Chapters 00:23 - Intro 02:31 - Scottie Scheffler is now an Olympian! 15:46 - Rick Shiels' hot take! 17:08 - Olympic Festival of Golf! (More disciplines needed?) 28:45 - Tom Kim needed a medal at the Olympics! 33:40 - Is Phil Kenyon the best putting coach in the world?
I'm French, I played Le Golf National and from that experience, I'd have Scottie's approach from the rough on 17 as my runner-up to shot of the year - second only to Bryson's bunker shot on 18 at Pinehurst. It's inhuman how he managed to land that ball so softly from so thick a rough and settle himself for birdie. Tee to green the guy is above everyone else - just imagine if his putter was as good as the rest of his game. Kuddos to him, well deserved even if I can't lie, I'd have preferred some of the other names on top of the leaderboard on Sunday. Victor Perez's back nine was on a whole other level of excitement, given the direct competition against him he can be proud of himself - certainly made us proud!! Tommy was fantastic as well, the lad is as beloved as any French player out there at L'Albatros, but his chip on 17 might haunt him; Great performance though. Now Rory and Rahm... oh boy, as much as I despise Chamblee, gotta agree with him that Rahmbo's back 9 was the stuff of nightmare, and not something I expected from him. Tough year for the European elite, all in all. The US of A have been stomping us, Luke Donald might be looking at the last four Majors and the Olympics and wonder if it was such a good idea going for a second captaincy at Bethpage :0
Being American, I was really happy for Scottie, but I've got to admit....I was really pulling for Tommy to win the gold. He's such a great guy that I really wanted him to pull it out. Then I was blown away with the interviews with him and how happy he still was with being in that moment and hanging on to the silver. Such a class act.
As an American Tommy is one of my favorite golfers too. But the Olympics has a magical way of unlocking patriotism unlike nothing else. I really like Tommy but I'm so happy Scheff won it for 🇺🇲! Him crying made me feel proud to be American.
Although it was a great, exciting finish, it would be nice to see a team match play event (best ball or alternate shot or mixed team). So maybe 2 days of stroke play for a medal, then 2 days of match play for a medal.
I'm new to the podcast but I absolutely love the banter and chemistry Rick and Guy have. As an American, I have flashbacks to the voices of the Beatles on a certain episode of the Scooby Doo cartoon show when I listen to these Brits. I'm even now pronouncing words differently, like "other, but" and "playing." You guys are doing a great job. Speaking of great jobs, Sophie is an absolute rock star. In a world of forced, female sports commentators, Sophie simply rises above the competition. She has an unmatched combination of knowledge, skilled delivery and a pleasurable voice for listeners; I wish we could have her contribute to hockey, MMA and other sports. I guess I'm a fan of good work - and Sophie gets it done! So, in short, keep up the good work - Guy, Sophie and Rick are the leaders in this space for all the right reasons!
I went to the Golf at the Olympics and as a spectator on the course it was amazing. I go to a lot of golf events, The Open, Ladies Open, LIV, PGA at Wentworth, British Masters at The Belfry and I have to say I think I enjoyed the Olympic event at Le Golf National more than any other. The crowds were amazing, the banking for spectators gave great vantage points and I loved the golfers playing in their country colours. It genuinely meant so much to the players even though there was no prize money. They were playing for something bigger than just themselves and you could really feel that. I think they should introduce a 4 person team matchplay event next time. That would be amazing.
I got discovery+ just to be able to watch all the 4 days. Really enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed it, to the point I went to play golf and she left it on and kept texting me the updates! Recently picked up the game again after leaving as a junior about 12 years ago (I'm 29 now)
We actually had the full live golf on demand for free from 9 in the morning to the end, it was great! Oh, I am from Germany! I have to say this final round was one of the best Golf I've seen in a while, the Golf was great, the course was great, the crwed was fantastic, the podium was great and I'd love how much those players cared!
Caddies don’t have to be from the same country. There are so many American athletes that compete for other countries in the Olympics. But caddies should definitely get a medal
Yesterday was just watching Rick on the pod saying that they should give golf more coverage and respect in the Olympics otherwise take it out entirely Quite the 180 there Rick!!!
Love the concept of other golf events. Make it like Augusta drive, chip and putt. Have a short game event or some sort. Multiple stations, players forced to get up and down around riviera. Have the long drive competition.
