Unfortunately for WOTC, many of the early D&D creators were well known in the public at conventions and other fan events. They were universally well liked. That's the opposite of WOTC themselves, who are a bunch of nobodies we've never heard of OR met. We only know them from their twitters, where they are the most toxic sludge type of personalities you can imagine WOTC can write whatever they want, but at the end of the day, that can't tarnish Gygax's reputation no matter how big of a shovel they get to throw dirt on him
