The Swiss Camo Wet Weather Poncho is a heavy, 'bulletproof' and awesome.

    Swiss Camo Wet Weather Poncho
    -
This poncho has slide slits for your arms but this can be closed with the snaps that line the sides.
Made from waterproof rubberized nylon and is extremely strong.
Large hood with a draw string.
Also all of the seams are sealed.
It's not light weight though and this probably won't be going with you on any major hikes. It's heavy and it comes in at 2lbs.
As you can see it is very large and this will cover you and your pack if you are wearing one.
The Swiss camo pattern is a bit weird if you ask me. I don't mind it but it is what it is and for this price I'm not complaining. In the woods it will be just fine. On the streets of NY it might be a problem. Haha
Purchased on Amazon for an amazingly low price of $10!!!
The listing says that they are used but the quality of mine is excellent.
The link is in the description.
I have used this poncho for many years now and I like it a great deal. I've been in heavy rain and even snow with this bad boy and I'm glad that I have it. Normally I keep this in my truck tool box for those just in case situations. I also have another in the house.
Negs : Heavy. No sleeves. Interesting camo pattern.
Pros : Awesome price. Bullet proof. 100% waterproof.
Think of this; goretex is a breathable membrane and it does a great job of shedding water but it's not 100% waterproof. This is.
For survival and bug out bags, this could easily be multipurpose. Collecting water, collecting wood, shelter, even floatation.
This is not breathable but there are many areas for body moisture to escape. In other words it retains heat and allows it to escape.

I purchased two from Amazon about 6 years ago for my son and myself to use during the hurricane season. I gave one to my 90-year-old dad because it fits perfectly over him while sitting in a wheelchair.

Back in 1986 I was issued one of these in Swiss Army basic training (Rdf Rs226), except we received the version with sleeves, reserved for cyclists units we were told... the camo patterns works well in Swiss forrests and mountains.

Love mine. Vents better than G-tex, goes over your pack, makes it through brush unscathed and works as an emergency bivy if you need one. A jacket won't do that.

I used to have a standard issue British Armed Forces poncho, in plain olive drab. Only really needed it once, but that time, I really needed it. The rain was so hard I couldn't see where I was walking, so I just buttoned it down, and sat out the storm. It was quite a Zen moment, being warm and dry, listening to the rain.
Onto the 'odd' camo pattern on your Swiss poncho, can't help but notice the red leaves on your lawn, seems to fit right in with your local flora.

I also have one. This colourful Swiss camo pattern is called "Alpenflage" . There are nicknames like "four-fruit camo" and "menstruation camo".
The hood is a pain. It is too large and doesn't fit anyone's head so well.
A good review. It was a pleasure to watch.

the Hood is so large, because it's meant to go over the Helmet and whatever extra Gear you may have on it.

I watched a video testing this camo, I thought it would be a joke. But I'll tell you, in a mountain forest environ. this pattern worked pretty darn good! It is after all "alpine" camouflage.

I agree !! Great poncho. I got 5 NEW from Cheaper Than Dirt 5-6 years ago for $15. ($3.00 each ). It does keep you and a pack bone dry without any sweat between pack and back. Yes, you can control airflow with the side arm openings. Camo pattern is called Alpenflage and is paterned after moss and lichens on rock surfaces like the Alps.
Any sacrifice for weight is more than compensated for with performance. ********

I noticed that on the inside of mine there are around 4 or 6 snaps, and I can not figure out what their purpose is. Do you have any idea what they are used for? I don’t have the poncho in front of me right now, so I can’t remember the exact locations of the snaps but if you need me to look, I can. The only possible use I can think of is that Maybe the army issues a peace of gear that the poncho can snap onto. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Got one as well. This thing gets you through a bonified thunderstorm and covers the backpack as well. That's what they are designed for. Loooong picket guard duty hours during pouring conditions ;)
I believe its original title isn't even "poncho", it's a "Nässeschutz Mantel" -- wetness protection coat. And it certainly is for a very cheap price.
One downside, though: it's unisize. You should be not too skinny or short.
And the Leibermuster camoflage is "Wehrmacht-Powaah"; so innovative that the Swiss Army adopted it !

Luke, I watched this video when you first put it up and it caused me to buy not one but two of these. Like you I love them.
My view on them is they are not so much a Poncho as a Rain Cape. (If you view it that way it becomes even more versatile and comfortable.)
Also on the hood, you can pin back the front of the hood so it doesn't stick out so far. (There is a snap for it.)