The Australian Open is now a combined men's and women's tournament, drew a great crowd especially on the weekend. Only problem there was 2 cut lines and its played over 2 courses
I really like what you're saying Rick, so how about, the mixed singles and mixed pairs and run it as a shot gun start, it contains the time that is on course and 18 holes shotgun gives plenty of team slots.
What i like about Rick is that he’s not afraid to admit he was wrong. In this case like many of us who expected the olympics to be a mess or boring , turns out it was awesome ! not perfect but exciting for sure.
Ideas for Olympic Golf events -Men’s, ladies & mixed pairs par 3 course event…. 2 x18 hole rounds -long drive contest -pairs team events… 2x 18 holes -4 person teams 2x18 holes -4 person mixed (2 ladies, 2 guys) one round best total score
Long Drive - tick. What about a closest to the pin event? 5 rounds, 5 different tee boxes from like 100 yards to 230+ yards, whoever has the closest/lowest cumulative score after 5 rounds wins.
Olympics - long drive, closest to the pin, keep the 4 day 18 holes (marathon) but maybe add three 9 hole days where only the top half of players make the cut. Players are rewarded for being aggressive.
Note - for soccer, it is U-23 (i think, could be less) and they’re allowed 2-3 “veteran” players. So it’s basically a junior world cup. So maybe you could do one pro golfer one amateur/rookie
Some great ideas in there for the next time, I'm with you there needs to be more events to add to the wow factor for golf. For sure keep the singles but they can add way more as you where pointing out, it even brings in other golfers America could of had Bryson, Australia could of had cam smith etc... the Olympics is the perfect place to show cast golf to non golfers and make it a really fun thing to get more people involved.
I think they need to add more golf games to Olympics. Long drive, approach accuracy, putting. These are all skills on their own and are more in line with what Olympic Games are all about. And some kind of team match as well. The standard 4 round stroke play is just another golf tournament.
I am shocked that the television coverage there was so poor. I consider myself lucky then, that we had every player's introduction and opening tee shots. Coverage started at 3 or 4:00 am and went all the way to the finish.
They could have pairs of men and women play together, from different tees, but same pins…and they could play stroke play, but then best ball between the pair for a combined score. The only problem is, sometimes best ball requires strategy, like giving up a bogey putt to give a line to the other’s birdie putt…
I’d like to see team golf in the Olympics, a mix of best ball, scramble, alternate shot, match play with a bracket. The final round was great, but it’s too much of an ordinary golf event. Make it unique to the Olympics and something you only see every 4 years.
Agree that the Olympics was great golf. Everything you want wrapped up in a event. However, maybe we set the bar low for expectations? Given we wanted more than just stroke play event
BTS pop band, the lads were all not required to do their military service, for servicers to music but they all went and did their time as a point of national pride.
Okay, long drive, speed Golf, mixed event, team event, and 72 holes. You could get about 10 or 15 golfers from each country and you could have more Olympians. … the issue is. Are there 10 or 15 Olympic level golfers from all these countries?
Coaches in the Olympics do not have to be from the country of the team they coach. And coaches do not get medals. Caddies would be considered a coach more than a team. In rowing the Cox is the tempo keeper which is a required team member. A caddie is technically not required for the golfer to do his sport.
WHY ISNT THERE A TEAM EVENT!?!??!?!?!?! 6 vs 6 (country vs country)... take the best 5 out of 6 from each day, run a bracket like basketball or volleyball. And they don't have to play consecutive days!
I've felt the same all year but then on Sunday I had my best round of my life. It just came out of nowhere. I can't explain what was different this time but this time the ball kept going into the hole. Keep giving yourself opportunities and one day it clicks and everything works.
You don't get the Golf Channel in the UK? I watched the entire round. Tommy lost it on #17, he went with a lofted wedge on a down slope, I think it was a mistake he should have used a 9 iron. A mental error cost him.
If you want to add some additional varieties to the Olympics, speed golf seems like a good one. Combines running with skill, has some funky rules, only problem would likely be trying to make sure people don’t get in each other’s way.
Can't do the caddie requirement. Team gymnastics don't always have same-country coaches, same for other sports. If a player has to switch caddies just for the olympics, they might as well not go. Scottie had an absolutely horrendous round without his caddie at the PGA Championship. It would give a big advantage to players with same-country caddies. I also don't think pro athletes should be in the olympics at all. When it was amateurs, it was much better and more competitive.

