I saw Alan Jones at the Long Beach Grand Prix earlier in the 1977 season, in his first race for Shadow. At one point in practice, he whipped through a section of track so fast I turned to the guy next to me and said "He's going to be World Champion someday."
Andretti and Nielson were driving the Lotus 78, complete with early ground effect technology, no doubt giving them a nice grip advantage in the wet conditions.

AJ … not European so unnoticed but he was an awesome, fast, smooth driver and an unlikely World Champion.
And not a track limit violation in sight
You can't violate something that doesn't exist

The organizers didn’t have the Australian national anthem on hand, so they played “Happy Birthday” for Jones instead. Not the worst choice of music?
When Jack Brabham won the British GP in 1966 they played Walzing Matilda!
That Lotus has so so much more downforce than the rest of the grid. I've always read about it, now I've seen it
Andretti was approaching 40yrs of age. That was considered "old" then in the 1970s.
Yep absolutely. We know better now. That age means still got the skill, but now have the experience.
3:07 Andretti blowing by Lauda...then making him look like he's in reverse...lol 🤯
Rip Niki
The only win for a Shadow.
I don't think Alan Jones speaks German!
