This is probably the best "sound video" on RUclips! Awesome musicians, good gain matching of the examples, no inaccurate or misunderstood information, a good signal path, an interesting history lesson and no craving for e-mail addresses :D It's perfect! Thank you for making this!
Hey Lennart, thanks so much for your comment, that really means a lot. We put a lot of time into that video, so it’s nice when someone picks up on the details. Thanks very much!
Finally, an audio channel that doesn't take itself so seriously, and isn't so drenched in suggested marketing/advertising that I want to execute myself (let's hope I haven't spoken too soon, only seen a few vids). Subbed.
Just found your channel. The knowledge shared is very helpful, the editing is great, and humor is hilarious. I wish I would have found your channel way sooner. 👏🏼
A Huge Thanks to you, my guy! That kind of comparison was extremely, very much appreciated! My favorite was the KT-76. And for plug ins, I was impressed with the MC-76.
I had been looking for an 1176 for months but after this video I was convinced to buy the Klark Teknik 76-kt. It really sounded as good as the far more expensive units. Great video! Thank you.
Excellent shoutout! Silverface as some character, I never thought the Purple Audio could be that gritty when pushed to the limits. And putting the price aside, the KT is an excellent one I really liked it on the snare with a very good overall frequency balance. Can't wait for the LA2A shoutout. thanks
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. LA2A coming soon... the vintage original is broken, so just trying to get that sorted. Damn analogue gear! 😝
The drums really showed that; silver face smashed that. I liked it on the guitar and bass too. Though on the guitar I thought the black face had a thicker, smoother more pleasing sound. But, I think mostly that was just the effect it had on tone shaping, than the compression.
WONDERFUL JOB. I can’t imagine the amount of thought and hours that went into this. Thank you so very much for doing what I always wanted someone to do...line up a bunch of dif units and switch between them w the same material. So freakin simple in idea...SO complicated and consuming to actually execute. THANK YOU and congrats on a job WELL DONE.
My personal all around favourite is the purple audio. Not only is it relatively affordable, it sounds great, distorts properly amd musically, and is easily available compares to the original units. Would be my go to for high end analog 1176 sounds. If I could find a pair though, the Rev D were to die for as a great all around choice
Stellar work here! Super professional in all aspects, history intro, almost perfect level matching, pro musicians' quality, file download...thanks a lot for the hard work and hope you reach hundreds of thousands of subscribers by next year! Def deserved

How could I miss that?! It's a Netflix production actually, right? About my favorite topic - gear shootout. Absolutely amazing! I think I should move to the UK, if there are more people like you and your fantastic musicians. THANK YOU!
After listening to these comparisons, i think im going to try the Klark Teknik. Its the only one i can afford. Lol. But it sounds really good, as long as u dont get a defective product. From all the reviews ive seen on any of the Klark Teknik products they are hit or miss due to bad quality control, but im willing to take the risk. They sound fantastic when its a properly functioning unit.
Really well done! We live in a golden age of clones. The first mix demonstrations were so useful.... and awesome mixes on top of that. Very functional demo of all these. Glad I copped the Klarks and didn’t spend way more money on an original..
Hey, thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you’ve got some KTs, they’re so good for the money. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and watching our vids, much appreciated 😎
Is it me or did the Slate comp sound terrible on many of these examples? I listened to this on a tv with a decent soundbar first then checked it on my KRKs. I don't mean to slam on Slate--I have never tried their plugins. Overall very interesting shoot-out I'm really liking PresentDayProductions! Keep up the good work!
Maybe they shouldn't have used the Slate's Monster for this, but their actual 1176 emulation. Slate might have taken their freedom with the Monster, deviating more from a faithful emulation than they might otherwise have done.
Yeah odd, the first thing I thought to comment on is ‘what’s up with Slate?’, then saw this comment immediately at the top… …maybe he dialed the exact settings between clones when Slate is setup differently for some reason…? (Sounded ‘whack’ in a bad way, but volume sometimes was off as well as tonality). & To be fair, I’ve never tried Slate plugins either.
it seems the KTs don't have quite the same exact parameters for attack speed as the higher priced boys. It seems like its just not able to go quite as fast
Owen Murphy The attack time is variable from 20-800 microseconds, so on paper it certainly stacks up, but it does sound slightly behind the original units on grabbing those transients.