I saw the shot from around 40m and it was amazing how he managed to stop the ball on the green🤩
She is the best cohost. Need to have her on more.
Love her voice
She's great but guy is the best co host on any golf podcast
Women's English accent sounds like SO much effort... Sa-ur-day
It's actually the Rick Shiel's Golf Show when she is on. Rick finally gets to host his show!
I like Guy. New series. Team golf. Rick/Sophie Guy/Iona. Best of 5 rounds.
Love Sophie as a co-host ❤
Agree that caddies should be from the same country and should be given a medal. Referees get medals in football … couldn’t agree more with Rick
Great to hear Sophie again.

I have been on site and it was amazing. The fans were superb and very supportive to the players. It was a big party 🤩

Definitely the best last round of the year , I thought the US open was good but this had more potential outcomes
I watched all 4 days. Truly fantastic from start to finish. Was cheering on Tommy like a madman!
Rick makes a lot of really good points about the future of golf in the Olympics
I watched all 4 days of the golf online and I’m so glad I did, was the best golf event of the year and it’s not close
I was there 🔥
The atmosphere was amazing
I got discovery+ just to be able to watch all the 4 days. Really enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed it, to the point I went to play golf and she left it on and kept texting me the updates! Recently picked up the game again after leaving as a junior about 12 years ago (I'm 29 now)
Watched a lot of the golf from Australia, and the vibe was great, very very exciting. The course looked amazing!!
When Guy is away the show becomes what it should be, The Rick Shiels Podcast.
We actually had the full live golf on demand for free from 9 in the morning to the end, it was great! Oh, I am from Germany! Sophie! Can we please get Sophie on more often? Cheers from Charleston, SC!
Nah we need Guy's goofy face
Caddies don’t have to be from the same country. There are so many American athletes that compete for other countries in the Olympics. But caddies should definitely get a medal
I agree with Rick's hot take about caddies, same country, and earning medals.
aww Sophie thank goodness
Thank goodness indeed. It's always better having Rick hosting his own show.
All the golf.
Stroke play.
Match play.
Par 3.
2 man Scramble.
Long Drive.
Mixed Scramble
Speed Golf
Schefflers iron/wedge game was unbelievable. Ben Hogan settings
Yesterday was just watching Rick on the pod saying that they should give golf more coverage and respect in the Olympics otherwise take it out entirely
Quite the 180 there Rick!!!
Scottie Scheffler is such an old soul. It's crazy he's only 28 with his status and accomplishments
Love the concept of other golf events. Make it like Augusta drive, chip and putt. Have a short game event or some sort. Multiple stations, players forced to get up and down around riviera. Have the long drive competition.
I love Sophie
The Australian Open is now a combined men's and women's tournament, drew a great crowd especially on the weekend. Only problem there was 2 cut lines and its played over 2 courses

-long drive contest
-pairs team events… 2x 18 holes
-4 person teams 2x18 holes
-4 person mixed (2 ladies, 2 guys) one round best total score
Would love to see a par 3 comp. They could have temporary tees to make all holes par 3. Would make for great watching.
Long Drive - tick.
What about a closest to the pin event? 5 rounds, 5 different tee boxes from like 100 yards to 230+ yards, whoever has the closest/lowest cumulative score after 5 rounds wins.
Yes Rick every shot mattered for Gold ,Silver and Bronze. Just like every shot matters for teams on final day of LIV.
Scottie is just so good right now
Long drive can have a similar format as javelin throwing or shot put with different rounds where the longest counts.
Love a Sophie pod ❤
Olympics - long drive, closest to the pin, keep the 4 day 18 holes (marathon) but maybe add three 9 hole days where only the top half of players make the cut. Players are rewarded for being aggressive.

You missed the chance of players like bryson going for the double 😅 Regular and Long Drive
Let’s get some speed golf in the Olympics!
We need to be able to watch it
17:08 I was saying this the other day. Maybe not everything you did, but maybe have a one-day Par 3 tournament as well in LA 2028?
Ricky = GOAT
I think they need to add more golf games to Olympics. Long drive, approach accuracy, putting. These are all skills on their own and are more in line with what Olympic Games are all about. And some kind of team match as well. The standard 4 round stroke play is just another golf tournament.
Whats w/ all the hate for Guy?
Mini golf in olympics !
Mixed pairs, Texas Scramble be good fun
Class act
I am shocked that the television coverage there was so poor. I consider myself lucky then, that we had every player's introduction and opening tee shots. Coverage started at 3 or 4:00 am and went all the way to the finish.
Love for yout to ask Tommy about the midset of second shot in 18. Trying to understand the shot shape...
All great ideas
Golf should be Quota (cumulative points given for Par. Birdie, Eagles) for 2 rounds then cut to final round of stroke play.
Let's get some team medals in LA. Top average placement of countries who bring 3 golfers.
Men Golf rick, Men Golf. Ladies still to come ;)
They could have pairs of men and women play together, from different tees, but same pins…and they could play stroke play, but then best ball between the pair for a combined score.
The only problem is, sometimes best ball requires strategy, like giving up a bogey putt to give a line to the other’s birdie putt…

