I'd love to see aquatic horror, Arctic/blizzard horror, anthologies/short story collections, and forest/outdoor horror in a future video 🖤.
Apropos of nothing, but I know you love litfic that has darker elements and I just read a fantastic debut novella that no one is talking about called Bear Season. I highly recommend it if you get a chance to pick it up.
Yes, these are such great sub genre ideas!
Ooo I will look into bear season too. Thanks for the recs!! 🫶🏻
I'd love to hear about aquatic horror beyond Nick Cutter's The Deep and Artic horror beyond Michele Paver's Dark Matter (both of which I loved)...so I am seconding this!
older vintage horror books are the best books to read. 🤘
Night Worms did an Addiction Horror-themed package a few years ago. The books in it were The Green Kangaroos, All Smoke Rises (which I read and thought was really good), and Lullabies for Suffering (short story collection), if you're interested!🖤
Yessss thank you so much for the recs!! Adding them to my list now 🫶🏻
How do you always look so stunning? So many of my favorites were listed in this video 💜💜 I've only read 2 Rachel Harrison books so far, but both were about female relationships (with ourselves, and other women) with a sprinkle of horror elements. I love how she weaves those together.
Stop you are too kind 🥹🫶🏻
Her new release, so thirsty, will have female friendship as well! I'm so excited to check it out. She just does it so well 👏🏻
If u want another slasher, I’d highly recommend clown in a cornfield 1 & 2 if u haven’t read it. It was pitched to me as “if u like scream, u will like this’ and it’s camp but it’s great imo. Great video!🖤
I haven't explored much horror novels yet, though I consume other horror media, so this is helpful. 🖤
Some subgenres I reccomend are vampires, comedy, gothic, alien, creepy kids (if that counts), and maybe witchcraft?
Oooo yes these are great!
Great video idea! I love so many of the books you mentioned, and I've added some new books to my TBR, too. I absolutely LOVED Our Hideous Progeny. It doesn't get enough recognition. I'm so excited to see it made your list of favorites🖤
Thank you!! I hope you enjoy the ones you added 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Totally agree that our hideous progeny needs more hype!
This lighting!!! 🙌🙌
I cannot think of possession without thinking of a head full of ghosts. THE possession story for me.
I loved this video, so informative and such great recs.
I know youre not a huge fan, but id love to see if you have a cosmic horror fave 👀
The sun was on my side that day 😂😂
No but really it is THE possession story.
Hahaha edenville scarred me. I do not currently have a fave but maybe that would be a good themed vlog 👀
This was so fun to watch! It's always interesting to see other people's journeys with horror, where they're coming from, their starting points and all that. I grew up in the eighties, so of course it was a lot of Stephen King and Clive Barker, but it's been incredible to follow the genre as it's expanded and evolved in the past however many years. I refuse to write the number because it's a long time and I don't like to accept that, ha! I think one of my favorite subgenres, or maybe sub-subgenres is horror that revolves around writers or artists, especially creators who go off to create in a remote/isolated location, and weird, creepy stuff ensues. I guess The Shining (also The Dark Half, sort of) would fall squarely into that, and I'd love to read more!
A subgenre that I was SO surprised that actually I enjoy is cozy horror (mostly because there's usually romance, which I don't love) and Rachel Harrison's Cackle was SO GOOD.
Ooo yes I love when writers/artists are an element in books. I love when there's even bookstores or stuff about books in books! I'm so happy you gave cozy horror a try and loved it!! She has a new book coming out and I can't wait to read it.
Splatterpunk is definitely mostly body horror (and gross-out factor) so much so, that I was initially confused as to why you combined it with survival, but I definitely understand lol
The book is such equal parts of both i could not just have it under one 😂
I recently read Bless your Heart by Lindy Ryan and it felt like a cozy horror for sure though it still has a good amount of gore and intense scenes. I think what made it feel so cozy was the setting and the strong family bonds. Would highly recommend it!
That one sounds familiar. I will definitely look into it, it sounds great!
The Vessel sounds like it would give me nightmares. *adds to cart*
Everything you said about My Best Friends Exorcism 🙏
8:23 oh tea that's good to know I never heard that about this book
Scream meets The Shining??? Literally say less
I'm so here for this series! 🖤
Hahahah I hope you enjoy it if you get to it!! It is on KU if you have that! A lot of his books are actually.
