  • Or so we thought. Well this one didn’t go according to plan. Temp gauges are working but about 35 deg off. Major air system problem scared the poop almost out of my butt. So this isn’t really the final day like we thought it was going to be.

    I'm so glad i happened across your videos, it's awesome to know that someone out there who knows how to fix these Detroit's and buses the CORRECT way and keeping them on the road. My great grandmother worked in the GM diesel department back in the day, so I've always been fascinated with Detroit's. Thank you for all your awesome content.

    Drove a bus once that the mechanic had used a few dozen eggs to stop the radiator leaking enough for a quick airport transfer...it worked for that short trip but god did it stink. True story. This video was fun, thanks.

    And your mirrors .

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 лет назад +3

      That's damn good advice whatever you're driving. So many people don't check the gauges regularly when they're on the highway so the first warning they get of something going wrong is when it goes bang. So many people could have saved themselves a lot of money by noticing when the temperature gauge starts to creep up and pulling over somewhere safe to check things out, but if you're not checking your gauges then you don't know until it starts blowing steam out and by then the engine is pretty much cooked so you're looking at a bill for a new engine, or a new vehicle...

      THanks for the reminder! My instructor at trucking school made me glance at the guages every eight seconds when we checked the mirrors. Keep an eye on the tach. For me is was the speedo, and watching for all speed and other signs. I think he might have put a dent in the floor by stomping on an invisible break pedal. He was a hazardous goods driver, alert and proactive.

      Tip of the day with Good Sam; the first question they will ask you is if you’re in a safe place. The correct answer is “no”. They left me stranded in Death Valley for 3 days because I told them I was in an RV park. I was, but the coach was sitting in a spot that someone else had reserved so they couldn’t access the site they had paid for. Oh, they only pay for the mechanics time to get to you. Any parts runs AND the mechanics time and mileage back to their shop is on you. I cancelled. What a joke.

    I completely 100% agree with your review of Good Sam's Platinum RV they left us stranded on the side of the road for four hours and then finally they sent out a mobile repair person instead of just towing it back to my house I was beyond pissed. Because the mobile repair person charged us per hour so we ended up paying 300 dollars. For something I could have fixed in my driveway at my leisure. I will be canceling my subscription at the end of this year they're useless.

    used to work on a 104' boat.. twin 6-71 mains.. a 25KW with a ford leyman 4 .. air shift twin disc transmissions.. had a lot of issues with the air compressor.. i rigged a scuba tank into the supply line to the air horn.. with a globe valve beyond that tee. man did that scuba tank come in handy. when the heat exchanger fell off the ford leyman and caused the it to overheat and shut down as we were coming into harbor. that would not work on most buses.. but it might be an interesting air supply if you have a scuba license.. being able to refill your tank at scuba shops. you might also be able to the same with a carbonation C02 tank.

    Air seems to be a problem with that bus! I feel certain that you're well up on the pneumatics! On the other air... The problems with that, I have more experience with than I sometimes like to admit! The MCI buses through at least the MC-9 all came out with R-12 as the standard refrigerant. I found that R-134a truly is a "drop in" on those systems, as they have a TCXV which automatically adjusts to the heat absorption capacity of the R-134a. The only problems related to the switch is the possibility of seepage through the O ring connections, necessitating replacement with the later ones, which are green in color. One jug of refrigerant should be just about right for a fill. And, the standard 3G oil should be fine. The biggest problem I personally found, outside of hose leaks is with the compressor load/unload system. Generally, the Skinner valves are OK, but the problem will probably be electrical. Seldom had to replace a Penn switch; although the buses I was working on were fairly new at the time. I went back to my real trade in 1985, quite close to home, and generally cleaner as a whole, even though I was always working on buses at home!
    Your videos are always fascinating to watch, and I applaud your ingenuity, especially with the older equipment where many parts are unobtanium!

    Just thinking I've seen 18 wheelers with a semi permanently attached air hose for inner and outer tires that bolts onto the axle housing with a red indicator that show a red center when the air is 5 pounds lower than it should be. You can buy them all the way up to 120 pounds per square inch and shows the air on both tires. When it gets 5 pounds low the red center is visible plus it has an air nipple on the side to refill both tires simultaneously. It also cuts off the air from tire to tire when the air pressure drops 10 pounds below the air pressure setting. If a tire on a set of duals should go flat the connection system won't drain the other tire.
    Might be something for your coach Scott.
    Cheers!

      Must be hard for him to watch this back, knowing all the while the compressor was in self-destruct mode, but there's no use retro-actively beating himself up for it. That's the thing when several people work on stuff (I repair vintage audio things and I refuse to work on stuff other people haven't been able to fix; that said, I might make an exception if the other tech died before he could finish the job), things get overlooked. He's dealing with an engine which wasn't a bus engine, installed in a bus. He caught/fixed a lot of stuff, but he missed the air compressor not being properly plumbed in. Which, let's face it, is highly negligant of the other mechanics.
      Either install it properly or leave it off. If the air compressor had been in a box instead of on the engine, this wouldn't have happened.

    If you get issues like that with sticky tape it's worth trying putting it in a microwave for a minute to soften the adhesive, so long as it's not on a metal roll. It works really well, it's what I do when I need to use my insulating tape as I almost never use it (I hate electrical jobs...)

    Drain the tanks and check the water separator, common failure on high mileage buses that have had minimal maintenance.
    Volvos are notorious for it if the tanks aren't drained monthly, the tanks fill up with sludge then suddenly the whole system just dumps without warning sometimes down to 10 psi and your spring brakes lock on then you spend the next 10 minutes trying to get the pressure back to 90 psi to limp it home. Had more than a few unlucky colleagues have it happen to them while I was driving professionally.
    P.S. Seems the Magic 8 Ball was right lol.

    This has been one of those jobs that has been a PITA from the get go, now the ungrateful SOB has a major oil leak. I'm in the UK and once had a Volvo B10M grenade it's air compressor 200 miles from home in a car park, it took almost 8 hours for someone to bring me another vehicle to get home. The coach was eventually recovered 24 hrs later

    From what I have seen, seems like air compressor problems. maybe air governor, maybe reeds in the head. Keep up the good work Scott!!!!

    • @gtb81.
      @gtb81. 5 лет назад +2

      my bet would be the reeds letting air go through, that would explain it holding at 60 but not building up pressure afterward

    I am a retired truck driver, and I had an adapter on my main air tank and a hose with different fittings so that I could air up tires or broken down trucks . I was wondering if any of those trucks parked there had something similar to help you out . I am sure they would be happy to help you out.

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      I asked the guy next to us. He said he’s only had the truck for six months so he didn’t know if it had an air fitting on it. I said thank you, smiled and walked away shaking my head. Many Truckers just aren’t nearly as bad ass knowledge as they used to be.

    I don't know how long it takes for a bus to air up. But it just seemed to take a long time. Watching you point out the little leaks I was thinking that back in the day there was the old leaky bucket. All those little problems ie: leaks add up to a big problem ie: big leak.
