Gulbis had a freakish fun in 13/14- his win at delray having to qualify in, then having to qualify into Indian Wells where he ended up making a deep run in a stacked field just to fall a tad short won’t be forgotten- the guys normal rally forehand was HEAVY
Gulbis is one of my favorite players. Very talented but could never figure him out. It always felt like he was capable of beating anyone but at the same time capable of losing to anyone.
Shows how its truly about bringing it hard each and every day. That’s what Federer, Nadal and Djokovic do
Its not that simple ...
A lot of great talents are derailed by injuries and injury management ... Gulbis and Janowicz are constantly mired in injuries, they never managed to catch a break to build any momentum towards maintaining a stability of great form for a prolong period of time ..
You also need some luck to gather the right people to support your training, health nutrition, mental motivation ... having stable personal relationships also helps to maintatin focus on the prize .... its a matter of luck to get all these elements together to work in an optimum efficiency ...

Still the best match I saw live in 10 years at Roland Garros Gulbis- Federer (Round 3, Federer was eliminated in 5 sets). Gulbis was unstoppable that day.

@@rayadisurya7343 No one likes to change their style, especially a forehand change that big for Gulbis. Yes, he always had a powerful forehand, but it was inconsistent. After he changed his form, even though it looked awkward and had less power, at the very least he was comfortable hitting consistent forehands.

@@rayadisurya7343 Sorry, but I do not use rankings as a measuring stick. In fact, I do not actually care about rankings unless it plays a factor (such as world tour finals). Otherwise, I care about the potential of the players rather than their ranking.
Give you an example. So Kyrgios ranking is 39. I don't know about you, but do you really think he is the 39th best player in the world now? See the nonsense?

It is wrong to say that ranking is not a good way to determine if a player is good or not.
For exemple, Kirgios is a very talented player and can be very dangerous even for the better players.
So why is he "only" 39 ? Men this guy is so irregular. It is his fault if he is 39. His current level is not as high as his talent and this is it.

Gulbis was playing a challenger event in Australia a couple of days ago at 33 years of age.
I never liked so much his game, but always admired his ability to change strokes direction in the last moment before hitting the ball. It's noticeable how much Nadal, one of the best of all times reading opponents intentions in their body language, struggle a lot trying to figure where is gonna land the next ball and so many times he has to correct his first impression doing a great effort. Very rare to see something like that.
Fognini was up 6-4 5-0 and 40-0 with 3 match points, this year at Montecarlo
Saying "he came very close to beating him twice" means he actually won one and almost won another. What you mean is that he twice came close to beating him.

Ethic to improve play he can beat Nadal a series of times. Even like this and it is a big challenge for Nadal to beat Kyrgios.

That "lightest drop shot" wasn't that light while landing around the serve box base line.. ;D It caught Rafa off the guard though making him lose balance. Otherwise it had been an easy winner for the Spaniard. Kudos for that.

He disguises his ball projection in his windup very well, similar to Federer in its deceptiveness, though done very differently. One of the keys to Fed's success.

Ernests Gulbis is a very hot/cold player but when he's on fire, he's invincible.
Every new match i watch from Nadal, i believe each time more, he is the most unique player it would ever be in the history, a mentallity it's just....really...i cannot find words...i love that guy. For me just seeing the facts, he is the most incredible player would ever be, for me he is the GOAT. No matters how good it's your day, he will find the way, and doing that 15 years, it's the only player to maintain in the top 5 for that long...this is the real greatness. Totally respect for Novak and Federer, they are so amazing and true legends as well, maybe in the future someone can copy a little Novak or Roger, but really copying Nadal it's just non-sense.

If this guy could have tapped into his full potential, i think he could have had a better career than players like Murray or Wawrinka. Huge potential.
What Gulbis did was brilliant in both instances, but you can see how Nadal was cleverly placing the ball in uncomfortable positions making Gulbis tired and frustrated and then inducing unforced errors out of him. Nadal knows the value of the win on both counts.
Nadal is great because he is not Invincible.
He just knows how to stay that extra bit, fight relentlessly and come up with solutions in a creative way in critical moments and most importantly he converts those points. Unlike other players, he doesn't give up on shots which keeps him active and flexible and most importantly he doesn't get frustrated even though he loses out on points where he runs all the way from behind the baseline to the net or reverse.

I also remember Gulbis made big statements about challenging Fedal for the top prizes ... its very strange, often times its like bad luck to make such a pompous statements, several times Tsitsipas also made such statements and immediately afterwards he lost in the early rounds in several tournaments ... it seems like making such statements psychologically adds extra pressure on yourself to live up to your own hype and hinders your performance ..
With Gulbis he's been mired in many injuries, is probably not playing at his former level due to health issues ...

