Personally I don't believe there are any bad fonts by default. Depending on functionality, aesthetics, audience, medium, reason or intention e.t.c, every font fits a particular case. Some might fit well for a majority of daily purposes and some might not. In as much as there are standing rules for good prints, signage, screen e. t. c a good or bad font ends up been a function of purpose and choice. I like your choices though and Thanks for introducing some new fonts I don't use but will definitely try. Cheers.
@@kamilaantezana6374 I've been in goth ands and there are some fonts that are naturally curly or curvy that are perfectly acceptable for band logos or album titles, etc. I think the one thing weighing Curlz down is how said curlz are implemented. They are very basic and boring and repetitive, and take no chances. Not very stylistic. Just like the same thing over and over and over. I do like some things that are based on hand done lettering from albums by the Cure, but they are of course based on hand-drawn lettering so they have more individuality by nature than these do.
Stephen Bloom That’s implicit in any discussion of design-that it’s subjective. Shouldn’t be necessary to state it. You’ve got to bring your own ‘processing’ when you take in ‘information.’
I actually do like your choice of typefaces a lot, however I dislike the totalitarian character of the statements "must use" as well as "stay away from". Form follows function - you do not pick a typeface to use in a design because it's pretty and fits the layout, but because it supports the goal and function of the layout, and you choose each time anew - and, in that regard, even Comic Sans can have its purpose. To generally rule out or count in a typeface one must or mustn't use is not good design. As I said, I do love your choice of 'good' typefaces though, and I like how you introduce them and give additional infos as well

Class Graphics I think that Impact can still be useful. I love this channel, but sort of disagree that a font is “bad” because it totally depends on the application of the font-and that’s where you as the designer come in. I find it a pretty good option when I’m using for a more graphic application such as with a pattern fill or mask where I want the outline of the letters to be easily identifiable. I see what he means by the fact that the “bad” fonts might have connections to certain uses and/or been overused, but at the end of the day, fonts convey meaning and there might be appropriate times to keep using them :)
Yeah the font itself isn't actually that bad, it's quite a decent font in retrospect. It's just the label and 'image' that has been given to it in recent years. Many people will see a design with impact one, and in their minds subconsciously or not, they will have a different emotion or feeling given to them, simply because of stigma. Not everyone of course, just internet savvy people
lavieenlavande Now that I think about it, perhaps I was swayed a little too much by Tom's inclusion of it on his "bad" list and I agree that it is not so much the font itself but the application and environment in which it is used. Also, judging by Tom's follow-up comment, I think he has also slightly softened his position on it. I think it's good to have these design discussions from time to time and I very much appreciate your comments!
Yes typography can be quite a polarising subject, and quite rightly so. I keep emphasising how it can make or break a design, so it is very much important. The thing is, you need to consider your audience, and what the font and typeface says in a non verbal manner. I will be looking to go over this in more detail in a forthcoming video, on choosing fonts for your designs
Class Graphics cool! I’m glad Tom commented, too. I totally agree that audience and purpose play the biggest role in choosing typography. The font you choose has a huge impact (no pun intended) on the readability and how a piece feels. I think Tom had great choices for his top and bottom fonts in the list, but I just wanted to chime in that using a font isn’t bad if it’s the right one for the job so you shouldn’t feel bad about having used it in projects :)
I used to change with: Bradley Hand > Oregano Impact > Bebas Neue or Oswald Papyrus > Montserrat Courier New > Courier (original) or Source Code Pro or American Typewriter Curlz > Lobster or Blenda Script Comic Sans > Comic Neue or Tekton Monotype Corsiva > Alex Brush or Zapf Chancery Brush Script > Playball Mistral > Kaushan Script Blackoak > Alfa Slab One or Rockwell Extra Bold Arial > Helvetica Neue or Roboto or Akzidenz Grotesk Gill Sans > Proxima Nova or Myriad or Gotham Times New Roman > Minion or Adobe Caslon
I was going to say... It's primarily used for albums (Monk and Backstreet famously used the font and those colors for their albums), but the legibility is fine. I'd strike this one from the list
Totally agree about the legibility. I found myself having to look each letter up and down to figure out what it was. That said, in fairly large print applications, with very strong contrast, I’ve seen it look beautiful and surprisingly legible (I think the designer of the example I’m thinking of edited the type a bit or did something with the tracking or kerning though)
Your choice of fonts is good but also very standard. And those absolute statements are just wrong. I love using Comic Sans just because everyone hates it. Even people with no design experience hate it because they are told to. The font is actually well made, it has a harmonic appearance in long texts and a good readability, and it works perfect in... comics. Courier New is a beautiful font if used cleverly. Why does everybody still choose Helvetica? It’s heavily overused and in most cases just a lazy choice. I could go on. But my point is - there is no recipe for choosing a font. I’d almost like to say there are no bad fonts just bad typography.
