  • Magic Sam was an adonis of Chicago blues, a natural talent on guitar and a strong singer who died way too young. His late 50s recordings had that stinging, prominent guitar and a stripped down band that became the archetype of the West Side Sound. He came to Chicago from Mississippi at 16 (Eddie C. Campbell lived right down the street!) and recorded his classic hit "All Your Love" at the age of 20. It's one of those songs that is so recognizable, it should be played as note to note as you can. I've found and listened carefully to seven recordings by Magic Sam of this tune, and he played it practically as a set piece every time-- did he owe an accurate reproduction of his hit to his fans, or was it a repetitive emotional ritual? I THOUGHT I knew the song, but slowing down the record and listening closely again was a lot of fun and something I needed to do!

Thank you SO MUCH for memorializing this Johnny. You’d make Sam and Eddie both so happy. I played with Eddie for a few years in mid 90s and we used to check in on you all over the city 😎

Bro: you made this one to tell the three other people that watch the crazy stuff I put up now and then shame on me for daring to set foot on the hallowed ground of the Immortal Samuel Gene Maghett, huh? This is why I love you so: you set the record straight after I leave it out in the sun all day to get warped 🤣🙏💜

I learnt guitar without a pick so I loved learning Sam's pieces they flowed easier was nice its rare you get lead guitarists not using picks he played his lightning fast boogies and other jams no pick either all ur love is slow enough in comparison to some of the blues he done he was as quick and sharp as buddy guy minus a pick

Oh yeah. Thanks Darren. I'm gonna circle back to Magic Sam's slow blues style and will include Just Got to Know. Billy Boy Arnold has a great version of that JImmy McCracklin song too.
