    Usually I do not comment on youtube, but this time I want to leave my review: this video saved my MacBook! I have a MBP 2015 and recently it had become barely unusable because of the stains on the screen. I was about to buy a new PC when I decided to follow this tutorial. Now my MacBook seems brand-new. Absolutely stunning.
    I used a Cool Mint Listerine (the one with alcohol) and two microfibre cloths, it took me about 1.30 hours to complete the work.
    Two pieces of advice:
    1_ never apply too much pressure, try always to be very careful with your screen in order to avoid damages;
    2_ pay attention to the edges and the corners because the mouthwash may penetrate under the screen. Maybe I have been overcautious, but I applied duct tape on the very edges of my screen so as to "seal" it and avoid unwanted seepages.
    Hope this helps somebody and thank you very much!

    • @hoverbike
      @hoverbike 2 года назад +3

      Here is another advice: Use isopropyl alcohol, instead of mouthwash.
      Fixed a MBP2013 this weekend, ended taking off the anti-glare as it was just so dirty, probably from tobacco smoke as well. Rags became quite yellowish.
      Shiny as a mirror now.
      If anything, cover up your keyboard. The plastics used for the keyboard isn't exactly pristine, and after 10 years, very likely to flake, or even 'melt'. The lacquer is going to come off in any case.

    For those of you who are skeptical, this really does work!! I didn't use that specific kind of Listerine in the video (all I had at home was the Listerine Total Care) but I did use a microfiber cloth. I used quite a lot of the Listerine and it took a lot of good old arm grease and circular motions to get it all off (approximately 40 minutes). Pro tip: my screen was pretty sticky afterwards, so I used a different cloth (wet with normal water) and wiped it down. Let it air dry after that. Now, my screen is super clear and for the first time in YEARS I can actually what is displayed! Thank you so so much for this remedy!

    Like some others mentioned, I thought that it was my fault as well and kept the "annoying" screen for several years. When I learned about this notorious so-called "staingate" issue, I already passed the 4-year repair-at-no-cost period. Apple support representative that they would charge me almost $500 for the replacement of screen. I wish that Apple emailed all the "potentially" affected customers (who registered their MacBook Pro) and let them know this issue and what they offer ...
    Anyhow, I canceled a repair request and followed the directions described in this video "at my own risk". It worked to me! Of course, the screen is now highly reflective as the anti-reflection coating is completely gone. But, it is much better than looking at stained screen.
    Thank you!

      Staingate happened to me well after for years when I cleaned the keyboard and closed the lid afterwards. This is a major engineering flaw and the 4 years warranty is a laugh. You don’t get a better screen as a replacement but the same shitty screen . Apple didn’t solve the issue and screengate existed until 2018 or so ( from 2012) which is crazy. Customers are getting screwed by apple this way. Something major like this should be replaced way after 4 years since you a are buying a top tier MacBook and can expect top quality from that , even after 4 years. Bunch of robbers

    This hack is a lifesaver. I have the 2015 MacBook Pro and I always thought I ruined the screen from one of the screen protectors I had used. I thought it just needed a thorough cleaning so I tried rubbing alcohol multiple times, but it never worked. I just used a generic mouthwash brand and it worked perfect. It only took me around 5-10 minutes to get everything off. The anti glare residue looked kind of pink when I was rubbing it off and I was a little worried that I would ruin the screen, but everything was fine. My screen hasn’t looked this clean since I bought it. Everything looks so much clearer. I wish I had known about the anti glare thing years before.

