My brother was in the state band. He said it was hugely physically challenging. It took him weeks to get the step correct. And he said if you screwed up. You took a swim in the river.
Because it’s Michigan state... first they were 2-6 going into that game and second of all the day they have the “best tailgating” so people stay out there longer before coming into the stadium.
I was a member backing the "stone age." mid to late 1970's. I notice every director has a different way of conducting the National Anthem. But over the decades they ALL seem to want to rush through it at the beginning until they get to the ending. Here it was a fine ritardando at the end the way it should be. But what is the rush to sing through it so fast? Too much caffeine? running out of time on the clock? Catering to the crowd's incessant need to get on with the game? Slow it down a little like we used to in the 1970's, relax, the game will get played. 75,000 people or so CAN sing it together better at a slightly slower tempo and ought to, or what's the point of playing it at all? I am not a patriotic snob, but we have forgotten how to have a little class here. Football programs could even have the words printed on the back each time. MSU band can lead the way for all for just 2 short minutes during pre-game show and bring everyone together like they do with the fight song.
Thomas Timlin yeah...normally Madden (or dr. Thornton now) would never conduct this fast. I heard from some band members that this was like INSANELY fast in comparison to the tempo it’s normally played at.
I used to be a school conductor. Other younger school conductors who had been around a while would always rush throughDrive Thru it. Yet their halftme shows were steller and musical. I don't get it. I called that the " Fast Food " mentality. MAKE the crowd and band slow down, YOU are in charge. They'll get used to it. I also love the way schools (typically athletic directors and principals) often allow a singer to trump the band playing the national anthem won short notice while the band sits there dumbfounded and cheated out of their time and conribution at a basketball game. How stupid. These students and director are giving up their time so they can sit and listen to someone else sing the banner after you rehearsed it to getit right? Dumb. Ma y time sI was tempted to have the band turn it's back during the dangers time in protest.
the star spangled banner is a march 🤔🤔🤔 marches traditionally are supposed to be fast (think sousa and stars and stripe forever), but its been watered down over the years to be taken at a gruelingly slow tempo

being in marching band, this gives me the chills and makes me so happy
Watching this in person was so great.
What sportsmanship! Love the tribute to Michigan, and having the U of M conductor leading the stirring rendition of The National Anthem.
Spinning the S is the coolest formation in collegiate marching bands. Prove me wrong.
Hint: you can't.
Great!
I love the good sportsmanship...playing the u of m fight song?! Class, Spartans. 💚
Amy Bean its a tradition of the conference, a gesture of respect
Why are there only 20,000 people there?
