Two questions: 1) How does Microsoft know that you are permitted to use Word, Excel, etc? When you start one of the applications, does your computer contact a Microsoft permission server? If yes, then what happens when you do not have internet service, but you want to edit a spreadsheet? 2) What happens to all of your documents, if you decide to not renew your subscription? Will Word, Excel, etc refuse to run? Will Word, Excel, etc, start, but refuse to open documents? Will Word, Excel, etc, documents become read-only? By the way, on my daily-driver computer, I am using Office from 2007 (purchased this i7 box in 2006). I need nothing more than standard use of the apps that came with Office back then. There are several other apps that come with all of the subscription services that Office 2007 does not have. Also, the apps I already have do not have many features offered in the current versions. And none of that matters to me. And I am pretty sure that my version does not phone home with my activity. I wouldn't mind learning Exchange, Publisher, Intune, Azure Information Protection, Editor, Clipchamp, and OneNote... for free, or for a one time charge of, perhaps, $29.99. But not for what Microsoft is charging. For folks that will make use of those applications, then more power to them. But I do not think that most people need most of the apps in the subscription, and I don't think that most people need all of the bells and whistles that are in the most updated versions. I am not knocking those versions. They are probably slick, with power features. I just think that 99%+ of people never use more than 10% of the features (especially for Excel, which you can learn, forever).
1) You're signed into your Microsoft account and the subscription is "activated". While I suspect it might check periodically, the programs should work whether your online or offline. 2) If your documents are on your PC, they remain on your PC. If your documents are in OneDrive, then it depends on how much you have stored in OneDrive. If you have less than would be needed for a free account, then the documents simply remain there. If you have more than is supported by a free account, then you'll get a number of warnings so you can download the documents to your PC.
If you are offline, then some period of time you will be able to use yor software. This period of time is quite long. I'm not sure, but something like one month. Later on you will be able only open and view your files. You will be not able to adit this files. But of course you still can open files on the other machines with MS Office. Limited only using of your copy of MS 365. After you are going online your copy of software will be checked and activated again.
Our PC is old and has Linux on it. We use Google's products. Free storage 15 Gb is better than 5Gb of free storage through Microsoft. However, eventually even with 15 Gb, we will need to increase our storage..... I'm not keen on subscription services, however with increasing storage needs, it might become necessary. It's a question of which company you want to sell your soul to! In Australia, Microsoft Family 365 is $137 p.a. and Microsoft Personal 365 is $107 p.a.
Thankful that I've never needed to buy this class of products. For personal use, I lean towards open source. Employers provide whatever is needed for the job.
i have one pay every october for it mine is up for up to 5 devices also just to say libre office is free for those that dont wanna pay for office suite it can read word a dn office files as well
Full versions of Office (2013, 2016, 2019) allow two concurrent installations. When you wish to swap out your computer, uninstall your office which will then update licensing at Microsoft. You can now install office onto your new computer. A one time purchase should last you until Microsoft's OS prevents you from installing it. This is why I have a fully licensed DVD of Win7 & Win10. If anyone is on either of these OS, disable auto updates. Win11 OS, I cannot disable the auto updates. For the normal bloke, Office 2003 is more than sufficient. Who needs the latest and greatest money grabber. Or use Google docs for free. Lasty, never use the cloud for anything personal or confidential. Once you upload it, you don't own it any more. Keep your data local to your home with backups.
Thank you. Question is: If you can no longer pay for your Microsoft 365 subscription, does Microsoft bar you from using Office and block access to your documents? Hardball reality to the subscription?
If your OneDrive uses over 5GB, then when you stop paying the 1TB you had will be reduced to 5GB. Easy fix: backup your documents first. Other than that your docs are fine, and you can still use the online versions of office apps (I'm not sure if the installed desktop apps check, but I suspect they do).
Leo... looks like you have joined the hordes of folks who have decided that it is perfectly ok to rent software and related services by paying an annual subscription fee. Imagine all the things we are now asked to buy by subscription that used to be included in a single product purchase price. It's kinda like using a credit card to buy products and only paying the minimum monthly balance. It may seem like a good idea at the time but soon you realize that you have a substantial monthly expense and that you actually don't own a damn thing.
I am new to Microsoft 365 from the stand alone version. On the stand alone version, I would get occasional software updates to download. Does Microsoft 365 automatically update your software with updates, or do you need to do anything manually to update it?
Just upgraded to 365 a couple of months ago. Satisfied so far. Particularly like having all my docs on OneDrive, and switched from Evernote (using since 2012) to OneNote, which has a much nicer interface.
I want 365 but do you think its safe? I mean all my excel spreadsheets with my finances and my personal word docs with personal info, are employees looking through that stuff? I mean you are signed into the cloud after all right? If it gets hacked, all your one drive files are exposed right? what are your thoughts?
a) you don't have to store your docs in the cloud b) microsoft already has complete access to your PC via Windows c) Yes, if an account gets hacked then its contents are visible to the hacker. True for all accounts, not just cloud. Maintaining good security remains important.
MS 365 all in one subscription with 1 TB storage and apps ranging from simple to do list apps to office to notetaking to video editor to access to stock photos, PowerPoint automatic design ideas and in future co-pilot is definitely one value for money subscription worth paying for.
With a365 subscription do you get full Teams? The personal Teams is lacking in some features and icons on left panel- Call, creating Teams (one can create communities)..MS does not even document these omissions.
The ONLY thing I do is make charts and forms on Word. Don’t need the rest. I don’t want to rent it. On my computer set up, it doesn’t offer purchase, only subscriptions. Can I buy JUST Word?

