Great episode when Len smacked Fred one over the bar of the Rovers, in retaliation for a scrap they'd had at a party the night before. Eunice was always way too classy for Fred - it was a very believable storyline though. She married him thinking he'd become a landlord with a pub of his own. Rest in peace Johnny Briggs aka Mike Baldwin. - thanks for the laughs and the drama. Did you know, his presence in Corrie, made the show rightfully Number One again after Crossroads was beating them in the early 70's. BTW, I loved the Gordon Lewis character and I wished the Corrie writers got Bet to marry him, instead of Alec Gilroy.
Totally agree, Johnny Briggs was a fantastic actor who was a huge shot in the arm to Coronation Street, bringing Southern glamour and chutzpah to the cobbles for 30 years from 1976 - 2006. He was such a talent, he hit the ground running as Mike - the character was fully formed from his first appearance in 1976, and never wavered. A lesser actor would have given a cliched, Cockney wide boy performance. But Johnny brought depth and authenticity to Mike, and made him fascinating. He could be ruthless in his professional and personal dealings. But he also had a heart of gold - as we saw in his kindnesses to Hilda, for example. Who could forget that fabulous storyline when Hilda 'won' Mike in a competition and he was a true gent, taking her to a posh restaurant and treating her like a lady. Hilda asked him to show her a bit of style, and smiling proudly, he obliged and gave her the best date ever. I think every woman watching those scenes found her heart melting a little at Mike's kind heart!
@@glamdolly30 Yes, he really was a terrific actor and, as you say, brought so much more to the character. He could be ruthless but he was also vulnerable and he responded to the vulnerabilities in others sensitively a lot of the time. The date with Hilda is a good example of this, he gave her a glimpse of another kind of life but not in a way that made him the central character with the chance to be flash and show off. He stepped aside and let the focus be on Hilda and he listened to her. He showed the caring and supportive side of himself to Ivy several times when he drove her to the hospital to be with Burt after he'd been in an accident, and later when he went missing. He was different from the other characters in that he was a Londoner, he made far more money than they did, and he was the capitalist factory owner often at odds with his workforce. But he was simultaneously very connected to those around him, and not just in romantic terms. A great character played by a first-rate actor.

I'm curious about Uncle Albert's exit from the show and why it wasn't a bigger storyline. I just looked it up - Uncle Albert died of a heart attack while visiting his daughter Beattie on 13th May 1984, mirroring the death of actor Jack Howarth 6 weeks earlier. I don't recall much fuss being made about Uncle Albert's death, which is surprising considering he was such a big character and an original cast member. Did the Street have a funeral for him?
There should have been a street funeral for Ena Sharples too - and a big belter of a one for Elsie Tanner with her coffin draped with the American flag and a whole bunch of American veterans following the coffin as it passed The Rover ,Baldwins Factory , Jims Cafe and the old Miami Modes building on its way to the cemetary

Burt's Holland storyline is so very sad, as I believe it was created to write him out whilst he had legal troubles, looking for love in toilets, never a good a idea, but still, not in a million years criminal. The horrific stress of this likely lead to his subsequent poor health & untimely demise, he seems like such a nice man, adored by cast & crew, the only crime committed was against him.

8:25 Yet again Deirdre shuts Tracy-luv out of the room, for absolutely no good reason. No wonder Tracy grew up to be a murderer! She shut the door on her too, what a great mother - she's only a tot, she could drink bleach or fall down the stairs! Deirdre was always chucking that poor kid out on her own on some feeble pretext. When she got older it was always "Go and listen to your tapes". There was a period on the show when there was no Tracy - the little girl who played her - Holly Chamarette - couldn't act to save her life and was ditched by Bill Podmore. And he didn't bother to re-cast the role for around 2 years before Dawn Acton took over. During that time Tracy was permanently locked upstairs in her room, like some sort of captive! Child actors are a huge inconvenience to a soap - that's why they keep them to a minimum, and it's no doubt the real reason Ken sent his twins to be raised by their grandmother in Scotland! You seem the sort who could find malevolence in an Enid Blyton book......Coronation = Life, plain and simple, good and bad in us all, more in some than others I guess.
There were a few big turning points, that changed the status quo of Corrie, 1964 saw the Ogden arrive, and the first appearance of Rita. 1969 colour, arrival of Betty Turpin and 1970 arrival (full time) of Bet Lynch. Early 1980s, still many of the originals left, Annie, Elsie. Second half of the 1980s with the arrival of darker storylines. 1997 through til 2009. The 2010s declined massively after 2014, the 2020s corrie is not even comparable to the yesteryear of the 1990s
I don't understand why some wives can't deal with their husbands away from a short while especially if there weren't any other options.. If Ivy cant cope with 3 months alone, then that's pathetic. I think that if Bert did that, he wouldn't have gone downhill as fast. It would've given him some pride back.
I agree with you, I felt the same way seeing that.. it's not as if she has any little ones to look after :D The writers should have credited Ivy with a bit more maturity. Mind you, her character is a bit of a worrywart!
It’s only make believe. Most sensible women who’ve been married a while would be packing his bag before he’d finished telling her. Two or three lovely months on her own

