@@NoraLovesBendHomes You're welcome! I truly have learned so much from your videos. I can't wait to meet you in person. Anita and I are trying to plan a trip in early December. I'll let you know if it works out. 🤞
I always planned on retiring to central oregon (lived on west side of oregon my whole life) however my mom moved there and in her older years insurance became an issue. Clinics will not take straight Medicare and the advantage plans are becoming difficult at bend hospitals due to advantage denials of skilled nursing . I am healthy but for an aging adult it’s a scary place.
I really think realitors dont understand retires. Realitors always say how much bars, resturants and extreme sports are in the area. I have done my share of extreme sports and have slowed down. It would be nice to know low impact sports. In my case I want fishing and easy hiking, where I currently live there are 10K mountains 3 miles out my back doors and I am at 4600 ft. But no long have the desire to go rambling up and down them. What are winters like in Bend? Is there a lot of snow? is there a lot of rain,
Hi "Frodo"😃 thanks for your comment! Bend is a great place no matter how athletic you are! You don't have to do "extreme" sports to enjoy the outdoors. You can walk the many trials, paddle or kayak on the lakes or river, golf, snowshoe or x-country ski in the winter, camping. I'm nearing "retirement" age myself and I love living here. WINTER....well, this year it's been colder than average and snowing later in the year (like yesterday😜). Statistically we average about 30" of snow in town per year, but since I've lived in Bend (2015) we've had two "snowmagedeon" years and several really mild ones too. It varies a lot from year to year. One thing I will say...our snow tends to be DRY and not too much trouble for driving. HERE'S a video I made about Winter Weather. ruclips.net/video/Ppt4bbmbL04/видео.html
by the way...we do have GREAT FISHING on rivers and lakes...there are many things to do in this beautiful area for folks like you who want a slower pace and more mellow activities. You should come for a visit and see for yourself😀
I’m from Klamath Falls, OR and I’m now retired from the Army. Since I joined in 1983, a LOT of things have changed and shifted since I left and it’s very sad. Bend has been getting a large influx of liberals whose cost of living in large cities along I-5 have become too high for their budgets. The Oregon High Desert is no joke and a big difference to the mild winters on the other side of the Cascades (west side). There’s nearly zero humidity on the desert which is around 4000 feet in elevation so bring lots of lotion for newcomers, you’ll need it. Usually the liberals will call it quits after or during their first winter here, it’s not fun when everything is frozen and it takes 20 minutes just to clear your windows and get the car warmed up. And don’t think your cute “all wheel drive” SUV can handle driving into forests, Fremont forest is nasty and when you get stuck (and you will) be sure to have a 3 day emergency bag in your car and please don’t be wearing sweat clothes and flip flops when they finally find you a couple days later. And no, cell phones don’t work inside the forests, that’s why we own CB or multi-band radios with a good antenna. Make sure you keep Casey Ladelle’s tow service phone number on speed dial because you’ll be needing his services, you can find his videos on YT to give you an idea of how hilarious the unprepared can be. If you’re accustomed to prompt Amazon or eBay deliveries, hang that up, it’ll take a couple more days at least to get things, a lot longer during heavy snow storms. Addition; after re-reading my post I think many might take some offense to the scenarios I described. Oregon has various environmental conditions that attract many people and they rarely discuss how life is “over the mountains” on the High Desert so when the time comes to look for a new town to live in where the cost of living is lower yet still within a couple hours drive of their former city, they pack up and take the plunge. So when a more soft Oregonian sees most people on the High Desert driving larger 4x4 trucks, there’s a good reason why they own those but it won’t make sense until the first winter. Most of us own 2 different sets of tires specifically for driving in ice, snow and summer conditions. Growing up in Klamath County my dad had a Jeep 4x4 truck then a Honda civic station wagon so we could save money on gas. I constantly heard stories about friends getting into car accidents when someone didn’t have any experience driving on icy roads or during blizzard like conditions (which didn’t happen often) so it’s my hope that people take things serious because 911 won’t always be able to get to you in time due to road conditions and distance so pre-planning and preparation is critical. And yes, most of us own a firearm and we always take one when