It’s weird not to hear the iconic footsteps sounds from the previous engine. Paired with the eerie ambience and lack of NPCs makes this very creepy and also sad in a way.
I hope Half-Life 2 gets the Black Mesa treatment in the future, fans just doing the remake themselves with the blessings of Valve and then put on Steam. Would be a larger undertaking compared to Half-Life 1, but who knows in the future.
What I'd love to see even more is Crowbar Collective's own interpretation of HL2 entirely, maybe taking elements from the beta to create something much more bold and unique. Call it "City 17".
Considering Crowbar collective took what was a 12 hour game (HL1) and made it into a modern game that takes the average person around 20-24 hours (probably even a little longer) I'd say it's definitely a possibility.
black mesa isnt hl1. the changes totally disrupt the intended flow of the game (eg, fight 40 mobs between getting a weapon and the first time you're meant to use it, On a Rail is mostly removed, music is totally out of place etc) and Xen is entirely its own thing. it's more of an expanded edition than any kind of actual remake. i understand the appeal since playing actual hl1 sucks even compared to less sophisticated games like duke nukem, and the hl1 source release is broken as hell, but if you want to play Half Life 1 you still have to play Half Life 1. They literally never delivered on the concept of a half life 1 updated to modern gaming conventions, and honestly it seems a bit rich to me to charge us for feature creep nobody asked for when we already own both games its made from.
This game was the reason for creating a steam Account (23 May 2005), which I didn´t know back in the time you had to. The MP Deathmatch was great as well, never killed so many by throwing toilettes on them. 18 years later, I have 244 games on my Steam Account and still playing active other games but nothing were the same like the Half Life Series.
The graphics and physics were so far ahead, and yet the game was also extremely well optimised so it ran beautifully on modest hardware. Still amazes me to think about it.
This really looks awesome and I wish that someone made a remake of half life 2 other than the cinematic mod they need to at least make a remake of Half life 2 like they did in Black Mesa

It's an impressive showcase for sure, but I do think it also reflects how HL2 still holds up in comparison visually. At least HL2: Update, which polishes it up with some of the updates they made in episode 2 and lost coast.
All of the textures (or almost all of them) are replaced with HL alyx textures, but yeah, a example of how good illumination and shadows can change almost everything are the ENB series gta sa mods, or the counter strike 1.6 ported into counter strike source
I think Valve is waiting to make half life 3 when graphics and physics technology has advanced so much to where it's absolutely realistic as possible, and then they will make half life 3
It feels so lifeless and empty, and honestly I kinda like it. I do wish there was more interaction but still. I feel like it would work well if you had like the half life beta designs or something.
@1:36 that ambient drone sound is what really always drew me back with this game series. There's something about it, that is both hauntingly beautiful and terrifying at the same time, like you are actually witnessing the end of humanity. That sound creates both dread and sense of "hiding in secret places" vibe that no other game has since recreated for me.
Definitely a good rebuild of the original. Aside from the AI being minimal it would make for a good modern port of the game in VR. With enough time given this could be the successor to Black Mesa. There's also the consideration of remaking that with Source 2.
Even the original game with the HL2 VR mod is just mindblowingly good. I could not believe how well the gravity gun and physics engine translated to VR, it's like it was made for it. Best way to describe it... Ever played a game so much you started having dreams you were IN the game? That's HL2 VR mod.
Yeah. Hopefully this is just a pre-release version. I'd love to see it with at least some citizens on the streets of City 17. Also, the Combine soldiers still used "Alyx" to identify the player, who is clearly Gordon Freeman.
Some smallest elements like tree and bush leaves still have old bulky design. However this is already better. Indeed would like to see proper remake of all HL2 parts.
Anyway I don't know if you know the part I am talking about in a Maury Povich, or maybe it was Jerry Springer, episode where the woman said to this due, "You look like a alien!".
This probably looks fantastic in VR, somehow I never knew it was a thing after playing through Alyx! yeah it doesn't have the best gunplay and it's obviously not finished but this is more for the "Wow" factor of looking at HL2 running in Source 2 and being there, and there's always HL2VR with the good old gameplay. Either way this is amazing.

I love how Dr. Breen's Private Reserve is called a "water flavoured drink" on the vending machine. Great use of flavor text. (I prefer the original stun batons to the Alyx version used here though)
I'm currently playing through it. I can confirm this looks considerably better, but it is still a source engine so not significantly better especially by most AAA standards nowadays. Not a bash at all, source and source 2 have their charm for sure, but it's not groundbreaking and I don't really mind the OG graphics.
as a guy from east europe it's just genius to me that they made the decision to have the scenery take place at that region. The athmosphere is just amazing and interesting

Well the gunplay is actually quite good. The guns models and animations are from the Mmod anyone can install and play with.
