How about instead of opening 5.0 seconds after the train stops, maybe they open 0.0 seconds after the train detects it has stopped. This would save a lot of collective time.
A lot of automated systems were disabled after the 2009 crash. This system can run fully autonomously if enabled but they still don't fully trust it yet The door thing wasn't ever enabled. A system built in but not turned on that I know of A lot of MetroRail should change and update as nee railcars come into service and the internal systems slowly get upgraded

In New York the doors open with between 0 and 1s delay. In Philadelphia they open even before the train comes to a complete stop. So why does it take 5 to 15 seconds in Washington?
I hope that Automatic Door Operation will not replace the train operator who is needed to ensure that no problems occur. I thought that Automatic Train Supervision is supposed to do that job.
Hey there, Thanks for your feedback. The Automatic Door Operation won't replace the operator. When it's time for the train to take off, our operators will still close the doors manually after checking outside the window. We hope this helps! -MG
That's amazing technology - welcome to the 1980's!!!!
Curious how many decades it'll be until they figure out platform screen doors/gates exist.
@@travisbeagle5691 they already have
In the Paris, we have automated subway without any drivers and in the US you are so behind
@@travisbeagle5691 They know it's a thing but they have mixed length cars.

Meanwhile in Montreal... doors start to open while the train is still coming to a stop 😂

It’s probably done this way to give people time to look in/out before ramming into or out of the train car…
@@nikobelic4251 in Montreal the doors open before the train stops and it works perfectly fine. Also Paris a bit
@@romanrat5613 I didn’t say the idea was good I just said that’s probably why.

@@nikobelic4251 maybe, but 5 is far too long for that. 1 second would be sufficient
We've literally had this technology for decades.

I've never been to Washington, but you previously needed to wait 10 to 15 seconds before the door opened!? That is a little bit funny.
ikr, and you still have to wait 5seconds?
hope to see it on all trains soon, why were they removed in the first place?

In most places the driver just presses a button to open the doors which is still faster than this but I do think it’s kinda cool
Will this mean 6 car trains can now stop in the middle of the platform?

Is this on all models or only the 7000 series?
Good question! We're testing this on all railcars ( the 7000 series & legacy cars) on the Red Line. -KB

Fantastic!
I have to press a button to open the door
When does this come to the other lines?
Cool stuff.
Can't wait, but when are you bringing back the Cafe Car?
There never was a Cafe car. This is public transit, not long distance trains.
