    imho, the optically best lens for the XF system made. I purchased it after I bought the GF120 macro for the GF system and in the end I sold the MF lens as it was redundant, that is how good the image quality of the XF80 is. I've used it mainly for product and event photography. The compatibility with the Fuji teleconverters is a bonus and a few times I have used the extra reach with TC1.4x and TC2x to photograph urban foxes. It is an expensive and specialised purchase but I'm glad I own it.

      Great to hear your experience about both TC's as well, thanks!!

    Back in the X-T2 days, I could tell this lens was built with the future in mind, it seemed to easily out-resolve the sensor. On the X-T5 it's finally realizing its potential, and it's brilliant. I think it's worth owning, if only because it opens up so many otherworldly macro subjects to get out of a creative rut, if we slow down and look around us. And it's underrated as a landscape and portrait lens. Works great with the 1.4x TC without much hit to IQ

      I like that phrase, built with the future in mind... I should steal it :D
      Thanks for the comment about the TC too!

    Being new to fujifilm, if i put a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter on it, what would the focal length be? And can you use any macro lens as normal lenses for out & about?

  • @duringthemeanwhilst

    that's a lens I often lusted over but never bought. for macro I use a Nikon 105mm f2.8G which in my humblest of humble opinions is the greatest lens of all-time 🙂
    I used to adapt it to my Fuji's but the focal length was just too long. So I did what any self-respecting photographer does - spent way too much money and bought an old Nikon D700, and to shoot macro on my Fuji I got a Laowa 65mm f2.8 ultra-macro 🙂
    And I'm now considering the 30mm macro to give me a slightly different look.

    Great video as always 👌 after owning all the Fuji lenses this 80mm is probably my favourite lens! For event photography it’s awesome for portraits and especially taking photos of cake and wedding rings shots and using the 1.4 teleconverter the aperture is f4 which is still very usable and I use the Fuji mcex 11 close focus ring together with the 1.4 teleconverter and it’s an awesome combo as you can focus close up without the need to get close to your subject!! It’s a lot fun to use and the versatility is amazing combined with that 1.4 teleconverter and the mcex 11 which I use in my 50-140 lens aswel

    First lens I bought when I switched from Nikon. Only use it for macro and close up where it excels. The best macro you can get for Fuji. I bought the 30mm but not really great for macro, you need to be too close to your subject , capable of macro but not practical.

    The extreme weight, size and price of the XF80mm as an APS-C (!) lens are the biggest concerns in my eyes. In the same range you can buy fullframe lenses like the Nikkor Z 105mm 2,8, Sony 90mm 2,8, Canon RF 100mm 2,8 etc.

      Very good observation! I guess looking at the FF options brings a whole different world of decisions as to preferences over bodies/ brands.

    This is another of my favourites, I use it all the time, and now with the Laowa lenses I use both. But I have taken lovely landscape photos as well with the 80 mm. I bought in Switzerland a long long time ago, and my first one had a deffect , it made a lot of noises just out of the box. They gave me another copy and it has been with me since then. Excellent lens indeed!!!! PS why do you say not the ideal on xt5??????

      Oh just for the size and weight compared to the small body, but yes it doesn't matter at all with correct handling or tripod/ monopod use

      Tough choice. See my comment above. If the XF80 is imho the optically best lens Fuji produce the XF 18f1.4 which I also own is a very, very close second. You wouldn't be disappointed with either lens. Good luck with your decision and if you can - get both!

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hmmm tough one. I'd have said the 18mm before because it's more practical for my needs but this 80mm is amazing.. I mean.. as said below the obvious answer is both... but realistically hard to say. Two of the best lenses out there!

    • @NickBarang
      @NickBarang 9 месяцев назад

      @@DamianBrown Even more complicated by the fact that I have the 23mm F1.4 WR and the 18mm might be too close to it... but given that I also shoot the Ricoh GR iii and GR iiix tempting because that would emulate the same shooting experience (but better) on Fuji... cheers :-)

    Love Fuji, however the system STILL lacks in the marco department - 80mm - too big too expensive, some compliants about slow AF, 60mm - now a BARGAIN - slow AF and a silly 39mm filter size, a massive hood and not a real macro unless you add an extension tube, the 30mm - STUPID minimum focusing which prevents use of external lighting/ ensures shadows etc....go for the 60 - MINTER'S now around £220 - £250 - and its SHARP !!

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  9 месяцев назад

      I own and love the 60, since it came out, but as you said it's not true macro. It's otherwise a brilliant lens. The autofocus of the 80mm is definitely not too slow especially for macro.