I think it is the good option for many people but not worth it if you don't use it a regularly. With all the free options out there including MS office It is very easy to find something free if you need to type up something or need some basic office tool.
I have one question and I am not able to find the answer to it. I am planning to purchase Office 365 just for the sake of cloud storage. The official site says 6TB storage for upto 6 people. Now, if I share this subscription with 5 of my so called family members(6 including me), and equally distribute 1TB among each user, will all 6 of us get a independent id and password? So that our content remains private amongst each other as well? No user can access each others content. Also, if each user can login into 5 devices, does that means 6 users can login into a TOTAL OF 30 DEVICES AT THE SAME TIME?????? Not that this is actually going to happen but there is a possibility that each user might use two devices at the same time, now that makes 12 devices operating at the same time.
Yeah I'm very tempted to get 365 but I'd only be getting it for word. And and can't find any info on what the paid version offers over the free one. I found a site (or bing did) that claims the paid version ahs more features and better access to spel check etc. But the online version also spell and grammar checks and it's not clear what other functions they are talking about
Dear Leo: My machine came pre installed with Office 2016 Pro. Then there is things like Excel Mobile and Office 365App also on the PC. I am able to work on Office 2016 Pro. However when i try opening Excel Mobile it won't let me use the software and it will present a pop up box talking of a MS 365 subscription. When i try opening the Office 365App it gives me an error message. Having multiple same or similar Apps and software can be confusing. Do we uninstall these office apps from the PC before subscribing to a MS365 plan? And if so what is the steps or process to remove these and all traces of them. Also what are the steps of downloading and installing the 365 apps on a PC after subscribing to a plan. I am considering the 365 family plan. Thank you.
You don't need to uninstall, just install Microsoft 365 and it'll do the right thing. Once you've subscribed you'll be taken to a page about your subscription which includes a download link.

Ultimately all stuff was strewn all over the place - Outlook attachments, OneDrive, Downloads folder and other areas on the PC. The subscription is not worth it for most people. Unless you work in enterprise and are dependent on it you don't need it. Also, OneDrive backup absolutely blows.
I agree ... Great deal, and I've been a MS 365 subscriber for years. Question: is there a way to selectively install parts of the Office package on Windows?? I don't need (and don't want to give drive space to) Access and Publisher. One of my machines has only 64 GB. Thanks!!
I wonder if a different question is more pertinent. Does anyone actually need Microsoft Office in any form? It depends on your needs of course, but I have not used Microsoft Office since about 2008, instead I use the WPS versions, which are free - they supply all my needs and will seamlessly replace the MS Office apps that they are designed to. There is no Publisher or Access, so if you need that then the argument may be different.
I have Office 365 and I don't like it. I transfer files to it and can't find them when I close out and log back in. I want files saved to my computer. Not in the cloud. What version of MS Office works with Windows 11, which I don't care for either. Think twice about buying either of these.
You are probably using the browser, hence it saves on the cloud. You can download the desktop applications with your subscription, with this you can choose to save either on your desktop or on the cloud. go to office.com and you should see an option that says install office or something like that, that will download the installer for desktop.

