I had a slight drug problem back in the early 2000's, until about 2014. Due to me reverting to retail thefts to finance my habit, I found myself doing five bits in the Illinois department of corrections. Luckily, being a non - viloent inmate, who basically followed the rules, I was put into minimum securtiy joints, as well as being sent to work camps to do my time at. The one bad experience that I had with a correction officer was this. Back in 2007, when you were able to smoke cigarettes in prison, lead to me having a C.O. assault me, in an unusual way. I guess that I had made a sarcastic comment to the C.O., and he took my lit cigarette, and then proceeded to take the lit end of it, and press it onto the bare skin, on my right arm. He did not let up, either, he kept it pressed pretty hard, onto my skin, and kept it there, for at least five seconds. The resulting pain and burn that resulted from that, was pretty damn bad. I tried to make a complaint about the situation, but was totally ignored. That was my worst experience with a C,O., that I had experienced in the I.D.O.C. And, I had also experienced the misery of having 100%, Ice cold water, while taking a shower. As well as then having it revert to 100% hot water, while takiing a shower. Unfortunately, there was really nothing you can do, to remedy these situations. As they say, snitches get stiches. And it is would be bad enough, to rat on a fellow inmate. I could only imagine what would happen from ratting on a correcitonal officer. As they essentially have complete control over your daily life, and they can make it quite misery filled. The one thing that I can say is that I am done with that life, and that I can now look back onto it, and be relieved that those days are in my rearview mirror. I have a lot of stories, just like this guy. I wish that I could capitolize on them, just like Larry Lawton has done...
Poor Larry, you can tell he‘s having flashbacks when telling about the experience of the guard urinating on him, the way he repeats himself you can almost feel him reliving his trauma
@Brian K. The government claims to be Fair and Just. You're justifying brutality and dehumanization in a system that should not contain such things. If you exit a criminal world to go into a legalized criminal world, rehabilitation is literally impossible. The moment the government takes you away, you're in their hands. They advertise that you'll pay in Time, not in blood. Nowhere in the law you see a claim that urinating on inmates is allowed. You can't do that to "normal" people, this should be no different. Don't let criminals off the hook, but treat them like humans. Death sentences were significantly more humane than this, and that was considered too much.
@@LarryLawtonJewelThief I know it might be hard to fight for criminal justice reform in a time where being open minded is not many people's forte. I guess all I can say is keep fighting Lawton, you're doing great. Thank you for opening our eyes to the horrors of America's prison system.

My father, a Green Beret who spent a few months on the local police force after he left the military, used to always say; “The only man more sorry than an inmate is the man who turns his key”. I never truly knew what he meant until I watched this episode. Thank you!
Fuck you. So a guard is sorry he urinates one some of he own free will. Yeah I'd be really sorry and sit down to have a heart to heart with the inmate. Go fuck yourself. If the guards does'nt like abusing and degraiding people why not quit
@@GerdesDK yo! I think you misinterpreted the comment! What I was essentially saying is “fuck key-turners”. They are lower than the folks they keep in a cell.
I think that my statement may have been misinterpreted. Down south we often use the word “sorry” as a term to describe someone or something that doesn’t meet a particular standard. Examples are; “sorry ass sum bi***”, “sorry old fu**”, “that’s a sorry damn……truck, tree, tool, tire, boat, banana, loaf of bread…… I could go on. My comment is a dig at key-turners. What my old man was saying is that no matter what you’ve done that led you to jail, the fu**er who turns the key has done way worse. In other words, a man that keeps another man’s doors locked is more of a criminal than the person behind the door. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Nobody cares about the inmates though because everyone thinks they're the ones in the wrong no matter what Sadly these people are bigger criminals than the ones they're supposed to reform and help

"There's a fine line between an inmate and a guard." Most of the bullies I went to high school with either ended up as inmates or as guards at the prison a few miles from where we graduated.
The line can be finer than you know. I’ve been both a high ranking lieutenant at prison. I’ve also been an inmate. Fortunately, I didn’t have the “John Wayne” syndrome that you see often among guards. But it’s a crazy story.
I do agree you can be gangsta until that guard yes hey piep (or your last name/number when locked up) you have no idea what is going on up until the date you leave the place anytime they call your name (or last name/number) your not sure what's so you sit there and wonder I get flashbacks of my time in prison I spent 4yrs behind bars/ steel doors

U are listening to a criminal point of view, think about prison guards who have to take care of different types of inmates how much distress would they be facing
@@jwall11666 Okay ..... Ummmm in my country (India ),there is a man in jail putting out a plea to the government for getting raped by prison inmates. The irony is that the man himself is in jail for gang raping a 22 year old girl when he was a bus conductor and then proceeding to put a iron rod in her genitals which ultimately led to her death. Do you still think the person deserves a plea? Hasn't he done something bad in the society to be put in a jail at the first place? @@AskMeddi I agree, but also think having someone who speaks the way he does, especially just his relaxed nature where he's able to swear and be himself, would definitely capture the attention of Highschoolers.
That's literally his job right now. If you finish the series he talks about his Reality Check Program he started in 2010 where he talks about what prison is actually like to troubled youth and people with misdemeanors. It's even been court mandated by several judges to juveniles to watch his videos. He starts by walking into a classroom and says "how many of you could hide a prison shank up your ass?" Then when the giggling dies down, he follows it up with "I did, and so will you if you want to survive where I've been." According to the statistics he gives, 90% of people in the program don't go back to jail.
@phremagnus2517 He was a criminal. A thief. He was not a sociopath or psychopath. He did not commit a crime like a sex offense, murder, kidnapping. He never shot anyone, stabbed anyone, or caused physical injury. He then took responsibility for the crimes he committed and acknowledged that what he did was wrong. He did his time and now works with at risk youth to help them make better life choices than he did and tries to help people. Please explain to me how that makes him a monster?
I can’t imagine how bad his PTSD might be after all that insane shit they did to him. Sounds like shit they would do to you in a 3rd world country. So sorry man that’s so wrong.
@Queen Katie Of course he committed crimes and did something wrong, Of course he deserves punishment, but the shit they did to him in a US prison is just inhumane, Pissing on someone just because you're a guard and think it's okay for you to? How does someone deserve that?

