This interview makes me appreciate Rick Beato so much more.
Rick is a great interviewer. Jimmy could use a few lessons. He asks dumb questions
Fallon is an absolute moron.
Ha, heck yeah! Good to see Rick's name popping up here. His lessons and wisdom about music need to keep expanding their reach. And yeah a total 180 in his interviewing capability and focus with guests. There's very few as good as him in an interview capacity, very good at listening and knowing when to chime back in or not to.
Seeing these kids all together makes it worth having to listen to Jimmy.
Almost
I was literally thinking the same thing.
He clearly doesn't have the grasp of them, as artists, that Letterman, Colbert or Conan would have, being more than a decade younger than those guys (2 and a half decades in Letterman's case).
Jimmy is a mean guy and unfortunately thinks he’s a gift
I like both.
Nice to see David being un front man like and letting the other band members enjoy the spotlight . Respect
Surely a first for him
lol. He's doing them a favor, and they're all just doing it because there are no royalties from streaming, otherwise you would not see David and Tina Weymouth together. What f**k does he care? He's been doing creative projects that gets him press ever since the Heads broke up. What has Tina, Chris and Jerry done? Tina pissed the pool in that band, not David Byrne, and it's because of her they never reunited. If she had been cool - which she never was, she was always impressed with herself from that initial early period, when SHE was the one that got all the attention, not Byrne - the band would have kept going, at least on and off, during the 90s and maybe would even be around today.
Drunk driving kills. Please...never ride drunk. Never take a ride from someone who has been drinking. Thanks! Stay safe.
@@TTM9691 I've had the feeling throughout the years that the other members of the band could have in their later years (after the breakup) been more understanding of David's, what appears to be, natural talent as a musician AND as an entertainer (the latter something they really don't have) and more open to the possibility of reuniting. Which could of course have been beneficial to all EVEN if the money wasn't "equal" but dudeeeee...that's some more vitriol you're throwing out...sure there's gonna be some envy, no doubt, but you damn sure aren't helping the situation. WTF
@@EastmanD First off, it's not "the other members of the band", it's Tina, that's it. It's not Jerry Harrison and it's not Chris Frantz (who got caught in the middle). Secondly, I'm not helping the situation? What alternative reality are you living in, dummy? Yeah, my little comment is really exacerbating the situation, it's all about me,......holy f**k are you sycophantic hor what? Go read about the band, bro! Go read about the crap she pulled for YEARS. She put a big giant wedge between the band and Byrne, she'd be mailing him these long, vitriolic, name-calling letters, and his quote was literally something like "Why would I play in a band with a person who writes me letter after letter calling me a scumbag and the worst person in the world?" She's such a wannabe. I love her! Great bass player! Total asshole. One of the villains of rock. Get the picture? (Now we see!) (hope that reference didn't go sailing over your head)
Nice to see they are on talking terms despite their differences.
David Byrne got that Walt outfit from Ozymandias🔥
Pop music with originality, people playing real instruments live without tracks, a non-conformist attitude, taking musical risks. Awesome. Bring it back.
2:03 "Take Me To The River" was written by the beautiful soul singer, Al Green.
co-written
So great they've come together again and laughing.
Just saw the 40th anniversary release of Stop Making Sense in Brooklyn tonight. They did a q&a afterwards. It was an incredible night!
The vibes were immaculate! And the q & a went well also.
Always a fan of Talking Heads and still am.
The reason the "Punk" scene was so interesting in the beginning is because the bands did NOT all sound the same. when they say they were not a punk band i mean they were a band BEFORE there was a "Punk Scene" which is far more punk in my opinion. once a scene starts wagon jumpers and gatekeepers come along and by default rules are set, what the sound is what the look is what the attitude is etc... which in this case sort of defeats the whole purpose of whatever that movement was.
pretty much all similar scenes go through the same thing, a SMALL amount of genuinely interesting and creative people come together and a scene begins. before long the scene starts getting some sort of exposure and more people start coming along, and then the people that are not actually very interesting or creative start coming along and taking the scene over. then the interesting creative people that started it begin to move on to the next thing because they are creative and get bored of doing the same old thing. now the people that jump on the band wagon starts calling the people that created the scene posers because they are into something else now. the hypocrisy and ignorance of it all.
i saw them in LA last week at the stop making sense screening
the crowd went nuts, everybody was dancing and singing
the group was cordial in the post film interview. they reminisced about meeting each other in college and how playing at cbgb was the best time they ever had. though when the interview ended, david quickly exited the stage while the other 3 remained to wave at the audience. what a fun night
Same tonight in Brooklyn!
I was there too! Most magical night of my life! 🤩
Bro was probably making a beeline for the bathroom😆
Drunk driving kills. Please...never ride drunk. Never take a ride from someone who has been drinking. Thanks! Stay safe.
Jimmy Fallon struggle so much to interview people stutters a lot had a hard time getting through this video. Love the Talking Heads.
“Fear of Music” was a stroke of genius. It was the first record of “different music” I ever loved. I got the album only because a friend of mine bought it and hated it so much he was going to throw it away. I offered to take it and give it a listen……..and I was blown away!
FOM was the "transition" album. Still some of the quirky pop/new wave of the first 2 albums but with the addition of the African polyrhythms and funk elements that would bloom in full on Remain In Light. "Life During Wartime" got some radio play but "I Zimbra" was the revelation for me.
I think it's their best record...prefer it to Remain in Light...which I obviously love too
@@stuartcarswell2815 I think I do, too. But my fave of theirs is still Talking Heads 77.
MORE OF THIS!!! Actual interviews and no lame skits.
Thank You Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon, and all you Talking Heads David, Tina, Chris, Jerry, Peace and Love Y'all
Saw ‘Stop Making Sense’ in a movie theater when it was first released - great fun! I regret never having seen the entire band live, but was fortunate to see David Byrne on his “pink tutu” tour. The Talking Heads are amongst the best bands out there and I’ve heard a few. Much love from a huge fan.
He IS the Messiah. I should know. I've followed a few...
Talk about a phenomenal band from the 80s. I got the ultimate pleasure in meeting them a few years ago. It was super awesome
Just watched Stop Making Sense again on Max, and it's even better than I remembered, and I was obsessed with it the first time around. It's pure art❤️👏❤️
David Byrne letting his crew do the talking and taking the limelight. That’s a leader ❤
David Byrne’s limelight couldn’t be stolen even if he said nowt… He’s a legend.
Only because he did the exact opposite for their entire career, and it wouldn't be a great look this many years on. Also probably wouldn't be conducive to everyone doing press together like this.
@@benjaminpetersen1952 Wrong. Tina Weymouth is the one who pissed the pool in this band. You're still clinging to that Rolling Stone article back in '87, huh? Tina was the first to get the spotlight, nobody was complaining she "stole" the spotlight from the others. She was a bitter brat for years, and is the most two-faced person on that stage, smiling and grinning. He's doing them a favor by sitting up there with them. What has Tina and Co. done since the Heads broke up? Nothing. Other than album called "The Heads", which tanked. No one's interested in her "work". (PS: Tom Tom Club was before the Heads broke up, just to nip that one in the bud) Byrne writes books, does stuff with Robert Wilson, on Broadway, he did that wild building/music installation which I can't even describe, he's always doing something creative......give me a break. He EARNED the spotlight.
@@benjaminpetersen1952 take that negativity somewhere else crybaby
A blast from the past Classic , loved listening to them in 80s
Please please please please PLEASE reunite and go on tour!!! PLEASE!!!
That will never happen. Jerry, Chris & Tina still want to strangle David Byrne, who continues to attempt to take credit for everything they did.
We used to play video of Talk Making Sense as music/fun when friends came over. It is the background noise to 80's memories.
I could be the most powerful man in the world, Ruler of everything. But whenever I hear "Take Me To the River" , I immediately picture myself in a dorm room in the 70's , passing a 2 ft bong🤭.🤭
One my favorite bands. Started listening to them in the 70’s. 🎉🎉