The Purple Audio shines in high mid stuff like vocals and guitars. The Hairball was the most balanced with the Urei D version. The Urei H was the most mojo of them all. KT was quite tasteless, but surprisingly it felt better than the UA. The Waves distortion was nice in parts but was lacking high end definition. The Slate was just not good.
Hey 🌞 The waffling is the only reason I come to watch ♥️. Pls keep doing this videos it is so much knowledge for us who are really digging into this with a jounger age. The value of this content is incredible 🌿🙏🏻 Cheers form Germany
In the mix comparison I had a liking for the Hairball over all the others for some reason I couldn't quite put my finger on. Then on the isolated track with the gain all the way up I figured it out; the ratio of coloration seems to be perfect for my preferences compared to the others. Except for bass, I liked the purple best. Very interesting differences overall. Great work guys!
I'm not one for gushing comments, but this is a really fantastic video. Wonderful information and background, Incredible musicians, proper engeneering and a very effective test. You're a fantastic presenter and the editing and the general video production is excellent. Love it!
I am SO happy that I have found your channel. Amazing videos, even better personalities from you guys! A true gem on youtube. - Thank you! Best Regards Thomas
Fantastic demo! The low end and over all loudness was quite less in the plugins, compared to the hardware. Is it possible to bring the sound and perceived loudness of the plugin sound equal to the hardware by adding in the low end, using analog eqs in the the mixing and mastering stage and saturation to increase the loudness of the instrument ?
I have 4 v.H 76s and a same vintage stereo 78. I purchased all five units for $800 from two sources. The 76s are nicely consistent, sound great with zero effort. They are so-so reliable, but a breeze to maintain on my own. To me, they are for vocal and guitar, period, where they are truly magic. Drums and bass love the LA-4 and 5, almost laughable how perfect they sound on kick and snare with 5 seconds of setup. They are becoming so valuable I will probably sell them as I now work strictly in the box. I will miss them for sure. They are the first things visitors see, such is their rep. That is very valuable, but not $16K valuable to me. Some buyer will treasure them, perfectly restored as they are.
@@MaggieKeizai probably it's just the UA brand heritage that brings the people think to buy something good. But here the differences are pretty remarkable. I don't think it is acceptable for a vintage hardware replica don't produce almost any kind of distortion, peculiar of the original units. There's definitely something wrong
Thanks for taking on the Herculean task of doing this shoot out. It should've gotten about 10 times the views. Interesting how different the various revisions reacted to each instrument. Obviously, it would be nice to have a silverface (was offered by a friend to buy one at the going rate, but declined), but for overall compression tasks, I was happy with the UA reissue - it retained a nice amount of headroom in all tests.
AMAZING Video btw. 1 fun addition to consider for future videos, at the end include the whole mix and flip between the different mixes using each compressor across each track. Much like preamp demos, you really hear the bigger effect when you hear the entire mix with everything tracked and stacked up working together. One might have a nice mid-range clarity in solo, but cumulatively across the mix it could create an unwanted mid bump across the whole mix. Edit, after listening some more you can hear that the hairball has a bit more low mid push and different level of color/distortion, so I would love to hear hairball across all tracks vs the KT to see if the mix is more muddy or just adding subtle thickness.
fantastic video, went above and beyond with the amount of gear + found myself wanting to listen to the history and not skip ahead to the shootout. instant subscribe, cheers!
I have a Hairball DIY 1176 which I love, but I have to say that Klark Teknik sounds very much like it (almost identical with maybe a tiny bit less bottom end). I'm pleasantly surprised.
I downloaded the drums and vocals so far and the only difference i can hear between Revision D and H (silver face) is the volume is slightly lower on D, but the tone is the same. The two units are so close but the price difference is pretty big
Fantastic comparison. Thank for you going through the barmy effort to put together such a video. All I can afford's the KT, but I'll say that you can bypass the compression on the KT by only lightly pressing one of the ratio buttons, switching them all off. The Rev H has a lovely attack on the snare.
very very very nice comparison! i recently bought a kt 76 however i think is possible to bypass compression stage. To do this, i select a compression ratio and i "soft press" another ratio. In this way the original compression ratio kick out and the new isn't kicked in. I'm not a electronic engineer so i'm not sure, but i think you can bypass compression stage in this way. Normally i use this "trick" to overload input transformer and saturate sound. Anyway, nice video and channel man! Greetings from Italy
Hi Andrea, thanks for watching! Since recording this, we found out how to bypass the compression, and you’re right, it’s done exactly like you explained. Maybe we’ll do a follow up some time! Thanks for watching our videos. :)
My immediate thought before reading your reply, being an electronics engineer with FCC credentials. No buttons in = no compression. Thanks for confirming that!