This makes me wanna be one more to be the guys you talked about when you were in prison in Florida. The nice guy. The one that has a heart. This stuff breaks my heart!
Larry, you are truly an inspiration. This episode was some shit straight out of The Shawshank Redemption. What a saga of the unrelenting battle between you and the warden, enlisting every trick in the book: extreme confinement, torture, dehumanization, and bribery. None could stop you from tenaciously fighting against a corrupt system in the pursuit of justice and reform. Your actions were nothing short of heroic. I truly believe your moving stories and ever growing platform will make a major impact on reforming a broken system
Shit Larry, if i am getting chills just hearing you tell us this i cant imagine how bad it is for you. I was thinking this aswell , Joe has a good platform and is all for prison reform, Diaz has done a bid or two and his hilarious banter could only add to the conversation
It makes me sad to hear how guards regularly treat inmates like they're less than human, less than animals either. I'm thankful for the fact that in my country, corruption in prisons, and as a whole is very low. Keep telling people and get you're story out there man.
TheLastTurtle I think that’s it’s because the guards think they are hero’s when they beat up criminals. You have to remember that some of those guys are murderers and deserve to be punished, but not like they’re inhuman
In other countries prisons aren't really that bad. For example in my country Finland the prisons are very pleasant and in another country (I dont remember which) the prisons were basically less free hotels. That is what rehabilitates you into society. In America it's not really about rehabilitation, but making you regret doing a crime as much as possible
Poop Sock Apparently there is something psychological about it. Look up the Standford prison experiment I belueve its called but be aware its horrible reading

Mr. Lawton. Thank you for sharing your stories. I myself found out about you shortly after doing a little time in county. I've been in a few times, granted u don't expect your stay to be a vacation but the conditions of jails, prisons etc in TX is terrible and is absolutely getting worse, I've been trying to find a way to do my part for prison reform, I talk to so many people on the inside and the inhumanity these men suffer fills me with rage. Regardless of why someone is in doesn't mean they are any less human and the treatment by these crazy and cruel guards and the system in general has to be addressed. Love your work man, God Bless.
Pissing on your face that gave me a rage that’s just too far how can they treat humans like that inmates made a mistake but they are still human and not animals they need to be treated with respect
Fuck am dude. They are a bunch of foreign enemy insurgents. Who cares about their rights. Now imagine what they do to them with that thought in your mind. Because most people think like that.
Had a guard, here, done the same as the guards did to you, he would have been to prison for x amounts of years for abuse, assault and, possibly, even illegal threats, or the like. Many think the prisons in Scandinavia and Northern Europe are too soft, but how come our prisons seem to work. There is less violence among inmates, very few escape attempts and very few go back to prison again after being there. There was one escape a few years back (I think in 2004 or 2007, correct me if I'm wrong) where a few guys armed with assault rifles cut through the fences and scaled the walls of a Swedish maximum security prison to break a guy out. Then there was this guy who served a 1 month prison sentence, in a minimum security prison, but had a toothache and an infection in his tooth so he broke out to go to the dentist. Then, when he was done at the dentist, he reported himself to the police and that he wanted to get picked up and sent back to prison. He got away with a warning and his sentence was prolonged by one day. USA are closing the prisons because of overpopulation and they can't afford them. We, in Sweden, are closing our prisons because we don't need them.

@@GerdesDK Reading comprehension is an amazing thing. You should try it sometime.
we ha ve no idea if those prison guards were sorry.

Man, wow, this really can touch a soul. You're a powerful proof of how humanity can be good when taking responsibility, no matter where someone comes from
No human should be treated like this. Regardless of what they’ve done or who they are
I don’t know... Rapists, Actual Pedos, and Murderers I could slightly beg to differ.
Kay people that play fortnite etc...
I believe there’s a line because with therapy people change but some deserve heavy punishment

Are there? Sure I mean self defense... the killing of a thief/Burglar? But that would fall under self defense in my opinion whether their back is turned or not.
The work you're doing is among the most important I've seen on RUclips.
Everyone's gangsta till the Postmaster General shows up.
Nice try

Everyone gangster till postman pat turns up
Dude you just copied another comment
Hotel?
I've been watching you for weeks. This was the video that moved me to subscribe. This was the video that moved me to write my first comment on RUclips. You are THAT powerful, man. Keep up the fight, and I hope this little gesture tips the scales in your favor. Flip the switch; let's show them we are human beings!
RUclips algorithm sent me here, I’ve been watching these videos for days now
Loving this style of storytelling, it just feels more natural and detailed than when you read straight from the book
Mr. Lawton, I've played a game called The Suffering, with an inmate has to escape Alcatraz alike place, but the nightmares from there cannot be compared to what you have been through. You sir, you are a legend, huge respect, strength and I really really enjoy your stories. You are a role model, for fighting and what you've been through you still came out victorious. Never stop being the person you are, the you now is wonderful and a person I respect.
Hey Larry. I am retired from EMS. My last 8 years were in Edgefield County. I've been to Edgefield FDC quite a few times. I saw alot of questionable things, but never saw anything obvious. I'm sorry you went through that.
God bless you man!
