      Agree man. Wish they allowed knees and elbows. If they’re going to do karate, do it completely!

    • @Bbknuckles
      @Bbknuckles 3 года назад +5

      @@joshuacolborn2085 yeah they need to open up the striking otherwise this is nothing but bullshit points fighting with some flash KO’s. Overall I really like what they’re doing and how they play with the set design per location. This production seems to have a lot of money backing it.

    • @joshuacolborn2085
      @joshuacolborn2085 3 года назад +1

      @Rocco Durazza I understand that, certainly! But in my opinion what we see there is not true Karate, but a diluted, stylized imitation of it. I train in USA Goju, and we train at distance (kicking), close (boxing, knees, elbows) and even some groundfighting. We are proud of our style because all of these things are very traditional, as seen when analyzing the history of the art and how it was used in warfare. Aesthetics are important in developing an identity of Karate for the mainstream but it’s important we don’t lose so many key elements of the art either, as has happened in points fighting. I think even just allowing knees to the body in a clinch, but keeping the clinch timed, would be a nice little addition. But I’d like to see both-I think the nature of knees and elbows in Karate is a bit different than in Muay Thai, especially as they limit clinching and groundfighting, and I think we would see that if they allowed it. I like Karate Combat and none of this is going to keep me from watching it, but I wish it were a little more true to the traditional. Maybe that’s just my own bias because of the dojo I train at, though.

    • @joshuacolborn2085
      @joshuacolborn2085 3 года назад +1

      @@Bbknuckles Agreed. It reminds me a lot of the point fighting from tournaments, and let’s face it, none of that is TRUE karate. Always wide stances, always weight on the back foot, always looking for that KO kick, that’s not how it should be. We should be seeing more hands, knees, elbows, sweeps, trips, reaps, more diverse stances than just the horse stance, less of their horrific head movement. I get that there is an aesthetic of Karate they are attempting to preserve but it is to the detriment of all the things Karate is really capable of.

    You hear from many of these guys that they're cross training in Muay Thai. I like the fact that MT seems to be having some influence on these fighters who are among the first to branch off the old secluded karate path, which seemed almost impossible due to a lack of opportunity and the close-mindedness of the karate world. Cross-training in MT It makes a whole lot of sense, since the techniques are similar, but the prevalence of the point fighting style changed karate so much and shifted the action to a very long distance and turned the stances almost fully sideways, which doesn't lend itself to full contact very well. It's kind of crazy that nowadays you actually need to cross-train in other arts to reverse-engineer your style and bring back the stuff that was lost, but that's where we're at. The sooner things start to change, the better. That's why a league like Karate Combat is so important.

    • @Eshayzbra96

      Just in the montage at the beginning you see a spinning elbow (which might of been a backfist as elbows dont seem to be legal in this because it's karate). But yeah as a Muay Thai practitioner myself, I see the influence.

      I think he'd destroy everybody. Total respect to every person who fights in karate combat but it's still early days and the combat (again with total respect) looks very amareurish. The cream of the karate combat fighters still needs to rise to the top, it'll get there eventually as the fighters get used to it. I feel that in a few years it will really just resemble american kickboxing with different gloves.

    this is definitely what Karate needs to stay on the same level as Muay Thai/ Kickboxing, or ONEFC/ UFC MMA championships. I feel that it became way too condensed with control measures and point scoring that most people just viewed it as too closed minded. This looks far more interesting and the influence these fighters clearly have from other arts like Muay Thai and Japanese kickboxing (which ironically was created by a Karate practitioners who studied Muay Thai and fought Nak Muay in bouts) clearly shows in style and techniques, although it remains Karate at heart.