    It worked great for me on a 2014 Mac Pro. The only thing I did differently than the video, was to soak the microfibre cloth and then stretch it out over the screen. I even poured a little on the cloth where it was drier. I let it sit for 20 minutes...removed it, then swirled a second cloth in small circles over the entire screen and I was done in less than 5 minutes. Wiped it down, then sprayed a little bit of eyeglass cleaner to remove the mouthwash and the screen was very clear. Thanks.... This is absolutely excellent! It does work!!! No Question. Other reviews are not doing it right.! The listerine trick is great. But here's the process. Dip glasses cloth/ Microfiber cloth or any other fine knit cloth in to your bowl of Listerine. " I just used the corner (of Cloth)" and started on a small section of screen. Immediately you can see the gold tint of the anti glare spray that was added to the screen. Just work it in 1/4 sections and be patient abt things here. As you rub you do need to apply a little pressure and rub in small circles. Notice the screen is on its back and down on table. Dip cloth again and continue. It will start to lift and you will see the gold/patterns start disappearing. Now just keep going "with a little pressure" "not hard core, but medium". Make sure and get edges well. Then wipe off screen with Spray cleaner and finally just a "touch" of "dish soap water" smeared on with fingertips and wipe with clean towel. Wah Lahhhhhhh Perfection! I have a 13" and it may have taken 15 mins to save $300- $400 bucks. What a great pay day! Enjoy! Thx Editor Keys!

I waited too long with getting it fixed so I would have to pay €500 to get it fixed because they said the whole retina screen had to be replaced. I was desperate because I'm a student so I don't just have €500 to spend. I really wanted to get rid of it tho, because my internship was about to start and it looked really dirty and unprofessional. I started looking on youtube to see if others had this as well and how to fix it and I stumbled across this video. I didn't even hesitate and immediatly bought Listerine and microfiber cloths. I did hesitate a little before I started rubbing my screen but I knew it was either this or €500. I took me just 15 minutes to get it all of. I was skeptical since some people say this didn't work for them and your video seemed too perfect to me, but this worked great for me, too.
    *Lots of details (because I wouldn't want to gamble with my computer!):* I didn't have a cloth like yours, so I used some of those small cloths given to clean screens or glasses folded over a few times, and I bought the same kind of Listerine you used in this video. The most deteriorated areas in the middle came off immediately while the edges took longer and a little elbow grease. I used up very little Listerine overall. I pressed hard enough to rub the tough stuff off but not hard enough to hurt my computer screen, which was easy--it seems these computers can handle the little bit of pressure needed to clean them this way. I didn't pay attention to the strokes I was making most of the time, and if you forget to do so as well, I think you'll be fine. It took me about 40 minutes in total. It looks almost brand new now. I'm so glad I didn't pay for a screen replacement with the same problem.
    Since this is apparently the gentlest remedy (and maybe cheapest), I'd recommend this to anyone as a first attempt. Now I can watch dark movies and actually see what's happening!

    Just did this on MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013). I have had this computer since 2014. I wasn't eligible for the free repair because I didn't get it done in time. I was a year late, unfortunately. I wanted to fix the screen and I was quoted $540 for a brand new screen or $440 for a used one. I didn't want to pay $540 for a new screen! (It's like half the cost of the computer when I first got it.) So, I did some research and found several people using Listerine. I took a risk and tried it myself. It's definitely a workout. My arms started to hurt but I'd say it was worth it. The screen isn't perfect but I'm extremely satisfied with the results. Maybe I'll try again at a later time. My Macbook is from 2015, I had my screen changed by Apple in 2017. They did it for free within the 4 year program like you said. But the new screen had exactly the same problem. And 2 more years had passed and this time they wouldn't do anything about it without charging. I registered a customer complaint, they said they would look into the policy about the replacement of a replacement that they cant assure me of what can be done about it.

    • @petervangeenhoven6991

      I had the same crappy experience with Apple: they replaced my screen free of charge. After a couple of weeks to my surprise that brand new screen had the exact same problem. But you know how it goes...busy busy busy and didn't go back until a couple of months later, which meant the 4 year period of the extended warranty had expired. This is of course total bull....in my opinion they installed a new screen, and I should get a new factory warranty period of 4 years for that new screen. Apple are real money sucking asses about this. I am excited about the Listerine solution though because I absolutely hate my screen at this moment and this offers some hope that I can fix it myself instead of paying 700€ for a vintage repair...