jimmy fallon is right out of his element in almost every single interview.
No he isn't. He's a music fan and behaves like an enthousiastic kid. No problem!
@@hughnique7717 I prefer interviewers who are more knowledgable than children.
That is so right, here he has a legendary band together and he's totally winging with total inanity and idiotic questions and commentary. Such a waste.
It should always be Conan 👍
@@sethklumb8686 I'd go Letterman first, Conan second and Colbert third. All 3 are plenty knowledgeable about music and the first 2 have introduced many excellent bands to America through their shows.
0:17 CBGBs poster Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie 3:19 engineer / studio owner Tony Bongiovi (Jon Bon Jovi cousin), Eno / Compass Point Bahamas 3:30 rehearsal studio recording with Record Plant remote truck
saw that movie so many times in the theater (including in the 600-seat theater where I worked which would sell out!!!!) saw the re-release last year- still as exciting and fresh as when it came out! definitely one of my all-time favorites
One of my favourite bands
He neglected to ask the number one question on everyone's minds which is if they'll ever do a show together
They're not allowed to ask that. They've been making the rounds and I feel like another talk show host (Kimmel?? I can't keep it straight) tried to ask and it got awkward lol
I don’t think there’s a single interview with any of the members from the past 30 years were they aren’t asked “Are you guys getting back together?” So I think maybe they finally stopped beating the dead horse.
The others might? But David has made it ridiculously clear he has zero desire to do that or go back and play all those songs again and again with them.
Have you ever noticed that David and Tina are always kept as far away as possible from each other and never talk to each other? There's your answer 😬
@@EmpyreanLightASMR Colbert asked them and it got a bit awkward indeed.
Thank you for the different GREAT MUSIC !
One of the best of all time.