Cool poncho. I will have to look for one or maybe two. I could use one as a pack cover. Just bought a full set of Alpenflage BDUs that the Swiss Army apparently nicknamed their fruit pyjamas. lol Anyway, it is not surprising the camo works well for you in the mountains since that is what it is made for and why the Swiss used it. To understand why it is effective it is a matter of understanding things like how the eye perceives colour and colour intensity. From a distance the red colour shifts to a brown colour and it is meant primarily for concealment beyond 10 meters. That being said there are alot of colours in a forest, especially mixed forests beyond green, brown and black so it is not hard to hide. The BDUs are also pretty cool and had some innovative features like attempting to combine the pack and the field jacket into one item. The field jacket was designed to carry every item issued at the time. It did not work so well as a concept for a soldier but is a great idea for bushcraft, light hikes and survival. The jacket even comes with a built in sniper veil.
Getting back to ponchos I need to replace mine. I have an old Canadian forces one that is a thin nylon tent kind of material with a rubber coating which is flaking away unfortunately. It is light and packs small but not great quality. Sounds like beyond matching my new camo it is a good solid piece of gear. Not surprising since I have yet to see a poor piece of Swiss military kit.

Wish they were a lil more versatile as far as being able to make different shelter configurations like the USGI Poncho but that’s okay, still a solid piece of gear as a first line of defense against the elements when the weather wants to get funky.

So how much better is this than regular nylon coated ponchos for waterproofness? This is polyurethane coated so shoukd be totally waterproof in all conditions but regular ponchos are basically like tents. Some tents like hilleberg use materials that are waterproof in all conditions and some not so much. Your experience is much appreciated. Cheers

Check out the Swiss M70 field jacket, it is a true piece of Swiss army engineering. They are dirt cheap and a design like no other, incorporating a load bearing system with many huge pockets. The build quality is amazing, quite heavy cotton fabric, quality snaps and brass zipper, a hood that is very adjustable so it can be worn with or without a helmet and secured to not flap about when not used. It also has a camo face net. Combined with the pockets this jacket does an mamazing job breaking up the human form for better camoflauge and the red disappears in just a a bit of distance. As said above it is a design taken from the last german WW2 camo and lots of smart thinking went behind this design. Name anything the Germans made that sucked.

I have it, it looks just like a pancho in the video but it's made of some really thick stuff. The USGI i had got worn out (after I got out of the military I kept it and then travelled around the country for years and was homeless and really really beat it up, so Im not saying that the USGI is bad but this BudK poncho is thick.)

This would be awesome as a kind of scout poncho with one of those hooded poncho liners in the shape not a woobie. If you got caught in a horrendous storm with daylight leaving, you could deffo sit under a tree and just sleep through it covered head to toe haha that's how I would like to see it. I've got the maxpedition falcon-II currently. I had it rolled up and in the straps on the bottom of the pack, but I was concerned with it getting torn up when I put the pack on the ground. So I moved it up to the top straps...putting it underneath the straps that go over the top. But the straps are so short that they would come out of the plastic buckles. I had to put safety pins thru the ends of the straps to keep them from pulling out.
Prior to doing that I had run the straps through the cinch strap I use to keep the poncho rolled up...but that only allowed the poncho to sliiiide down and hang over the back of my pack off of the top strap...bleh.

    Hello,
I'm having difficulty determining the use of some of the snaps.
    1) At the bottom front are two female snaps on the inside, and at the bottom rear are two male snaps on the outside.
I cross wrapped each of the female snaps to the male snaps in the rear - to make a tighter fit around my legs - but it didn't seem correct.
As another alternative, I rolled out and back the front female snaps to the rear male snaps opening up leg room, but what is the point since there is plenty of room anyway.
    2) At the outside edge of each shoulder at the top of where the arm openings begin, is a single female snap.
    3) On the inside, at the bottom of each arm opening are two male snaps - about 3 inches apart.
I tried snapping the female snaps of #1 - both straight up or across - again, it just didn't seem correct.
I have looked at several RUclips reviews of this product and can not find any reference to the use of these snaps.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Tim

You know, if I watch a 7 year old video like this, I just have to ask myself: is he still using this piece of gear? Does it even exist anymore? ^^
Oh and btw: this camouflage pattern was in use in the Swiss Armed Forces for quite some time. It was an awesome pattern for the forest in the fall or in mountainous regions. With all those red and yellow leaves lying around, noone is going to notice you wearing that.
That pattern isn't used anymore, since the Swiss realized, that there are other seasons than just fall xD

I noticed on mine that there are 4 or 6 (I can’t remember exactly how many) snaps on the inside of the poncho. I can not figure out what they are for. Do you know what I’m referring to? And if so, do you have any idea of the purpose of those snaps. The only possibility that I can think of is that maybe the Swiss army issues a piece of gear that the poncho can snap onto to keep it from blowing around. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

+DarkInc Artist From memory it was going to replace the weremachts previous camo patterns. There's photo evidence of troops being issued Liebermuster patterned equipment in Czech.
Liebermuster is actually the parent pattern to American woodland which must be one of the most ubiquitous camo patterns. It's design was instrumental to woodlands development. And of course it's many many derivative patterns.