we venture into the woods because Oregon has a lot wildlife that can be unpredictable in situations. And if you move to a small town outside of Bend and lack any form of preparation for a strong winter, the locals will express their concerns in some way because they know they may be called to help you someday because it’s usually a life or death situation and they will help when needed but it also puts them at risk. Criminal activity is extremely low on the High Desert due to many factors and that’s something that attracts people to move here. I can say that the summers are like heaven most of the time and the dry air makes cold weather more to.enable compared to States like Kentucky and Illinois where the humidity is pretty high year round. As a teen I enjoyed the snow storms, especially at night. I used to take our German shepherd for a short walk at night and watching the snow fall while illuminated by the street lights was very calming and tranquil to me, along with the snow, things were very quiet. If you plan to retire in our area, you can’t go wrong. All the medical services you’re accustomed to is available in Bend or K-Falls and the demographic of the population in our area is good, honorable hardworking people. Hope this gets someone’s attention on good and bad conditions so you don’t get hurt or stranded. If you have problems with arthritis or respiratory issues, the climate is very helpful. I wish all of you my best and please enjoy life as much as you’re able, changing your environment also does great things emotionally because it gives you a fresh start.
I grew up in bend. And yes I may sound like a boomer, but bend is ruined for me. The influx of rich out of staters has turned it into a fake, artificially quaint, very expensive area. They made it into a version of what they wanted. It is one of the worst places to raise a family unless you’re wealthy and don’t mind entitled rich people every where. And don’t get me started on Sisters!
Thanks for watching! Yes, for sure Bend has changed. Since I live here...I don't see the "fake, artificially quaint" that you do. It's my home and I love it here! Absolutely, it's expensive, but so is every other desirable mountain town in the Western US.
And then there’s the politics of Oregon. Portland will be making all the decisions for the state. I moved away due to the politics and taxes when I retired.
Yes, there are many statewide decisions that affect us over here in Bend. Not always a good thing that's for sure. But I have to say there is nothing like the beauty of the mountains, rivers and lakes in this area. ☺️
So, tax wise, Oregon is not a good option for retirees. Like you said, if the retirees feel 25 and want to be active then Bend, Oregon is the place to be.
Yes, biking, hiking, fishing, just walking on the trails, pickleball, yoga, gym exercise...all levels of activities. You don't need to be a "super athlete" to love living in Bend! Great food truck and Tap House scene too. Always new businesses coming to town and that makes it feel lively and vibrant😍
I have a primary residence in Florida, and I'm planning to buy a secondary home in the next 3 months. ( I am retire) will I have to pay those taxes, you mention in the begging of your video?
Hi M. Skinner! Which TAXES are you talking about? Of course you'd be paying Property Taxes and if you earn Oregon Income, you'd most likely pay some income tax, but it would be best to ask a qualified Tax Consultant about that for your individual situation. If you'd like help finding a property in Central Oregon send an email to me...noralovesbendhomes@gmail.com or give me a call 541-728-4020.
Since 2018, Oregon has a privilege tax on the sale of any new car. They don’t call it a sales tax because they expect the dealer to pay it. The dealer pays it out of your money, of course. There’s also a “corporate activity tax” levied on businesses grossing over $1M as a percentage of sales. They don’t call this a sales tax but it gets passed along and paid by the customer. Also a straight-up tax on bicycles because they hate bicycles here I guess. So yeah, that’s how they pay for stuff.

That's definitely worth looking into. I wasn't aware of this issue 😕
Bend is looking a lot like Portland, with homeless cretins lining the streets. I have had ZERO trouble with Medicare Advantage in Eastern Oregon.

The SmartAsset is pretty useless unless you want a Financial Advisor.
Agree to disagree. I think they have some helpful information. Thanks for watching. Let me know if I can help in any way 👍
you did not mention the estate tax.............highest in the country.
Yes, Oregon does have an estate tax if you inherit more than $500,000

Well, it's not the very best for taxes, but taxes aren't usually the only consideration.

If new car or new RV is taxed, I bought a new pickup and taxed on it.
Oregon has NO SALES TAX, so NO, you wouldn't pay sales tax on a vehicle purchase. in Oregon.
