On "My Car Story" we're in Fountain Hills AZ on 1-9-22.
We're looking at a 1959 Buick LeSabre 2 Door Hardtop in Silver Birch Paint. The car comes with the factory 361 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Paul Maas. Paul’s had this car since 2015. Paul shares he has a picture and memories of his Uncles car with his Cousin sitting on it. He always liked that car. His Dad received the car, and Paul was able to drive that car. But…Dad found some beer cans in it, and sold it. Well Paul always wanted to get one just like it, and in 2015 he found this one. Congratulations Paul, your Uncle would be proud you found this one.
    ENJOY!

This was THE MOST beautiful Buick model there ever was. Without a doubt. Utterly UNIQUE.

Mr. Maas has one fine cruiser! Judging by its looks and the smooth ride, it's no surprise the original owner's family held onto it for as long as they did. Thanks, Lou!

Hi, Lou! In 1959, Buick came out not only with totally new "Delta wing" styling with those fabulous fins and those impossible to ignore cocked headlamps, but also with completely new series names across the board. The LeSabre series replaced the Special at the entry level, the Invicta took over for the Century, and the Electra and Electra 225 succeeded the Super and Roadmaster. While they were pretty bold, they did back off on the chrome quite a bit compared to the '58s. I can understand how family can influence your taste in cars. Just like Paul took after his uncle, I myself wouldn't mind having a 1961 Chevy as my grandfather did.
This is definitely one you don't get to see often. Many thanks to you and Paul for letting us see it!

Love the 1959 Buicks, such clean lines but yet so much style (never get enough of these cars). GM made quick and big changes for the 1959 lineup yet had all their divisions producing such uniquely styled cars to make 1959 a model year that is unmatched by few other years. Thanks to the owner and Lou.

    Thanks for the ride.
I owned a 58 Super & a 59 Invicta back in the day. The ratchet bumper Jack was the scariest. It took every inch to get the rear tires off the ground. The Electra 225 was even longer & scarier to get off the ground.

Funny how memories come back about cars you’ve owned. I taught my wife how to drive on a 59 Buick Invicta. When she took the exam the Officer didn’t make her parallel park, he said he couldn’t park it himself. he gave her extra credit for being brave enough just to drive it. Haha!

In passed my driving test in a 59 Cadillac. Parallel parked it perfectly with ease. Fins helped to sight the rear corners. Hard right then hard left docked it every time. I actually leaned to drive by backing out of the garage, so was skilled at driving in that direction!

Harley Earl retired in 1958 because GM mandated a 65 year old retirement age. His original plan was for GM's divisions to use warmed over 1958 designs. However, while Earl was in Europe in the summer of 1956, Bill Mitchell quashed those plans after spying on Chrysler Corporation's upcoming 1957 cars.

Very reliable car but, gas mileage was nothing to brag about. 11 or 12 miles per gallon, but it had a 21 gallon tank and gas was under 40 cents a gallon!! Reliable car, sure would like to have it back.

@@loucostabile I had to sell, last year. my beloved orange Audi A2. I had really hoped to send it back to the States when the stupid 25 year rule expired in 2025. It wasn't to be. One of the German guys who expressed an interest in buying it for his wife, had me show it to her. She took one look and said, in German of course, 'oh, no way! I'm not driving an orange car! I told you, I want a silver car!'. She was basically yelling this at her husband. Simply re-enforced my opinion that silver is far too popular, therefore, since I don't want to be like everybody else, I hate silver. But that Buick did look good in silver. I enjoy your vids....

What a gorgeous "mid-century" or "space-age" machine. They were what the American public used to want": big, roomy, luxurious riding car. What happened to turn that 180 degrees is beyond me. Interesting with the radio delete on a '59. The old timers would often leave out that and the clock. Hard to understand today.

Beautiful car and looks great in that color. Man, from the front, that car has such a mean look to it. That Buick has some really nice details and the way it starts up is really a neat feature that I never knew even existed in cars of the 50s, really cool. I really Love that the owner installed the 4 bbl and the dual exhaust even if it didn't come that way from the factory, it is his car and he can do whatever he wants to do with it and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I have to ask, what was the squeak when it is rolling along? Hopefully it is something simple to remedy. Also, I Loved the Wildcat decal on the air filter housing. When I was a kid, my Mom had a 1966 Buick Wildcat convertible that was red with red interior and a white top, loved that car and have loved cars ever since. Great Buick Lesabre!!!

Not one of my favorite Buick’s, but I can appreciate it. After the wonderful 54-56 models this must have been a shock to the dealers who had to sell these. All one has to do is look at the sales figures from 55-60 and you can see that GM went too far.

I think the recession had more to do with poor sales figures than the sculpted styling of the 59’s. You’ve got to admit, that after you strip the chrome, stainless and pot metal off the boxy body of the 53 to 58 Buicks that’s pretty much all you have left, a box. I do think it’s pretty cool that Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell stuck a chrome plated shovel on the quarter panels of the 57 Buick.

One failure and 4500 pounds of Buick could knock over an oak tree. I literally hand to stand on the brakes with both feet to make her slow down. Talking with other 59 Buick owners, they were constantly dealing with the brakes. Buick did offer power brakes in 59, but it wasn’t installed on mine. I have a hydro boost system and I works great.

@@paulmaas9199 Thank you for the kind response. I’ve owned my 59 Buick LeSabre convertible for 31 years. I agree with you about the inadequacies of the single master cylinder. I too have converted my car to a dual master.
My comment was about changing to disk brakes. I should have said that. 59 Buicks have very special finned aluminum front brake drums with cast iron liners. This design is very good for dissipating heat and avoiding the inherent brake fade of conventional drums. Buick finned aluminum drums are not only beautiful they perform so well they are sought after by hot rodders who want good brakes but don’t like the look of modern rotors and calipers on their open wheel rods.

Thank you Steve. I did keep the finned drums because I know they are rare and valuable. Mostly I kept them so I could revert back if I wanted to.

@@paulmaas9199 what are both of you fellas thoughts on Bias plies. They've never served me wrong, and adapt better on ice than modern radials surprisingly.

We go back in time to the dinosaur days and a rural road in the Puente Hills of California. Thanks mostly to Mopar for their 1957 line of low riders, GM got a wild hair up their ass to make their cars appear lower slung as well. To help effect this innovative image, GM (and several others) decided to run their rides on 14" wheels - safety be damned. 1959 Buicks were not excluded and I can guess this was a contributing factor to the wreck that was jamming traffic and getting my Mom to resort to her list of filthy roadway epithets. At the crossroads was a '59 LeSabre 4door that some lady managed to roll over into the ditch, its frontend nosed toward the sky looking pleading to the heavens. The angry canted headlights looked so odd upsidedown opposing the intended appearance. And with the flimsy A & C posts on those cars you know what happened to the roof - flattened to the beltline. I remember that 60 years later
