Get Your Seat Height Right

- Is your bicycle seat adjusted to the correct height? If your bicycle seat is too high or too low, you could be losing efficiency or causing discomfort in your knees. Here's a quick and easy way to make sure your bicycle seat is adjusted to the right height.
I can still remember the owners' manual that came with my 1972 Schwinn Collegiate, and it gave the exact same advice and technique to measure and adjust seat height and listed the same drawbacks to a poorly adjusted seat.
Thanks Paul for the good advice. You help a great deal to make this sport more enjoyable.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. That was always the quick and easy way that I always heard to adjust the seat. It's just good "old school" wisdom. There's no school like the old school. Ride on!
Good demo Paul ! Happy trails this summer ! Where ya headed ?
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I was out touring in Illinois and Wisconsin. Unfortunately I got interupted. Working on some new videos now. Stay safe out there! Hope to see you down the road. Ride on!
I always look forward to your videos; they're informative, useful, easy to follow -- and you're just plain charismatic. Keep them coming, please.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe out there!
new subscriber, I only watched a few videos but each one was good, informative without wasting time, plus you got jokes
hey I heard you say you are from Illinois in one of your videos. Do you still live in Illinois? I'm from Kankakee
Yesterday I pedaled up to Joliet and got on the I&M canal trail and slept near Channahon. I'm going to bike the grand Illinois trail
thanks for making these videos, it's good content
Thanks for the sub! I grew up in the NW suburbs of Chicago. But now I live in deep southern Illinois, around Carbondale. I have rode parts of the I&M canal. Part of a great trail system in northern Illinois. I ride on the weekends at the Tunnel Hill trail, an awesome rail trail here in southern Illinois. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe out there and Ride on!
Brilliant. Everything a beginner needs to know to get their seat height spot on. And explained in a simple manner. If you are not sure whether you are rocking side to side get a friend to cycle behind you and they will easily see if you are. Even the smallest amount will be obvious to them..
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Took my daughter to orientation for JCHS. Was so very upset to have missed you. Got super excited to see your name outside your classroom still. I thought for sure you had retired. You won't have her this year, but I told her to not embarrass me with Mrs. Patrick. Alicia is definitely her own rare breed. 😬🤦🏻🤣
That is awesome! Sorry I missed you. This is my last year at JCHS, I'll be retiring at yhe end of the school year. Take it easy!! 😎
Thanks for another adventure.
Thanks again!
Great advice.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!😎
Paul, because of your enthusiasm, I am going to try bike touring this June. I will be riding from DC to Pittsburgh on the C&O and GAP trails.
Have fun! I can't think of a better trail for a first bike-packing trip. Stay safe and ride on!!
Your videos are helping me 🙏
Glad to hear that. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe out there.
This is awesome advice mate. Thanks for posting and take care from Australia 👍
No problem 👍Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Greetings from the USA!!
Awesome tutorial. I’ve been trying to figure this out!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
This is very helpful.
Thanks again, Bro'.
Great upload. This is so important. I realised some time ago. The difference even half an inch can make. Great channel subbed.
Thanks I really appreciate it. Wrong seat height can make biking pretty uncomfortable. A little adjustment goes a long way. Thanks again and ride on!!
Thanks man
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.
You'r absolutely right. Not every rider knows the right height
Gotta get that seat height close at least. Otherwise it can get uncomfortable. No need for that. Thanks again for watching!
This is a great video on this! Howdy from southern Illinois! Looking forward to more videos.
Thanks Shawn. I really appreciate it! More to come. Stay safe out there.
THANKS!! I never know if my seat is right. This is Great .
Happy to help! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Ride on!
thank you for making it so easy ! 1 week for departing on my on trip and im starting to doubt everything, you have no idea how much this video helped me.
Have fun! Thanks for watching! You can do it !! Stay safe out there and ride on!!
Thanks for the wisdom. A friend of mine tried to raise based on sight but I noticed that I was getting tired. So with your video, I noticed I had to put it higher a little more. I'm a new subscriber... This is the algorithm video that RUclips suggested to me.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
@@paulsuchecki3985 My pleasure
Great video Paul! Seat height is soooo important! Especially over long touring distances! Even millimetres (we ride in Hamilton Ontario Canada) can make all the difference, so don't be afraid to be finicky!!
Very true! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Ride on!
Paul, excellent video! I especially appreciate the three versions of too low, just right and too high. I keep going back and watching this part.
Thank this must have taken time for you both to film and edit. Great info. Thank you🚲
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe out there. Ride on!
DUDE! Thank you for this! I recently had a bike fitting, at the cost of $180 (which everyone said was a great price) and this was more helpful.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
Excellent
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
I run a dropper post on my bike to adjust the height on the fly. It's great for descending to help you tuck in tight and let gravity do its trick and I also like to drop the saddle just a bit if I'm feeling tired or the road is particularly rough. It's much easier to mount your bike with the saddle lowered as well. Try one out and I promise you''l find it useful in many situations.