I hsve been viewing all of yout videos since discovering your channel (love them, by the way). I agree with your selection. I am surprised, however, that Helvetica did not make your list of must haves. True, it may be overused but often with good reason, it just works. Aileron is also interesting. I never quite looked at it from your perspective. There are subtle likenesses from other fonts such as Raleway. The letter "L" for example has that same curvature at the bottom of the stroke but others resemble Helvetica. I'll see about using it in some of my designs.
fonts create different feels tho. It doesn't matter if its a "bad" or "good" font as long as it translate to the goal or vision of the designer and/or brand. like you dont use Curlz to a business or formal brand....You dont stay away from it, just use it wisely.
satori: use these fonts that aren't installed on your computer by default me: let me select this font on my computer called cou- satori: no that's bad how about imp- satori: no stay away from that
I design racing car skins in videogames, and Impact is really practical for that. It doesnt really look like the meme font to me without the white and black colour scheme
Great video, thanks! Great fonts! Downloaded the good ones. The IPadOS still have the Bradley Hand, Courier New and Papyrus...the Comic-ish is called Chalkboard, probably changed names for keeping us using it looolz.
Your font videos are awesome! I totally nicked your "subscribe" watermark btw. I used Arial bold, and it took me a while to get everything centered. Yours looks better though :-)
Ya, I was trying to use it for everything, and then realised the text was so hard to read because the lower cases have a really tiny bottom portion, they are good for decorative text, but not for reading
Funny enough Monotype corsiva used to be one of my best fonts till I watched this video. How can I unsee this 😭 Ps: I loved how blunt you were with your font reviews. It really helped a lot. Thanks
There are no Bad Fonts. Just bad designers. A good typographer can read the character of a typeface and know how to leverage that character to help the content shine. Every font has it's correct usage, it just takes a discerning eye to decide when the time is right. For the 'bad' fonts, that time is almost never, but it doesn't make them bad.
@@benridler268 Algerian could be used as a drop cap in a book to evoke an fin de siecle frame of mind. Curlz could be used playfully in a n invitation to a child's party. Jokeman could be used in a retro 90s colour explosion. Easy. A good designer like a good craftsman, doesn't blame the tools, they know when and how to use them.
Logical question, and I hope you reply. Can I use them commercially, for example in a logo gig at fiverr? If not, if I convert a font to outline before handing over the project, which means I won't give the font, will I still be in trouble?
I think Roboto is a good one too
Nice video ♥
Yeah that one is pretty solid. I would have liked to make a list of 25 fonts ideally, but had little time!