I will always love my best friend exorcism. I refuse to watch the movie. It'll ruin it 😂
Thank you for the support 🫶🏻🫶🏻 I'm so excited to create another list
Darcy Coats is definitely my cosy horror go to. Her book Dead of Winter is one of the best ones I’ve read. Highly recommend it!
I neeeed to read some of her works. Its so past due. I definitely want to read from below over summer for the ocean horror vibes. I might get to dead of winter once the season hits
@@WickedScorpio I think you’ll enjoy From Below, it’s very atmospheric and quite niche - as far as underwater horror goes
Great recommendations! *adds everything to tbr*
Hahah happy to help (but also sorry to your tbr 😂😂)
Yesss!! So many awesome recs here!! I love Curse of The Reaper!!
I really need to check out Our Hideous Prodigy 🖤🖤🖤🖤
I would be so curious what you would think of our hideous progeny! Science heavy historical is definitely a hard sell 😂
I love this video idea! Have you read Boys in the Valley? It’s a possession horror that I read a couple months ago and absolutely loved. (Definitely save it for winter if you haven’t read it yet though 😊) That book made me FEEL THINGS 🖤
Thank you! ☺️
I haven't but it was on my radar after hearing good things but I honestly didn't even realize it was possession. Now im way more interested! That is definitely going on my winter tbr now. Thank you for the rec 🫶🏻✨️
that's a great video idea, I'm quite new to horror and think this video will come in handy as soon as I'm ready to commit to the genre
Thank you! I hope you find something you love
i loveeeeee this concept! i can’t wait to read the cotton candy massacre this summer
Thank you so much!! CCM is the perfect summer read too. I hope you enjoy it!
Omg I love The Troop
So good!! (And gross 😂😂)
hella good recommendations!! idk if you've read vicious by v.e. schwab, but that's my favorite frankenstein retelling. not a direct retelling but pulls on a lot of the same elements! also heard frankenstein in baghdad was another great one!
I had no idea that was inspired by frankenstein! I will definitely have to check that out now! Thanks for the recs!
I really need to read the vessel it sounds like it actually has a lot of tropes I enjoy!
I hope you enjoy it if you get to it! It's available on KU if you have it :)
What a great list! Thanks for putting this together, I was able to get some great recommendations! I would highly recommend “The Good House” by Tananarive Due (haunted house), “Come Closer” by Sara Gran or “Goddess of Filth” by V. Castro (possession), “The Ballad of Black Tom” by Victor LaValle (cosmic/occult horror), and “Fantasticland” by Mike Bockoven (found footage/amusement park horror)🤓📚
Thank you for the recs!! I have had the good house on my kindle for awhile now, I really need to read it! I definitely need to try some more cosmic horror too. I havent had much luck with it yet, but recently read my first victor lavalle and really enjoyed his writing
Yasss, I was looking for someone to say Come Closer! So so so good! 💅🏽
I love the idea of a Frankenstein sub-genre 🤗 definitely adding that rec to my tbr. There’s a book called The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein that I thought was more litfic, but just looked it up again and its horror 🖤🖤🖤 and a sub genre I would like to read more from is ocean/sea/water 🖤
With supernatural I think vampires, witches, magic powers, etc. With paranormal I think ghosts, demons/angels, haunted houses. But idk for sure if that’s the “right” way 🤔
A ya horror I loved is This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers. It’s in the zombies, apocalyptic, survival area, I’m afraid to reread it bc what if I don’t like it as much now that I’m older
Yess dark descent is on my tbr list for that subgenre!
I'm definitely going to read more ocean/water horror for the summer, so I'm hoping I have a fave soon 🤞🏻
That is such a good point for supernatural versus paranormal. I always consider vampires, witches, etc. as separate categories since theres so much in each of those, but they probably all would fall under the umbrella of supernatural! But then the show supernatural has ghosts, so I always think of that 😂😂
I have so many books I loved when I was young, but I'm too scared to reread or recommend for the exact same reason lol
Loved this! A Head full of ghosts is a must read! I still think about that ending 😫 very excited about horror movie next month!! A really good body/survival horror is The Ruins by Scott Smith. I loved it. I was never bored and the pacing was great. 🖤
Same!! I'm also nervous bc so far i have loved everything I've read of his so the pressure it higher 😅
Oooo yes, the ruins is going to be on my summer tbr for sure! I can't wait to read it
Great video!
Thank you!
Please continue this series!!! I definitely want to get into reading horror genre books once I stop being a chicken lol because I love me some classic horror movies like Nightmare on Elm Street. 😅
I definitely will!! Honestly horror movies scare me way more than books haha
@@WickedScorpio Noted! I will be trying out some of your recs to see if it's the same for me.