The best song.
Talking heads are a legendary band so brilliant iconic timeless what a gift to see them all together in the same room! Amazing interview Jimmy.
💗Talking Heads!!!
Jimmy, please stop talking forever.
Life During Wartime is great song and that video is amazing!
I've changed my typing so many times now, I don't know what I write like!
Talking Heads changed my perception of music
Saw Stop Making Sense at the NY Film Festival. Have a vivid memory of walking into the basement bar of the fraternity I would join at UW Madison with Psycho Killer blasting on the massive speakers. I was hooked both times.
I still love their song (Nothing But) Flowers. Quirky and cool.
A midwest friend of mine ran into David Byrne decades ago in a New York donut shop. He said ro her directly," I like the ones with the sprinkles."
Also, me and my buddies were high schoolers when the movie came out, had to be there. : )
Cool that David sitting on the end
As early as 1973, critics including Nick Kent and Dave Marsh were using the term "new wave" to classify New York-based groups such as the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls.
😂😂😂trying to sound clever but just repeating something you read somewhere🥾💥🤡
@@mrknobchopps Sorry no, it's in print.
@@mrknobchopps Isn't that the way you actually accrue knowledge of anything? Reading it in books and magazines (if you are my age and there was no internet when you were discovering music) or on the internet or hearing it on radio and TV? No reason to be a douche about it.
Not sure you're right. The term New Wave was mostly used toward the end of the 70s for acts like Elvis Costello, who seemed different and angry, but not really punk.
@@mattsilver2237 The term "new wave" first appeared in music reviews of The Velvet Underground and New York Dolls in the early 1970s. CBGB owner Hilly Kristal, referring to the first show by Television at his club in March 1974, said; "I think of that as the beginning of new wave"

