This is a video that I have wanted to make forever. I use the Purple Audio MC77 on every song that I produce for my clients. Vocals, Bass Guitar, Room Mics, etc! It's a great sounding compressor on a multitude of sources! The 1176 circuit has been around since 1968, its been on countless records and is a staple in music production.
In recent years, many pro audio gear manufacturers have cloned its signature sound or recreated it with their own unique upgrades and twists! The Purple MC77 has everything you love about the original 1176's with Purple's own set of features that they felt were lacking from the original design. Recently Plugin Alliance has made a fantastic plugin recreation of the MC77, and I've used it with great success in place of the hardware.
Klark Teknik is a brand that has been in the pro audio world since 1973. Klark has mostly found in racks of gear touring the world in the live sound reinforcement arena. In 2009 they were bought by Music Group. The 76-KT is Klark's offering of a very valiant budget-friendly version of the venerable 1176 compressor.
Today we shoot out these two pieces of equipment and find out if the $400 Klark can hold it's own against the mighty Purple MC77.
After we did this shootout, we decided to run a giveaway for the 76-KT. You can find a link to enter that giveaway here: www.rafflecopte...

Great review! It seems that your MC77 is more lively and active at high frequencies most of time, which makes them sound clearer than KT especially in the case of multi-track numbers.
I have used 76-KT for a while in my friend's studio. They are really good units. At least at this price, they are works like a real legecy 1176 unit.
I agree with you about MC77 is awesome, but not everyone needs to put one on the table. This will undoubtedly help people who are more care about cost-effective instead of spending too much money on some personalized improvements on tone color, hope they will see your video and share their views.Cherrs!
Thanks for the comment! I think that' a great assessment of my review. I also agree with you 100%, not everyone needs to have a top shelf 1176. The 76KT will definitely get you started with this style of compressor.
@@Matt_McQueen Hey thank you for approval. Look like Distressor EL8X is a more comprehensive choice for me. Looking forward to more videos if you have time to show their ability.Cheers!
@@陈阳-h1z noooo the distressor is not a 76. for vocals it cant touch a 76. I dont know why, on paper it should, but it just cant ymmv good lluck.
Wow! Thank you for your prompt reminder, and then I have to decide whether it is worth buying them...
The vocalist sounds like a talented sheep.
At least he's talented? IDK
Yea I don’t dig it
The compression does a hell of a job on his vocals though.
you sounds like a dumb ass
Came here for star wars, got music gear which I am also a complete nerd for.
hahahahaha!
There are definitely bigger differences between individual Urei 1176 units (which I’ve been using for the last 35 years) than between these two. The slightest breath of eq on either unit would make these subtleties inaudible. The KT is a killer clone at any price, the size of the market for units like the Purple just reduced to people who are desperate to hear a difference to justify their investment.
I would love to get my hands on an original.
Great Information and Shootout Jeff, I really Liked the KT-76
Right on
The purple is smooth. The klark seems like it's gives it's a high-end boost where it makes the vocals SUPER crisp and would need some deessing.
I agree!
The KT is driving it harder with harmonic reverb when its at max compression, while the purple keeps things more controlled at max compression with much less harmonic reverb. So if you're not going to drive the KT76 that hard it nails the sound at a fraction of the cost.
my thoughts exactly. For most of your normal uses - the KT76 does a great job. It doesn't really fall apart at the higher settings or more extreme settings, but that is where you start to notice the limits(pun intended) of its abilities.
Purple is better obviously! BUT A BIG FAT BUT for the price tag holy cow if the KT isn’t a good contender.
dang right. I was so surprised.
I've been looking at these 76-KT units and the LA-2A ones they do for some time now. I think as an introduction to outboard gear they sound great, that'll definitely be my next purchase! That and GAP 1073 ha! Great video as always guys, keep them up! \m/
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this! Would love to use this in my home studio on my vocals 😊
No problem!
Kt falls apart when pushed. Purple stayed smooth. Thats how to tell cheap from high end.
I've been making records professionally for over a decade and love the KT76, it's just a really great piece.
It really is great!
Yes. I'm the same ....almost.
Funny how behringer always gets the cold shoulder from everyone….But ever time there’s a shoot out they always “surprise “ everyone…or they just come out on top.
Hi, great review, I wanted to download the files, but the link doesn't work, how can I get them? Thanks
I have to wonder how much justice is really done to either box at the end of the day when it all gets dumped to youtube.