Deirdre really played the field in these episodes and wasn't loyal to any of the men she dated, often at the same time. Ken, the Dutch guy and Mike, all at once pretty much. And as for her tedious banter...its not surprising that her nickname was Dreary. 😂

Nowadays no soap would get away with that storyline - a father who can't cope with his own children, so palms them off on his mother-in-law to raise, it's utterly outrageous!
She is a terrible mother
im pretty sure tracy turned out to be a murderer.. b/c thats what the writers wrote for her character.
@@kelleybunny I'm pretty sure you're right. And I'm fairly certain when I wrote my original post I was being ironic!
@@glamdolly30 doesn’t read that way. Seems you’ve lost the plot & forgot that Deirdre & Tracy are utterly fictional characters…
Get well soon luv…
@@victoriadelaney1123 You've accidentally blundered into a fun chat for people who love vintage Coronation Street. You clearly got lost on your way to serious factual documentaries for people with no sense of humour.
Glad to help, luv!
Naughty Stan ordering eggs at Elsie's after getting his egg allergy diagnosis 😮
I used to watch Corrie every week. Years ago. Looking at these old episodes I can’t believe the Spite. Hatred. Jealousy. Bigotry. & Nasty characters in every episode. I have never watched it for over 45 years. Thank goodness..
You seem the sort who could find malevolence in an Enid Blyton book......Coronation = Life, plain and simple, good and bad in us all, more in some than others I guess.
... But you're watching these, AGAIN, funny that !
But you’re watching it now !! Strange that
There were a few big turning points, that changed the status quo of Corrie, 1964 saw the Ogden arrive, and the first appearance of Rita.
I've known some who can't survive a night 🙄
I agree with you, I felt the same way seeing that.. it's not as if she has any little ones to look after :D The writers should have credited Ivy with a bit more maturity. Mind you, her character is a bit of a worrywart!
Burt should a run a mile from Ivy, always hated her.
It’s only make believe. Most sensible women who’ve been married a while would be packing his bag before he’d finished telling her. Two or three lovely months on her own
@@clareshaughnessy2745 I realize it's a soap, thank you. However many women wouldn't cope, that's a reality or wouldn't trust their husbands. You think every marriage is healthy? Pretty naive of you to think that.
Kevin whatley in the cafe, went on to play in some wonderful shows.
Fred should’ve went of the show a hell of a lot quicker he is so full of it, I can box his ears
The best actress in this absolute classic is either Doris Speed or the young lass who plays Tracy Langton😊
Bread man was in dinnerladies .
I didn’t like Fred gee he thought he was funny 🤣 but he wasn’t! I’m glad Deirdre and Ken got together
Thank you 🙏 for these memories
Flipping 'eck! Ivy is just getting over the shock that she wasn't asked to name the babby and choose the godparents, or share Gail and Brian's bed.
Then, Bert hits her with the news that he's thinking of working abroad. Poor cow.
Surprised he put up with her at all.
Diedre is messing around with Mike, too??! 🤣😂
Deirdre really played the field in these episodes and wasn't loyal to any of the men she dated, often at the same time. Ken, the Dutch guy and Mike, all at once pretty much. And as for her tedious banter...its not surprising that her nickname was Dreary. 😂
It was maybe a good storyline but how on earth can the Rovers Return's revenue support Fred Gee, Bet Lynch, Betty Turpin, Hilda Ogden, Annie Walker's holiday cruise and a relief manager's wages?
Nice one dee for the save the money of clothes it's like did Hilda say ox tail 😅😅😅😅
Bert 45!!!
Interesting to see Rita and "Wally" having a scene together at the door of the Rovers. I never knew the actor behind Wally and Alan, Mark Eden, married Sue Nicholls AKA Audrey in real life.
This is titled Feb 81 but the start frame says Feb 1980, 8 episodes, 2070 - 2077
I have no idea what to expect...