Saw the Eugene Oregon show just before the filming November 1983. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I too consumed a medical gummy and on the moon looking for my phone right now watching Jimmy through the Ipad😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
{singing}..."on the moooon just....watching Jimmy and I was.." dada....da....da....dada...
Naive melody is my favorite song by them.
His opening question is one of the dumbest questions I've ever heard asked on a talk show. It's a close second to Larry King asking Olivia Harrison about what it felt like to have the song "Something" written about her.
He really is the worst.
We were fortunate enough to see the original tour here in Eugene, Oregon, at a wonderful venue built for sound in the 80's. It was a total LOVE-DRUG Dance-Fest!!! One of the top three shows in my life. I don't think anyone sat at all that night. 😁😎🤩
Saw them at some downtown venue in Eugene in '78. Seems like it was some kind of bar/restaurant. Not much capacity and not that many people were there. So few, in fact, that it was sort of uncomfortable. They were just starting to get noticed. Anyway, it's all a blur...that was 46 years ago.
@@user-td7dh4fm3g I can't remember the name of that place..The Place? Anyways, I saw Patti Smith there also. Even saw Dave Brubeck there. Very small and oblong. Sound like the same place? Didn't see Talking Heads there...I saw them at the Hult Center. Wasn't built yet in '78, I think.

I want to thank The Talking Heads for being part of my 1980's teen years while growing up! Thank you, David Byrne! You helped make the 1980's great!
David is so subdued...regardless nice to the folks like this and REM out there talking about the old times, even if they won't (know better) than to play...

Awesome album and performance... I thought learning the first few songs was ok, when War in Lifetime 9.42 hit me I learnt the entire song watching the movie. Learning Talking Heads musically is essential.. 🙏🤘🇦🇺

jimmy fallon knows what new wave is and that the talking heads were new wave.
Now he does!

Right. As if anyone will remember Stranger Things in 50 years (let alone 10)...
DO ONE LAST TOUR. I cannot emphasize this enough…..
As much as I want this I'm afraid the ticket prices would be astronomical.
@@darthopper7874 Who cares!!!!! They haven’t toured in 30 years!!!! I’d pull money out of my retirement funds to go see them one last time!!!!
ABBA returned after 40 years to do one final album and a hologram concert via motion-capture. They were previously offered tons of money to reunite. Guns n Roses did the impossible and reunited. Boyzone are reportedly reuniting for a string of concerts and a joint business venture, but possibly not back for good. Twisted Sister has been offered a big chunk of money, Dee Snider has said that the money amount is so big that he can no longer refuse. No reunion has been announced at the moment.
@@DanielThureskog Yeah, would be huge if they toured. I remember that Blondie/Devo tour years back...everyone went. The 80's Gen X kids are 50-60 now, and have cash money to spend on stuff like this. Notice even that "Brat Pack" movie was just made. And will probably do well. These folks (55+) have kids out of the house in college now. many are divorced and want to relive youth. Cash in the bank...the time is right.

I will love “Psyco Killer” forever, what an amazing song 🔥 Rock Band 3 had an amazing set list.
I owned a bar for 30 years. I started to hate walking in the door because there were always people waiting to ask me for money, for tabs and anything else . For the last 10 or so years, I began singing, no screaming 'Psycho Killer' on my drive to work. It was perfect. When I opened that door, I was ready.❤

Jonathan Demme initially planned to make not this film but instead a concert film of what he regarded as the greatest American rock n roll band working, The Feelies. (See the one music video he made of them playing live.) But he couldn't get financing for a Feelies movie, they were too obscure. The Talking Heads became his fall-back. A second choice that turned out not too shabby.
The Feelies can still be seen live now and then. I was able to seem them April of this year at the Black Cat in DC. Sold out show, 3+ hours, 38 songs, 5 encores... a great time.
I imagine to be a human being saying "..we had a song called "take me to the river"". .. that's quite an achievement!
wow! this after that r.e.m. one-off onstage reunion.
At least the outstanding backing vocalists Lynn and Ednah were mentioned, but not the legendary Bernie Worrell.
The great cover version by T H's, "Take Me To the River" is an Al Green song, no one disclosed that.