Great video idea!❤
Thank you so much! ☺️
So my recommendation for a slasher horror book would have to be "Night of the Prowler" by Jon Athan. I also have a recommendation for a supernatural Ghost story with addiction, and the book is "Ghost Eaters" by Clay McLeod Chapman. If you haven't read Darcy Coates yet, id recommend "Craven Manor"
I totally forgot about ghost eaters! I have it on my shelf. I will definitely need to pick it up soon. And I will check out night prowler and craven manor. Thank you for the recs!
For cryptid horror I’d recommend Laurel Hightower’s Below if you haven’t already read it.
I definitely want to read that one! After the day of the door, it's a must. I really enjoyed her writing style
not the point but your hair is so so pretty
Thank you so much 🥹🖤
You need to check out philip fracassi . Hi from Belgium
I absolutely do! I have a couple of his works on my list. And hello! So happy you found my channel
I've read almost all of these and you did such an amazing job talking about them!
I feel like a broken record recommending Brother by Ania Ahlborn, but it's a slasher that I loved so much and I can't remember if you've tried it yet or not. The ending is fantastic.
We Need to Do Something by Max Booth is one I've been hearing about a lot lately for claustrophobic horror but haven't read yet.
I'm trying my first Darcy Coates next month! Going with From Below 🤞
Oh and for splatterpunk I'd look into Kristopher Triana and Judith Sonnet and see what speaks to you because both of those authors are hit or miss for me. 🖤
Thank you so much 🥹🫶🏻
Ugh yes brother is on my kindle I really need to get to it!! I feel like a broken record saying that lol. I will prioritize it this summer. I honestly didn't even realize it was a slasher!
I did read We Need to do something. I actually saw the movie the movie first jot realizing it was a book, but the book and movie are literally line by line the same so the book didn't have as much as an impact. I should maybe reread it though. Ooo yes from below is on my mandatory Darcy reads once I get to her works.
I have Full brutal by Kristopher Triana on my list! I will look into Judith sonnet too 🖤🖤
I love Apocalyptic stories one series I'm working through right now is the Black Winter Series by Darcy Coates. The first book is Voices in the Snow and I devoured that book. There are 4 books total in the series
unfortunately, I had to dnf The Troop the way things were described were a bit too gross for me and I felt sick to my stomach. The animal cruelty I wasn't aware of when I started reading the book and I tried to skip past it.
Ooo I will definitely have to look into black winter!! Thank you for the rec 🫶🏻
Dnfing the troop is totally valid. It is truly the grossest book I've read 😅
@@WickedScorpio of course! ❤ they're a bit on the chonkier side, but have been super quick reads for me. I just finished the second book today
😅yeah i felt bad since I got pretty far, but I just couldn't do it
I need to get to Head Full of Ghosts ASAP
Idk if you've read Final Girl Support Group but it's def a slasher which I wasn't expecting.
SAME w/ Such Sharp Teeth I was like why tf do I want to read about werewolves but it's actually so good lol
Another rec honestly idk the subgenre, maybe splatterpunk? Is Gone to See the River Man. WILD
Yes you do!! I did read that one. I enjoyed it, I think I gave it 4 stars.
Ugh such Sharp Teeth was so good!! It honestly made me want to read an actual horror werewolf book, but honestly I don't even know any 😂
Splatterpunk is something I want to try. I scared though lmao. I may make it into a themed vlog one day
🖤💚 Hi chica, I answered you on Pango
Other sub-genres I can think of would be horror short story collections, horror poetry (seeing more of these pop up now), feminist horror, good for her horror, motherhood horror, horror about aging, cryptid horror, summer camp horror, ocean/water horror, claustrophobic horror, queer horror, horror about food/hunger, workplace horror
Yessss, love this list. Tysm 🖤🖤 I have a bunch of lists for feminist centric stories specifically, and I'm working on a video centered around the subgenres and specific elements all under that umbrella (unhinged women, good for her, motherhood etc.)
I really enjoyed this video! Have you read The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone? It would be more creature feature but I think of it as apocalyptic. I thought it was fun.
I have not but I'm definitely adding it to my tbr. I need allll the creature feature recs but if it also has apocalyptic, that sounds amazing 👏🏻
Hey! You should check out swan song for apocalyptic!
Thank you for the rec!! Adding it to my tbr now ☺️