The problem is the manipulation factor. My bank want my account, credit cards, mortgage, and many other things to go through them. In that case, changing banks will be difficult because so many things that interlink or cross over will make it FAR easier to stay with that bank. I get very nervous about subscriptions. Even in the 90s, the way they'd have an add for Time/Life music with a tiny box you had to check so that after your initial purchase, you were saying no to being inundated at a greater cost every month for the rest of your life. It just feels deceitful and manipulative to me.
NOPE, I purchased the offline version at a low price, as it has everything on it I need. And it’s a one off fee. I paid $20 for full retail professional copy and all works 100% and registered online successfully. Now when I do the maths 5 x 20 = 100. Feel free to correct me if the maths is wrong.
Subscription sucks. It's more expensive. Nobody buys software from the box anymore. You can get digital download from most website for $20 and if you want on five computer it will be $100. I'm still using MS Office 2007, and works just great, and I'm not eager to get any latest version.
Absolutely not! No way! Never! Shame on you for even suggesting this is a good deal. Office 365 is web based and the real software is not. If I want web based applications I might as well use the Google suite for free.
Office 365 IS NOT WEB BASED. You download and install the software on your PC just as before. (There is a free web based version, but that's not what you get with a subscription - you get actual downloaded and installed software.)
@@askleonotenboom you're not downloading the full program. just the apps. Also that allows Microsoft to collect information on you. That's why it's so much cheaper.
I forgot to uncheck autorenewal on Microsoft 365 which renewed this morning, and can't get a hold of anyone to talk to for a refund so I can purchase a one time purchase of Microsoft Office. Terrible customer service!!!!!
How much did Microsoft pay for this video? A single copy of Microsoft office is generally good for anyone for anywhere between 5 to 10 years. Most people can get their stuff done in office 2007 or even older ones. This subscription may make sense to businesses, not to individuals. Subscriptions are a huge pain where the sun don't shine and you are at the mercy of Microsoft who can push ads, spam or increase subscription prices. Plus you can't operate offline effectively. It is imho an effing liability to use 365. As far as AI goes, Microsoft AI has colored me unimpressed, so another NO.
@@askleonotenboom Ah a fan then. There was a time Microsoft did some splendid work. Now it's just a shell of what it was. It's very sad to see such potential go to waste.

I think they are operating like criminals I am not using a 365 subscription there is no way to cancel it and they taking money fro my account. THE ABSOLUTE MOSE USELESS VIDEO I HAVE EVER WATCHED! WHY DO YOU NOT COVER SHARING??? OR VERSION CONTROL?? OR EMAIL FUNCTIONALITY??? THIS IS ONLY TALKING ABOUT OFFICE SOFTWARE!

Where can I buy it just once? All I can find is the subscription option 😮
On Microsoft's site
if you only pay for ONE YEAR does MS 365 stop working?
It keeps working, you just stop getting updates (and your OneDrive storage may be descreased)
@@askleonotenboom thanks!
@@askleonotenboom With no updates does it meann that it becomes less secure...?
Our PC is old and has Linux on it. We use Google's products. Free storage 15 Gb is better than 5Gb of free storage through Microsoft. However, eventually even with 15 Gb, we will need to increase our storage.....
I'm not keen on subscription services, however with increasing storage needs, it might become necessary. It's a question of which company you want to sell your soul to!
In Australia, Microsoft Family 365 is $137 p.a. and Microsoft Personal 365 is $107 p.a.
this dude is just making a sale.. he isn't helping
He is getting commission.
You helped me decide on getting the subscription, I just bought a base model MacBook and I'll be needing more cloud storage. Thanks!
Since retiring, I find the Google Docs suite of apps to service my needs well. (Yeah, I bought into the whole Google ecosystem.)
Your video is a great lesson in marketing. And yes, I decided to buy subscription ;)
If it gets hacked, all your one drive files are exposed right? what are your thoughts?
a) you don't have to store your docs in the cloud
b) microsoft already has complete access to your PC via Windows
c) Yes, if an account gets hacked then its contents are visible to the hacker. True for all accounts, not just cloud. Maintaining good security remains important.
What security do you suggest I get for my laptop?
MS 365 all in one subscription with 1 TB storage and apps ranging from simple to do list apps to office to notetaking to video editor to access to stock photos, PowerPoint automatic design ideas and in future co-pilot is definitely one value for money subscription worth paying for.
In your opinion
With a365 subscription do you get full Teams? The personal Teams is lacking in some features and icons on left panel- Call, creating Teams (one can create communities)..MS does not even document these omissions.
If you would like Microsoft 365 with fair prices! Just let me know!
The ONLY thing I do is make charts and forms on Word. Don’t need the rest. I don’t want to rent it.
On my computer set up, it doesn’t offer purchase, only subscriptions. Can I buy JUST Word?
Not that I'm aware of. You might look into the open source alternatives.
So how do you get the one=time payment version?
"Office Home & Student 2021
One-time purchase for PC or Mac"
On this page: www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/buy/compare-all-microsoft-365-products?&activetab=tab:primaryr1
Thank You. Just getting my head around it.
Just bought a new computer and brought Microsoft Office, just to get Outlook. Can I get the subscription at a reduced price?
Not that I'm aware of, no.
Yes. Each account is separate and each account has its own 1TB.
Yeah I'm very tempted to get 365 but I'd only be getting it for word. And and can't find any info on what the paid version offers over the free one. I found a site (or bing did) that claims the paid version ahs more features and better access to spel check etc. But the online version also spell and grammar checks and it's not clear what other functions they are talking about
Dear Leo:
My machine came pre installed with Office 2016 Pro.
@@askleonotenboom Thanks. I know of someone who subscribed to the single user 365 plan and hadn't downloaded any entitled Office apps, wasn't aware of what was installed on the PC, wasn't aware of OneDrive 1TB storage entitlement, wasn't sure about how to use the Office apps and OneDrive, was accessing most of the stuff over the MS365 cloud (emails, documents via web versions of Outlook, Word, PowerPoint etc (the web apps are free anyway)), and was knowingly, unknowingly saving documents in OneDrive and other areas. Ultimately all stuff was strewn all over the place - Outlook attachments, OneDrive, Downloads folder and other areas on the PC. When asked reason for subscribing, the person kind of figured that "additional functionality" was needed. Wasted money I feel. And now the subscription is cancelled though the functionality is needed. I feel sorry for such people for being technologically challenged and subscribing and not subscribing for the wrong reasons. Thank God I am not that technologically challenged.

