    Excellent review as always. Really high standard of evaluation. I've used this lens quite a bit and have found it an extremely attractive package as a versatile carry around lens. The bokeh is a little disappointing as the review illustrates but in my own shooting it is very hard to find examples of any disappointing softness between the centre and the edges. I am thinking of one close up of a dewy flower that is absolutely stunning, for instance. Viewers of images with this lens have remarked on the striking nature of shots with this lens, even on shots to infinity, so it is well balanced in my view particularly in view of its size and weight. Very quickly I formed an attachment to this lens I don't quite feel with my xf33 1.4, splendid though that is. As Dustin says, this is likely to be a very popular lens for Fuji junkies, a great alternative to the 35mm f2 on account of its versatility as a close up and macro lens.

      Hi Geoff, it is difficult to do a lot of comparisons and keep videos brief. I've done a number of other Fuji reviews, and I would say the image quality here is good but not great...particularly in the mid-frame. Most lenses have unique strengths and weaknesses, and frankly there aren't a lot of other Fuji lenses that compare to this one - it's their first wider angle macro lens.

    An excellent objective review. I can accept bad corner sharpness but the midframe sharpness kills the usability of this lens. The 40 megapixels on apsc is very demanding as is. I believe even the Sigma 18 to 50 is a superior walkaround 'macro ish' lens as it is about the same size but offers more than good .36 magnification on the wide end and .2 magnification on the long end if minimum focus distance is a concern.

      Hi Dennis, the truth of the matter is lenses that have seen some use (like certain loaners) are not as easy to clean as you might think...and macro photos with lots of light tend to highlight dust that isn't as easy to see under normal conditions.

  • @just_eirik
    @just_eirik Год назад +1

    I kinda hate how modern lenses are being designed with profile corrections in mind. I guess it brings the cost down but I wish the optics were designed to be amazing without correction.
    For example I have the 50mm f1, which lets in a okay amount of light (which is why I have it), but it’s not as amazing as it could/should be. If I prepare to take a photo but then twist the lens a little bit so that the contacts looses contact, the resulting image is way darker. Meaning the profile correction brightens the image and brings in more noise.
    This might be a lot to ask, but I wish reviewers like you also tested the T stops of lenses. Before profile corrections have been applied I mean.

    • @stevenjohnson4283
      @stevenjohnson4283 Год назад

      Commiserations on your 50mm f1 being a piece of s*** that loses contact to the terminal contacts on the body. Its s*** like that made me sell all my Fuji gear last year. I shoot Pentax and the only time I've experienced a lens lose contact was a really old sigma prime lens I was testing out to buy, I guess the machining at Sigma left a little too much play in the lens mount.
      I bought the 56mm f1.2 years ago, and was terribly disappointed with the lens pouch/bag that it came with. Most of my Pentax lenses come in glorious padded bags. I just picked up a limited lens today and it has a leather pouch with felt lining.
      The build quality on Fujifilm gear leaves a lot to be desired.

      @matt88169 Год назад

      Pixel peeping is the devil.
      Every company is using DSP in their lenses and all the major software vendors offer "lens correction" as a standard feature - but you don't have to use them when editing/creating JPEGs - to my knowledge it is just lens correction/vignetting correction anyhow. T-stop data I've seen from DxO suggests to me that many lenses, if they are not identical to their rated aperture, are off by less than a third of a stop or so - not really a big deal. Frankly many modern lenses are so damn good the differences are borderline academic - which is why pixel peeping is required to identify the "problems".
      The 50mm f/1 likely has great transmission, but a rather heavy vignette that "darkens" it. Honestly for portraits I often prefer a vignette (and lower contrast and sharpness). The beauty of the 50mm f/1 is that it sharpens way up by the time it hits f/2 or so, so you can have a softer/sharper look if you want it. My main issue with the lens is its AF performance, highlight bloom, and aberration issues. For $1,500, the lens should have been even better. But if you don't like yours, you can send it to me and I will take good care of it for you!
      I am FAR more bothered by the fact that Dustin apparently got a copy of the new lens with tons of dust in the barrel that was blatantly apparent in the photo tests. This should not be happening with new products that are as expensive as these!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Год назад +1

      While it is true that all lenses have some degree of profile corrections, there are lenses (like this one) that rely on them more heavily than what I would like.

    • @matt88169
      @matt88169 Год назад

      BTW if you are unhappy with the f/1.0, you should try the new 56mm f/1.2 WR. It loses a half-stop to the f/1.0 but is well corrected optically and excellently sharp wide open at f/1.2 (my feeling is that its native vignette and distortion characteristics are good but I haven't bothered to test them specifically). It focuses closer and I assume its AF is also a bit faster, but in my experience so far that has been a bit of a mixed bag. In what is probably an unhelpful description, it seems quite punchy, fast, and accurate in good light. But when the lights go down, or when subjects are closer to the MFD, it can hunt or slow down quite a bit, to where I find nailing shots a lot more work.

My XF56mm, for instance, is sharp at the full aperature range, but this 30mm is almost useless at f16 and f22 for macro work that needs to be pin sharp, and I don't find that using it as a general walk-around is even as good as the XF27mm. My biggest concern would be how close you would have to get. It should be sharp enough (though at F22 diffraction will soften the image, as it would with any lens). 30mm doesn't give you much "working distance", so I wonder if you wouldn't be better served with a longer focal length that would allow you to not have to place the camera nearly in your patient's mouth.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI that's my experience with it. But I think this lens has to be viewed for what it is: a general purpose f2.8 walkaround lens that focuses as quickly as the best Fuji has to offer and is weather sealed... it just happens to be capable of macro at 1:1.
      Sold and/or marketed primarily as a macro does a disservice to the lens, and may lead to disappointed buyers. 30mm simply is not the ideal macro focal length.
      I've owned the 80 (razor sharp, but slow focus, and bulky), TTartisan 65mm 2.8 1:2 macro (MF only, tricky to use but very sharp), and the 60mm f2.4 is anyway only 2:1 and has a slow noisy AF. Still have my extension tubes which work very well on e.g. the 90 and 50-140 (but forget using the lens for anything else while mounted).
      What the 30mm brings is the ability to mount and forget about it. It's fast accurate AF and the focal length makes it very versatile. And you'll never get too close to a subject. It's not as sharp as the 80mm, but I'm using it so much more. I think this pairs well with the 70-300 as a lightweight two-lens set-up that simply brings the user maximum enjoyment and convenience even if optically there are better (bigger, more expensive, less versatile) performers out there.
      What gives me pause for thought is my 23 1.4 LM WR. Sure it's "only" 1:5 magnification, but is as sharp as the 80mm, and uniformly across the frame. A close crop even on the x-t3 and you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a macro lens. You won't get into the eyes of a fly... but neither will the 30mm.
