F1rst!!!🎉🎉🎉 to my own marathon!!! I’m pretty sure this marathon was close to a perfect 25 minutes like my last one I love the first song, I’m a believer, in so many ways. The first of which the heavy guitar that opens it, and then the upfront bass that takes lead. I’d love to hear what else you guys heard. I’m driving right now, so I can’t properly respond. But I’ll say this about the second song: when I was planning this marathon and picking this song, I listened to it quite a number of times. It was only when I put this marathon together, that I understood the lyrics in this song, which say, “with her long, black hair, hanging down beneath the red light…” I never heard, or understood it before then. 14:00- now I can’t unhear it 17:00- The transition between Chris’s voice and the horn 21:14- And then, who could’ve predicted an exeunt lead by the 🎹 flamenco dancing with the bass drums and then horns and then a little classical guitar. 26:20-not gonna lie: I was waiting for the tssssssssss 36:00- I’m not sure really how to describe my love for this band. When I listen to them, I feel like I’m listening to a fairytale. 40:00- As for David Gray, well, I’ve known him since the late 90s and I got to see him in 2018 on his mutineers tour. But this song go back and listen to this song and listen to it as if being the dying thoughts of a man in war. His “repo man,” is death. 43:00- it’s the lyrics, Nick. They’re a metaphor at one’s dying moment. I made this, before yours 45:38 And, Nick, I hesitated in choosing DG-even though he’s one of my favorite artists precisely because he’s not that flashy or complex, but his lyrics are in my opinion top-tier. Thank you. Great reaction.
So happy to see you have Midlake in your marathon! I happened to hear Van Occupanther playing in a book/record store and I had to have it. Saw them live last year and they put on an excellent show.
I can’t believe someone requested Midlake!! They are really fantastic with beautiful harmonies and such an interesting unique sound. I highly recommend that whole album. I saw them live last year and they put on a fantastic show.
Tears For Fears are so much more than their hit singles, some of their best work have never been released as singles, check out Start Of The Breakdown from their debut album, The Working Hour from the second album, Badman's Song from the third, Brian Wilson Said from the Elemental album, Me ANd My Big Ideas from the Raoul album, the title tack on Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, and The Tipping Point from their 2022 album, the production on their songs is second to none.
I love your reactions to tears for fears so much! Thank you for commenting and listening to these living legends. Please, I would very much like to hear and see your opinion on their performance of the song Working hour in 1985 (Live at Massey Hall).
I'm a TFF fan. I like Bee Gees, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, and The Fixx for what it's worth. TFF are great live. I'm looking forward to seeing them in July. Ooooh. I really like the song after TFF. I've never heard it before.
Tears for fears never missed. All their albums are jewels even if different, from The hurting to The tipping point and going though Songs from the Big chair, Sowing the seeds of love, Raoul and the King's of Spain, etc... Midlake, I love that album so much. The cover art is weird but the music is soo good.
Great to see a Midlake reaction - a first that I know of! Apparently the singer on this track,Tim Smith, was a big Jethro Tull fan, and I think you can hear a little of that in this album especially. If you get the chance check out 'Head Home' from the same album, which is a stand-out track for me. It features the 'best worst guitar solo' I've ever heard, which I reckon if you took it out from the rest of the mix would be little more than a few random, off key notes, but deep in the mix sounds fantastic!
@@falcongal63 I did right after the marathon. I feel like I should've heard of them before but I guess they didn't come across my path. To be fair I was deep into post-rock and math rock at the time.
Growing up in northern NY a short drive to Montreal, Chris de Burgh would get a lot of airtime on the Rock Stations in that city. I saw him perform there years ago. Spanish Train and Crusader were a couple of my favorite albums although some of his later recording did get more mainstream attention. Thanks for the reaction.
That Chris deburgh album is all pretty great. Last night is representative of the whole album. Well worth a listen. Listen to the Traveller, the last time i cried, don't pay the ferryman , crusader, high on emotion, transmission ends, the getaway from other albums. All great.
Heard of all of these artists except for Midlake. Never heard any of these cuts ēxcept for David Gray. Nice playlist and good flow. Midlake reminded me of Radiohead a little. Very nice.
A very cool marathon Travis! I was drawn to the marathon mainly because I had never heard Giant and Midlake, and I love David Gray! It's funny, I've seen the Giant album artwork often, but never delved inside. I liked the 80's rock feel. Midlake blew me away with a kind of a Fleetwood Mac vibe. I will be checking that album out. It's a shame Nick was a tad underwhelmed by David Gray, but not surprising as I think he's the kind of musician that slowly infiltrates your soul. I've seen him in concert just once, in Manchester around 2011 or so. It was such a great gig, intimate yet powerful. His band were top notch too. If I had to choose a favourite David Gray album it would probably be 'A New Day at Midnight'. Thanks Nick.
Giant unfortunately was late to the party. Had their debut been released 3-5 years earlier, one can't help but think they would've had more success. The style of Foreigner/Loverboy/Night Ranger/Survivor had more than worn out its welcome by 1989. The band featured brothers Dann (lead vocals/guitar) and David (drums) Huff. Dann would go on to become one of the most in-demand session guitarists in the country. He also would write and produce numerous albums for rock, pop and country artists.
I´m really enjoying your channel - here are some suggestions/requests 'Genremäßig quer durch den Gemüsegarten' (Nick will get the expression, at least i hope so, lol) Gotan Project - La Vigüela (2006) Héroes del Silencio - Entre dos tierras (1990) Quincy Jones - Ai no corrida (1981) Chris De Burgh - Spanish Train (1975) Annabel Lamb - The Ghost of you (1988) Mecano - Hijo de la Luna (1986) Terry Callier - Love Theme from Spartacus (Zero 7 Remix) (1998) Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft - Try (2002) I´m pretty sure both of you would enjoy these tunes ;)

Tears For Fears can do no wrong. Seen them many times live and will see them a million more times if I can.
Tears' newest works is exceptional as well. Thanx

Introduced to Midlake by a friend about 12 years ago. Fell in love with them instantly. Such a superb unique sound strong in melodies
The entire Elemental album is fantastic. I'd suggest checking it out for yourself. I play the album all the time, it's amazing!
Yes. It’s my favorite TFF album

Wow, Giant. I haven’t heard them in a long, long time. Dan Huff is a studio musician, he has played with everyone from Chicago to Amy Grant.

Midlake was a happy surprise to me I really dug that track.
That whole album by Midlake is great. You should check it out!

Nick, Nice to see Giant on here. Kind of a lost band with a huge sound.
14:00- listening again, Nick

Great one Travis. My favorites were in the middle I really really loved the Midlake very compelling. Tears for Fears 👍👍👍. Nice delivery Nick.

I saw DG back in 2016, the Mutineers tour.
If you wanna check out Chris de Burgh, try his 1979 album "Crusader".
Or his 1976 album Spanish Train.
Freakin geeks pulling through.
Wow. No comments on David Gray…