I've rewatched this from youtube via my control room since filming it and I can say that the differences, though subtle are not so subtle that you lose them on youtube.
I’m listening to this in my phone lol.
I do this all the time lol. I should probably listen on my monitors for these kinds of videos but RUclips is a phone thing for me.
Dew itt!
Great explaining no BS great attitude thanks
Awesome video. I'm surprised at the Klark. I expected the purple to sound good but the Klark definitely surprised me
Yeah, its definitely punching above it's price point
Cool comparison video 🤘
Thanks! 👍
Really did enjoy this honest review of the 2 units. Would love to see you do one with the KT LA2A and another LA2A. Btw was this a promoted video? This came up as an AD and totally clicked cause I've been looking for someone to do a review like this of the KT 76
ChrisSound I’m looking into that.
Capsule to Cone Yup, this video showed up as an ad for me as well, but it’s how I discovered your channel. You got a new sub out of it! Great review.
ironic your VO audio is Atrocious over the top.
Wow, super close! Interesting that you thought you heard more low end from the Purple. I swear I kept hearing more low end from the KT.
Maybe I was having an off day! Thanks for watching Caleb!
Yeah, the KT had more low mids
Realy love the song. Unfortunately I couldn`t find it online. Sorry to ask, but do you have a link for me?
Anyway realy good video! Thanks you.
The Klark sounds fantastic for the money. Though it adds some hi-ish mud for me which will get harsh fast used on multiple tracks.
The MC77 feels to have way more headroom and sounds more natural in comparison. Imagine rendering background vocals of 10 to 20 tracks trough them. The purple will win hard.
Here’s the link, thanks for watching the video!

I’m about buy a 1176 purple audio or universal audio... I really don’t know witch one should I get since a lot engineer say that UA can’t really replicate there own original hardware and that the purple audio is the closest to the original one and best clone yet!!! Witch one should I get?
Get the Purple!
Everytime I search on youtube for how to arrange your song I don't finde anything. I wonder why nobody makes videos about that. It is the most important step isn.t it. But do you have some tips to get good arrangements for your song. I love what you are doing keep up the good work!!
I think that's a great idea. I am definitely interested in putting together some content for this soon.
For years I've been deliberating whether or not to buy the real 1176. Every time something sounds close to it I get excited and think, perhaps this is it. Perhaps I don't have to go all out and buy it. But erm, the real thing still kicks all the wannabes ass. Damn!
It really does!
The settings between both units at 7:30 differ a lot, especially the Output is higher on the Klark which makes the Purple sounding smoother.
I think the purple just sounds smoother because it is a better unit. The Klark does have 1176 vibes but you can't set the knobs the same at all. The gain reduction you get is drastically different if you try to set the knobs exactly the same.
Great review, I'd love to have the Purple but seeing as the difference really shows when under pressure I don't think I could justify it for my music. I am a fan of tracking with ballpark compression and EQ so I'm thinking the KT and the Warm are what I'm choosing between as my compressor upgrade.
Thanks for watching!
Also came here for Star Wars. Stayed for the sexy. Would love to add to my home studio!
You were my hero when I was a kid.
I don't know when stand alone preamps became the "big thing", but I would assume it happened in the late 1980's. Why? Rupert Neve perhaps. Or was it when Tascam and the other -10 level recording gear hit the market and they were relatively cheap. That line of recording gear may have benifited with a high end (high price) preamp, but what about the other high end manufacturers? API, SSL and Trident. In 1994, a woman called me in my studio and asked me if I had Neve preamps. I told her no, and she immedately hung up on me. No problem, as I had more customers than I could handle. I was using a Tangent console into an Ampex 24 track, and not one other customer ever brought up the name Neve. I still own the Tangent and use it eveyday, the past 30 years later. The preamps in the console are stock and sound great, although I have had to do a number of repairs the past 12 months. But after the woman called me about Neve preamps I stated looking in to the subject and actually fell under the spell of the "high end" (hgih priced) preamps. One of my customer also fell into the spell of the "expensive gear sounded bette", and he brought in his onw Neuman mic and his own expensive preamp. He thought it sounded better, but I couldn't tell the differnce. But perhaps my ears not good enough. So I wnt out and bough a brand new Focusrite Red 7 preamp. Sorry I don't hear any diference between my Tangent and the Focusrite. But I use it for all the vocals, and bass guitar. Why? Because I spent $3200.00 on the unit, not because it sounds better. Just my opinon, but if you have a decent console you don't need an expensive preamp. .