The subscription is not worth it for most people. Unless you work in enterprise and are dependent on it you don't need it. Also, OneDrive backup absolutely blows.
I have recently become Microsoft free. I now run Linux Mint with Libre Office with no regrets.
I agree ... Great deal, and I've been a MS 365 subscriber for years. Question: is there a way to selectively install parts of the Office package on Windows?? I don't need (and don't want to give drive space to) Access and Publisher. One of my machines has only 64 GB. Thanks!!
Not that I'm aware of. It seems they've moved it all to a package deal.
You could probably try installing all and later on, uninstalling the ones you don't want?
@@askleonotenboomFWIW, I don’t think MS Access is included in the subscription.
How is the $100 per year cheaper than 150 or so for 5 to 10 years?!!! Are you a Microsoft employee?
exactly.
I agree, but if you need the 1 TB of cloud storage then it's a good deal.
I bought office 2019 about 6 months ago for less than $10… working perfectly with regular updates…
Storage is really cheep u can get a hard drive with way more capacity with 100 budget.
Great information.
Thank you. I just wanted to check before purchasing Microsoft 365.
January 2023 you can get Microsoft 365 basic 1.99$ per month for 100g of storage just perfect for me it buys me time to reduce tons of email and attachments
per month? I think not. The prices I see are per year. If you're paying per month you need to stop. :-)
My experience with 365 is awful, such a confusing ecosystem, I have nothing but problems, it is the single biggest issue on my productivity, any money paid for it is a waste.
Are use the office 365 subscription. I use the transcribe feature in Word for transcribing meetings and audio recordings
I think each Microsoft account with which you share Microsoft 365 gets its own terabyte of OneDrive storage.
True
No no No we don't need it ! Swich to Linux or Libre office Better product plus less information they collect? So Microsoft can go the hell whish them luck Bon voyage with your overpriced product!
IS there a voice assistant service that I dont have to pay for? Cortana was free and I just dont want to pay for something that should be free , we dont pay for our gogole assistant on our smart phone so why the hell would I pay for something thats free??? so yea I would love to know what program that I can use so i dont have to pay richie rich microsft who is already rich.....
If you buy the subscription, can you use it on Windows and Macs? We have both in the household.
Yes.
Its too complcated and it goes on the cloud
Subscription will cost you more, why do you think companies push so hard for it?!? Consider LIbre Office or Open Office alternatives
If I wanted my files in another computer, I would send them to another computer.

I can't even get to cancel my microsoft subscription 365, so right now, I'm going to have to close my bank account. 😮
I forgot to uncheck autorenewal on Microsoft 365 which renewed this morning, and can't get a hold of anyone to talk to for a refund so I can purchase a one time purchase of Microsoft Office. Terrible customer service!!!!!
My question is if they want our money so bad why do they make it so difficult to subscribe to it lol
To answer your question, Microsoft paid me exactly $0.00 for this video.
@@askleonotenboom Ah a fan then. There was a time Microsoft did some splendid work. Now it's just a shell of what it was. It's very sad to see such potential go to waste.
Or you can use Libre Office for free. Sticking with Microsoft, unless you have a real reason, is silly. If you find Libre Office is useful, you can give them a contrbution.
I think they are operating like criminals I am not using a 365 subscription there is no way to cancel it and they taking money fro my account. I got the one-time license but the computer does not allow me to install and pushing me to activate the subscription so all in all in my case absolutely non-sense to have a subscription
Subscriptions = profit for MS
I'm don't with the subscription!

And zero mention of Co-Authoring of documents and files! Cannot do this in Office 2019 or 2021.
Plus Auto-Save and cloud-based granular version control. No mention!?!?
