Wonderful video, thank you! I’m 1 year into my bonsai journey but i seem to be moving towards more shohin / smaller sized bonsai, just because of my interest. This is very inspiring and educational. Thank you! Rich from the UK.
I love your channel. It is so beautifully produced. Would it be possible to have your text in a different area from where your hands are working? It is a shame to block your teaching with text. Thank you for all the education you provide.
Thanks, enjoyed, have watched several times. I like forest, but they always wound up too heavy to move. Love Shohin and really Shohin forest. But I'm a clutz. When I try putting one together trees go in all directions. If making another can you show more on placing trees, and especially wiring the trees. I have major problems with wiring a forest. Thanks.
Hi Morten :) Great vid - you make it look so easy, although it definitely takes a lot of skill! In the first forest you make, what drainage soil did you use in the bottom and what soil mixture did you use in the top layer? Thanks!!
Hi Jacob. Thanks . The drainage soil is a course type of clay soil. Not Akadama, but with the same features. The top layer is a blend of organic hq soil mixed with a Akadama-like clay adding a lot of oxygen and coarser structure to the soil. In the transplanting series you will get a detailed explanation and samples at shohin-europe.com/bonsai-video-studio-2/
It was an inspiring and charming video !!! 2 questions..what soil mix did you use for them? after how many years will you do root pruning on these? and thanks again !
Thanks. The soil mixture is 30 percent Akadama-quality soil type mixed with 70 percent organic soil. Repotting will be in three years time I guess. Depending on the development of the trees.
Morten: In a truly natural setting we seldom see a forest of like species, but in the Bonsai world forest plantings are of like species. Why can you not make a forest of dissimilar tree species?
You can. Using same species makes a calm and peaceful feeling more easily. A bonsai forest planting also is a slice of a forest, and not aimed at presenting a full forest. Mixed forests are sometimes seen as bonsai too. But more difficult to control regarding different species demanding different conditions in the same container.
@@ShohinbonsaiEurope Ahh Yes it is much less complex and calming to have like species for sure. I am inspired to tackle a shohin forest in the springtime here in Canada, but I will challenge myself to find complimentary and compatible different species for a mixed forest project for next year. Thanks
This is the best guide for group planting that you will ever find. Very well explained and detailed. Thank you for this video, Morten.
An excellent video with great looking forests! Very inspiring.
Fabulous little video. Suddenly I have another project to add to my list once I can get my hands on some appropriate seedlings.

Would be great to get an update on these forests!!
Very inspiring. I like the idea of creating near or far impression of forests using different arrangements of the bigger and small trees. Thanks!
Tiny pot and yet exuding a panoramic view of a real forest. Pleasing to the eyes. Beautiful shohin forest!.

Really nice! Is this video also shot in december?
It is. And trees are stored in a cold greenhouse, so they are ready for spring and protected for the winter.
Wish I could go out during Christmas week and collect saplings, but here the ground is covered with snow and frozen solid.......
Kenneth Stensrud Spring comes sooner or later 😊🌿
I just followed this video today and it came out great but not as good at yours ! I hope it survives because I’ve only been doing it for a year
Glad it was a good inspiration. Just be patient and it will evolve. Good luck and have fun with it.

La foresta de ustedes es muy parecida a la del sur de Chile . Me refiero a los bosques Australes