Great comments Matt, especially appreciated your thoughts on who the KT 76 would be best suited for. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Is $1300 more, worth that little of a difference......
Great question! If this is your first compressor, I would say, maybe not!
The KT76 has an upper mid boost that would be super nice in a dense mix. The Purple absolutely slays though in ABI though, not contest there. Thanks for an awesome comparison video!
Welcome!
I’m so tempted to buy a 1176 clone (probably hairball or purple) just because I love the noise it produces lmao!
These are really good! I would go for the purple if you can afford it!
@@Matt_McQueen Thank you! I’ll definitely look into it. I was able to snag a B-stock UA1176 for 1.3 but I would love a purple 😊
I like the 20:1 better
I thought I was the only one. Sounds awesome In the mix. From what I remember in Pro tools, You can always lower the breath volumes a bit to make them sound less intrusive.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
the plugin version of the purple 77 is my fav plugin ever
It's a great plugin.
I really dont hear any real quality difference. Headphones on and close my eyes and can not hear when they change over.
So to me that's good enough.
Good video. Thank you.
7:18 There is no comparison between these two IMO. I am using a pair of HD58X and a RME ADI-DAC FS ESS Drivers.
Just found your channel, great stuff man! This was a great comparison, I’m extremely impressed with the performance of the KT. Would almost go as far as to say I quite enjoyed the upper mid / top end boost it employed, however it still doesn’t touch the beef of the purple. Certainly a budget friendly option I’ll be considering for my little set up :)
Thank you so much! And yup! You definitely could get useable great sounding results from the KT, but the Purple is definitely better for multiple reasons.
I hear the opposite what others hear lol! I feel the klark is darker while the Purple has that upper-mid push that cuts through the mix better. I've had the klark since it came out (it was a lot cheaper than it is today) but in this video I like the purple more. As long as you don't crank the input on the klark it sounds good, the purple just sounds amazing even with the input maxed.
The purple is so smooth. Holy cow.
It really is a fantastic compressor!
Thank you so much, subscribed... great content man!
Thanks for the sub!
Sounds pretty similar to me. Great vid 🎉🎉🎉
Do you have issues with negative latency when running hardware inserts in PT??
Well done! We need more “boring gear” shoot outs. People under estimate the importance of transient fidelity and this was a great casual detailing of that listening/thought process!
Well done! Did you think of that all by yourself? Or did you holler upstairs from your mom's basement and ask her for help formulating that opinion?
Capsule to Cone uh... dude I wasn’t trying to be mean. I genuinely appreciated the video. That’s why I said “boring gear” cuz to some new comers, these utilities aren’t flashy or exciting. I subbed to your channel even, after viewing. I’m not trying to trash you at all bro! - edited for spelling.
Sauce_Aux my bad dude! So sorry! I was like, why’d this guy watch it if it was boring. So I fired back. But thanks for clearing it up and again, sorry about that! Thanks for the sub!
Capsule to Cone hahaha all good! I know how it can be. The vid was, in no way, boring! Great shoot out!
Can I ask what year your Purple is, ballpark?
how would you compare the UA1176 to the mc77?
Thanks
No problem
Wow... Nice vid.. Not as smooth, the purple just takes those, crunchy hi's out nicely....
Yeah, the purple is for sure better, But crazy how close the Klark is.
My mc77 sounds better (smoother and less distortion) than my 1972 Urei silverface
Thanks for watching!
The purple for sure sounds rounder and smoother. The KT sounds a bit harsh. There is a 6-8k bump in there it seems. My MC77 comes Thursday. I've been strung out on purple plugin and finally broke down and bought a OG one.
They are great! Enjoy it!
The purple seems rounder in general. The KT seems to distort quicker than the purple
Yeah, I agree with that!
Purple audio all day... you can throw the other one away lol. Oh shit I rhymed!
AJ Afterparty I definitely think the purple is the best of the 2, but I for sure wouldn’t throw the Klark away. It definitely is compressing and doing the 1176 thing.
Capsule to Cone I’m half kidding, I really dislike low quality gear. It’s very displeasing to the ear. Music is something that’s supposed to be magical when heard. And just for argument sake if you were to say distortion or tube saturation for example is compromising the integrity of signal. There’s still something very pleasant about what high quality pieces of gear do where it still sounds musical. They were made by people who cared about their craft and not to fit a certain price point. Hope you understand what I’m saying. Anyway that’s just my two cents. Keep rocking!
whats the song's name?
