Great Video, interesting how you are viewing "large" bonsai, i understand what you mean.. I talk alot about this myself in my content, and especially with smaller bonsai, such as Shohin or Mame this is key to spend time with the trees, details comes first. Overall if we spended more times with our trees, im sure we will feel the full journey better, Bonsai to the fullest.
You are far too modest Morten. What you do with your trees is nothing short of magic.

My approach to Bonsai is very similar to yours. I really like to just watch my trees, study them closely and work on them.
I started this journey because of a sprouting Cork Bark Oak kernel that my daughter brought home 2 years ago, I really wanted to grow the Oak in a pot and that's when I found Bonsai. The tree is still alive and I have some more species to work. Still learning but loving the path!

This video was a great comfort to me, now I know I'm not the only one who can spend half an hour in silence just looking at the same tree.
Morten recently subscribed and going through your back videos, thoroughly enjoyed this and your philosophy but may I add I like big bonsai and feel they are easier to look after (maybe) but you have enthused me to look at creating Shohin with two supermarket bought Acer palmatum and Cherry tree (all three had nice trunks and nebari). May I suggest a video series of different trees from start to finish over three years i.e. Maples, Conifers, Deciduous, Pines in shohin style.
I like your approach to bonsai, I agree totally. I love to look at my pre-bonsai several times a day to make sure they are happy!

I started with Bonsai 7 to 8 years ago and at first I just looked at big trees ... now I started to enjoy shohin and Mame bonsai ... I was looking for good references and now I found it! Amazing plants and great videos!

This is a wonderful video. I have the same attitude towards my trees. What you say in the video outreaches the field of bonsai. Many of the things you say can easily be applied to other types of hobbies and life in general. Bonsai should not be only about competition. In fact, a simple joy of taking care of your trees can exists without competitions and awards. But there can be no competition and awards without the simple joy of taking care of your trees. Keep up the good work and keep making these videos.

"joy of bonsai" why we really like this art form for me it really help me to get some peace of mind with my trees i forget all the responsibilities and when i look into some of my bonsai i feel like i am still a little child who plays under a great tree with no care in life

You’ve hit the nail on the head for everything for me in this video. Firstly, I was married in Sonderborg so a strange connection as you say you live in Denmark! Also, I think this may be the first comment of 2019 so yay me, what a rock and roll lifestyle I live! Wabi Sabi is the name of a boat on the marina I live on and the owners told me it means simply “finding beauty in decay” which is something like you say about seeing something that isn’t perfect but still carries It’s own beauty. Also, creating your own trees, not being overly concerned about the big noisy trees and not buying completed trees, everything that I totally agree with. I have watched a couple of your videos and love your style of presenting, monologue, filming and the trees you have made. You have earned the follow! Happy New Year!

Kisetsu-en Bonsai Morten Albek no relations, I’m British but married there as it was easier to travel to Denmark and get married rather than to get married in Germany. I had sailed into Sonderborg and Svendborg a few years earlier too and really liked it there.

I live in Costa Rica, totally different to any of the places you mentioned. And I agree with you, our background and environment affects how you appreciate the trees. I'm young, don't have any mature or finished trees, I'm working slowly on building some pre-bonsai of not really traditional species since my weather won't allow it, and eventually I'll have some decent looking trees to pass on to future bonsai enthusiasts. I believe I have an old soul and that affects what I look for in trees. As my environment is so exuberant and green I look for two different extremes, lush and magnificent, like the trees I see around me, or exotic and reminiscent of harder drier or colder places. favoring the latter for it's easier for a novice to find maturity and a sense of completion in trees that don't need the thickest trunk or biggest branch structure to appear mature. I hope to one day be able to look back to the start of my trees and find that we journeyed through life together, finding traces of my past in every tree I keep. On the subject of buying and selling trees, I have to somewhat agree with you, in the end it's the process I most enjoy, building an understanding of the trees instead of just buying a mature specimen and keeping it in proper condition. But sometimes we forget that and run out of patience, feeling an urge to buy mature plants, essentially buying someone else's time and expertise. I'll start following you today, hoping to grow my trees with some of your own ideas on mind, trying to stay focused on growth, rather than maturity.

"There's also a Chinese way, that's a little bit older". Rather an understatement ;) There isn't a Chinese way of bonsai, there's a Japanese way of punzai (or penjing), which is at least three centuries younger.
But nit-picking aside, I really enjoy your videos and trees.
large bonsai are like bodybuilders....I tried a few large and decided I didnt like it...I like making scenes and sitting with them.....I like staring at the trunks...its like having a huge tree in front of you and you can take in the whole of the tree, which you cannot do with a true tree...that takes skill...hoping to acquire some in the coming years.

Jeg er glad for jeg er dybt forankret i zen livet og meditation, nu hvor jeg i år 2020 er startet på bonsai. Jeg er ikke gået ind i det på grund af konkurrence og alt muligt andet. For mig handler det om at jeg er meget draget af naturen og zen. Håber at måde dig en dag. Jeg kommer 2 maj på Frederiksberg.

Jo jeg synes nogen af de store bonsai er meget fantastiske, men Shohin passer bedre til mit væsen. Måske har nogen af dine videoer åbnet lidt for det i mig. Uden at kende dig, er du i hvert fald en af de bonsai erfarende, som falder bedst i min smag. Dine fantastiske træer og din tilgang til det hele, spejler jeg i mig selv. I have no stands no real pots no fanzy woodwork in my garden i only see the trees i know what i do is bonsai but for me is about growing trees and i grow them in pots so i can bring them if i move and to have room for more trees all my 250 trees are i have grown from seed or cutting, this hobby/art form is for all kind of ppl but i see 2 kind of ppl in the hobby the grower and the artist
I'm loving your videos because the content is always of the highest quality. Can I please make a request to not apply the filter you have in your videos? It makes watching it hard. It would be great to see the details of your trees but that filter gets in the way. Thanks and keep making these videos.
Hi. And thanks. I do not apply a special filter, but I work with a shallow depth of field to add the mood and intensity of the movies. I know some will dislike it, and others appreciate it. I will enhance the depth of field when it is important to see special techniques though. It will not always be perfect because I film and present at the same time. Best wishes, Morten Albek.