Good stuff! Sorry for the slow response. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
Paul! I know this comment is not about the video, but I just wanted tosee how you are doing after your crash? Are you better? A number of us are hoping you are well. Looking forward to more videos of your bicycling adventures. We are thankful for all you have taught us about bicycle touring!
Andrew, Thank you so much. Sorry about the delayed response. I did have a crash this summer while out touring. I broke my arm. My legs are still good, It could've been worse. Sorry I can't give out a lot of details. I've been working on some videos, getting ready to post soon. Thanks for sticking with me. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Good advice, also, you should put your foot on the pedal with the ball of your foot centered with the center spindel of pedal. I see a bunch of people pedaling with there foot on the pedal itself wrong
.
Thanks for watching. Stay safe out there!
Paul, did you do some riding over the summer? We really love your videos and are anxiously awaiting some new ones from you! I hope you are well and safe out there on the road. I've had some close calls myself. Too many drivers are distracted, especially young people texting on their phones while driving.
Yes I did. I'm working on some videos. Coming soon! I know exactly what you mean by distracted drivers. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
I've been trying to tell others this very thing for years. No one listens. They're mostly too low.
Sorry about the slow response. Been out biking. Thanks for watching. I see a lot of people with their seat adjusted poorly. Most often, too low. Stay safe and ride on!
My seat was too low for the start of my tour (assembled bike in airport) and it resulted in an Achilles‘ tendon issue that was hard to manage. After raising the seat up to the proper height and taking some rest days things got a lot better and I completed the three weeks worth of riding in good shape.
Ouch! Gotta get the seat height right. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe out there and ride on!!
Paul! Where have you been?! We've been worried sick. 😄
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'll be posting a video or 2 soon. I did have a little crash this summer. Still recovering. But I will be OK. Thanks for sticking with me.😎
When are we going to get some awesome new Paul touring videos?
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I was out touring in Illinois and Wisconsin this summer. Unfortunately I got interupted. Working on some new videos now. Stay safe out there! Hope to see you down the road. Ride on!
@@paulsuchecki3985 where in Wisconsin? We did Door County and the weather was wonderful!
@@bcaruthers7674 From Milwaukee to LaCrosse. Mostly rail trails.
Mine was to high and gave knee pain after about 8 miles...moved down just 3/4" and no pain...
G'day Paul, I'd love to sit down with you and have a chat about being out on the road, because my typing really sucks. I've been interested in bike touring for twenty years, from the first time I saw a youtube clip on the subject it's pretty much been the only thing on my bucket list. To the point, 15 years ago I completely rebuilt an old Shogun and fitted it with all the racks and bags and everything I'd need to be self reliant on my bike to hopefully take me anywhere I wanted to go, Only to sell the lot to a really nice bloke who was kind enough to send me a postcard from somewhere in the Ande's before I'd even rode it 50 Km's. Being 40, a happily married father of three and running a Plastering Business (Dry wall) I guess at the time I was kidding myself I'd have the time anyhow.. 54 now and things have changed, but the passion to get on my bike and ride is as strong as ever, (wish I could say the same about the body) And watching your videos has given me confidence that I might just be able to achieve this goal, So Cheers for that. At the moment I"m having comfort issues and I've noticed how comfy you look. Can I ask how high your Handlebar rise is ? And can you tell me how long your top tube is. Thanks in advance for any help, and I really look forward to your next clip. All the best Rob. GC Australia
Just want to say I'm not completely new to biking. My first overnight/weekend bike trip was when I was twelve and I did a few with mates until footy completely took over weekends when I was about 16. Cheers Paul
Thanks for watching! Sorry about the late reply. I hope you can get out bike touring soon. I would love to ride in Australia some day. It's definitely on my list when I retire. Hope to see you down the road. Grettings from the USA. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
That's exactly how I do it. And yeh, go ride your bike 😀
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
What are the handlebars you use?

Paul, what do you recommend for the seat tilt? I've had trouble with this in the past. Evidently, one type of tilt does not fit all otherwise, the tilt would be fixed. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you, I love all your videos!
I start with the seat level to the ground. I don't want it tilted forward because this makes me lean forward and puts more weight on my hands. I don't want it tilted backwards because it feels awkward and feels inefficient. Just as long as my lower spine is comfortable. Thanks for watching. Stay safe out there and ride on!!
Paul, what kind of handlebar do you have on this Surly Disc Trucker? I plan on replacing my drop bars because my neck and back can’t take it. Thanks!
Here's a link to my handlebars. Wald 1066 Handlebars amzn.to/3fLRHVH Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