Well this is rare....I agree with everything you said about the K-T. I am looking at it & a few other K-T pieces, so this vid was posted at the perfect time, Thank You!
I'm glad you agreed! Did you see we are giving it away! Sign up if you're interested and good luck! What other KT pieces are you looking at
It’s 3AM and for a moment, looking at the thumbnail, I thought he was gonna review some 4 million $ compressor
Vincent Duguay and then you realized you should probably go to bed, because even a vintage Fairchild doesn’t cost $4,000,000 let alone exist.
I’m curious about how these compare to plugins overall . I have heard analog can be a lil faster and can be pushed harder but if I don’t over compress than maybe an analog is just fine
They all do something a little different. The one thing I think that happens with analog compressors is that you can actaully go harder with them with the sound becoming overbaked.
Right haven’t seen the video or read the comments but let me guess; cheap unit sounds really good and represents great value for money, but the more expensive shades it in a direct comparison and is ultimately the professional choice - why bother watching these types of clips, they’re just ads for the guy making em
Great insight. There was no reason for you to come to youtube today. Delete your account, watch cooking shows with your granny on Hulu instead.
@@Matt_McQueen lol
Daz Boot all in good fun pal! Have a good one!
Great review! BTW great song and good mix!
Thanks for watching!
what's the name of this track you were working on ?
loved the video, thank you for the great content
The band is called Robinson Park, they are from Knoxville, TN. The song is called "I'm Alone". Thanks for watching!
Great stuff. Right now from Sweetwater the kt 76 is on sale for $299.
That's a great deal!
@@Matt_McQueen I've never used an original 1176, but the kt76 really does a good job controlling the dynamics. It's one of my favorites. Might pick up a black lion bluey or seventeen f.e.t. compressor.
I love seeing the comparison between different audio equipment on different price ranges.
Yeah, the difference is usually not that big. However, I always think, in a song where I am recording 50-75 tracks, those little differences have to add up.
They were BEAUTIFUL when you drove the input. Loved that
Yeah that was pretty fun!
So when does this song come out?
It's out - check it here: open.spotify.com/album/2z4VZceEOe0sDSWEW7TySV
Thanks for the video, loved the song!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you test a Distressor compressor?
I plan to! I have a couple Not really anything to shoot it out against. But I can show you what I like to use mine for.
3:52 I saw that switch hehe. :}
Took me a few times. Ha.
Haha! Good eye.
Great comparison and fair analysis :) Looking forward to more videos. Cheers!
Thanks a ton!
Yer eyes.
No, yer eyes, bro!
The best demo!
thanks for watching!
Are those sceptres pretty sick as mains?
I really like them. At this point, they are what I am used to. I would like to try other speakers but my opinion is that after 5 years I am used to these and know them pretty well. One I would like to try some others, but right now, the scepters and the Ns10s do it for me.
Capsule to Cone Thanks a lot for the reply 🤘🏼
Great thumbnail idea!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice review.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the demo.
Yes of course! It was a really fun video to make!
Song?
Pandaz the song from the demonstration is I’m Alone from Robinson Park
Finally hahah
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm broke. Starving artist. So thank you for saving me money
You're Welcome!
The slammed setting on vox was super revealing. There was an obvious difference, more than I expected. Purple had more clarity but not like... high end air. Great video!
Yeah, you're right! Thanks for watching!
That's where the differences are most notable with gear and plugins. You have to test the extremes to really see where a device shines, or falls apart.
purple sounds like my waves plug in.. the klark is a lil tinny
I can assure you it's not tinny in real life , not even close
Like the waves? What's wrong with your ears?
Thanks for watching!
The Hairball Audio Rev D (Black) 1176 can’t be beat at $599 but you have to build it yourself.
Hub Location Sound that’s why I’ve never been Interested in one to be honest. I just don’t wanna build one. I’ve done enough soldering on this console to last me a lifetime! Hahaha
@@Matt_McQueen I hear ya. Will say though... the last studio I was in had a Universal 1176 and Mohog 1176, and the engineers preferred the DIY Hairball Rev D kit. It just had some special something to it.
@@HubLocationSound don't get me wrong, I would love to try one. I have heard folks rave about them. I just don't wanna build it! but maybe one day I will.
@@Matt_McQueen the hairball does not beat the purple, I have both, the purple is the closest to the real deal even than ua reboot
Advert alert
I paid for the compressor out of my own pocket and am putting ad money behind it to grow the channel and make sure as many people as possible get to enter the giveaway! Every youtuber does it.