I have an RNC compressor that's extremely neutral amd extremely fast... I wonder how it would sound to use the RNC to round out the peaks, then into the Klark for the color / fatness...
I was expecting based on other videos that the KT-76 would be an obvious loser. But actually I preferred it to most except for the silverface...which is incredible.
the low end is really good, but it has some not so pretty artifacts up above. It's a helluva unit for the price but how it sounds is what will cost you if you don't really listen.
I ran my Softube VC76 through all the raw files then compared them to the other 1176's and to my surprise it really held its own sounding like the Rev D and hairball and silver face depending on how you set things. I was hoping to buy an 1176 clone but now I might just stick with the plugin
That's giving me some hope for plugins. The CLA76 and the Slate were really behind in this comparison. It's good to hear some developers are actually caring. :)
People gush about UAD so much, but I feel like Softube is one of the best plugin DSP designers out there. I am uninformed and totally guessing, but I'm guessing Softube helps develop plugins for other companies as well since they have the resources and skills.
The Silverface, the Hairball and the Klark added something really nice to the low end in the full mix, love it! Will defintely get 2 or 3 of the Klarks now :D
Oh, the irony of the wah-inventor working on the LN rev , when wah circuits are the noisiest of the noisy with the mostly-naked inductor coil attracting any and every stray EM signal in the room!
Not sure did anyone mentioned this already in the comments below but you can run just the amplification stage on all the Slate's FG-116 by holding shift and clicking on the attack knob. Thought it might be useful...
This was an excellent shout out. Great vid! The Silverface was the winner to my ears individually, overall on the mix though, I liked the reissue the best. I also liked the Purple on the individual tracks. The reissue sounded cleaner overall though.
This video is amazing. I've been trying to allow myself the luxury of adding a Purple MC77 to my home studio, and that research got me here. If I had the cash, I'd probably try to score a UREI Silverface Rev H. But that's way outta range. But a Purple MC77 is somewhat doable, and I've read tons of great reviews of them. Anyone here have a Purple MC 76 or MC77? Love it? Recommend it?
We love the Purple unit. It can do subtle and warm really well, but also crunchy and aggressive. That and the Hairball were two of our favourites in this shootout. Thanks for watching!
@@PresentDayProductionI've actually narrowed it down to the Purple or the Hairball (assembled) actually. So you saying that makes it easier and harder to decide :) If the Hairball is THAT good, then why spend twice as much on a Purple? But, I've intentionally curated a really nice array of gear for myself as a self-recording musician; Classic Ludwig Kit, British made AC15 w/Alnico Blue, a 70's Sound City, and BAE 1073, API 550 DI, Trident EQ's. so I feel like I shouldn't cut corners on the one high end compressor I'll ever buy or need. So, please push me towards the Purple :D
Thank you for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it - we’ve got lots more in the pipeline! Check out our Pultec EQ shootout as well if you haven’t already done so x
I've got a Polish made IGS "Volfram Limiter" which is an amazing sounding dual 1176 style compressor. Worth checking out, though there aren't a lot of demos on RUclips.
Hello. Just saw this video and I loved it! Thanks for it, it’s the best way to hear these things, very well done. Just one suggestion: in each cycle it would be nice to hear the dry signal also.
Ehm, why you only have 12+K followers? This channel is so underrated. Seen a few vids already, and they are great, PS the Purple Audio is my favorite limiter. It is dirtier than the others, the plugin, because, because the hardware is too expensive.
Completely agree on the silver face; where the drums really showed it up. I preferred the black face on the guitar section though, had a pleasing thickening, but rounding off of the treble. I quite liked the purple on the snare. It almost sounded like a breakbeat sampled at low bitrate off a crunchy master on dusty old vinyl.

