Great information. I have a question. I have a 20 year old river birch with 3 stems. Two of the stems I think are dead, they have no leaves and have had none for 2 years. Can I cut out the dead stems without harming the healthy stem or should I just remove the tree entirely?

    Is it advisable to trip
The tops? I planted one small multi-stem tree in my landscaping, last years. Needless to say, it has skyrocketed in growth, over 1 year. Would trimming the top cause odd offshoots?

My multi-stem pruning question for you concerns a four variety grafted pear tree.
Some standard guidelines for pears may not apply, such as a central leader. So, what do you think of pruning rules for a four variety pear?

Why not just leave the two that are already connected and then just remove the far right one. Multi trunk trees are very appealing and that one had a natural multi trunk already. The far right one is the only one I would’ve removed

Because the pressure would build up and eventually become too much for the fibers to bear, thus breaking the tree in half

You are wrong in all aspects, as you are following a dogmatic approach. It's about time that you and all the followers think about the consequences of what you promote, which is not for correctness or truth both scientific or technical. Besides, what you suggest was applicable to a young tree. "Catch-up tree care" maximises injury. Think harder about consequences.
