As an Ohio native we know to skip Cedar Point for most of the month of May. Operations and staffing are issues early in the season every year at Cedar Point. Once schools begin letting out and staffing issues are resolved (usually around June), everything starts to get smoother.
May used to be great and fine until covid.

@@SomunroWe always go for a Monday or Tuesday in mid August. The park is slower and lots of school are closer to opening around then so less kids.
If only they offered decent pay to encourage staff to work there.

Cedar Point is what started my 'career' in the amusement industry in 2007 when I got to work Raptor for the first time.
Although I dragged my 68 year parents on Velocicoaster and Iron Gwazi recently, in their older age I think it was a bit of sensory overload and nothing "hits" like Milennium Force or Dragster and the memories we have as a family at the park. Whenever we'd plan a non CP park trip, my non-enthusiast dad would always be "but are they going to be running 3 trains like CP? Otherwise I don't want to go there - they just do everything better".
Night rides on Milennium Force or Dragster with the cheering are some of my favorite times with my family who are otherwise not enthusiasts. From the sounds of it, you've had similar experiences growing up in the UK parks! Makes me happy you're able to truly experience the essence of Cedar Point despite the inevitable rocky opening months each season. Enjoy the rest of your time!

You 2 are my favorite people on RUclips. I went to Cedar Point last weekend for opening day Sat and Sun. Your review video of the Cedar Point Express Hotel is what sold me on booking there. It was perfect for what I needed. Next time I go to Cedar Point I'll have to try Hotel Breakers after seeing your video on it. You guys provide great in-depth information for theme park lovers. Cedar Point is my home and best park but I could only shake my head and feel for you guys as you went through what I've gone through the last three times I've been there with their terrible operations. Best park, wost operations

Wow Cedar Point... maybe it's not worth travelling from the UK if you can end up having 2 or 3 coasters open. This is a once in a lifetime trip for most.

That’s what happen for me and my son, we drove to rid TTD when it first opened and it was down so we never got to ride it until 15 years later when my son took me there for Father’s Day and we got to ride it once but then it went down. We also only got one ride on Maverick and VALRAVN before they both went down and not to be ridden again. And then to top it all off, at 7pm there was a power outage for most of the part so we just left to go back to our room. Then I see you all and the same experiences on the rides down and I am glad to say my home park is Kings Island and we have been fortunate on the rides operating. Also, Happy Birthday Shawn!!

majority of water rides in america don’t open until memorial day weekend which is probably why it wasn’t posted. it’s kinda just known here in america so i get how it seems weird that it’s not on the website. loved the vlog!!

Been going to Cedar Point since 99 and I've definitely noticed a huge decline in overall operations of the park and rides since then. The 90's and early 2000's were such a great time to visit, since the park was so focused on adding record breaking rides every two years, while at the same time operating them as efficiently as possible to ensure that guests could get on as many rides as possible. These days the park is a more well rounded park with better overall offerings of rides, food, and merch, but there isn't the same focus on running those rides like there was in the past.

Just bought my tickets to the park, water park, and hotel breakers for my 25th birthday! And the super extra fast passes LOL. It’ll be me and my partners first time in the park, and we are incredibly excited

HI Shawn sorry you experienced this. As a former Rides Supervisor with Six Flags Parks this is standard issues when ALL parks experience start up problems at the beginning of the season... mostly due to staffing as school is not out and call in sick kids. The rides are thoroughly checked daily with 3 inspections first by early morning maintenance inspect the complete track and must sign off the ride to the Ride Supervisor for inspection and document. Finally the ride operators are given the ok by Supervisors to run there empty ride testing then the ride operator approves final approval to run ride. At any level there can be delays. Sometimes maintenance has delay opening a ride and we have to wait. Please remember they are machines and safety is not compromised. Once the summer starts and school is out. Things are mostly resolved. ALL parks do have a hotline or notices posted at the Guest services. Please call the park your going to prior to leaving in morning and check. We are required to notify the guest relations and those who know call the guest service desk in the morning before opening to find out which rides are down for the day. This may help you make a decision before paying for tickets. Cheers.

It’s a commonplace here in the US for staffing at amusement parks to be an absolute nightmare until schools are out in June. This is a peak example of that.

Sadly early on in the season it's pretty normal for alot of rides being down. Usually by the end of May they have things fully operational

Yeah I've made the same mistake before went on opening weekend one year and half the coasters were down all day.
I'm going to Europa Park for the first time this year. I'm thinking Cedar Point may be next on my bucket list.

The dinning plan is so the way to go!! It is the same at Kings Island. I always attached it to my son’s season pass. Crazy not to! Not sure if CP is the same but you are limited to where to eat. Never found that to be a problem though. Just some places aren’t included in the plan. Two people can easily eat off the plan with it being every 90 minutes. Split things or take turns. Our favorite to split was the pizza as you got 2 slices and 2 bread sticks. Perfect. Second was the chicken tenders as you got 3 very large tenders and fries. I was happy with one and a few fries. My appetite isn’t huge regardless and when riding coasters… less is better for me! LOL!!
The dining plan was fantastic this trip!

Magnum aged so much better than the Big One as it’s placed beside a fresh water lake, not the salty Irish Sea.
It’s literally day and night difference having riding both.
Will decide to go in June instead of May now. Seems risky with staff levels and start of season problems.

I never plan a trip to CP in May. They don't have all their summer staff in yet because colleges are still in session. It takes them a few weeks after opening to get all the maintenance issues worked out at the beginning of the season. The upside is the crowds are much lower, but operations tend to be much better once the summer kicks in... from my experience. Also, the Cedar Fair/Six Flags merger still isn't finalized, so that wouldn't have anything to do with it yet, and hopefully it doesn't affect things like that once it is final.
Definitely makes a difference to the operations and availability this early on. But luckily we had a great day in the end!

Also, I love Magnum and because of that I think I would love The Big One if I ever get over to the UK! Top Thrill 2 will get going again soon, remember those trains are brand new and have never been used on any other coaster, I cut them some slack but you got to ride it twice ... congratulations! 👍👍👍

M.F. is my favourite ride in the park after SV and perhaps TT2 (which I've not yet ridden; I've ridden TTD but I like Gatekeeper better that TTD). I found the airtime identical in every car of M.F. in every airtime moment except the drop which is best in the back car; row 17 or 18. I'll admit my front car ride was in row 2 (to avoid the lines) but besides the potential wind in the face of the front row: the back car of Millie is the best car on it and delivers one of the world's best drops with it's long trains and T-bar lap bars. That's why it's in my top 5 coaster I've ridden.

Yes, most parks in central and eastern USA are not fully functioning until Labor Day weekend being the last weekend in May. The kids being college or high school are not out until mid week the week before so staffing is an issue until then. Most of the water rides feed off the water park so until that opens they are not. Same if you go after Labor Day weekend being end of August though it is still very very warm. Most pools and water parks close after that weekend every summer. Again, a lot is due to staffing as the kids are back in school and not worth the cost of the water parks functioning for a couple to few more week to only be open weekends. People hate that Labor Day is the official last day of summer as it stays very warm all through September. I am actually surprised the pools at the breakers are already open! They must be heated being so far north at this time of the year!

honestly surprised a prototype of this magnitude isn’t having even more issues than it currently is. kinda crazy and speaks volumes as to how well under control zamperla has this attraction. i was truly expecting it to have a much rockier start
