Backscratchers are invaluable when flameworking. I don't know how many times I had ti either yell for someone or make one out of glass

Fun fact: Some electric lighters make a high frequency "screech" that young people can hear but older people cannot. When I first used one of these to light a torch my students freaked out.

You are correct about that. Curiously, although I cannot hear it live, the video recorded the sound and I could hear it when it played back.

@@RAMickelsen Shopping malls have used high frequency noise to drive away skateboarding teens. Most people over 30 cannot hear the sound. It was funny my students jumped like I had tazed them when I started the lighter! I only bought the electric lighters because many of them struggle using the striker/flint Bunsen burner lighter that we use in the Chemistry lab.

We’ve used the USB plasma lighters for 2 years now at the Workhouse Arts Center. We’ve had older and younger folks use them and never had anyone mention any kind of extra noise. Now I’ll have to ask. LOL. When I was testing them out to see how long the charge lasts and if students liked them, I took a rod of boro right out of the flame and placed it on the lighter casing. Absolutely NO marring of the case, not even discoloration. MUCH safer than the wood matches we were using and more eco friendly as well. BTW: we found we’re only having to recharge them every couple months and that is with several classes and open studio using them per week.

Fiber blanket? I always thought it was toxic! Thanks for the info.

We appreciate all the great knowledge you provide to the flame working community Robert. I've been melting for over a decade and I'm still amazed at the tips and tricks that I pick up from other artist. In my first shop we used the fiber blanket to close the gap in the kiln door and I never thought to use foil instead. Cheaper, easier to shape, and less likely to burn my fingers, I'm on board for that. Putting that into action this week, thanks again. I switched over to an arc style lighter a few years ago, I found one that fits into the metal cases of Zippo lighters. Sticks to the magnets I use all over my bench and takes up less real estate.

Most noise cancelling headphones have a mode that will single out voices and even more have a "tranparency" mode that almost completely negates the closed back design making them nore similar to openback headphones.

i like the electric igniter however i still use a zippo with no fluid in it i think it was a trick that Milon Townsend talked about in one of his books

I used an old fashioned welder's striker for decades but got tired of trying to teach people how to hold it so it worked properly.

Great bunch of suggestions. I laughed out loud when you used the jacks to open the bottle. With so many bottles having twist-off tops these days, I haven't used that trick for many years. But that reminded me how much fun it used to be demonstrating my Dino bottle opener to others. 😊
Gotta disagree about the fiber blanket segment, though. It's not asbestos that makes some ceramic blanket potentially hazardous. It's the fact that the silica/alumina ceramic fibers it's made from won't break down if you breath them. The newer, bio-soluble ceramic fiber you mentioned is formulated so that your lung "juices" will break it down, which makes it relatively non-hazardous. "Relatively" because overheating of some of them (there are now a number of different types) will begin changing the fiber structure to something which is hazardous to breathe. But asbestos isn't involved either way.

I’ve been a burn center RN, and man I have to tell you the silvadene is bad advice. Ice ice ice. Silvadene has issues even when used by medical personnel.

Thank you for the feedback. There does appear to be some controversy about SSD creams. Some studies have shown that honey is as or more effective.

Non-essential, but useful, wouldn't you agree?
