Shrike always makes me feel like I’m yearning for something that I don’t even know I’m yearning for
He always sings with more accent when he's at home. This song reduced my daughter to tears when she heard it live. He is amazing live to be fair.

Not insane, just amazing
A shrike is a tiny little bird of prey that hangs its catch on a thorn and dismembers it. His lyrics are dark and beautiful.
I think he chose to let his Irish accent shine through in this song to honour the influence of Irish folk music that he used to write this piece. You can hear his accent in the album version of this song as well while you can’t really hear it as much in his other songs. Truly brilliant.

The Late Late Show is like the biggest chat show thing here in Ireland. Hozier had a great performance of The Parting Glass on there too. You should check it out.

Hoziers performance here was on the Longest running live chat shows in the World - The Late Late Show on RTE - the Irish public TV station. Its a BIG deal for any Irish performer - a serious show which is a rite of passage in terms of public recognition. And his parents were in the studio audience - so he was performing from his heart to his people in studio and at home.
He’s like an actor. He can speak and sing any accent. Of course, he’s the most gorgeous looking person too.
Well, being that he's Irish, it's pretty easy for him...😁

Agree 100% on finger plucking ... the first thing I noticed when I saw Andrew live was the unique way he plucks his guitars. Most of the concert videos I’ve taken are just of his hands plucking the guitar. So hypnotic ... he really is an exceptional musician.

it's not very often that i say i'm "obsessed" with an artist or their body of work, but when it comes to hozier, i can't think of anything else that describes how much i love everything that he does vocally, musically, whatever. looking forward to your wasteland, baby! reaction. i've lost track how many times i listened to that album back-to-back, it's so fucking good.
I love seeing people discovering what Hozier really his. He is so underrated. He is literally a poet, his lyrics are probably the best ones I have ever listened to. His vocals are just superior, and he is even better live! I can't wait for a new album to be released!
I'm always amazed when people call an artist "underrated". Hozier was never a mainstream artist to begin with and his huge success was more accidental than intentional. He's not underrated, he's just an artist who follows his calling.

Thank you for the revue. This is my favorite performance of Shrike. Andrew is a unique songwriter, an amazing singer and a great musician. It's incredible in a live performance (sometimes, no, almost always, better live than on record).

So underrated. Take Me to Church was everywhere when it came out, but he's got so much depth of talent and deserves for ALL of his songs to get more love.
The Windmill Lane Studios version of this song is so beautiful too
you actually reacted to the normal and not deluxe version of his self titled album and missed out on many of the songs he added in it especially songs like Run which are genuinely some of his best. Run has such interesting vocals because within the same line he's constantly transitioning from low to high pitch to give a particular effect for the story of the song it's one of my favorites. also Arsonist's Lullaby is a religious experience. And his nina cried power ep has 4 songs, 2 of which are in the wasteland, baby album but the other two NFWMB (inspired by the poem 'the second coming' by WB Yeats) and Moment's Silence (a song about oral sex lmao) should not be missed! so make sure to react to the deluxe version songs of the self titled album and the EP songs!

Love Hozier sooo much, that voice, his poetry, the music. And he's a totally beautiful human too, he did a podcast series about people who have made a difference in the world. His videos are great too.
Yes! The guitar picking style is so special and the reason it changes the feel is because the plucking effects the frequencies of the guitar so you're getting those completely different almost "fuller textured" vibrations from the guitar. Really rich sounding--some people don't gravitate to it, but I really love it!
I remember listening to this song when it dropped and immediately calling my friend later and basically forcing her to listen to this. I listened almost no other song for about a month from then on

Loved your previous Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello content. It's wonderful to see your enthusiasm for Hozier. If I were characteristize his musical style, I would say he's a perfect mix of Blues meets Irish Celtic mysticism. Us fans are hoping for a duet with Florence Welch...Just imagine the power...They both have that dark-light Fey energy that would create some supernatural music.

not all his live performances have this strong accent the song shrike by itself is meant to be highly irish influenced and even in the album it stands out because that strong of his irish accent is only there in shrike

Or any of the live performances of deeper cuts not included in the album. Like Run, Arsonist’s Lullaby or his latest single Jackboot Jump.

I got to hear Shrike live at a concert of him at the end of 2018, I was in the first row because the concert wasn´t sold out at all.
It was a truly magical experience