Not even Universal Audio can replicate they own hardware!!! That silver face is awesome. I think the purple one the closest.
Agreed - the reissue sounds dull.
Fantastic comparison. Thank for you going through the barmy effort to put together such a video. All I can afford's the KT, but I'll say that you can bypass the compression on the KT by only lightly pressing one of the ratio buttons, switching them all off. The Rev H has a lovely attack on the snare.
Thanks for the kind words Harvey! Yeah, a few people have pointed that out with the KT... I should have read the manual... what an amateur! 😎
@@PresentDayProduction I should've checked the comments sorry!
Harvey Rothman Haha, no worries! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
I can’t find anything about bypassing the 76-KT in the manual? I’ll try what you suggested
very very very nice comparison! i recently bought a kt 76 however i think is possible to bypass compression stage.
Thanks for this trick! 👍
Thank you for this!
My immediate thought before reading your reply, being an electronics engineer with FCC credentials. No buttons in = no compression. Thanks for confirming that!
was already excited about hearing all these 1176s and then you went and got some of Mamas Gun playing! Love it
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing quality! Thanks for the video!
Glad you enjoyed it! We’ll keep em coming!
I have an RNC compressor that's extremely neutral amd extremely fast...
I wonder how it would sound to use the RNC to round out the peaks, then into the Klark for the color / fatness...
This channel really is wonderful, cool people just talking about audio stuff. Laid back
Awesome video! Congrats!
I was expecting based on other videos that the KT-76 would be an obvious loser. But actually I preferred it to most except for the silverface...which is incredible.
Yep, agreed. The bass especially showed this off.
KT 76 was great. I'd probably get the Hairball Audio for psychological reasons that its handmade even though it may not necessarily sound better
that's what i thought! silverface was gorgeous but kt76 was 85% as good
the low end is really good, but it has some not so pretty artifacts up above. It's a helluva unit for the price but how it sounds is what will cost you if you don't really listen.
Just discovered your channel: love it! Super good shootouts, super level matching, realistic settings. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching, welcome on board!
you folks are awesome! thanks for doing these great videos!
I was about to skip the explanation but 3:37 made me change my mind.
Its amazing how different they sound between cheap and expensive. To my ears, the UREI , UA LN and Purple versions are the best.
Glad I clicked. Top notch video here .. subbing!
Thank you!
Impressive comparison. I would also choose different unit for different instrument.
The Silverface, the Hairball and the Klark added something really nice to the low end in the full mix, love it! Will defintely get 2 or 3 of the Klarks now :D
Well played one and all 👏🏻 Loving all of the execution in this video. Please make more!
Oh, the irony of the wah-inventor working on the LN rev , when wah circuits are the noisiest of the noisy with the mostly-naked inductor coil attracting any and every stray EM signal in the room!
Brilliant video !!!
Not sure did anyone mentioned this already in the comments below but you can run just the amplification stage on all the Slate's FG-116 by holding shift and clicking on the attack knob. Thought it might be useful...
Thanks Radek :)
Great video, thanks! If you don't press the ratio buttons then you can run audio through the Klark Teknik without compressing the signal.
Thanks for the info, Stefan! I should have read the manual before we shot the video haha! Oops...
@@PresentDayProduction No worries, who reads manuals! :)
@@PresentDayProduction hehe :) pesky manuals!!
This is really really good! Thank you so much! We need more like this on RUclips
Thank you for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it - we’ve got lots more in the pipeline! Check out our Pultec EQ shootout as well if you haven’t already done so x
Your videos are ACE guys thank you!
Thank you Dan! Thanks for watching!
Amazing video. Thank you so much!
On the Slate plugin, you can bypass the compression and just have the gain. It is shift or command, can't recall, but it can be done!
Ehm, why you only have 12+K followers? This channel is so underrated. Seen a few vids already, and they are great, PS the Purple Audio is my favorite limiter. It is dirtier than the others, the plugin, because, because the hardware is too expensive.
We’re growing thanks to our subscribers! We had 3,000 subs 2 weeks ago so it’s growing, thanks for subscribing!
Great job, guys!
Urei Blackface Rev D took them all for me.
