if you want to really confirm this put the good key next to the ring and use the bad key to turn it over ..this is how alarm shops by pass the system with a good key taped near the ring usually in the column cover .. i know its a year late but some good info for next poor chap...
So I don’t have the car to hand right this minute but recollection is that it’s a Torx bolt on the underside of the column that holds the cover on, forget the size but it’s probably a T27 or similar. Certainly no special tools required to remove. The antenna ring itself just has a little mount around the barrel that it slides over and is then held in place once the plastic cover is reattached.
I have the exact same issue with my V70. The problem i have is ; i have only 1 key left. I did go to the local key shop, to check if he can read the key. he did say that he can read it, but he can't duplicate it. I also bought a new antenna ring. didn't fixed the issue.. So the only thing that is left is my key i think. my question : Did you check your key at the local keyshop? If yes, could he read it? If not, can you maybe check the key at a local key shop for me? It could reaally help me out! Thanks in advance
@@classiced1416 any volvo dealer can cut and program a KEY ..in the US its about $75 for 1 key . a local lock smith dont have the volvo codes to do them or cut the weird keys ..its a volvo dealer only item...

Are there security screws involved in removing the steering column cover? What tools are needed for the job?

@@classiced1416 it has 3 t25 screws on the bottom side and the ring has a plastic tab up by the wheel so dont force it off ...
I thought that Volvo only started adding chips to keys in 1999.
I think the date may have varied by market. This is a 97 UK market car and definitely had a chip.

What trouble code did you get?
I can’t remember exactly but there was one for the antenna ring.