    It worked for me on a MacBook Pro 2015. Like some I was reluctant to try fearful it would make the screen worse or damage the laptop in some other way. Listerine (blue) was purchased weeks ago but as I didn't like the harsh taste thought I would try it for the screen cleaning. Putting some Listerine on a micro fibre cloth then rubbing didn't have great results initially but, biting the bullet, I poured a small amount directly onto the screen and voila! a few circular motions and the dreaded Staingate started to disappear. It took about 40 minutes of light to medium pressure and the results are stunningly good.

  • @e1dur0
    @e1dur0 5 лет назад +3

    Thnx for the fix definitely works! Although, I found that the microfiber cloth made it difficult and very time consuming. What worked for me was I took a wet wipe rinsed it thoroughly with water, wrung it out and dipped a small portion of it in the Listerine. Started to wipe the screen and it worked perfectly and much faster than the cloth. This also let me get in on the corners because the wipe isn't as thick. Thnx again.

    OK THIS REALLY WORKS! Thank you so much Mark!
    1) It takes a long time. I recommend setting yourself up with a good film in the background and working the laptop screen by laying it flat on your lap. It took me probably an hour and results aren't instantaneous.
    2) Persistence is key; lightish sweeping circular motions with the flats and not the tips of your fingers. Try to look at the staining in daylight and keep gently working until it fades away.
    3) Buy two micro fibre clothes; one for the Listerine and one for a good lens cleaner (aka presciptions glasses cleaner) to remove the Listerine afterwards which leaves a very sticky residue.
    My screen is the best it's EVER been and it cost me an hour of my leisure time and less than ten dollars.

In about 15 minutes the covering was gone, except around the edges which I left to avoid damaging the seal. There's no need to scrub hard. My arm has not hurt this much since Pamela Anderson was on Baywatch! I followed the advice and bought bottle of Cool Mint Listerine. I would like to share my experience trying this out. For reference I have a mid 2012 macbook pro, the original model with the retina display. First thing: I would like to advise everyone trying this to be very careful. It works, BUT, my main advice is to put barely any pressure on the cloth when you are working. Just use large, fast strokes, and do it for a long time, without applying much pressure, and it will work. I now have a brighter spot in the corner of my screen where I worked too hard. This brighter spot has nothing to do with the screen finish, but is an issue with the hardware underneath. It's not TERRIBLE, but it's there, and I regret it. Here is what it looks like now: imgur.com/a/H8HxsMQ You can also see on the right edge of the screen where there is still a small amount of the original finish still remaining.
    SECONDLY: Something the uploader didn't mention, is that there is other junk in listerine that leaves a sticky residue on the screen. Getting this off was kind of a pain, as I didn't have any isopropyl alcohol lying around, but that would have done the trick (and maybe is what should be used for this whole process to begin with). Have a second clean microfiber cloth and some alcohol (or a small amount of very clean water) just to get the listerine off once you're finished.
    THIRDLY: there is another screen defect that this doesn't solve. My screen had wearing from the home row keys right in the middle of the screen. It turns out this wearing was deeper than the screen finish, and while it *is* better, the wearing is still there. I believe this is called pitting, but I'm not sure. perhaps a deeper actual polish would solve this, but I'm calling it quits on this.
    So yeah, it does look better, mostly, but also, it was kind of a failure.

      I have a glossy screen monitor and to clean it I have used rubbing alcohol with distilled water on a microfiber cloth on the screen and now it has those greasy dry marks. Will this trick works the Same in my case?

    In my Macbook, Listerine didn't work entirely, and it was a bit scary, but everything went good by the end.
    Listerine only worked on parts of the screen that were already deliminating. The other parts were pretty good, and I learned it the hard way, couldn't get them off even after some good effort.
    Then I searched online and saw people that had better results with wipes, be it antibacterial, baby or even makeup removal wipes.
    So I tried with makeup removal wipes from my wife and it worked great, WAY better than Listerine. It still took some effort, but now my screen looks much better than before, the stains are gone.
    But only recommend people to do it if the damage is really bugging you. The coating was actually hard to remove from the spots that weren't delaminating yet, so it's better to wait for the problem to develop, it'll be easier to remove then.