Don't worry it's all ok, I just made a mistake with the year on screen. Look at January for the episode numbers.
@@professionalgun6674 Yes, I sussed that after posting, thank you.
The girls on her day off, yet Gail was expected to work 7 days a week
I wonder 💭 what the beef 🥩 is between Fredd Gee@ Eddie Yates?
Noticed it in the previous month so need to ask before I forget. Are those Lindt chocolate bars in the corner shop behind the till? I thought Lindt was pretty much a relatively new chocolate to the UK like in the last 15 years or so? Random question but bugging me. Also, Fred has been steadily getting on my nerves these last few months but all of a sudden I really can't stand the guy. I don't even know why but he just seems a right knob. 😂 Nev from Auf Wiedersehen Pet having a go at being a believable lout. Fail pal haha.
I remember having Lindt animals at Easter when I was little and that was many many moons ago. Certainly early 80s. Nicest tasting chocolate ever - much better than their current sickliness x
45 Burt - Jesus. He looks 60.
Dreiry was a terrible mother, no wonder Tracy turned I to a nutcase
Is that Alan Bradley 😂
Yep - in his previous, short lived incarnation as Wally Randall, the fruit machine salesman who broke Elsie's heart!
Is he the guy who got decapitated by a tram in Blackpool?
1:42:00 I wish they’d developed the character of Sandra, she was really good , brilliant scene between her and Elsie
Gobby Sandra was a was a bit of a Suzie Birchill type - guess the writers decided they didn't need another!
Oh aye, that Fred is so bloody clever, chucking pie-crust on the roof of Eddie's bin-wagon.
Meanwhile, Mike's old-fella is buggering him, left and right. He's even got Fred helping him bugger Alf.
The reappearing glass of vodka on the bar at 1. 51. Bet places the drink there and you see her do it again seconds later.
Forgot that "Wally Randall." a.k.a.
Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin), also played a part in Crossroads - he was a cornerstone of British Soaps!
You're no' Wally Randell, you're Boabie the barman!
Never did understand William Roache as this great leading man. Boggles the mind. Pompous, entitled and quite frankly, off putting. Ken is such a pratt.
It’s getting really exciting. I wonder 💭 if he will be going 2 Holland.
It was lovly seeing Mavis reading Tracy a story
thx
Very strange watching characters that will be in different roles later - Kevin Webster and Alan Bradley
This would have been about 6 weeks after the murder of John Lennon; I guess the show felt it appropriate to pay respects to a local northern boy.
Did they mention John Lennon in the script? I didn't notice any reference to him?
@@glamdolly30 No, a Lennon song was played.
@@rickallen6378 Thanks - I noticed it after I posted to you, 'Imagine' played twice in the cafe. A nice nod to a Northern superstar!
Starting Over was played repeatedly on the radio in Australia throughout 1981. We all know where we were when we heard the news.
OMG! Thats Kevin Whatley talking to Lorraine in the cafe!!!
The future Alan Bradley
Onslow what a bonus
1hr 20mins in...laugh out load funny, brilliant Corrie
Bette doesn’t have a bathroom of her own, but she always looks fabulous!!
Stanley n Uncle Albert must be twin miserable gus, Ivy never shuts up
Different actress playing Tracy then
A fantastic end to the month. 😂 Brilliant.
I'd forgotten how pompous Ken was in the 80s
And the 60’s,70’s, 90’s, noughties…….
Why is the picture quality poor?
Because you touch yourself at night.
Get over it.
Can anyone tell me what happened to Jerry Booth?
The killjoy copyright police deleted his channel.
🤦♀️ oh no
He died in real life of a heart attack so young

Was that Kevin whaitley 109
Couple of other Auf Pet actors in recent episodes too.Deirdrie's dutch friend was Nev's mate Helmut and fella who stopped Fred at the tip was Kevin Lloyd, who played Harry Blackburn the plumber. Was only listening but recognized Lloyds voice straight away.
I wonder who knitted the bread man's hair.
