Every song on The Bodyguard (except Jesus Loves Me) live she dropped about one to two tones. She never sang 'I Will Always Love You' in the original key and this song is not so high, but it requires a lot of dynamics and breath control to hold the note for several seconds without spoiling the phrasing and she did it like no one else ever did or will. It's not about hitting the highest note, it's about mastering the song, the melody as a whole and at that she excelled.

These guys are musicians of the highest caliber - they are watching her for the cues on the dramatic 'don't - make - me' section because those are fermata notes and the singer decides when to move from note to note. But they are also backing up whitney houston so they are ready for anything she may do. She likely never sang a song the same way twice which is part of her brilliance.

and so on. it had nothing to do with cockiness. it allowed her the chance to breath, she was not a great diaphramatc singer. she took so many pauses and breaks in between words and phrases. that was part of her schtick and why so many people love her. it was part of the show and she made it work for her.

In ear monitors provide the singer with a mix of certain instruments and their own voice. Her signal to the sound cruel probably indicated she needed to hear more of “herself” in the monitor in her ear, to stay on the key. Possibly the instrument mix was too loud on stage and she was having trouble hearing her own voice? No one will really know