    It worked like a charm. Used mouth wash (not Listerine) and it worked just the same. It did leave a little haze at first, but used a piece of toilet paper and it is like new, now. I got this Mac used from a vendor and he gave me a huge discount because he couldn't get it clean. Note; it did take quick a bit of gentle rubbing. It didn't come off with just a chemical reaction. You have to work on it.
    Thanks again.

    I got two macbooks, 2012 (15 inch) and 2013 (13 inch). The 2013 version came off easy using wipes. The 2012 was a bit stubborn. I used 05x Glass Water Stain Remover on it and it only took me 5 minutes of intense rubbing. Screen is spotless now.

    Was sceptical about this. Had a 12" Macbook Retina (2015) and the screen had some anti-relefction taken off with a cheap wipe (Avoid them!). Thought I would try this. Believe me it takes a bit of wax-on/wax off. But after one hour my screen looks new. Cheers for this. Saved me getting my old trusty mac repaired at some cost. One down side I smell of Listerine!

    GENIUS!!! I have been agonizing over this for the last year or two. I have a 2014 MacBook pro which I love, but have been so annoyed at the splotchy screen which has gotten worse over time. I was going to purchase a new screen and install it myself but the cheapest I could find was close to $500 which is the "why bother" cost. So, as a last ditch effort, I found this video and gave it a try when I got home. I used Scope Proheatlh Advanced Tartar control (which I had in my bathroom). I used a lens cloth and rubbed it in and noticed it almost immediately started taking off the baked on film. I then just kept gently rubbing the screen and eventually wiped it all off and did have to use a little more force at times. When done, I used a damp wet cloth with water to take off any last residue and then used a clean lens cloth to polish and the screen is like BRAND NEW! I only wish I had taken before and after pictures. It is mind blowing how well this worked and I can see things I hadn't seen in years. It was like having cataracts removed! Thanks so much for this. You saved me tons of money and time!

    It´s actually pretty amazing. My display was so smeared and stained, I actually had to rub it with Listerine for several minutes, several times. But it´s spotless now! I can´t believe I waited so long with this 😬 I also use a silicone keyboard cover as my MB came with a different keyboard than I´m used to. This cover additionally affects the display, in a negative way, it adds stains after some time of use. But now I know how to clean the display properly, this is fine. Out of enthusiasm, I actually cleaned the keyboard and the cover as well with the same Listerine-soaked cloth, and I´m really happy with the results. THANK YOU!

    I used antibacterial surface wipes. The result is good but I agree that Listerine is probably less harsh. I also had that "what have I done?" moment part way through removing the film.

    Thanks for the tip, I was successful using basic disinfecting wipes. It was really easy and made it look like brand new! The wet wipes broke down the coating and rubbing persistently over small areas eventually took care of it in just about 10 minutes.

    I tried everything from Listerine, toothpaste, and stove cleaner. The ONLY thing that worked and won't take hours of work and little progress that I found was generic all purpose cleaner wipes. The slight abrasion of the cloth works at removing the film and the cleaner breaks it down nicely. I spent HOURS with Listerine and got nowhere. It only took about 45 minutes to do and the screen looks brand new now. I thought I'd share my experience in hopes it helps others.

    I did this today on a macbook pro 2015 (early version). The screen was really bad, but i got used to ignoring it, until it started getting bad around the camera. Then, i looked distored and the picture was dark to the others in meetings. I could bot believe how well this worked. I used amazon knock off mint mouthwash. It took less than 30 mins, including clean up. The screen is completely clear of the delaminating layer, except for the corners which are only part of the bezel. You dont have to soak the screen. Start with a small amount so it doesn't seep between the screen and case. Amazing, thanks.