Long drive, scramble, and team strokeplay. Two or three rounds.
Wish it was team event. Alternate shot. I do admit Sunday was crazy individual efforts but that's an outlier.
Agree that the Olympics was great golf. Everything you want wrapped up in a event. However, maybe we set the bar low for expectations? Given we wanted more than just stroke play event
Sophie is the BEST...!!!
Why doesn’t the PGA tour consider bringing long drive events with them to tournaments? Doing it on a Wednesday
I think I'd like the main event for golf in the olympics be match play instead. Makes it more interesting.

Future Olympics need singles stroke play AND team match play on successive weekends.
Sophie "didnt he?" "Isnt it?" "Arent there?"
There’s a much better dynamic and conversation flow with this splendid cohost.
Agreed. Soo much better.
Discovery+ has all the sports from the olympics including all four days of live golf.
Available in the UK 🇬🇧
I just love when Sophie is on your show, colab more with her please!
Sixes is absolutely the future of golf
I had to uses VPN to find it on TV , too bad.
Long drive would be fun. A team event and skills event.
scotty is not dominating. he is just playing against scrubs.
Golf has 2 medals needs more formats, however golf shone, outstanding
WHY ISNT THERE A TEAM EVENT!?!??!?!?!?! 6 vs 6 (country vs country)... take the best 5 out of 6 from each day, run a bracket like basketball or volleyball. And they don't have to play consecutive days!
When we haven't got Guy, we go for DEI.
Long drive, accuracy, drive chip putt
And change the scoring TV graphic. "He had 6 green boxes, 5 blue boxes and 7 red boxes" and all the hole numbers were in grey boxes. Confusing
Im so bad at getting ahead of myself in golf, its death for your score and i know it but geez its hard not to when you have a good round happening
I've felt the same all year but then on Sunday I had my best round of my life. It just came out of nowhere. I can't explain what was different this time but this time the ball kept going into the hole. Keep giving yourself opportunities and one day it clicks and everything works.
I thought you would talk about how/why Bryson didn’t get an invite
I love her! But the audio of her voice sounds very staticky
It's not a bloody golf tournament. You could say the same for any sport, including several disciplines.
There was no BBC coverage of the golf, so didn't see or hear anything about it. Scrap it and put Long Driving in instead.
Match play but first person to lose a hole gets eliminated. Bracket knock out format. Takes place over 1 day.
You don't get the Golf Channel in the UK? I watched the entire round. Tommy lost it on #17, he went with a lofted wedge on a down slope, I think it was a mistake he should have used a 9 iron. A mental error cost him.
Tom Kim already stated that wasn’t why he was crying and I’m pretty sure he has til like 33 years old to get a medal
Maybe have the mixed pairs/pairs as amateur golfers
I thought Rick was just hyping up guy before he came on screen at the start but I was surprised
Thank god it’s Sophie! Make her a permanent cohost.
100% agreed. Rick hosting is how it should be. When Sophie is on the podcast is so much better and just confirms my thoughts.....
No thanks
If you want to add some additional varieties to the Olympics, speed golf seems like a good one. Combines running with skill, has some funky rules, only problem would likely be trying to make sure people don’t get in each other’s way.
Did Rick just call Tom Kim North Korean? Lmao
Can't do the caddie requirement. Team gymnastics don't always have same-country coaches, same for other sports. If a player has to switch caddies just for the olympics, they might as well not go. I love watching Rory lose.
you know its still going on right?
Doubled up RUclips adverts really trying to drive the people away from the censored platform
I couldn't take it anymore and bought the premium thing. I hate giving Google any money but RUclips without it is almost unusable.
Man Sophie Walker is just so easy to listen too. And if I'm being honest, she ain't bad on the eyes either.
🤦🏻
