I looooove Dune! HOT TIP: At one point when it felt a bit slow, I went online and looked up “music to listen to while reading Dune” and it completely changed the game for me. The right music totally sucked me into that world and I breezed right through it. It’s amazing how powerful music can be. Some suggestions were....
    -“Bladerunner 2049” original soundtrack
    -“Gone Girl” original soundtrack
    -“Koyaanisqatsi” original soundtrack
-Anything by Andreas Vollenweider or Bonobo
    ☺️enjoy!!!

This is such an amazing suggestion, I feel like I hear this type of music in my head just looking at the cover, but would have never thought to read to it. Thank you! 💛

You need to read My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh!! It’s set in New York City in 2000 and 2001 and follows an unnamed protagonist as she gradually escalates her use of prescription medications in an attempt to sleep for an entire year.
Such an easy and quick but absolutely wonderful read!

Okay finished! I just read The Dutch House last week and loved it! If you like those inter-generational family epics, I would highly recommend The Most Fun We Ever Had by Clare Lombardo. It follows the lives of a Catholic family of four sisters and all the ups and downs they face, family secrets, love, loss, careers, etc etc. So far, its my favourite book I've read this year and is definitely one of my favourite books of all time. Along that same vein is Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane. I read that last year and I still think about it now and shout about it to anyone who will listen (and anyone who won't!). You mentioned you enjoy historical fiction so I think you'd really enjoy Sarah Waters' work. I've only read Affinity and Fingersmith but coming from someone who doesn't love that genre, I genuinely couldn't put them down (think theres an adaption of Fingersmith maybe on the BBC too). Would also highly recommend Fleishman Is In Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and The Confession by Jessie Burton as just great sink-your-teeth-into reads :)

If you like sci-fi fantasy and the idea of space opera appeals to you I highly recommend The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. The books are not your typical words on a page, the story is told in the form of interviews, spaceship plans, and lots of visuals that flow so well to tell a really thrilling story.
I loved HP growing up (still do) and I'll always cherish the story and what it meant to me for more than half my life but I no longer support said problematic author - I used to buy all the new editions but no more.

For book recommendations; I adore ‘The Great Gatsby’ even though I despise every character in it 😂 Another book I love which is one of my (if not the) favorites is ‘The Awakening’ by Kate Chopin. It’s set in New Orleans in the late 19th century/turn of the century and is about a woman who struggles with her place in society and its norms. It’s so rarely talked about but I loved it immensely and think about it so much over two years later. Highly highly recommend! 🧡

I would like to hear your thoughts on the new books, especially Dune! I am also a huge fan of Philip Pullman's books and I'm curious - have you read the new trilogy which is a sequel of Northern lights? I must say that I wasn't especially enamoured by the song of Achilles or Circe, but that is probably down to me being Greek and a bit more critical about how the stories are interpreted / written. If you like the setting of the Trojan war, I cannot recommend enough The silence of the girls by Pat Barker, which is absolutely excellent, if not very light reading, and if you want to read books set in modern Greece, maybe put Nikos Kazantzakis on the list. His most famous is Zorbas the Greek and I am sure many of his other books are translated in English. :)

Was REALLY enjoying this until 24:57 I have no idea why people think women's rights are 'transphobic'. When you ask people what JK Rowling said that was offensive they don't know, or they say she's making trans people unsafe. There are many transpeople on social media saying she hasn't offended them at all, it seems to be mostly misogynist men gunning for her cancellation. If you think someone saying trans people need support and pose zero threat, but we need to protect women's rights (as Rowling said) is a bigot, I think you probably hate women a bit? It doesn't make sense. A journalist summed it up brilliantly on Twitter by saying "I support trans rights, but if that involves pretending people like Rosie Duffield and JK Rowling are bigots then I'm not on board." Couldn't agree more. This year Rowling has donated millions to those hurt by Covid, including ALL the profits from her new children's book. Women's rights are not problematic, Alex, remember that Ruth Bader Ginsberg said women are oppressed on the basis of SEX and cannot identify out of that. Unsubscribing.

I think the book that has effected me the most this year has been 'tender is the flesh' it is absolutley horrific and heartbreaking and thought provoking but it is worth it. I would recommend with caution. It is about a world where we can no longer consume animal meat and so humans we are breeding humans for that purpose. Its very jarring and there is a lot of discussion on race, class and our place in the world as humans.
