. The Americans and the JLP always say Government cannot manage business. Divestment is not limited to Government property in Jamaica. Private owners like: Tia Maria, Desnoes & Geddes, Red Stripe, Sagicor Hotels, Dolphin Cove, Wray & Nephew, Excelsior Buscuit, HD Hopwood etc, have all been divested to foreign companies.