Talent does not make winners because the win comes from hard work and severe hunger, Ernest is not a waisted talent but a great champion and that is enough for him and for us what is sure . Ernest is going to do great after tennis.
Nadal is a great champion and athlete, but true talent is so much nicer to watch (i.e., federer, ,gulbis, etc.).

@@td866 I think the point Tiriac was trying to make was that the converse is true as well...that you can have a boatload of talent, but if you're not willing to put in the work you may not win the cup in the end, so to speak. We can't know how much work Gulbis or Tomic or Malisse or any of the brilliant underachievers out on the tennis tour put in. But their reputations do precede them...Before I forget, do you really believe that Nadal is just "athletic" & "hard working," with less "talent" than Fed, Novak, etc?

You realize, yes, that "almost" winning two matches against Nadal is the same thing as saying he lost two matches against Nadal . . ? That said, Gulbis is indeed one of tennis' biggest could-have-beens -- the questionable work ethic coupled with a lack of a substantial coach who might have pushed the boy into greatness are perhaps the two most telling marks against him. Regardless, a talented player. Cheers!
His coach was actually Gunter Bresnik (who now coaches Thiem)... he is not to be overlooked as a coach. The fall of Gulbis was of Gulbis's own creation. Shame really as I was a huge fan
You're lacking some basic verbal comprehension skills if you truly believe that "almost won two matches" = "lost two matches".
If we're only concerned about the end result then sure, there is no difference between two phrases, however, "almost won two matches" implies that it was a tough match and a good performance by Gulbis. "Lost two matches" does not give any insight into the close rivalry in the match.

My point is that you can see "almost" however many times you want and if if if (if Rafa wasn't injured blah blah blah), but what matters is the hard facts of what happened. Rafa was injured is not a valid excuse. Federer is injured is not that valid an excuse always. I mean, sometimes, it makes sense, like 2013 and 2008 AO, but whenever Rafa loses, "It's not fair because he was injured". Truth is, Rafa is EXTREMELY prone to injuries due to his inefficient playing style. How he's still playing is a miracle, but it has cost him his knees, his legs, his shoulder etc.

This match was in a time, where Nadals game was based on defense. Nowadays with the new Nadal it is impossible to do that to him. Gulbis had no constance, this is the skill, that the big 3 have. Only talent is not enough.

Not wasted. He gave some special performances, but that doesn´t mean he could have been world number 1 at time of these giants that still roam the earth. I believe he gave his max so we saw what he was capable of, a TOP 10 level at the time Tennis hit its peak. With more work and dedication he could have stayed there longer, but on peak performance, he maxed out as far as I can tell.

I was a big fan of Earnie. Such a rocket serve and hammer of a forehead possessed. I remember reading somewhere that tennis pundits said that he was more talented than joker. The difference being joker was dedicated towards training and Earnie had a liking for late night parties which led to his downfall. But then finally it all depends on what a person wants to be happy.

I'm including Kyrgios because I seriously doubt he'll ever get his head out of his ass and the reality is - the younger guys like Tsitsipas, Zverev, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov, Berrettini, Medvedev, Rublev, Rudd, Sinner, Rudd, Fritz, Tiafoe, etc. - they all actually love the game and WANT to be #1. They're not playing merely because they weren't good enough to be a professional basketball player. Also, I didn't include Thiem because he's actually 2 years older than Kyrgios. Also, I wana thrown in DelPo...except his main problem is that he can't stay healthy! Still, even when he is healthy - he should have won a lot more than 1 Slam.

I don’t know if wasted talent is fair. He’s always had weaknesses that were exploitable. He stepped up in sone absolutely huge moments because he has a sack of steel and a great belief in himself. He’s had an entertaining career, and I will always turn the channel if I know he is on. He was close to having a great run last year, ran into some bad luck, then it all fell apart. I don’t feel like he’s done though. Things just didn’t seem like they were clicking, similar to Jack Sock who is still a force in doubles. I think he needs to get in peak physical condition and give it a go. There is no one more entertaining than Gulbis. He seems like he could be a bastard to deal with, but for some reason I root like hell for him.
I do not like the term "wasted talent" but to be honest, Gulbis could have achieved a lot more. He has all the weapons: a powerful forehand, great backhand, an amazing serve, good return and a superb drop shot. Reaching the top is not easy and it is hard for everyone to get there.