Satori Graphics make a part two! :D This topic is aways interesting
I used to change with:
Bradley Hand > Oregano
Impact > Bebas Neue or Oswald
Papyrus > Montserrat
Courier New > Courier (original) or Source Code Pro or American Typewriter
Curlz > Lobster or Blenda Script
Comic Sans > Comic Neue or Tekton
Monotype Corsiva > Alex Brush or Zapf Chancery
Brush Script > Playball
Mistral > Kaushan Script
Blackoak > Alfa Slab One or Rockwell Extra Bold
Arial > Helvetica Neue or Roboto or Akzidenz Grotesk
Gill Sans > Proxima Nova or Myriad or Gotham
Times New Roman > Minion or Adobe Caslon
6:35 lol I guess you proved you really can’t read anything with ‘’triple CONDENSED gothic’’ by calling it triple CONSENDED gothic
I guess I should go back to school and study English a wee bit more? 🙃
He's being too condensed to us.
wow aren’t you a very CONDESCENDING person
Glad I stumbled upon your site! Nice tips and thanks, I subscribed.
Hey that's awesome. Welcome and I hope you enjoy my content from here on out
Your choice of fonts is good but also very standard.
I would really recommend Product Sans to any designer.
Google's font?
Do check Montserrat too. Great font.
I’m so proud of myself that I’m using the right fonts! Whoohooo
haha yeah that is always a good sign Alicia! 👍
fonts create different feels tho. It doesn't matter if its a "bad" or "good" font as long as it translate to the goal or vision of the designer and/or brand. like you dont use Curlz to a business or formal brand....You dont stay away from it, just use it wisely.
Does anyone know what font is used at 0:17 for the "Satori Graphics" text ? This would be so helpfull ! Thanks
Yay so glad I generally use the first 8 of the good fonts 🙃
That is a good sign for you lol, have a great weekend!
1:44 ugh!!!! kerning
Ok, among the good ones I knew only one of them 😅 Mayne that'll help not struggle as much as I did with choosing fonts.
satori: use these fonts that aren't installed on your computer by default
me: let me select this font on my computer called cou-
satori: no that's bad
how about imp-
satori: no stay away from that
XD
In his defense several of these are free like beer, have to disagree with Impact though, pairs nicely with Mistral.
i'd tell my supervisor not to use Impact anymore lol.
we often use Futura though and i'm gonna get those fonts you mentioned. thank you!
haha thanks for the comment, I'm always happy to hep Lara
I design racing car skins in videogames, and Impact is really practical for that. It doesnt really look like the meme font to me without the white and black colour scheme
Great video, thanks! Great fonts! Downloaded the good ones. The IPadOS still have the Bradley Hand, Courier New and Papyrus...the Comic-ish is called Chalkboard, probably changed names for keeping us using it looolz.
Your font videos are awesome! I totally nicked your "subscribe" watermark btw. I used Arial bold, and it took me a while to get everything centered. Yours looks better though :-)
Brandon Grotesque is such an amazing font. However, the lower case is hard to read when used as the font of a paragraph.
Yeah it can be tricky in that sense, that's for sure.
Ya, I was trying to use it for everything, and then realised the text was so hard to read because the lower cases have a really tiny bottom portion, they are good for decorative text, but not for reading
5:20 peep red velvet lol
lol :P
Funny enough Monotype corsiva used to be one of my best fonts till I watched this video. How can I unsee this 😭
Ps: I loved how blunt you were with your font reviews. It really helped a lot.
Thanks
It might have a use lol.. but hey thanks for the comment Esther
Glenn Toddun I challenge you to design something good using Algerian or Curlz. Better yet, use joker!
@Glenn Toddun: well said. I happen to have had occasion to use Black Oak in a design, and I thought that it suited the particular purpose admirably.
Logical question, and I hope you reply. Can I use them commercially, for example in a logo gig at fiverr? If not, if I convert a font to outline before handing over the project, which means I won't give the font, will I still be in trouble? (I'm talking about fonts only, the logo itself, drawing, ideas, etc are all mine and original).
Amazing tutorials bro, I've checked out most of your videos and they are absolutely amazing and easy to understand. And with this video there is one thing I would really like to know, the whole 'negative' colours in the text(the blue and yellow) matching the yellow canvas, how did you manage to get that done, because I once tried it before and ended up with something else.
Comic sans and Papyrus in 1 video! This guy really hates undertale, huh?
