Kudos for the quick response in ensuring that your neighbours were safe. When my parents had their boat they frequently used two anchors, particularly when heavy weather was expected, because they wanted to be sure that their boat was secure.

Yes, I agree with your comments Rick - in regards to anchors and I would go as far as to say that your anchor is one of the most important pieces of hardware onboard and the ability to deploy it successfully the most critical skill to develop! Your anchor is both your first and last line of defence. It’s what prevents you from your boat becoming a total and unrecoverable loss when all else has failed!

I am using Navionics also and have also found areas that are way off. Entire islands that do not exist on chart could be disaster if you are traveling overnight. Once some birds saved me by standing on unmarked rocks just below the water surface. I just happened to notice their legs above water so they were not swimming. Its impossible to see everything from helm at different times of the day.

never ceases to amaze me that folk deploy an anchor using the electric motor of the windlass and not the taper clutch. Its my posting "pet hate" far too many videoed yacht people do it. Its laborious, noisy, slow and very hit and miss. The winch handle fitting is to release the cable to totally free fall all the way to a controlled slow delivery and gradual tighten when pulling up on the cable to set the anchor. I'm sure you'll agree

Somebody broke the rule # 3!
Rule 1 - pick your spot carefully, think about bottom type and wind shifts.
Rule 2 - more scope is better than counting on chain catenary.
Rule 3 - once the anchor is down, stay in the cockpit and watch while the anchor settles in and chain straightens out as you sail back and forth, stay there until you have had a couple of the inevitable gusts pass thru.

Nice to see the San Blas again. I spent 3 weeks there a few years ago and it was the best place in 45 years of sailing. Is Lisa, the transvestite, still selling molas??? She was up near Provenir Island (where there is an airstrip and it is a good place to check in and out of Yala). On anchoring: my view is you need a good anchor, but I have rescued more folks from lousy technique and lack of skill than the size of their anchor--folks think if they buy the most expensive one it will make up for experience and judgement. In your friend’s case, anchoring in a garbage bag--well no technique or anchor (except diving on it) will ensure that won’t drag. The windward side of those islands is a huge plastic reef from all the crap from Colombia and Venezuela that comes with the trades. The Cunha caretakers collect and burn it, but they can never keep up. On the charts, you have an issue with Navionics--I used a raster based program (I think it was from Admiralty charts) which was good, but the depths were off a bit and much was not marked-but the datums were good. Enjoy yourself. You can take the inside passage back to Colon or Bocas Del Toro and save the big seas if you are going that way. Don’t miss Guanaja Island if you get up to Honduras.
