You can use the machine on the potato after it has already been peeled and you can make potato string fries, or hash browns. My mother had one when i was a kid. She threw it out when she ran out of blades and couldnt get them any more.

As a lifelong consumer of funeral potatoes, this video made me so happy. Although the fresh potatoes aren't traditional, I've used them before. Actually I once made them with purple potatoes and pearl onions, which was delicious.
Some alternatives and alterations for anyone interested:
    - some recipes include cream of mushroom and/or celery soups
    - my mom, who never liked the canned soups, makes a white sauce instead and uses that. She also does this for green bean casserole.
    - alternative acceptable and delicious toppings include breadcrumbs, browned cheese, or, my favorite, crushed potato chips
Funeral potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to a ham dinner. This was my requested meal for my birthday dinner this year. So good.

Hi Emmy... first time I have seen one of your videos! The reason I found yours is thru my sister who lives in Wisconsin. (I'm in Oregon). I had just purchased the current version of the Dazey Stripper. I got it on Amazon for around $17. It's called the Starfrit Rotato Express. Anyway, I sent her a video of me using my Rotato Express, and she calls me on the phone and said she use to have something almost like the one I have called the Dazey Stripper, and she had purchased it a thrift store also, and paid about $5. That was back in the 70's. She loved it too, but eventually it broke after several years of use. A couple of the main differences on the Rotato Express ... the power button is on the top part of the base (which I really don't like it there), but what I do like is that it takes batteries, or it can be plugged in also. Yes, I will be sending this video to my sister. She loves to cook, and I know she will also be making the Funeral Potato recipe. Thanks again Emmy for this great video!!! I look forward to watching all the rest of your videos! :-)

She was lovely, and when I got to the casket I noticed that she had a fork in her hand. I asked why and they said when you go to a potluck) or dinner at your church, as the cleanup is going on, they always tell.you "Save your fork, the best is yet to come". (Dessert.) I am a vintage kitchen gadget junkie! After watching this demonstration and the Bloomin onion machine that you tested In another video, I ran right out to my local thrift stores looking for these myself. The very first store I was unable to find the vintage model of the peeler that you had but I did find a more updated model which is called Rotato. Of course I searched Amazon for both of these items as I do everything before I make a purchase. They didn’t have the vintage model of that vegetable stripper that you had but they had more current versions. The Rotato that I found at the thrift store sold for $20-$30 on Amazon. It worked perfectly! Yesterday I peeled 8 pounds of apples in no time. I also peeled the huge russet potatoes the day before that. One of the things that I hate in the kitchen is peeling produce. This gadget is awesome! I’ll be testing out the Bloomin onion machine this weekend. Can’t wait! Oh and by the way it was the fourth shop that I found the onion machine in and I was just about to give up. I kept looking for the box in your video but the one I found was wrapped in plastic with all parts and instructions included. I paid $4.99 for the peeler and $1.99 for the onion machine. Amazon had the onion machine but it was selling for $65.00. Score!

Emmy! From a true blue funeral potato eater and maker, I have to say you did a good job making potato casserole aka funeral potatoes. Two tips. 1st, I always add green onions! Add 2-3 stalks of chopped green onion. You'll thank me! Lol 2nd after a holiday that we had ham and there is leftover ham. I put some in the potato casserole and serve it as a main dish instead of a side dish.
I have never made it with fresh grated potatoes. I boil whole potatoes the night before. Then the next day peel the cold potatoes, then grate them. Then cook time in oven is cut in half.

My grandpa used to buy my grandma all sorts of kitchen gadgets and she had one of these things. I remember she set it up on the counter with some potatoes and let me just whittle down a few potatoes with it. We fried them up into shoestring potatoes! Light and airy little chip fries things. So fun! Great memories. 😊

I know I'm late to the party on this but making a "pasta" dish out of the string cut potato skins is an *awesome* idea! You could make yummy creamy cheesy buttery sauce to go on top. It would be a bit like baked potato skins, but as a pasta!
Also, I grew up eating "funeral potatoes" and they are *amazing!* My Mom always used fresh potatoes vs frozen as well. SO GOOD! 😋

This is a holiday dinner staple in the Mid-West. I am Indiana born and raised and I grew up eating this. We just called it Cheesy Potato Casserole. However, we did not put a crunchy topping on ours - just saved some of the cheese back for the topping. We used Ore-Ida Potatoes O'Brien with the red/green peppers and onions.
I also recently lived in West Texas this dish was very popular. They made a variation of this with hominey and green chilies. Yum!

Same here. Then one day while eating cubed boiled potatoes (skin on), I discovered how easily the skin slipped off. Fantastic find for an eight year old who really liked potato salad. Lol. After that, the potatoes were boiled whole, quenched in ice water and the skins just rubbed off. A few years later though, I asked why we ate the skins of baked potatoes, but not in potato salad, and to this day I make it skin-on.