Ok no, good video!
Im a bigfan of bebas neue font. To me the character is so strong in this one
How do you organize fonts ergonomically? I have duplicates of duplicates. Different names exactly same appearance.
💙💙 nice video
much appreciated Mifta!
Love your tutorials ^_^
I do see you comment nearly every day, so I appreciate that and hope you keep learning here :)
Ah, I ready have all of these. Whew.
That's a good sign for sure Lauren
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. The first set of good fonts most are in my "to use" list. As always, have a great day.
Yeah it's all about learning and having more tools and resources for designing. Have a great Friday Sir
what do you mean courier is a bad font
This font is good for scripts
Courier /Courier New used to the standard for programming IDEs, where you want a monospaced typeface. I also used it for ages, until I replaced it with Consolas. It was only then that I realized how horrible Courier really is 😊
what do you think about the font family ostrich ( ostrich sans )
After finding THE perfect fon't for your project (such as Rockwell) how can you insure your css will point at the fon't if the end-user doesn't have it installed? Thanks
You can use Google fonts, or go the old skule route: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/CSS/Styling_text/Web_fonts#Web_fonts
Therefore PDF exist!
Thanks for this was waiting since yesterday
Yeah there were some suggestions on font choice, so I am happy the video was well received :)
Is there a font that like aileron/helvetica but the uppercase R’s tail is straight and not curved? I wanted a Saab serif font for my graphical based tutorial book that looks clean lined, thin, modern and a bit futuristic.
How do you get rid of the anomaly on a font when you add a thick stroke outline nondestructively?
Expand it.
C MACK
There are three options of where to place the line. Be sure to pick «outside».
I'm new to designing and I have a question. What font is best for inspirational quotes? Thanks in advance
Hello Mr Satori, I love this post! One of y main Design professors also loved Sabon (when I think I need beauty I always fall back on it). I can't wait for the chance to use DIN 1451 I never thought about it in the way you demonstrated. **Btw, a new Improved *Helvetica Now* has been released, but I'm kinda burnt out on Helvetica. I try to use fonts I've never used before so I am ecstatic about Aileron, will use. (I've used to Agency cuz I don't see anybody else use it. Thank You

I agree with most of those for sure, I wanted to make a 25 font list, but had little time. This video took lonher than expected as I made custom graphics for each font on the list!
@@SatoriGraphics Hey Satori, big fan of your work. Thanks for taking time to reply, it means a lot. So maybe if have more time, you can feature these fonts in your next Typography list. But pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaseeeeeeeeeeee, would you be able to credit or mention my name? pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaseeeeeeeeeeee....😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣
If I make another list, then maybe I will! But enjoy the weekend man!
Satori Graphics Ok coool thanks, Enjoy as well..
Great suggestions. I’m shocked you didn’t mention Gotham. It’s overused.
I have about half the knockout family. Anybody have the rest?
Sure, but still good. Especially if used in not-Americanadaustralinglandeustchland where it hasn't been used much. Heck, most people either use Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, or Comic Sans (except in countries where the Latin script isn't used. In which case custom fonts are usually used...
Hi, I like your video and I am wondering what the template you used for creating the video cover? Do you mind to share? Thanks
Hi Satori
Are you aware of the 'Finalise' process on Recording CDs? A final stage application to seal the newly recoded data..
If so is there such a process on Ai...
thank you very much it was very helpful
thanks for the nice video,
can you please make a video based on the best logo fonts?
I learned something new today.
Greetings from California!!!
thanks for sharing!!!
That is great, always nice to see people learning things from my channel
Your choice of good fonts are unique. Have you considered Avenir Next? FF tisa, Roboto, PT Sans, Skolar and Skolar sans? And there's a sans that is widely popular now I can't even remember it's name. Typewolf's #1 item on his chart.
Apercu (popular sans)
Thanks buddy
0:19 Fonts you must be using
4:34 Fonts you have to stay away from
what can it be. in commercial use?
